You can pay for coffee with Bitcoin only when that merchant currently accepts it. Ask before ordering or check a local directory such as BTC Map, then follow the checkout method the shop provides. For a Lightning QR invoice, scan it with a Lightning-capable wallet, verify the amount and destination, approve the payment, and wait for the merchant’s point-of-sale confirmation. An on-chain transfer follows a different process and may not be fast enough for a café queue.
Confirm that the merchant accepts Bitcoin today
Bitcoin acceptance is a property of the individual business, not of a city, chain, or payment network. A café may have accepted Bitcoin previously, may accept only Lightning, or may have stopped accepting it while its directory listing remains online. Ask the cashier which Bitcoin method is available before you place the order. A simple question such as “Do you accept Bitcoin, and is it Lightning or on-chain?” prevents a payment that the staff cannot reconcile.
Bitcoin.org points readers to BTC Map for finding businesses that may accept Bitcoin. Treat any directory entry as a lead rather than a guarantee: check the listing’s recent activity and still confirm at the counter. The merchant’s current terminal, wallet, exchange-rate policy, minimum amount, and refund policy control what will work.
What to establish before ordering
- Whether Bitcoin is accepted at this location, rather than only at another branch.
- Whether the shop wants a Lightning payment, an on-chain transaction, or another Bitcoin checkout flow.
- Whether the displayed price is fixed in the local currency and converted at checkout, or quoted directly in bitcoin.
- Whether the merchant requires a payment to show as settled before handing over the order.
- What the shop will do if a payment expires, is sent to the wrong request, or arrives after the order is cancelled.
Do not send funds to a personal address supplied verbally when the business normally uses a terminal. Ask the employee to display the official payment request on the shop’s point-of-sale screen or printed sign.

Prepare a wallet that matches the checkout
The wallet must support the payment rail offered by the merchant. A Lightning invoice cannot be paid by a wallet that sends only on-chain Bitcoin, and an on-chain address cannot be settled through a Lightning-only workflow. Install, update, and fund the wallet before you are standing at the register; mobile reception and app updates are poor substitutes for preparation.
For a Lightning invoice
- Use a wallet that explicitly supports sending Lightning payments.
- Keep enough spendable Lightning balance for the purchase and a small margin for any wallet fee.
- Confirm that the wallet is online and able to find a route to the recipient.
- Know how the wallet displays the invoice amount, recipient description, expiry, and final status.
Lightning invoices carry payment information such as the amount, destination, and validity period. The sender and recipient need to be online, and a usable route through the Lightning network must exist. A wallet can therefore fail even when you have sufficient bitcoin if it cannot construct a route at that moment.
For an on-chain transfer
- Use a wallet that can create a standard Bitcoin transaction.
- Have the merchant’s exact address or payment request, preferably shown as a QR code.
- Allow time for the transaction to propagate and, if required, receive a blockchain confirmation.
- Review the network fee offered by the wallet before broadcasting.
An on-chain payment is not automatically unsuitable, but it is a poor fit for a busy coffee queue when the merchant expects immediate settlement. Ask whether the shop will release the order on an unconfirmed transaction and what happens if confirmation is delayed.

- Ask for the invoice. Tell the cashier you are paying with Bitcoin and request the Lightning option. Wait for the terminal to display the invoice QR code or a compatible payment link.
- Open the sending wallet. Choose the wallet’s scan, send, or pay function. A Lightning-capable wallet should recognize the invoice rather than treating it as a plain Bitcoin address.
- Scan the merchant’s QR code. Keep the camera aligned until the wallet parses the request. Do not type an address manually when the terminal provides a QR code; manual transcription creates avoidable errors.
- Inspect the payment request. Check the bitcoin amount, the local-currency equivalent shown by the wallet or terminal, the merchant description, the destination, and the invoice expiry. If the amount or business name is missing or unexpected, stop and ask the cashier to generate a new invoice.
- Approve the payment. Confirm only after the details match your order. Your wallet may show a Lightning routing fee; review it before authorizing.
- Wait for both confirmations. Look for the wallet’s successful-payment status and the merchant’s terminal confirmation or receipt. Showing the cashier a sent screen is useful, but it is not the same as the shop’s point-of-sale system registering settlement.
- Keep the receipt or transaction record. Save the wallet’s payment identifier and the merchant receipt until you have the order and any change or refund issue is resolved.
What normally happens after approval
Bitcoin.org describes Lightning settlement as near-instant for small payments with minimal fees. Actual completion still depends on the invoice being valid, both sides being online, and a route being available. A spinner or pending screen is not proof that the merchant received funds; ask staff to check their terminal before leaving.
Square’s United States checkout example
Square documents one specific implementation in the United States. In that flow, the seller selects Bitcoin as the checkout method and the terminal displays a Lightning invoice QR code. The customer scans it with a Lightning-enabled wallet. Square says the payment settles in seconds and the funds appear in the seller’s dashboard. Square currently lists a $600 transaction limit for this flow.
These are Square’s U.S. product details, not universal Bitcoin rules and not a promise that every shop using Square has the feature enabled. Availability can vary by seller account, location, software version, and regulatory or product changes. Ask the merchant which method is active at that register.
Square support states that a transaction taking longer than five minutes is declined and that the merchant must create a new cart. If the cashier says the invoice expired or the cart was cancelled, do not pay an old QR code again. Ask for a newly generated invoice and verify whether the first attempt actually settled before trying again.

Square’s support page lists a 0% seller processing fee through December 31, 2026 and 1% afterward. This is a Square seller processing-fee schedule, not a universal customer charge and not the Bitcoin network fee. The merchant may choose how to reflect processing costs in prices.
Lightning versus on-chain Bitcoin at a merchant

Do not infer the fee from the purchase price. On-chain fees are tied to the transaction’s data size; sending a small amount can still require a relatively large fee if the transaction has many inputs. Your wallet normally lets you choose a fee level, but the trade-off is between cost and the likelihood of prompt confirmation.
If the merchant accepts only an on-chain payment
First ask whether the business will hand over the coffee after seeing an unconfirmed transaction. If it requires a confirmation, a counter payment may take longer than the order itself. If the shop agrees to proceed, use the following process.
- Have the cashier display the exact address or payment request for this order.
- Scan it with your on-chain wallet and compare the decoded address with what the merchant shows. Use the wallet’s built-in verification screen where available.
- Enter the requested amount in the currency unit the merchant specifies. Check whether the wallet is sending bitcoin or a fiat-converted amount.
- Review the network fee and the wallet’s estimated confirmation conditions. A fee selected for low cost may remain unconfirmed longer.
- Broadcast the transaction and show the transaction ID to the cashier if requested.
- Follow the shop’s policy for unconfirmed payments. Keep the wallet and receipt available until the staff confirms the order is complete.
Never assume that replacing an unconfirmed transaction or sending a second payment will fix a delay. Ask the merchant and wallet support what happened to the first transaction before authorizing another transfer.

Fees, exchange rates, and the amount you authorize
There are several separate amounts that people casually call “the Bitcoin fee.” Distinguishing them avoids surprises:
- Purchase amount: the coffee or merchandise price set by the merchant.
- Exchange-rate conversion: the bitcoin amount calculated from the local-currency price at the time the invoice is generated. The rate source and lock period are merchant or processor choices.
- Lightning routing fee: a wallet-level charge that may appear when the payment is routed through the Lightning network.
- On-chain network fee: a miner fee based on transaction data size and the fee rate selected by the sender’s wallet.
- Merchant processor fee: a commercial charge such as Square’s seller schedule. It is not automatically passed to the customer and is not the same as a blockchain fee.
Before approving, compare the invoice’s bitcoin amount with the price you agreed to. If the wallet shows a different amount because the invoice expired or the exchange rate changed, cancel and request a fresh invoice rather than guessing.

Bitcoin payments are irreversible in the ordinary card-chargeback sense. Once you approve a payment to the wrong request, the network does not provide a built-in undo button. A merchant may voluntarily refund you, but that requires the merchant to cooperate and decide how to send the refund.

Bitcoin transactions are recorded publicly and permanently. An address is not a guarantee of anonymity, and spending patterns can sometimes be linked to a person or business. Avoid posting payment screenshots that reveal addresses, invoice details, balances, or identifying metadata. Secure the wallet’s recovery phrase and signing keys; the user is responsible for protecting them. Never share a recovery phrase with a cashier, support agent, or person offering to “complete” the payment.
Troubleshooting a failed or pending café payment
The QR code will not scan
- Increase screen brightness and clean the camera lens.
- Ask the merchant to enlarge or regenerate the invoice.
- Confirm that the wallet is in its Lightning scan mode, not an on-chain-only send screen.
- If the code has expired, request a new invoice rather than editing the old one.
The wallet says there is no route
Check that the wallet is online and that your Lightning balance is spendable. Ask the merchant to generate a new invoice; a fresh request can sometimes succeed when a prior route attempt did not. If no route is available, use another payment method or ask whether the merchant supports on-chain Bitcoin.
The wallet shows success but the terminal does not
Do not immediately send a second payment. Show the wallet’s payment details to the cashier and let the merchant check its point-of-sale dashboard. For a Square U.S. checkout, a transaction that remains incomplete for more than five minutes is declined and the seller must create a new cart. Resolve whether the first attempt settled before retrying.

The invoice expired
Ask the merchant to create a new cart or invoice. Compare the new amount with the order and check that the previous attempt did not settle. An expired display is not evidence that funds were returned or that the merchant received nothing.
An on-chain payment is unconfirmed
Give the merchant the transaction ID and follow its stated policy. Confirmation time is affected by network conditions and the selected fee. Do not promise the cashier an exact settlement time, and do not broadcast a replacement transaction without understanding whether the wallet is using a replacement mechanism and whether the merchant accepts it.
A practical decision rule for choosing the payment path
- Merchant offers Lightning and you have a working Lightning wallet: use the invoice, verify it, and wait for terminal confirmation.
- Merchant offers only on-chain Bitcoin but accepts unconfirmed transactions: send only after checking the address, amount, and fee, then provide the transaction ID.
- Merchant requires confirmation for on-chain payment: ask how long the order can wait; for a coffee purchase, another payment method may be more practical.
- Merchant cannot identify its current Bitcoin method: do not send funds to an improvised address. Pay another way and ask the business to clarify its process for future visits.
What merchant-adoption figures can—and cannot—tell you
River’s 2026 Bitcoin Adoption Report search result presents a 74% increase in its tracked merchant-adoption measure for 2025. That is a report-defined growth figure, not a census of all cafés and shops, and it does not establish that any particular local merchant accepts Bitcoin. Use it as broad industry context only; the counter’s current answer remains the decisive test.
