For U.S. subscribers, the lowest Netflix price is $8.99 per month for Standard with ads. It includes 1080p video, two simultaneous supported devices, and downloads on two devices, but it shows commercials and a small number of titles may be unavailable because of licensing. If you want ad-free viewing for two people in the same home, Standard costs $19.99 per month. Premium costs $26.99 and is worthwhile mainly for 4K/HDR, four simultaneous streams, spatial audio, six download devices, or up to two paid extra members.
Netflix bills monthly; it does not offer annual, multi-month, or lifetime memberships. Taxes may apply, and package or add-on prices can differ from direct Netflix billing. The cheapest legal way to watch with someone outside your home is an eligible extra-member slot or a separate account—ordinary password sharing outside the household is not permitted.

Netflix prices in the United States
Netflix’s U.S. help-center pricing listing accessed October 15, 2026, shows three main plans. The prices below are recurring monthly charges before any applicable taxes.

Netflix says the ad-supported experience includes most movies and shows, but a small number are locked because of licensing restrictions. Some older or otherwise unsupported devices cannot use the ad-supported experience, and the plan is not offered in every country. A plan’s simultaneous-device number is the number of supported screens that can stream at the same time; it is not the number of people who may create profiles or use the account at different times.

- Give the gift of entertainment so your friends and family can stream unlimited films and Netflix original series. Whether your loved one already has a Netflix account or they will be creating a new account, they can use a Netflix gift card toward their membership.
- No credit card is required to redeem a gift code.

At these listed prices, twelve monthly payments would total $107.88 for Standard with ads, $239.88 for Standard, or $323.88 for Premium, before taxes and any changes in price. Netflix does not provide an annual-payment discount because it does not sell annual memberships.
Which Netflix plan is cheapest for your situation?
Choose Standard with ads for the lowest direct price
Standard with ads is the clear choice when the priority is paying as little as possible and everyone watching accepts commercials. It is $11 less per month than Standard and $18 less than Premium at the listed U.S. rates. The plan still provides 1080p resolution and two simultaneous streams, so it is not limited to a single low-resolution screen.
Before switching, check every device you intend to use. Netflix says some older or unsupported devices cannot run the ad-supported experience. Also check whether a frequently watched title is among the small number unavailable on that plan. If either limitation affects your household, the nominally cheapest plan may not be the cheapest usable plan because you could need to upgrade or maintain a second service.

Standard is the practical middle option for a couple, roommates, or family members who live at the same main residence and want ad-free 1080p viewing. It allows two simultaneous supported devices and downloads on two supported devices. Compared with Premium, it saves $7 per month while retaining ad-free playback.
Standard also includes one extra-member slot, subject to country and billing eligibility. That slot is for a person who does not live in the household; it is not an additional simultaneous stream for someone already living at the main residence.
Choose Premium only when its added capacity matters
Premium costs $7 more per month than Standard and $18 more than Standard with ads. Its meaningful upgrades are 4K/HDR, four simultaneous supported devices, downloads on six supported devices, spatial audio, and capacity for up to two extra members.

- No Returns and Refunds on Gift Cards
If your television, streaming device, and internet connection do not support 4K/HDR, or if no more than two household screens are ever active, Premium may provide little benefit. Its extra-member capacity can nevertheless make the higher base price economical for a household that legitimately pays for two people outside the home.
What each plan includes and what it does not
Ads and title availability
Only Standard with ads includes advertising. Netflix describes the catalog as mostly available, with a small number of movies and shows blocked by licensing restrictions. The unavailable titles are not a temporary outage; they are a consequence of the rights Netflix has for the ad-supported service.
Ad-supported playback is also a device-compatibility issue. A television, game console, phone, tablet, or other device that works with an ad-free plan may be too old or otherwise unsupported for the ad-supported experience. Verify compatibility before changing plans, particularly if one household member watches on an older television.
Resolution and audio
Standard with ads and Standard both top out at 1080p (Full HD). Premium adds 4K (Ultra HD), HDR, and spatial audio. These features require compatible content and equipment; paying for Premium cannot turn a non-4K television into a 4K display.
Streams and downloads
Standard with ads and Standard each allow viewing on two supported devices at once and downloads on two supported devices. Premium raises those limits to four simultaneous supported devices and six download devices. Download limits concern the number of supported devices storing offline content, not the number of downloads of a particular episode or the number of profiles.
How to compare the real cost of sharing
Netflix’s household rule matters more than the number of streams. Netflix defines a household as “a collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where you watch Netflix.” It establishes that household using the internet connection’s IP address, device IDs, and account activity, not GPS location.

Netflix states: “You cannot share your Netflix account outside of your household.” Someone who does not live at the main residence must use a separate account or an eligible extra-member invitation. A person who visits occasionally is not automatically a permanent household member simply because they know the password.
| Arrangement | People live together? | Possible Netflix setup | Illustrative U.S. monthly total | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Two viewers in one home, ads acceptable | Yes | One Standard with ads account | $8.99 | Two simultaneous devices; ads; some titles may be locked |
| Two viewers in one home, no ads | Yes | One Standard account | $19.99 | Two simultaneous devices; 1080p |
| One owner plus one outside-household viewer, ad-free | No | Standard plus one eligible extra member | $29.98 | Extra-member eligibility varies; owner pays |
| One owner plus two outside-household viewers, ad-free | No | Premium plus two eligible extra members | $46.97 | Two extra members maximum; owner pays |
| Two people in different homes, each willing to pay separately for ads | No | Two separate Standard with ads accounts | $17.98 combined | Each person has their own account; each sees ads |
The totals in the table are simple additions of the listed U.S. prices, before taxes. They apply only when the relevant plan and extra-member option are available for the account’s country and billing method. A bundle through a phone, internet, or television provider can change the total and the restrictions.
Extra members: the legal way to include someone outside your home
Standard permits one extra member, while Premium permits up to two. Netflix lists extra-member prices of $7.99 per month with ads or $9.99 per month without ads, but availability depends on country and billing arrangement. Extra members cannot be added to Standard with ads, and some third-party-billed packages do not support extra members at all.

What an extra member receives
An extra member has a separate account and password rather than using the owner’s login as ordinary sharing would. The owner of the main account pays the charge. The extra member must activate in the same country where the owner created the account, so an invitation is not a way to bypass country-specific pricing or catalog rules.
Questions to answer before paying for a slot
- Does the owner’s plan support an extra member? Standard with ads does not; Standard supports one and Premium supports up to two.
- Is the account billed directly by Netflix or through a provider that excludes the feature?
- Are both the owner and the invited person in a country where the option is offered?
- Does the invited person need ad-free viewing, or would the listed with-ads extra-member option meet their needs?
- Will the owner’s existing household still need two or four simultaneous streams after the extra member is added?
If Netflix does not show an extra-member option for the account, do not assume a hidden setting or repeated password sharing will make it work. The documented alternatives are a separate account or a different eligible billing arrangement.
How to lower the bill without breaking Netflix’s rules
1. Start with the lowest plan that meets your device needs
List the screens that will be used at the same time, whether anyone needs offline downloads, and whether 4K/HDR or spatial audio is genuinely used. If two streams and 1080p are enough, Premium’s capacity is unnecessary. If commercials and occasional catalog restrictions are acceptable, Standard with ads saves $11 per month compared with Standard.
Rank #4

2. Match the plan to the number of homes, not just the number of people
Two people in one residence can use one household account under the plan’s stream limit. Two people in different residences cannot turn a two-stream account into a shared family plan by using different profiles. For an outside-household viewer, compare the cost of an eligible extra member with a separate account.
3. Remove unused extra-member slots or downgrade when circumstances change
Premium’s two extra-member capacity is useful only while those members are needed. If an invited person stops watching or moves into the main household, review the account rather than continuing to pay for unused capacity. Likewise, downgrade from Premium when no one uses 4K/HDR, spatial audio, four streams, six download devices, or its extra-member capacity.
4. Check the complete price of a bundle
Netflix says package pricing and extra-member eligibility vary by provider. A bundle is not automatically cheaper: include the recurring price of the entire phone or broadband package, taxes and fees, the Netflix tier actually included, contract requirements, and any restrictions on upgrades or extra members. Compare that total with direct Netflix billing before switching.
5. Avoid “annual discount” claims
Netflix says it does not offer annual, multi-month, or lifetime memberships. An offer promising a discounted lifetime account is therefore not a Netflix membership type. Treat requests for payment outside the normal Netflix or authorized provider billing flow as a warning sign.
Choosing between a separate account and an extra member
| Factor | Extra member | Separate account |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays? | Main account owner | The person using the account |
| Residence | Designed for someone outside the household | Works independently of the owner’s household |
| Plan dependency | Requires Standard or Premium and regional/provider eligibility | Person chooses an available plan for their own country |
| Country requirement | Activation must occur in the same country where the owner created the account | Uses the subscriber’s own country and billing eligibility |
| Ads | Netflix lists with-ads and without-ads extra-member prices where offered | Subscriber chooses an available plan, including Standard with ads where offered |
| Account credentials | Separate account and password | Separate account and password |
An extra member is convenient when one person wants the owner to manage payment and the owner’s country and billing method qualify. A separate account offers more independence and avoids tying the viewer to the owner’s plan, but it means paying another full monthly subscription.

The ad-supported plan does not appear on a device
Check whether the device is older or unsupported for the ad-supported experience. If the device cannot run the plan, use a supported device or choose an ad-free plan. Availability also differs by country, so the same device may show different plan choices in another region.

A movie or show is missing after switching to ads
Netflix says a small number of titles are unavailable on Standard with ads because of licensing restrictions. Confirm that the title is not among those restrictions before assuming the catalog is broken. Returning to an ad-free plan may restore access only if that title is licensed there.
An extra-member invitation cannot be added
Check the host plan, country, and billing method. Standard with ads cannot add extra members, some provider-billed packages are ineligible, and the feature is not offered in every country. Premium supports up to two slots and Standard one, so a full allocation also prevents another invitation.
Netflix says a viewer is outside the household
The household is associated with the main residence’s internet connection, device IDs, and account activity. A person who permanently lives elsewhere should use a separate account or an eligible extra-member invitation. Do not treat a temporary workaround as permission for ongoing outside-household sharing.
The monthly charge is higher than the advertised plan price
Check for taxes, an extra-member charge, or provider billing. Netflix’s listed plan prices are before applicable taxes, and package or add-on prices can differ. Compare the invoice’s recurring items with the plan and member choices shown on the account.
A practical decision guide
- Confirm your country and billing route. The prices in this article are the current U.S. listing accessed October 15, 2026. Other countries, currencies, taxes, and provider packages can differ.
- Count simultaneous screens. Choose a two-stream plan unless three or four supported devices genuinely need to watch at once.
- Decide whether ads are acceptable. If yes, test device compatibility and title availability before selecting Standard with ads.
- Check picture and sound requirements. Select Premium only if you need 4K/HDR, spatial audio, or the larger download and stream limits.
- Identify where every viewer lives. Household members can use the main account within its plan limits; outside-household viewers need an eligible extra member or their own account.
- Price the complete arrangement. Add the base subscription, any extra-member fees, taxes, and provider charges. Recheck the total whenever someone stops watching or a plan changes.
For most two-person households, Standard with ads is the lowest-cost workable option if commercials and the ad-supported catalog are acceptable. Standard is the balanced ad-free choice for two people sharing one home. Premium is a specialist upgrade for 4K/HDR, four simultaneous streams, spatial audio, six download devices, or two extra-member slots—not a default requirement for a larger family.
