On a work PC, open Settings → Windows Update and use Pause updates only if your employer has left that control available. If the option is missing or greyed out, Windows is enforcing an administrator policy; do not try to bypass it. Ask IT to choose an approved installation or restart time.
Pausing updates, choosing active hours, scheduling an installation, and enforcing a deadline are different controls. A pause temporarily stops update offers, active hours reduce inconvenient restarts, and administrator policies can schedule or require installation regardless of an employee’s preference.
First check whether your employer controls Windows Update
Work devices are often managed through Group Policy or a mobile-device-management (MDM) service. Microsoft’s current documentation calls these settings Windows Update client policies; the older “Windows Update for Business” name has been replaced. The documented client-policy features apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11 Pro, Education, and Enterprise editions, with Group Policy and MDM tools such as Microsoft Intune used by administrators. See Microsoft’s Windows Update client policies documentation.
- Open Settings. In Windows 11, select Windows Update in the left pane. In Windows 10, select Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Look for Pause updates, an update-status message, and any text saying that some settings are managed by your organization.
- If Windows displays a management message, or the controls are unavailable, treat that as the intended policy rather than a fault to work around.
Interface wording can differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases. If you cannot find the same labels, use Windows Search for “Windows Update” and open the matching Settings page, as Microsoft describes in its Group Policy guidance.

What each update control actually does
The controls below solve different problems. Knowing which one you need prevents an attempted pause from being confused with a restart schedule or an administrator deadline.
| Control | Who controls it | Effect | Duration or limit | What can still happen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pause updates | Employee, only when the organization permits access | Temporarily prevents feature and quality updates from being offered | Users with access can pause for seven days, according to Microsoft’s Group Policy documentation | An administrator can remove the control; Windows then greys it out |
| Administrator pause or deferral | IT through Group Policy or MDM | Pauses or defers a managed feature or quality update | Microsoft documents up to 35 days from a specified start date | Pausing a feature update still allows quality updates to be offered |
| Scheduled installation | IT through a managed policy | Restricts a managed device to installing at a specified time | Applies until the configured deadline is reached | After the deadline, deadline and restart rules can take priority |
| Active hours | Employee or administrator, depending on policy | Defines when Windows should avoid automatic restarts because the device is in use | A daily protection window, not an indefinite delay | A deadline can require a restart during active hours |
| Deadline and grace period | IT policy | Sets when installation and restart must be completed | Policy-specific; behavior varies by Windows release and configuration | Windows can force action after the effective deadline |
Microsoft’s references for these controls are Configure Windows Update client policies via Group Policy, Windows Update client policies, and Enforce compliance deadlines with policies.
Pause updates from Settings when the button is available
Microsoft states: “Users with access to update pause settings can prevent both feature and quality updates for 7 days.” That is a policy duration, not a guarantee that every employee account will see the button.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Save open files and close applications that do not need to remain open.
- Open Settings → Windows Update (or Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update on Windows 10).
- Select Pause updates. Windows may offer a date selector or a pause-duration menu, depending on the release.
- Confirm the displayed end date. The Windows Update page should show that updates are paused and identify when normal updating resumes.
- To return to normal updating sooner, revisit the same page and choose Resume updates if that command is available.
A user pause affects both feature and quality updates during the permitted window. It does not create an exemption from security requirements forever, and it does not prevent an administrator from changing policy. If a required update has already reached a managed deadline, the pause command may not be offered or may have no lasting effect.

If Pause updates is missing or greyed out
That is normally an administrator decision. Microsoft’s Group Policy documentation explains that administrators can remove user access to pause settings; Windows then greys out the controls and reports that some settings are managed by the organization. Do not edit policy-controlled registry values, disable Windows Update services, or use scripts intended to defeat the restriction.
Tell IT what work is at risk, the hours when the computer must remain available, and whether a restart would interrupt a meeting, production task, or remote session. Ask for an approved schedule or exception rather than an override.
Use active hours to protect your normal workday
Active hours are the employee-facing way to reduce surprise restarts. They tell Windows when you normally use the PC so that automatic restarts are preferentially placed outside that period. They do not stop Windows from downloading or preparing an update, and they do not guarantee that a restart can never occur during those hours.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings → Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options, then find Active hours. The exact label and location can vary by Windows release.
- Choose the automatic option if it accurately reflects your work pattern, or select the option to adjust the hours manually.
- Set the start and end times that cover the period when the PC is normally in use, then close Settings.
Microsoft recommends default intelligent active hours when they protect the device’s actual usage pattern. Fixed active hours are appropriate when the defaults do not cover a predictable work period, such as a shared workstation used by a night shift. The device-type guidance is documented at Configure Windows Update policies for different device types.

Active hours are not a substitute for a deadline exception. If IT has configured an installation or restart deadline, Windows may restart after the effective deadline even inside the active-hours window.
Choose a restart time for an update that is already pending
When an update is ready and no restrictive deadline has removed the choice, Windows may show commands such as Schedule the restart or a restart-time notification. This is a one-time choice for that pending update, not a permanent update policy.
- Open Settings → Windows Update and read the status message.
- If Windows offers Schedule the restart, select it.
- Pick a time when the PC can be unattended and connected to power, then confirm.
- Leave the computer available during the selected window and save work before the restart.
The available time range and wording depend on the Windows release and on organizational policy. If no scheduling command appears, use active hours for future restart protection and contact IT about the pending update. An administrator-set deadline can remove the employee’s ability to postpone the restart.

Installation scheduling is primarily an administrative control. Microsoft documents configuration through Group Policy and MDM; an administrator can specify an installation time for a managed device. Until a deadline is reached, the scheduled time restricts the device to installing at that time. These settings are intended for an organization’s standard update process, not for an employee to change locally.

Group Policy and MDM choices
- Group Policy: An administrator configures Windows Update client policies for domain-joined or otherwise policy-managed devices.
- MDM: An administrator uses an MDM service, such as Microsoft Intune, to apply update and restart policies to enrolled devices.
- Per-device scheduling: The policy can specify when installation is allowed, which is useful for devices that must remain available during defined operating hours.
- Deadline controls: IT can define when the installation and restart must be complete, with a grace period where the configured policy supports one.
The exact policy names, available values, and user experience depend on the Windows edition, release, and management service. Administrators should use the current Microsoft documentation rather than copying settings from an older Windows build: Group Policy guidance and Windows Update client policies.
Why a schedule can stop being honored
A scheduled installation is not an unlimited postponement. When the configured deadline is reached, Windows can require installation and a restart even if the employee chose a preferred time. This is deliberate: the device’s compliance policy takes precedence over a convenience window.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand deadlines and version-specific behavior
Deadline behavior is not identical across all Windows versions. Microsoft’s deadline documentation specifically describes Windows 11 version 22H2 and later as having separate quality-update and feature-update deadline policies. Do not apply that restart experience to every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build without checking the release and configured policies.

In practical terms, a device can follow its configured automatic-update behavior while there is still time, but the deadline becomes authoritative once it is exceeded.

Microsoft’s deadline model can include an installation deadline, a restart deadline, and a grace period. The effective result depends on which policies IT enabled, whether the update is a feature or quality update, and the Windows release installed on the PC. Consult Enforce compliance deadlines with policies for the applicable version before promising a particular restart window.
What to do when an update will interrupt important work
- Capture the status: Note the message on the Windows Update page, the proposed restart time, and any displayed deadline.
- Protect your work: Save files, close applications that cannot recover cleanly, and keep a current copy of work in the approved company storage system.
- Check active hours: Confirm that your normal work period is covered, without assuming this overrides a deadline.
- Contact the help desk: Provide the device name or asset number, your location or time zone, the affected deadline, and the business activity that would be interrupted.
- Request a documented option: Ask IT to schedule installation outside the work period, adjust active hours through policy, or grant an approved exception if company rules allow it.
- Follow the approved instruction: If IT supplies a restart time or asks you to leave the device connected, follow that procedure rather than applying local workarounds.
Troubleshooting common situations
“Some settings are managed by your organization” appears
This message indicates that a policy is controlling at least part of Windows Update. It does not by itself identify which administrator or which policy is responsible. Use the organization’s help-desk channel and include a screenshot of the message if permitted by company policy.
The pause date is earlier than expected
Windows may be applying a policy-defined limit, or the device may already be near a required update deadline. Check the displayed resume date and ask IT whether a managed pause or deferral is active.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Pausing a feature update did not stop another update
Feature and quality updates are separate categories. Microsoft documents that an administrator pause of a feature update still allows quality updates to be offered. A quality update can therefore appear while a feature update is deferred.
The PC restarted during active hours
Check whether a deadline or grace period was configured. Active hours reduce routine restart interruptions, but Microsoft’s deadline behavior can require a restart after the effective deadline, including during active hours.
No restart-time option is shown
The update may be governed by a policy that removes user scheduling, or the device may already be subject to a deadline. Do not attempt to disable update components; ask IT for the permitted installation window.
A safe decision guide
| Your situation | Use or request | Do not do |
|---|---|---|
| You can see Pause updates and only need a short break | Use the Settings control and note its displayed resume date | Assume the pause is permanent |
| The pause control is unavailable | Contact IT and explain the business conflict | Change registry policy values or disable services |
| Restarts interrupt a predictable work shift | Set suitable active hours, or ask IT to set fixed active hours | Treat active hours as an indefinite deferral |
| An update is pending and a restart can occur overnight | Use Schedule the restart if Windows offers it | Assume the choice overrides a deadline |
| The device is managed across a department | Have IT configure Group Policy or MDM scheduling and deadlines | Apply a personal workaround to one PC |
Bottom line for employees
Use Windows Settings only for controls your organization has exposed. A temporary pause and an optional restart time can help with ordinary interruptions; active hours protect the normal workday. If Windows greys out the controls or shows an organizational-management message, the correct solution is an IT-approved schedule or exception. Managed deadlines can ultimately require installation and restart, so save work and coordinate before the deadline rather than trying to defeat Windows Update.
