To pause a Samsung Galaxy update, open Settings > Software update (or System updates on some devices) and switch off Auto download over Wi‑Fi if that control is available. If the update has already downloaded, postpone the installation by leaving it untouched or selecting Schedule install when your model offers that option. Do not tap Install now while you want to defer it.
This does not create a universal, permanent update block. Samsung says menus vary by model, Android/One UI version, carrier and region, and its Galaxy Tab S10 manual documents an exception for emergency security updates that may install automatically. Use the steps below to identify which stage your phone has reached and what control still applies.
What “pause an update” actually means
Galaxy updates have separate stages. Understanding the stage prevents you from changing a download setting when the package is already on the device.

Samsung’s US support instructions describe Auto download over Wi‑Fi as the setting that automatically downloads available software. Turning it off is therefore a pause on that automatic download behavior, not a promise that every future update will be blocked. See Samsung’s Galaxy update instructions for the current US wording.

It also helps to separate three actions that are often treated as one: checking whether an update exists, downloading its files, and installing those files. The Wi‑Fi switch addresses the second action. The Install now and Schedule install choices address the third. A setting that affects one stage cannot reliably reverse another stage.
Before you change anything
Read the exact text on the update screen first. If you see only an offer to check for updates, the package has not necessarily been downloaded. If you see an installation prompt, a progress indicator, or a schedule option, the phone may already have the files it needs. The distinction determines which step is useful.
Also note the wording used by your device. Samsung and carriers may label the destination Software update or System updates. A carrier-branded Galaxy can expose fewer choices than another version of the same model. Do not use the presence or absence of one control on another person’s phone as proof that your device is malfunctioning.
Step-by-step: stop an update from downloading automatically

Open Settings on your Galaxy phone or tablet.

Tap Software update. Depending on the device or carrier, the menu may instead be labeled System updates.

Look for Auto download over Wi‑Fi.

Turn that switch off. If the control is not present, your software version or carrier configuration does not expose it in that location; do not assume another toggle has the same effect.

Back out of Settings. The change affects the automatic Wi‑Fi download behavior documented by Samsung; it does not remove an update that is already stored on the device.
After switching it off, the phone can still show an update notice when Samsung or a carrier makes software available. The setting is not a deletion command and is not described by Samsung as a universal “never update” option. If your goal is simply to avoid an automatic download while you are using a particular Wi‑Fi connection, verify the switch remains off when you return to the page; the labels and layout can change with software revisions.

Step-by-step: postpone installation after the update appears
If you see an installation prompt

Read the prompt and identify whether it offers Install now, Schedule install, or another similarly named action.

To defer the update, do not tap Install now. Samsung’s instructions describe installation as beginning when the user chooses that action, although the exact prompt varies.

Dismiss the prompt using the available back, close or later option. If no dismiss option is visible, leave the screen without confirming installation and return to Settings later.

Reopen Settings > Software update when you are ready to continue and follow the installation prompt then.
Postponing installation is different from preventing a download. The package may already be present, so switching off Auto download over Wi‑Fi at this point will not undo the download or guarantee that the prompt disappears.
If “Schedule install” is available

Tap Schedule install instead of Install now.

Choose the later time offered by your device and confirm the schedule.

Return to Software update later if you need to change the scheduled time or install immediately.

Samsung documents scheduled installation in the Galaxy Tab S10 service manual. The manual also notes that the option may not appear once the latest software has downloaded, so its absence is not necessarily a fault. Samsung has not confirmed that this control appears on every Galaxy model. Read the model-specific manual when available: Galaxy Tab S10 service manual (PDF).
Scheduling is a postponement, not a cancellation. The phone retains the update request and is expected to act at the time you select. If the interface later shows a different time, a reschedule control, or only an installation command, follow the controls actually displayed instead of assuming the Tab S10 wording applies to your model.
What to do when the update is already downloaded
A downloaded update and an installed update are not the same thing. If your Galaxy shows an installation choice but has not started installing, you can usually defer the installation by refusing Install now or by using Schedule install if the option remains visible.
- Do not select a confirmation button that starts installation while you need the device to remain on its current software.
- Check Settings > Software update again later; the available controls can change after the package is downloaded.
- If Schedule install vanished, follow the remaining prompt rather than assuming the download can be rolled back through the automatic-download switch.
- When you decide to proceed, use the update screen’s install command and allow the device to complete its own process.
Samsung’s documented controls do not describe a general, model-independent way to erase a downloaded package from the update screen. Avoid presenting the Wi‑Fi switch as if it removes files that are already present. If the device offers no later or schedule action, the practical choice is to leave the installation unconfirmed and check the same screen again, recognizing that an emergency security exception can override the ordinary flow.
Samsung recommends keeping Galaxy devices current because updates provide security features and fixes. Deferral should therefore be temporary and tied to a specific need, such as avoiding an inconvenient restart, rather than treated as a permanent disablement. Why your menus may not match another Galaxy
Different menu names
Samsung’s US guidance uses Software update, while some devices or carrier builds display System updates. Both labels can lead to the update controls, but the path and wording are not guaranteed to be identical.
Different Android and One UI releases
Settings are revised across Android and One UI generations. Samsung Ireland’s page, updated 14 July 2026, references Android 16 and One UI 8.5 among the versions it covers; it does not establish that every Galaxy has those versions. Use the labels on the device in front of you.
Carrier and regional differences
Samsung states that available actions may depend on the carrier. A phone purchased in one country can therefore show different update timing or controls from the same model sold elsewhere. Do not infer that a missing switch means the phone is broken, and do not assume that a guide for another region applies exactly to yours.

Phone versus tablet
The cited scheduling documentation is for the Galaxy Tab S10. A Galaxy phone, an older tablet, and a carrier-specific edition may expose a different prompt or no scheduling control. Treat the Tab S10 manual as evidence that the feature exists on that product, not as a promise for the entire Galaxy range.
Emergency security updates: the important exception
Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S10 service manual contains a specific warning: If emergency software updates are released for your device’s security and to block new types of security threats, they will be installed automatically without your agreement.
This is a documented exception for that manual, not a guarantee that every Galaxy model behaves identically.
The practical consequence is that the download switch and the “do not install now” approach cannot promise indefinite control over every update. If Samsung classifies an update as an emergency security release, the device may proceed without the ordinary confirmation flow. Treat any pause as a delay of the normal process, not as a method for defeating a security update.
This exception also explains why a guide should not promise a fixed number of days, a permanent block, or a guaranteed way to avoid every restart. Samsung’s materials do not publish one universal postponement duration. The timing and available actions remain tied to the device, software build, carrier and region.

Schedule install is missing: Leave the update uninstalled if the screen permits, then check again later. The option may be unavailable after download or on a model that does not support it.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing download and installation
Turning off Auto download over Wi‑Fi prevents the documented automatic download route where the switch exists. It does not cancel a package that has already arrived. Once the package is present, focus on the installation prompt or schedule control.
Assuming the switch is universal
Some Galaxy builds do not show the same control. Samsung’s support pages explicitly qualify menu names and available actions by device, software and carrier. If you cannot find the switch, search both Software update and System updates in Settings and verify the model-specific instructions.
Expecting every device to support scheduling
Schedule install is documented for the Galaxy Tab S10, not confirmed for every Galaxy phone or tablet. Its availability can also change after the update has downloaded.

Samsung recommends installing current software for security features and fixes. The emergency-update warning means an update classified as necessary to address new threats may not remain postponable. Delay only when needed, then return to the update screen.
Assuming a failed update is paused
A failure message does not mean the automatic-download setting is off, nor does it establish that installation has been safely deferred. Record the wording and treat the failure as a separate troubleshooting issue.

A failed update is a different problem from a postponed update. Record the exact message shown on the device, then use Samsung’s dedicated troubleshooting guidance for failed software updates: Software update failed on Samsung device. That page is the appropriate next step because recovery actions depend on the failure condition and device configuration; do not treat a failure message as evidence that automatic downloading has been disabled.
When to resume the update
When the reason for postponing has passed, open Settings > Software update and follow the available install action. If you previously disabled Auto download over Wi‑Fi, you can leave it off and start the update manually, or turn it back on if you want Samsung’s documented automatic Wi‑Fi download behavior. The available labels and timing remain subject to your model, software version, carrier and region.

After resuming, use the controls shown on your own device rather than relying on an old screenshot or a different regional guide. If the screen now presents only an emergency or automatic path, the ordinary postponement choices may no longer apply.

Sources and version notes
The procedures and limitations above are based on Samsung’s US support instructions, Samsung Ireland’s support guidance updated 14 July 2026, and the Galaxy Tab S10 service manual. Samsung’s materials do not publish a universal postponement control for all Galaxy devices, so any instruction that says every Galaxy can permanently block updates would be broader than the documented evidence.

Can I completely disable Samsung Galaxy updates?

Is a failed update the same as a postponed update?
No. A failure is a separate software-update problem. Note the exact error and use Samsung’s software-update troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the download switch has paused future updates.
How do I install the update after postponing it?
Return to Settings > Software update (or System updates) and follow the installation command shown. You can leave automatic download disabled and start the available update manually, or re-enable the Wi‑Fi download setting.
