To patch managed Windows devices with SCCM—now called Microsoft Configuration Manager—configure a Software Update Point (SUP) backed by WSUS, synchronize update metadata, scan clients for compliance, deploy selected updates to a collection, distribute their content, and monitor client results. The safest workflow verifies each stage before expanding deployment.

How Configuration Manager software updates move from Microsoft to clients

The update process has several linked stages. A failure at any one of them can leave devices unpatched even when the deployment appears successful in the console.

  1. Synchronize metadata: The site synchronizes software update metadata from Microsoft Update or a configured upstream source through the SUP.
  2. Scan clients: Clients receive machine policy, use Windows Update Agent (WUA) to scan against their configured WSUS update source, and report changed compliance state. Let the initial scan and reporting finish before deciding which updates to deploy.
  3. Select and assign updates: Add chosen updates to a software update group and create a deployment assignment for a target collection.
  4. Distribute update content: Update files move from the download location to the site server content library and then to distribution point content libraries.
  5. Download and install: Targeted clients receive policy, download required content into the local cache, and install according to deployment availability, user experience, and deadline settings.
  6. Report state: Clients send update state messages through the management point so administrators can review compliance and deployment progress.

Microsoft documents that update content is downloaded to the client cache regardless of the configured maximum cache size. Plan for the content path and available storage rather than assuming the cache-size setting will prevent update downloads. See Microsoft’s software updates introduction.

Prepare the Software Update Point

A SUP is required before Configuration Manager can assess software update compliance or deploy updates. Install WSUS on the intended site system before adding the SUP role. When installing the first SUP in a site, install the WSUS Administration Console on the site server as well. Follow Microsoft’s Software Update Point installation guidance for role setup and release-specific configuration.

After setup, verify synchronization completes and clients receive the intended update source. Configuration Manager documentation describes synchronizing metadata from Microsoft Update or a configured upstream source; the source and topology depend on the environment.

Choose a deployment method that fits the update and rollout

Method Useful for Operational trade-off
Manual deployment A known set of updates or a controlled baseline Administrators select the updates and initiate deployment rather than relying on recurring rule criteria.
Automatic Deployment Rule (ADR) Recurring update selection and deployment; Microsoft identifies monthly updates and definition updates as common uses. Criteria and schedule automate selection, so collection, user experience, and deployment behavior need deliberate configuration.
Phased deployment Staged rollout in which results can be observed before moving to a broader stage Requires planned target groups and sequencing, but limits initial exposure while results are assessed.

Configuration Manager supports all three approaches. Choose based on how much automation is appropriate, how many target groups need sequencing, what change-control review is required, and how much time is available to assess compliance before deadlines. Microsoft describes the methods and workflows but does not prescribe one universal enterprise rollout policy. See software update deployment methods.

Build a deployment that clients can actually complete

1. Confirm scope and compliance

Use the intended device collection and review scan results before deployment. Microsoft states, “Before you can deploy software updates to clients, the clients must run a software updates compliance scan.” A completed scan helps distinguish updates a client needs from updates it already reports as compliant. See software updates compliance assessment.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

2. Select updates and set deployment behavior

For a manual deployment, select the known updates and organize them in a software update group. For an ADR, define selection criteria and a schedule that match the recurring update process. Set the target collection and user-experience behavior intentionally. Required deployments can install at the configured deadline; optional deployments without an installation deadline are user-initiated.

3. Make content available to distribution points

Download update files to the deployment package location, then distribute the package to the appropriate distribution points. Confirm that the content reached the points serving the target devices before expecting clients to install.

4. Check client routing and service windows

Confirm the client’s boundary group can locate a suitable distribution point and that deployment timing matches the intended maintenance or service windows. Review restart and user-experience settings against operational needs so installation timing and restart behavior are expected.

Keep WSUS and update infrastructure maintained

Microsoft recommends monthly WSUS maintenance. Its guidance includes database backup, custom indexes, database reindexing, declining superseded updates, and running the WSUS Server Cleanup Wizard. For Configuration Manager current branch 1906 and later, enabling WSUS maintenance options in SUP configuration can automate cleanup after synchronization. Database backup and reindexing still require separate scheduling. Avoid running SUP synchronization during maintenance because synchronization can interfere with work in progress. Consult Microsoft’s WSUS maintenance guide.

Also verify synchronization status, distribution point content availability, and boundary-group routing as routine operational checks. For applicable Windows 11 on-premises update scenarios, Unified Update Platform (UUP) can affect content storage; validate the operating-system version and architecture requirements in current Microsoft documentation before capacity planning.

Troubleshoot by finding the failing stage

First determine whether the problem is synchronization, client scanning, content location or download, installation, supersedence, or detection and reporting. Scope the issue by affected client or server versions, whether the failure is patterned, recent changes, affected population, and shared network or site characteristics. Microsoft’s software update troubleshooting guidance describes this lifecycle-oriented approach.

Synchronization or scan failures

  • Check whether update synchronization completed successfully.
  • Confirm clients receive the intended WSUS location.
  • For scan problems, inspect the software update scan and Windows Update Agent logs. The Scan Agent requests a scan through WUAHandler and the Windows Update Agent API after the client identifies its WSUS update source.

Content download failures

  • Inspect CAS.log, ContentTransferManager.log, and DataTransferService.log.
  • Verify the client’s boundary group maps to a distribution point that has the required content.
  • Assess the configured fallback behavior if a suitable distribution point is not available.

Installation, detection, or restart problems

  • Review WUAHandler.log and WindowsUpdate.log for install or detection issues, and distinguish update-specific installation behavior from scan or source problems.
  • If restarts or maintenance-window behavior are unexpected, check deployment user-experience settings and the client’s service windows.

Do not treat a successful scan as proof that content downloaded, or a successful download as proof that installation and detection completed. Identify the stage and investigate its corresponding logs and dependencies.
