Patch PAN-OS only after matching the device’s exact branch and hotfix suffix to the Palo Alto Networks advisory for the CVE. Then verify four independent signals: the running build is in the advisory’s unaffected range, the documented hot/warm/cold action completed, a system-log event records the installation, and any required post-reboot integrity validation finished. A generic “upgrade succeeded” message is not proof that the vulnerability is remediated.
The safest process is to identify the precise remediation, complete the licensing, disk, content, plugin, connectivity, and HA checks, install the patch from Device > Software > Check Now with Include Patch enabled, and retain evidence for every firewall, HA peer, and Panorama instance in scope.
What a safe PAN-OS patch actually proves
A PAN-OS software patch is a targeted update for the release already installed. Palo Alto Networks documents that a patch applies bug and CVE fixes without requiring a prolonged maintenance window, requires an active support license and outbound internet access, and can be reverted. It is not interchangeable with a full maintenance or feature upgrade.
The security result is version-specific. A patch is successful only when the resulting PAN-OS build appears in the CVE advisory’s unaffected range for the affected product and branch. The newest-looking release is not automatically a fix for every CVE, and a major or minor branch number without its hotfix suffix is not enough evidence.

Patch versus full upgrade

1. Identify the exact remediation before scheduling work
Start an evidence record before opening the software page. Capture the device type, installed PAN-OS version, complete hotfix suffix, HA role, and CVE identifier. Include PA-Series, VM-Series, Panorama, or any other platform represented in the change. The same CVE can have different fixed targets on different branches or products.
Use the advisory’s affected and unaffected table
Open the Palo Alto Networks security advisory for the exact CVE and compare its affected and unaffected columns with the version currently running. Treat the unaffected column as the authority. Do not infer a fix from a release date, a higher-looking branch, or a partial version string.
For example, the CVE-2026-0322 advisory lists fixed targets for applicable affected ranges as follows:

Those thresholds are an example from the 2026 advisory, not a universal target for every PAN-OS CVE. Confirm that your appliance is in the advisory’s affected range and that the proposed build, including the complete -hN suffix, is listed as unaffected.
Decide whether a patch is the right change
Choose a same-branch patch when it contains the required CVE fix and its restart behavior fits the maintenance plan. Choose a full upgrade only when the advisory, release notes, and your compatibility review support moving to another maintenance or feature release. If the advisory does not list your installed branch or a proposed target, stop and obtain vendor guidance rather than guessing.

2. Complete the pre-change checklist
Do not start the download until every item below has an owner and a recorded result. These checks prevent a security change from becoming an avoidable outage.
- Registration and support: Confirm the firewall or Panorama instance is registered and has the support license required to obtain and apply PAN-OS patches.
- Disk capacity: Run
show system disk-spaceand verify that the device has enough free space for the download, staging, installation, and any reboot-related files. - Content release: Check the minimum content release specified by the target patch or release notes. Do not assume the currently installed content level is acceptable.
- Preferred release: Confirm that the target build is the one approved for your environment, not merely the newest item displayed by the update service.
- Upgrade path: If the work is more than a same-branch patch, verify every required intermediate release. A direct jump that is valid for one branch may be invalid for another.
- Release notes and known issues: Read the target release notes, including known and addressed issues, and record any issue that affects your traffic, routing, authentication, logging, or management workflows.
- GlobalProtect compatibility: When GlobalProtect is deployed, check the minimum agent requirement for the target PAN-OS. The checklist warns that an incompatible agent can disconnect VPN users after the change.
- Plugin compatibility: Check installed plugins and their supported PAN-OS versions, especially on Panorama and management systems that coordinate firewalls.
- Update-server connectivity: Confirm that the device can resolve and reach the vendor update service. The documented troubleshooting test is under the device’s troubleshooting tools; if resolution fails, correct DNS or the configured update-server setting before retrying.
- Maintenance impact: Determine whether the patch is hot, warm, or cold. Reserve a reboot window for a cold patch and account for process restarts for a warm patch.
- HA plan: Record each peer’s role and synchronization state. Plan the peer-by-peer sequence, install the same patch on both members, and define the verification gate before moving to the next member.
Restrict management-plane exposure
Keep administrative access limited to trusted management networks while the patch is being prepared and installed. Palo Alto Networks reported exploit attempts that chained CVE-2025-0108, CVE-2024-9474, and CVE-2025-0111 against unpatched, unsecured management interfaces. Remove unnecessary internet exposure, restrict permitted administrator sources, and monitor the management plane during the change. These controls reduce the chance that an exposed interface is attacked while it remains unpatched or is rebooting.

Test update-server access before production work
Use the device troubleshooting area to run the update-server test. A failed name-resolution result is a blocker, not a cosmetic warning: the software page may show no patch or fail during download. Correct the device’s DNS configuration or update-server setting, rerun the test, and record the successful result. Outbound internet access and the support entitlement must both remain available for the software workflow.
3. Install the PAN-OS patch from the web interface
The following sequence applies to the documented PAN-OS software-patch workflow. Use the exact patch whose base release matches the version currently running.
- Sign in to the firewall’s web interface from the restricted management network.
- Open Device > Software.
- Select Check Now to refresh the available software list.
- Enable Include Patch. Without this option, the list can omit same-branch patches.
- Locate the patch for the current PAN-OS release. Match the base branch and the full hotfix suffix to your change record.
- Open More Info for the candidate patch.
- Confirm that the information identifies the CVE being remediated and states the restart requirement expected by your plan. If the CVE or restart behavior does not match, stop.
- Select Download and wait for the download and validation to complete.
- Select Install. Do not interrupt the process or close the management session merely because the interface appears busy.
- Select Apply when prompted. Palo Alto Networks states that the firewall reboots automatically when the patch requires a reboot.
- Wait for the management interface and normal services to return before beginning verification. A cold patch requires the full firewall reboot cycle; a warm patch restarts one or more processes; a hot patch refreshes the web interface.
Understand hot, warm, and cold behavior
For PAN-OS 12.1 and later documentation, the patch label identifies the expected behavior. A hot patch refreshes the web interface without a firewall reboot. A warm patch restarts one or more processes. A cold patch reboots the firewall. Use the label shown for the selected patch, not an assumption based on the CVE’s severity.

Apply the same patch across HA peers
Install the identical patch on the HA peer as required by the change plan. A patch on only one member does not establish that the HA pair is remediated. Confirm synchronization and health after each member’s action, and do not declare the pair complete until every member reports the unaffected build and the expected installation event.
4. Verify that the vulnerability is fixed
Verification is a chain of evidence, not one screen. Perform the checks below for every firewall, HA member, and Panorama instance included in the scope.
Check the running version, including the suffix
After the patch or reboot, capture the version shown by the firewall and compare it with the advisory’s unaffected range. Include the complete -hN suffix. For CVE-2026-0322, for example, a device on the applicable 12.1 affected range must be at 12.1.10-h2 or later as listed by the advisory; recording only “12.1” cannot prove that condition.
If the running build remains in the affected column, treat the change as unsuccessful even if the installer reported completion. Check whether the wrong branch was selected, the patch was applied to a different device, or the device returned to its previous build after a failed or reverted operation.
Confirm the expected action completed
Match the observed behavior with the patch label. A hot patch should refresh the web interface, a warm patch should complete its specified process restarts, and a cold patch should complete the firewall reboot cycle. Do not proceed to a production traffic test while a required restart is still pending.

Inspect the system log
Open Monitor > Logs > System and find the event for the patch installation. Palo Alto Networks states that a system log is generated when a PAN-OS software patch is installed or reverted. Record the event timestamp, device identity, and whether the event says installation or revert. The log is an independent confirmation that the software action occurred, but it does not replace the advisory version comparison.
Allow physical-firewall integrity validation to finish
For a physical firewall, Palo Alto Networks states that after a PAN-OS software update is successfully downloaded and installed, the software is validated after the physical firewall reboots as part of the installation process to ensure PAN-OS software integrity. Wait for that reboot and validation to complete before declaring the change successful. This statement is specific to the physical-firewall reboot process; do not describe it as an identical check for every virtual deployment.
Repeat the proof across the whole scope
Repeat the version, action, log, and applicable integrity checks for each HA member and every Panorama instance. A healthy active peer does not prove that its passive peer is fixed. Likewise, patching a firewall does not prove that a separately managed Panorama instance has the required build.
Record evidence that another operator can audit

Keep the advisory comparison and device evidence together. A scanner result can add confidence, but it cannot substitute for checking the running build against the vendor’s unaffected table. Conversely, a correct build with no installation log or incomplete reboot should remain in a verification state until the missing evidence is resolved.

The patch does not appear
First select Check Now and verify that Include Patch is enabled. Then confirm that the device is registered, licensed, connected to the update server, and running the branch for which the patch was published. Check disk space with show system disk-space and review content, plugin, and release-note prerequisites. If the advisory does not list the installed branch, do not force an unrelated package; obtain a branch-specific remediation.

The update-server test fails
Use the documented troubleshooting test under the device tools. A name-resolution failure normally points to DNS or the configured update-server setting. Correct that configuration, rerun the test, and only then refresh the software list. If outbound access is blocked or the support license is unavailable, the patch workflow cannot be treated as ready.
Installation requests a restart you did not plan
Stop and reconcile the restart requirement shown under More Info with the change window. A cold patch reboots the firewall; a warm patch restarts processes. Reschedule if the expected impact was not approved. Never classify a patch as hot based on a generic maintenance plan when the specific package says warm or cold.
GlobalProtect users lose connectivity
Check the target release’s minimum GlobalProtect-agent requirement before retrying. The pre-change checklist warns that an incompatible agent can cause VPN users to lose connectivity. If the requirement was missed, correct the compatibility plan and coordinate the agent and PAN-OS changes rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same firewall patch.

HA members show different results
Confirm that the same patch was installed on both peers and that each peer completed its own required restart or process action. Compare each member’s complete version suffix and system-log event. Do not use the healthy member’s status as evidence for the other member. If synchronization or management visibility is incomplete, keep the change open until both peers can be independently verified.
The system log says revert or the build is still affected
A revert event means the patch did not remain installed. Preserve the event, check disk space, licensing, update-server access, and release prerequisites, and review the package’s More Info details. If the post-change version remains in the advisory’s affected range, the vulnerability is not proven fixed; stop relying on the successful download or install message and obtain an approved remediation path.
6. Close the change only after a documented security decision
Use the following final gate for each in-scope device:
- The exact CVE advisory has been identified and its unaffected range is recorded.
- The running PAN-OS version, including every hotfix suffix, is in that unaffected range.
- The patch’s hot, warm, or cold action has completed as documented.
- The system log records installation rather than revert.
- Physical-firewall post-reboot integrity validation has completed when applicable.
- Every HA member and Panorama instance in scope has passed the same checks.
- Management-plane exposure has been returned to the approved operational policy only after the patch is verified.
- Before-and-after versions, patch identity, timestamps, and any scanner result are attached to the change record.
If any item is missing, label the change incomplete instead of “fixed.” The defensible conclusion is the one supported by the advisory comparison and device evidence: the running build is explicitly unaffected, the expected installation action completed, and the installation is recorded.
