The safest PAN-OS patch is a controlled, release-specific change: confirm the supported upgrade path, export a configuration snapshot, prepare console access and rollback, then upgrade one high-availability (HA) peer at a time. After each reboot, verify software integrity, HA synchronization, identity mappings, routing, VPN, NAT, policy counters, logs, and representative sessions before returning the peer to service.
A standalone firewall cannot maintain traffic while it reboots, so schedule it inside an approved outage window. An HA pair can keep forwarding through a peer-by-peer upgrade when the documented failover order is followed, preemption is controlled, and synchronization is healthy.
What a safe PAN-OS patch actually requires
PAN-OS upgrades change more than the firewall image. Release notes can introduce new prerequisites, content-version requirements, intermediate releases, plugin or hardware constraints, and changed behavior in routing, VPN, User-ID, policy processing, or management. A safe change therefore has four parts:
- A supported path: the exact target release and any required intermediate versions are confirmed in that release’s notes and Upgrade/Downgrade Considerations.
- A controlled topology change: a standalone firewall is rebooted during an outage window; an HA pair is upgraded one peer at a time.
- A recoverable configuration: a named export is stored outside the firewall, with current software, content, licenses, HA, routing, and critical-flow details recorded.
- Evidence after reboot: the firewall is not considered fixed merely because it reports the new version. Forwarding, identity, control-plane neighbors, tunnels, translations, logs, and business flows must be checked.
The procedures below apply whether the image is obtained through the support portal or through Device > Software. Exact screen labels can vary by PAN-OS release, so use the target release’s documentation when a step differs.

1. Select the target release and supported path
Read release-specific documentation first
Before downloading an image, read the target PAN-OS release notes, known issues, and Upgrade/Downgrade Considerations. Confirm the firewall model or VM-Series platform, installed plugins, content versions, and management architecture against the documented requirements. Palo Alto Networks documents cases where a direct jump is unsupported and an intermediate release is mandatory.
Record the path in the change plan as a sequence, not just a final version. For example, write the current version, each required intermediate maintenance or feature release, and the final target. Do not infer that two releases are compatible because both appear in the software list. A release can be downloadable yet still be an invalid upgrade step for a particular starting version.
Capture the versions that affect the path
- Current PAN-OS version and target PAN-OS version.
- Dynamic-update and other content versions used by the firewall.
- Installed plugins, software components, and hardware or VM-Series model.
- Panorama and Log Collector versions, when centrally managed.
- HA peer versions and operational state.
If a required intermediate image is unavailable, a plugin is incompatible, or the release notes impose a condition you cannot satisfy, stop before installation. Resolve the dependency or choose a documented path; do not improvise a feature-release jump.
2. Build a rollback-ready change plan
Export a named configuration snapshot
Export a named configuration snapshot and store the file outside the firewall, in the location required by your change-control policy. The firewall creates an automatic backup, but Palo Alto Networks treats an external, explicitly named snapshot as a best practice because it remains available if the appliance or management plane cannot be reached.
Use a name that identifies the device, source version, target version, and change date. Protect the file as sensitive configuration data. Verify that it can be retrieved by the engineer who would perform recovery, rather than assuming that a backup exists somewhere in the management system.
Record the pre-change baseline
Capture the information needed to distinguish a patch regression from a pre-existing condition:

- Current PAN-OS and content versions.
- License status and expiration information relevant to security, support, VPN, and subscription features.
- HA mode, peer state, synchronization status, control links, data links, and monitored interfaces.
- Routing neighbors and their established state.
- VPN tunnels that must remain available, including representative site-to-site and remote-access paths.
- Critical inbound, outbound, VPN, NAT, and east-west flows, with the source, destination, protocol, expected policy, and test owner.
- Current policy hit counts, important session counts, and monitoring or telemetry destinations.
Save command output and screenshots where your process requires an audit trail. The purpose is not paperwork: without a baseline, a healthy but quiet tunnel or policy can be mistaken for a failed one, and a pre-existing routing warning can be incorrectly attributed to the reboot.

Prepare access that does not depend on the firewall dataplane
Confirm administrative access before the change and arrange console or other out-of-band access. Management access through the same interfaces and routes being changed is not a sufficient recovery plan. Ensure that the person performing the reboot can reach the device if the management plane takes longer to start than the dataplane or if a peer remains suspended.
3. Choose the procedure for your topology
| Deployment | Traffic impact during the upgrade | Required sequence | Key checks before returning service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone firewall | The firewall reboots and has an outage; schedule the work inside an approved window. | Install the image, reboot, wait for management and dataplane services, then perform the complete verification set. | Version, software-integrity validation, interfaces, routes, VPN, NAT, policy counters, logs, identity services, and representative sessions. |
| HA active/passive | Traffic can be carried by the other peer when failover is planned correctly; a failover still has the behavior and risk of a production role change. | Control preemption, suspend or fail over the active peer as documented for the release, upgrade one peer, synchronize it, then handle the other peer. | Peer state, HA links, configuration and session synchronization where applicable, routing, flows, and an explicit decision to fail back. |
| HA active/active | Impact depends on the release-specific peer order and traffic distribution; do not assume active/passive behavior. | Use the order and suspension procedure documented for that PAN-OS release, one peer at a time. | Both peer states, link health, session ownership, routing, VPN, NAT, policy counters, and representative traffic from each path. |
| Panorama-managed firewalls | Management-plane ordering adds a dependency before firewall work begins. | Upgrade Panorama and its Log Collectors before the managed firewalls, while keeping maintenance releases compatible. | Panorama connectivity, template and device-group management, commit health, then the same firewall and traffic checks. |
Standalone firewall
There is no peer to carry sessions while the appliance reboots. Announce the outage, confirm that monitoring and on-call staff know the expected maintenance window, and make sure dependent services have an alternate path if one exists. Do not shorten the verification phase merely because the image installation itself completed.
HA active/passive
To avoid downtime when upgrading firewalls in HA, update one HA peer at a time. In an active/passive pair, suspend or fail over the active peer according to the documented sequence for the target release. Disable preemption while working so that the upgraded or recovering peer does not unexpectedly reclaim the active role. Keep the upgraded peer suspended or passive until its version, links, and synchronization are normal and the change plan calls for failback.
HA active/active
Active/active upgrades require the release-specific peer order. Traffic ownership and session handling differ from active/passive operation, so do not copy an active/passive runbook. Follow the documented suspension and upgrade order, and validate both peers’ forwarding responsibilities before restoring normal behavior.
4. Account for Panorama and Log Collectors
When Panorama manages the firewalls, upgrade Panorama and its Log Collectors before upgrading the managed firewalls. The management and firewall maintenance releases must remain compatible. Palo Alto Networks cautions against managing a firewall on a later maintenance release than Panorama, so verify the supported relationship for the exact versions involved.

After Panorama is upgraded, check that it is healthy, reachable, and able to manage templates, device groups, and commits. Confirm that Log Collectors are online and receiving logs before touching a managed firewall. If Panorama cannot manage or commit cleanly, stop the firewall rollout and resolve that management-plane issue first.
5. Download, install, and reboot PAN-OS
- Obtain the image. Download the exact target or required intermediate release from the support portal, or use Device > Software on the firewall. Match the filename and version to the approved change record.
- Verify the target in the UI. Before installing, recheck the displayed version, release type, and device selection. A similarly named maintenance release is not interchangeable with the approved target.
- Install the software. Start the installation from the software page and wait for the firewall to report that the image is ready for reboot. Do not power-cycle the device or interrupt the process unless the release documentation gives a recovery procedure.
- Reboot deliberately. Use the reboot action presented by PAN-OS, or navigate to Device Setup > Operations > Reboot Device. For a standalone firewall, this is the planned outage. For an HA peer, confirm that the other peer is carrying the intended role before rebooting.
- Allow post-reboot validation. On a physical firewall, PAN-OS validates the software after the physical reboot as part of installation to check software integrity. Treat that validation as a required gate; do not declare success solely from the version string.
- Reconnect through the planned path. Use the management interface first, then console or out-of-band access if management is delayed. Record the new version and any boot, system, or upgrade messages.
Do not start the next peer or a second upgrade step while the first device is still completing boot, management initialization, or HA synchronization. A slow but progressing recovery is different from a failed installation; use console output and the release documentation to make that distinction.
6. Restore HA and management health
Check the upgraded peer before making it eligible for traffic
- Confirm the expected PAN-OS version and content versions.
- Confirm the peer is online in the High Availability widget.
- Check control, data, and monitored-interface links for normal status.
- Verify configuration and other applicable synchronization indicators are healthy.
- Review system and HA logs for errors, repeated transitions, or incompatibility messages.
Restore the peer to its functional HA state only after synchronization and link health are normal. Keep it suspended or passive until the approved plan calls for failback. Re-enable preemption only at the deliberate point in the runbook, after both peers and traffic tests are healthy.

Watch for a version-skew suspension
If a peer enters a suspended state because it is too far ahead or behind, stop the rollout. Palo Alto Networks notes that a peer more than one major release ahead can cause an outage. Do not force it into service or repeatedly toggle HA state. Preserve the external configuration snapshot and follow the documented staged upgrade, downgrade, or maintenance-mode recovery procedure for that release pair.
7. Verify identity services and traffic
User-ID on VM-Series
On VM-Series with User-ID enabled, a reboot clears the firewall’s current IP-to-user mappings while the sources repopulate them. Before allowing normal identity-dependent traffic, run:
show user ip-user-mapping all
show user group list
Wait for expected users, IP mappings, and groups to return. A successful command with an empty or unexpectedly small result is not a pass. Check the User-ID source connectivity and refresh behavior before concluding that identity-based policy is working.

Use Session Browser for real forwarding evidence
Open Monitor > Session Browser and confirm that new sessions are being created. Test the same representative flows recorded before the change:
- Inbound services through the expected security policy and NAT rule.
- Outbound internet or upstream connections, including DNS and other essential dependencies.
- Site-to-site and remote-access VPN traffic.
- NAT translations in both directions where applicable.
- East-west traffic between internal zones or segments.
Use a real client or service transaction for each critical path, not only a ping. Confirm the expected source and destination, security rule, action, translated addresses, byte counters, and return traffic. A session that appears briefly but receives no return packets is not equivalent to a successful application flow.
Validate control-plane dependencies
- Check interface state, errors, speed, and link negotiation where relevant.
- Confirm dynamic-routing neighbors are established and routes are present in the expected virtual router.
- Confirm VPN tunnels are up and that encrypted traffic increments counters.
- Check NAT translations and policy hit counts against the pre-change baseline.
- Verify monitoring, telemetry, DNS, authentication, and log forwarding destinations.
Review logs for failure signals
Review system, configuration, HA, routing, VPN, and threat logs. Look for repeated process restarts, commit failures, route withdrawals, tunnel negotiation errors, authentication failures, packet drops, or policy mismatches. Investigate unexplained changes rather than filtering them out because a few test sessions succeeded.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Stop conditions and rollback
Stop the rollout when any of these conditions occurs:
- The target release or intermediate path is unsupported or a required image is missing.
- Configuration, plugin, content, hardware, or management versions do not satisfy the release requirements.
- Panorama or a Log Collector is unhealthy or incompatible with the managed-firewall version.
- An HA peer becomes suspended, reports that the peer version is too old, or shows unhealthy synchronization or links.
- Software-integrity validation fails or the firewall cannot complete a normal reboot.
- Critical routes, VPN tunnels, NAT translations, identity mappings, policy counters, or representative business flows regress without a known, accepted explanation.
When stopping, leave the healthy peer carrying traffic if the topology permits, keep the upgraded peer suspended or isolated, preserve logs and the exported configuration, and notify the change owner. Use the release-specific downgrade or maintenance-mode recovery procedure. Do not improvise a downgrade across feature releases or restore an old configuration onto a mismatched software state without documented guidance.

Rollback decision points
For an HA pair, rollback is normally staged: keep the unaffected peer in service, diagnose the upgraded peer, and follow the supported downgrade sequence if required. For a standalone firewall, use the approved outage window and out-of-band access while preserving the snapshot and console evidence. The exact downgrade mechanics, intermediate versions, and configuration compatibility are release-dependent; the release documentation is the authority.

9. Standalone versus HA: practical trade-offs
| Decision axis | Standalone | HA pair |
|---|---|---|
| Expected interruption | Reboot outage is unavoidable; plan it inside an approved window. | Traffic can remain on the other peer when failover and synchronization are healthy, but role changes still carry operational risk. |
| Upgrade order | Install and reboot the single firewall. | Upgrade one peer at a time in the release-documented order. |
| Preemption | Not applicable. | Disable during the change and restore only after deliberate validation. |
| Synchronization gate | Validate services locally after reboot. | Do not restore a peer to service until HA state, links, and synchronization are normal. |
| Rollback path | Use the external snapshot and supported downgrade or recovery procedure during the outage. | Keep the healthy peer in service, suspend the problem peer, and use the supported staged recovery path. |
| Post-reboot scope | Interfaces, routes, VPN, NAT, policies, identity, logs, and representative flows. | All standalone checks plus peer roles, link health, synchronization, failover behavior, and traffic ownership. |
10. A change-window checklist
Before installation
- Target release, known issues, and supported intermediate path are recorded.
- Configuration snapshot is exported, named, stored externally, and retrievable.
- Current PAN-OS, content, license, plugin, Panorama, and Log Collector versions are recorded.
- Console or out-of-band access is tested.
- Critical inbound, outbound, VPN, NAT, and east-west test flows are documented.
- Standalone outage or HA failover plan is approved.
- Preemption handling and peer order are written into the runbook.
During installation
- The intended image is selected and installed from the support portal or Device > Software.
- Only the planned peer is suspended or rebooted.
- The firewall is allowed to complete reboot and software-integrity validation.
- No second peer or upgrade step begins before the first device is healthy.
After reboot
- Expected PAN-OS and content versions are shown.
- HA state, synchronization, and links are healthy.
- User-ID mappings and groups repopulate where enabled.
- Session Browser shows new sessions.
- Representative inbound, outbound, VPN, NAT, and east-west flows succeed.
- Interfaces, dynamic-routing neighbors, VPN tunnels, NAT translations, policy counters, monitoring, and telemetry are normal.
- System, configuration, HA, routing, VPN, and threat logs contain no unexplained regression.
Frequently asked questions
Can I patch a standalone firewall without any traffic interruption?
No. A standalone firewall must reboot to complete the software installation, so plan an approved outage window. Only a correctly designed redundant topology can carry traffic while one peer is offline.
Should I upgrade both HA peers at the same time?
No. Upgrade one peer at a time. Simultaneous upgrades remove the redundancy you are relying on and can leave both devices unavailable if the image or path has a problem.
Why did User-ID policies stop matching after the reboot?
On VM-Series with User-ID enabled, rebooting clears existing IP-to-user mappings. Run show user ip-user-mapping all and show user group list, then wait for expected entries to repopulate before treating identity-based traffic as healthy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat does a successful software installation prove?
It proves that the image installed and passed the applicable post-reboot software-integrity validation. It does not prove that routing, VPN, NAT, identity, policy, HA, or application traffic is healthy; those require separate checks.
What should I do if the upgraded peer says the other peer is too old?
Stop and keep the affected peer out of service. Preserve the configuration snapshot and logs, then follow the documented staged upgrade or downgrade path. A peer more than one major release ahead can cause an outage, so forcing the peer online is unsafe.
