Patch Exchange with the security update that matches the server’s installed release and build, then verify the installation and investigate any signs of web-shell activity. Exchange Emergency Mitigation can reduce exposure to known threats while you prepare an update, but it is temporary and does not replace the security update.
How do I choose the right Exchange update?
Start by establishing the Exchange edition and installed build for each server. Record its role and whether it is exposed to the internet so you can assess which systems need attention first. Then compare the installed release and build with Microsoft’s current Exchange update-status guidance and Exchange Server update FAQ.
Exchange updates are version-specific. Do not choose an update based on its date alone or apply one intended for a different cumulative update (CU) or release. Microsoft’s support path can change, so use the current guidance to identify the applicable update and its installation instructions.
How do I apply and verify the security update?
- Match the update to the server. Open Microsoft’s update-status page and Exchange Server update FAQ, then locate the update article for the installed Exchange release and CU.
- Follow that article’s installation instructions. Apply the security update (SU) that Microsoft identifies for the installation. Do not treat an update article for another release as a general recommendation.
- Verify the result. Follow the release-specific verification guidance. Microsoft’s July 14, 2026 article for Exchange Server 2019 CU14 security update KB5103214 recommends Exchange Server Health Checker to verify installation and identify additional actions. That article is specific to CU14; it does not establish which update applies to other installations.
Can Exchange Emergency Mitigation replace an SU?
No. The Exchange Emergency Mitigation (EM) service can apply temporary measures for known threats on applicable servers, including URL Rewrite rules and service or application-pool mitigations. These measures can reduce exposure while you prepare to install an SU, but Microsoft explicitly says the EM service is not a replacement for Exchange SUs.

Review which mitigations are applied or blocked so administrators can see what is active. After an SU or CU, some mitigations may no longer be needed. Follow Microsoft’s specific rollback steps only when the mitigation is no longer required and the EM service will not reapply it; do not remove a mitigation merely because an update was installed.
What should I do if OWA or ECP fails after an update?
Match the observed error to Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance before taking corrective action. Microsoft documents one specific case in which OWA or ECP reports “Could not load file or assembly Microsoft.Exchange.Common” after an update. For that symptom, Microsoft directs administrators to reinstall the SU from an elevated command prompt and restart the server.

This remedy is tied to that documented assembly-loading error. It is not a general fix for every post-update failure; use the instructions that match the actual error and Exchange release.

Continue monitoring Exchange client-access paths after patching. Microsoft’s security guidance identifies Exchange ClientAccess and FrontEnd locations as places where attackers have dropped web shells, including suspicious .aspx or .ashx files. Watch for unexpected file creation and investigate it in context: a new file by itself is not proof of compromise.

Correlate file creation with the process that initiated it where that information is available. Microsoft describes behavior-based monitoring as useful because web shells can be disguised; file names or a single indicator may not tell the whole story. If activity appears suspicious, follow your incident-response procedures and investigate the server rather than assuming that installing an update establishes it is clean.
