Patch Ivanti Connect Secure (ICS) by installing an authorized service package through the appliance’s supported upgrade path, then verify the exact release and build shown in System > Status after the required reboot. Treat the target release notes—not the package filename or installer selection—as the authority for which build fixes the vulnerability. Record the installation result, post-reboot status page, release-note revision, and relevant logs so the change can be audited.
What the patch process actually proves
An ICS patch is not complete when a package upload succeeds. You need to establish three separate facts:
- The package was accepted by the correct appliance platform and release path.
- The appliance rebooted into the intended software rather than merely staging or selecting it.
- The running release and build correspond to the release-note entry that fixes the vulnerability you are remediating.
Ivanti’s administrator console performs integrity and compatibility checks during service-package installation. Those checks reduce the risk of installing an unsuitable package, but they do not replace your responsibility to select a supported source-to-target path and to verify the running build afterward.
Information to collect before selecting a target
Do not choose a target version from a generic “latest build” list. The correct package depends on the appliance, its current software, its platform, and the advisory or CVE being addressed.

Identify the appliance and its current state
- Record whether the ICS instance is a hardware appliance or a virtual appliance.
- Record the current release and full build displayed by the administrative console.
- Note the appliance role, cluster or high-availability arrangement, and any maintenance dependency that could be affected by a reboot.
- Identify the exact vulnerability advisory or CVE that must be remediated.
The current build is the starting point for path validation. A package intended for a different branch, platform, or virtual-appliance format can fail compatibility checks or leave you with an unsupported installation.
Read the target release notes first
Use the release notes for the target release to confirm all of the following before downloading anything:
- The target release contains the CVE fix you need.
- Your current release can upgrade to that target through a documented path.
- The package applies to your hardware or virtual platform.
- The operation is an upgrade rather than a fresh-install requirement.
- Rollback or downgrade is available and supported if the change must be reversed.
- Known client, authentication, configuration, or interoperability effects are acceptable for your environment.
Ivanti explicitly requires administrators to use supported upgrade paths and rollback procedures. Bypassing version validation to install an older or otherwise unapproved release can create incompatibilities between installation scripts and platform utilities and may cause installation failures.

Compare candidate releases using the right criteria
When more than one release could address the issue, compare the candidates on operational facts rather than build number alone.

For example, the 22.8R2 release notes describe supported-path limits and state that some virtual appliances require a fresh installation. That is a different change plan from a routine in-place service-package upgrade and must be treated as such.

Obtain and prepare the service package
Use an authorized source
Obtain the package through Ivanti’s customer download channel for your entitlement and platform. Do not use a third-party mirror or an unverified copy. A package that has been renamed, truncated, or altered can fail integrity checks, and an untrusted source undermines the chain of evidence for a security remediation.
Plan the maintenance window
Ivanti documents that service-package installation takes several minutes, requires a reboot, and makes the administrator console unavailable while the appliance restarts. Set a window that covers the installation, reboot, health checks, and a possible rollback decision. Notify anyone who depends on the gateway for remote access, VPN, authentication, or administrative connectivity.

If the appliance is remote, arrange out-of-band or console access according to your organization’s controls rather than relying solely on the tunnel that the appliance provides.
Capture the pre-change record
Save the current System > Status release and build, the selected target release and build from its release notes, the change window, and the operator identity. If your process permits screenshots, capture the pre-change status page. This prevents a later mix-up between the old version and the version actually installed.
Install the package in the administrator console
- Confirm the target one more time. Match the appliance platform and current release to the supported path in the target release notes. Stop if the notes call for a fresh installation or a different intermediate release.
- Open the upgrade page. In the administrator console, go to Maintenance > System > Upgrade/Downgrade.
- Select the package source. Choose From File when the authorized service package is on the administration workstation, or From Staged Package when it has already been placed in the appliance’s supported staging area.
- Start the operation. Select the intended service package and click Install. Do not begin until the filename, platform, and target release match the approved change record.
- Let validation finish. The Service Package Installation Status page reports integrity checks, compatibility checks, status indicators, start and end times, and the software version being installed. Wait for these checks and the installation result; do not interrupt the process because the upload appears complete.
- Leave Deletes unselected for a normal upgrade. Ivanti documents the Deletes option for downgrade behavior. Selecting it during a normal upgrade can turn the operation into something other than the approved change.
- Allow the reboot. Follow the console prompt and wait for the appliance to restart. The administrator console will be unavailable during this period, so do not interpret a temporary connection failure as proof that the patch failed.
Retain the installation-status page or its exported record. It shows what the appliance accepted and when, but it is not the final proof of the running version; that proof comes from the post-reboot status page.

Verify that the appliance booted into the fixed build
1. Reconnect through the approved administrative interface
After the expected reboot interval, reconnect using the normal administrative path or the approved out-of-band path. If the console is not yet available, allow for service startup before treating the outage as abnormal.

2. Read the running version from System Status
Open System > Status. Ivanti describes this page as the dashboard for system version information, capacity utilization, uptime, and summary user information; it also provides a link to download the package corresponding to the software running on the system.
Record the exact release and build displayed after the reboot. Do not infer the running version from the package filename, a pre-upgrade screenshot, or the release selected in the installer. The appliance may reject a package, complete a different supported step, or fail before reboot, and only the post-reboot status page shows what is actually running.
3. Match the build to the release notes
Open the release notes for the target release and compare the complete release/build string with the build details in those notes. Confirm that the CVE or advisory appears in the fixed-issue list. If either the build or the security-fix entry does not match, treat the remediation as unverified and investigate before closing the change.
Examples of release-note build evidence
The following values are examples documented in Ivanti’s 2024 release notes. They illustrate the evidence format; they are not universal targets for every appliance or vulnerability.

A build number by itself is not a vulnerability statement. The release-note security list and build details must be evaluated together.
Preserve an auditable change record
A defensible record connects the approved target, the installation event, and the version that is running. Keep:
- The appliance type, current pre-change release/build, and post-change release/build.
- The target release-note title, revision or publication date, and the fixed-CVE entry used for the decision.
- The authorized package name and the installation-status result, including start and end times where shown.
- A post-reboot capture or export of System > Status.
- Relevant administrator-change and system-status events.
- The operator, maintenance window, approvals, and any exception or rollback decision.
Ivanti documents administrator-change and system-status logging when those logging options are enabled. Check that they were enabled for the change and export the relevant entries before routine log retention removes them. Store the evidence with the change ticket rather than only on the appliance.

The package fails integrity or compatibility checks
- Stop repeating the install with the same file.
- Verify that the download came from Ivanti’s authorized channel and that the file is complete.
- Confirm hardware versus virtual platform and the exact current release/build.
- Re-read the supported path for the target. An intermediate upgrade or fresh installation may be required.
- Do not bypass version validation to force an older release; Ivanti warns that doing so can cause installation-script and platform-utility incompatibilities.
The console is unavailable after clicking Install
During a normal service-package operation, the appliance reboots and the administrator console is unavailable. Wait through the planned reboot period and reconnect through the approved path. If the appliance does not return within the window, use the prepared out-of-band method and follow the release-specific recovery or rollback procedure rather than starting a second installation.

The installation page reports success, but System Status shows the old build
- Confirm that the appliance actually rebooted and that you are connected to the intended node, not a different member or management endpoint.
- Refresh the status page and record the displayed release/build again.
- Review the installation result and system events for a failed post-install step.
- Compare the result with the supported path and contact authorized Ivanti support if the appliance remains on the old version or enters an unexpected state.
Do not close the vulnerability ticket based only on a successful upload or a package filename.

The target notes require a fresh installation
For a virtual appliance covered by a release note such as 22.8R2, follow the documented fresh-install process, migration requirements, and configuration recovery plan. Do not improvise an in-place upgrade when the platform restriction says otherwise.
A downgrade or rollback is requested
Use only the rollback procedure supported for the current release and platform. The 25.1.3.0 notes state that downgrade operations are no longer supported after storage-mounting restriction changes and direct administrators to supported upgrade and rollback procedures. That restriction makes an informal “install the previous package” approach unsafe and potentially unavailable.
Post-upgrade checks beyond the version string
Once the exact fixed build is recorded, perform the service checks required by your change plan. Verify that administrative access, authentication, remote-access policies, certificates, logging, monitoring, and dependent client connections behave as expected. The specific tests depend on your deployment; the release notes and your organization’s acceptance checklist should define them.
Check uptime and system status after the reboot, and confirm that monitoring has returned to a healthy state. If a configuration or client compatibility issue appears, document it separately from the security-fix verification: the appliance can be running the fixed build even while a dependent service needs remediation.
Repeatable operator checklist
- Identify appliance type, current release/build, and the CVE or advisory.
- Read target release notes and validate source path, platform, fixed issue, install method, and rollback behavior.
- Obtain the authorized service package from Ivanti’s customer download channel.
- Schedule the reboot window and prepare approved administrative or out-of-band access.
- Capture the pre-change System > Status version and the target build evidence.
- Use Maintenance > System > Upgrade/Downgrade.
- Choose From File or From Staged Package, then click Install.
- Wait for integrity and compatibility checks and save the installation-status result.
- Leave Deletes unselected for a normal upgrade.
- Wait for the reboot and reconnect through the approved interface.
- Open System > Status and record the exact running release/build.
- Match that build and the CVE fix to the target release notes.
- Attach status evidence, installation results, release-note details, and relevant logs to the change record.
When to involve specialist support
Escalate to authorized Ivanti support or a qualified partner when the supported path is ambiguous, the release notes impose a platform-specific restriction, the appliance does not return after reboot, the running build differs from the approved target, or rollback is not supported for the installed release. Provide the appliance type, pre- and post-change versions, installation-status output, event records, and the exact release-note build you were targeting. That information lets support distinguish a path-selection problem from a package, platform, or post-reboot failure.
