If an LLM gateway may have been exposed, isolate it, install the vendor-fixed release, verify the artifact that is actually running, and rotate every secret the gateway could read. In the current LiteLLM case, Check Point Research says versions earlier than 1.83.9 are affected by CVE-2026-35029 (an authorization flaw) and CVE-2026-59823 (an SSRF flaw). Upgrade to LiteLLM 1.83.9 or later, then assume provider keys and other gateway-accessible credentials may be compromised whenever unauthorized access cannot be ruled out.
This runbook covers direct and transitive deployments, package and container provenance, containment, edge controls, credential replacement, and verification. Exact commands for Kubernetes, Docker, virtual machines, and cloud platforms vary, so use your platform’s current documentation for the final rollout and each provider’s current revocation procedure for keys.
What to do first
- Identify every gateway instance. Search production hosts, container registries, Python lockfiles, virtual environments, CI images, internal tools, agent frameworks, and MCP projects. Do not assume LiteLLM exists only where a team intentionally deployed a standalone proxy; transitive, unpinned dependencies can bring it into another application.
- Contain before changing evidence. Restrict public access to trusted networks and authenticated principals, preserve gateway logs and the running image or filesystem, and record the instance, version, deployment time, and secrets it can access.
- Patch from a trusted artifact. For the two Check Point findings, use LiteLLM 1.83.9 or later. Rebuild from a pinned, trusted package or image and verify the running version after deployment.
- Assume exposure when it cannot be disproved. Revoke and replace provider keys and every other secret reachable by the gateway process if logs, network telemetry, package history, or access records do not prove that unauthorized access was impossible.
- Test authorization after the change. A gateway user should be unable to call administrative routes or submit client-controlled routing and credential parameters unless an explicitly authorized role permits it.
Which LiteLLM versions and vulnerabilities are involved?
Check Point Research’s 2026 advisories identify two distinct issues in LiteLLM releases earlier than 1.83.9. The stated remediation for both is LiteLLM 1.83.9 or later.

| CVE-2026-35029 | Authorization problem that can expose administrative functions | CVSS 8.7/10, as reported by Check Point Research in 2026 | An attacker who reaches the gateway may be able to perform actions intended for administrators, depending on deployment configuration and the exposed route. | Move from any earlier release to LiteLLM 1.83.9 or later and verify the running artifact. |
| CVE-2026-59823 | Server-side request forgery (SSRF) | CVSS 5.3/10, as reported by Check Point Research in 2026 | The gateway can be induced to send requests to attacker-controlled or otherwise unintended destinations. | Move from any earlier release to LiteLLM 1.83.9 or later and verify the running artifact. |
| CVE-2026-84377 | Configuration and credential-injection risk addressed by an advisory reviewed on GitHub | Not stated in the advisory information summarized here | Client-controlled credentials, provider settings, or routing fields can undermine the boundary between an untrusted caller and the gateway’s privileged configuration. | Set general_settings.allow_client_side_credentials to false, restrict proxy keys, and block sensitive fields at the edge. |
The version number is not a substitute for a provenance check. A package named “LiteLLM” can be present through a lockfile, a base image, or another AI project, and a rebuilt service can still run an old layer if the deployment process did not replace the image or virtual environment.

Why a gateway flaw can become a provider-account breach
An LLM gateway is a control point, not merely a forwarding process. It may hold model-provider API keys, retrieve them from a secret store, read database connection strings, authenticate a web UI, and possess cloud, CI/CD, or orchestration permissions. Microsoft reported harvesting of “model-provider API keys, the LiteLLM master key, database connection strings, UI credentials, tokens, passwords, and other secret-like fields” in the incident context covered by its advisory.
That blast radius means rotating only the visible OpenAI or Anthropic key is insufficient when the gateway process could reach additional systems. The correct scope is the set of secrets available to the process, its service account, its mounted files, its environment, its metadata permissions, and its connected databases.
Inventory direct and indirect deployments
Search application and build sources
- List all running gateway workloads, services, virtual machines, scheduled jobs, and development environments.
- Search Python lockfiles, requirements files, virtual environments, container build files, and internal package mirrors for LiteLLM or a package that depends on it.
- Inspect container registries and CI/CD images, including cached layers and images used only for tests or migrations.
- Review agent frameworks, MCP servers, notebooks, and internal tools that may import the gateway as a library or start a proxy process indirectly.
- Check deployment manifests and secret references to determine which provider keys, database credentials, UI credentials, cloud tokens, and service-account permissions are reachable.
Record the evidence
For each instance, record the package or image digest, declared version, version actually running, exposure (internet-facing or private), listening address and port, authentication method, dependent applications, and the last known deployment time. Preserve logs and a copy of the image or environment before rebuilding so that later investigation is not limited to the patched state.
Contain an exposed gateway safely
Reduce reachability
Place the gateway behind a network policy, firewall, private load balancer, or VPN that admits only trusted callers. Remove direct internet exposure where the architecture permits it. Require authenticated principals at the edge and disable unauthenticated health or administrative endpoints unless they are strictly necessary.
Limit outbound access
Because SSRF can turn the gateway into a request source, restrict egress to the provider endpoints and internal destinations the service genuinely needs. Block access to cloud metadata services, control-plane addresses, private management networks, and arbitrary user-supplied URLs. Apply this control before patching if the gateway is still reachable.

Preserve logs and volatile evidence
Export gateway access logs, reverse-proxy logs, firewall and egress records, audit events, CI logs, and secret-manager access records. Keep timestamps in a common time zone. Capture the running image digest and package inventory, but do not copy secrets into incident tickets or chat.
Patch the gateway and verify the artifact
Use a trusted, pinned source
Build from a package or image whose provenance your team can verify, pin the dependency or image digest, and record the exact source used. Do not rely on a package name alone: LiteLLM’s March 2026 supply-chain incident involved published artifacts that were later removed.

Upgrade the highlighted vulnerable release range
For CVE-2026-35029 and CVE-2026-59823, replace every LiteLLM release earlier than 1.83.9 with 1.83.9 or later. Apply the same decision to indirect installations; a service does not become safe merely because the owning project calls it an agent, MCP server, or internal tool.
Verify what is running, not what was built
Check the version from inside the deployed environment, then compare it with the image digest or package hash recorded by the build. For a Python installation, a read-only check such as python -c "import litellm; print(litellm.__version__)" or pip show litellm can reveal the imported package version. For containers, inspect the image digest and execute the version check in the running container rather than only on the build host. Confirm that all replicas, workers, and background jobs have been replaced.
Roll back only to a known-safe artifact
If the upgrade fails, roll back to an artifact whose version and provenance are documented as safe. Do not restore an unverified cached image or package merely to recover availability; that can reintroduce the vulnerability or a compromised dependency.

Apply authorization and edge controls
Disable client-side credential overrides
For the CVE-2026-84377 mitigation, set general_settings.allow_client_side_credentials to false. This prevents callers from supplying their own provider credentials through a request path intended to use centrally managed secrets.
Restrict proxy keys
Issue proxy keys only to trusted callers, give them the smallest role and model scope required, set appropriate expiration and rotation dates, and remove unused keys. Separate administrative keys from application keys so a model-calling service cannot automatically administer the gateway.
Block sensitive request fields at the reverse proxy or API gateway
Reject requests containing client-controlled values for api_base, base_url, model_list, fallbacks, and provider-credential fields unless a narrowly defined, authenticated administrative workflow requires them. Enforce the rule at the edge as well as in application code so that alternate routes, libraries, or future configuration changes do not silently reopen the path.
Test the role boundary in practice
Use a low-privilege account and send ordinary model requests, then attempt administrative routes and configuration changes. The expected result is denial, with an audit event that identifies the principal and route. Repeat the test through every public listener, internal listener, and versioned API path; testing only the main UI does not prove that an alternate route is protected.
Rotate credentials after the exposure assessment
Rotate in an order that limits the time between revocation and replacement. Keep the gateway available only as long as needed to perform the change, and update every dependent application before the old value expires.

- Revoke provider API keys. Replace each key the gateway could read, including keys for providers that show no obvious misuse. Use the provider’s current console or revocation API, record the key identifier rather than the secret value, and set a new spending and permission limit where available.
- Replace the LiteLLM master key. Update the gateway configuration, administrative clients, automation, and any secret store entry that references it. Invalidate the old value rather than merely adding a second value.
- Rotate database credentials. Change passwords or tokens for databases reachable from the gateway and review whether the account had read, write, schema, or administrative privileges beyond its function.
- Rotate UI and session credentials. Change dashboard credentials, signing secrets, session keys, and administrator passwords. Revoke existing sessions if the platform supports it.
- Rotate cloud and CI/CD credentials. Replace cloud access keys, workload tokens, pipeline secrets, registry credentials, and deployment tokens available to the process or its service account.
- Rotate Kubernetes and host credentials. Replace service-account tokens, SSH keys, mounted certificates, and other credentials the workload could read. Review role bindings and remove permissions that were not required.
- Update consumers and verify failures are intentional. Put the new values in the gateway and every dependent application, restart or reload components as required, and confirm that the old credentials fail while the new least-privilege credentials work.
| Credential class | Why it may be reachable | Replacement and validation |
|---|---|---|
| Model-provider API keys | Used for outbound inference and often stored in gateway configuration or a secret manager | Revoke, issue replacements with the narrowest model and spending scope, then inspect provider usage and billing. |
| Gateway master and proxy keys | Control gateway administration or caller authentication | Replace master and administrative values, expire old proxy keys, and test low-privilege denial of administrative routes. |
| Database credentials | Gateway state, configuration, usage, or logs may be stored in a database | Rotate the account, review query and write history, and reduce privileges to the required tables or operations. |
| UI, session, and signing secrets | Enable dashboard access or session validation | Change credentials and signing material, revoke sessions, and require fresh authentication. |
| Cloud, CI/CD, registry, and orchestration tokens | Build, deploy, pull images, or access cloud services | Revoke and reissue, inspect use logs, and remove unused role bindings and scopes. |
| SSH keys, certificates, and mounted files | May be readable from the host, volume, sidecar, or service account | Replace the material, check host and network access logs, and remove unnecessary mounts. |
Check the March 2026 LiteLLM package incident
LiteLLM’s security update states that PyPI versions 1.82.7 and 1.82.8 were compromised and removed. It also states that customers using the official LiteLLM Proxy Docker image were not impacted by those packages because that image pins dependencies. The documented exposure window for the compromised releases was approximately 40 minutes.
Determine whether either package was installed in a build, test, development, or production environment. Check package-manager logs, CI caches, lockfiles, image layers, artifact registries, and deployment records. If either release ran with access to secrets, treat every secret reachable by that process as potentially exposed and follow the full rotation procedure. A transitive dependency is still an exposure path even when no one deliberately deployed LiteLLM as a standalone service.
Choose between a hot patch, isolation, and a rebuild
The right remediation path depends on evidence and operational constraints, not just the CVE score.
| Option | Use when | Advantages | Risks and required follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot patch in place | The instance is private or tightly controlled, exploitation evidence is absent, the artifact can be trusted, and downtime is unacceptable. | Fastest return to a fixed release with minimal application change. | Old files, packages, credentials, or persistence may remain. Rebuild or deeper inspection is needed if provenance or compromise is uncertain. |
| Temporary isolation | The service is internet-facing, suspicious requests are present, or the team needs time to preserve evidence and rotate secrets. | Reduces additional access while investigation and replacement proceed. | Inference traffic may be interrupted. Maintain only the minimum trusted access needed for evidence collection and controlled remediation. |
| Full rebuild and redeploy | The image or environment is untrusted, a compromised package may have run, or the gateway had a broad credential and network footprint. | Removes unknown files and stale dependencies and provides a clean provenance trail. | Requires a tested build, coordinated secret replacement, and validation of every consumer and replica. |
Evaluate each option against six questions: Was the gateway internet-facing? Is there evidence of exploitation or unusual outbound traffic? Which credentials and systems were reachable? Can the replacement artifact be proven trustworthy? How much downtime is acceptable? Can the team demonstrate least-privilege behavior after the change?

Verify that remediation worked
Version and provenance checks
- Every replica reports LiteLLM 1.83.9 or later for the two Check Point findings.
- The package or image digest matches the approved build record.
- No build, test, or production job still installs 1.82.7, 1.82.8, or another earlier release through an unpinned dependency.
- Old containers, virtual environments, and cached layers are removed or prevented from serving traffic.
Authorization checks
- A low-privilege caller can perform only its assigned model operations.
- The same caller receives denial for administrative functions and configuration changes.
- Requests containing
api_base,base_url,model_list,fallbacks, or provider-credential fields are rejected at the edge when they are not part of an approved administrative workflow. general_settings.allow_client_side_credentialsis set tofalse, and the effective configuration—not merely the source file—shows that value.
Network and secret checks
- Egress is limited to required provider and internal endpoints, with metadata and management destinations blocked.
- Old provider keys, master keys, database passwords, UI credentials, tokens, and certificates fail authentication.
- New credentials work only from the intended applications and roles.
- Provider usage, billing, gateway logs, DNS, firewall, and cloud audit records show no unexplained requests or configuration changes after rotation.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Updating the lockfile but not the running service
A source change does not patch an already running process. Rebuild, redeploy every replica, and inspect the imported version inside the workload.

Rotating only the model key
The gateway may also expose its master key, database, UI, cloud, CI/CD, orchestration, and host credentials. Use the process’s complete access path to define the rotation set.
Trusting a package name or tag
A mutable image tag, cached layer, or unpinned transitive dependency can leave an old or compromised artifact in production. Approve and record a digest or equivalent immutable build identity.
Relying on application authorization alone
Alternate routes and future code changes can bypass a single application check. Block sensitive fields at the reverse proxy or API gateway and verify denial through every exposed listener.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDeleting evidence before checking exposure
Destroying logs or images removes the information needed to decide whether credentials were accessed. Preserve evidence first, then isolate and rebuild.
Operational checklist for closure
- All direct and transitive gateway deployments are inventoried.
- Public access is removed or restricted to trusted, authenticated principals.
- Logs, images, package records, and secret-access evidence are preserved.
- LiteLLM is upgraded to 1.83.9 or later for the two Check Point findings, and the running artifact is verified.
- The client-side credential override is disabled.
- Proxy keys and administrative roles are separated and minimized.
- Sensitive routing and provider-credential fields are blocked at the edge.
- Provider, gateway, database, UI, cloud, CI/CD, orchestration, host, and certificate secrets are rotated when access cannot be ruled out.
- Old credentials are revoked and tested for failure.
- Provider usage, billing, gateway, network, and cloud logs are reviewed for suspicious activity.
- Low-privilege authorization and outbound-network tests pass on every listener and replica.
- Dependency pins, image digests, and rebuild procedures are documented so an indirect installation cannot silently reappear.
When to escalate
Escalate to your incident-response team and the relevant providers when you find administrative actions by an unknown principal, unexpected outbound requests, secret-manager reads, unexplained provider spend, altered gateway configuration, a compromised package in a build or production environment, or an inability to prove which credentials the process could access. Continue containment and credential revocation while the investigation determines the exact scope.
