Patch Adobe applications through Adobe’s own update channel, then prove remediation by recording the application’s exact build before and after installation and comparing that value with the matching Adobe security bulletin. A completion notification is not sufficient evidence: the post-update About dialog, product track, operating system, and bulletin threshold must all agree.
The procedures below cover Creative Cloud applications, Acrobat, and Reader on Windows and macOS, including recovery from failed downloads and an evidence-based workflow for managed fleets.
What “patched” means for an Adobe remote-code-execution flaw
A remote-code-execution (RCE) vulnerability can let crafted content cause an application to run attacker-controlled instructions. Adobe security bulletins may group RCE with other impacts, such as privilege escalation, arbitrary file-system reads or writes, memory exposure, or denial of service. Installing an update is only half of the job. You also need to demonstrate that the installed product, release track, platform, and build correspond to the fixed release named by Adobe.

- Correct product: identify the actual application, such as Acrobat Reader, Acrobat, or a specific Creative Cloud app.
- Correct release track: Acrobat and Reader may be on the Continuous track or the Acrobat 2024 Classic track. Their build numbering and security thresholds are different.
- Correct platform: compare a Windows installation with the Windows entry in the bulletin and a macOS installation with the macOS entry. Do not substitute one platform’s threshold for the other.
- Recorded build evidence: capture the version shown in the application’s About dialog after the update and retain it with the bulletin ID and endpoint identity.
Adobe’s September 8, 2026 APSB26-141 bulletin is a useful current example. It describes updates for Acrobat and Reader on Windows and macOS that address arbitrary code execution and several other vulnerability impacts. The exact affected builds are listed later in this guide.

Choose the right Adobe update channel
The update route depends on how the product was installed. Use the Creative Cloud desktop application for Creative Cloud applications. Use Acrobat or Reader’s built-in updater, or Adobe’s full installer, for Acrobat and Reader. In an organization, wrap Adobe’s installer in the approved software-distribution process and still verify the build locally.

Automatic updates can reduce the time a device remains exposed, but an automatic setting does not prove that a particular endpoint reached a fixed build. Treat automation as a delivery method and the About-dialog build as the verification artifact.
Update and verify Creative Cloud applications
Install available updates
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Select Apps.
- Open Manage updates.
- Select Check for updates to refresh the available releases.
- For every application that needs the security release, select Update and let the installation finish. If several applications are listed, process each one rather than assuming that updating one product updates the others.
Adobe’s current Creative Cloud instructions also let you enable automatic updates for all applications or for selected applications in the same management area. Automatic updates are convenient for unmanaged devices; in a controlled environment, confirm that the setting does not conflict with testing, plug-in compatibility, or your organization’s change window.
Record the application build
- Launch the updated Creative Cloud application itself, not only the Creative Cloud desktop manager.
- On Windows, open Help and choose About. On macOS, open the application-name menu and choose About.
- Record the complete version/build string exactly as displayed, together with the endpoint name, operating system, and time of collection.
- Compare that value with the product, platform, and release-track entry in the applicable Adobe security bulletin.
Adobe also documents a quicker inventory view: move the pointer over an installed application in the Creative Cloud desktop app to display its version. Use that view for triage, but prefer the application’s own About dialog for final evidence because it is tied to the binary that is running.
Verify the Creative Cloud desktop application
The desktop manager has its own version and can require a separate update. On Windows, choose Help > About Creative Cloud. On macOS, choose Creative Cloud > About Creative Cloud. Record this value separately from the version of each Creative Cloud application. A current manager does not imply that every managed application is current, and an updated application does not prove that the manager itself is on the latest release.

Update and verify Acrobat or Reader
Use the in-product updater
- Open Acrobat or Reader.
- Choose Help > Check for Updates.
- Allow the updater to download and install the offered release. Follow any restart instruction; a file that has downloaded but has not been applied is not a patched installation.
- Close and reopen Acrobat or Reader.
- Open the About dialog and record the full product name, track, version/build, operating system, and collection time.
Adobe’s security bulletin guidance states that users may update manually through Help > Check for Updates, and that products may update automatically. Do not rely on the presence of an update banner, a “you are up to date” message, or a successful download alone. The post-restart About value is the evidence to compare.
Use the full installer when the in-product update cannot finish
Adobe provides a full Acrobat Reader installer through its Acrobat Reader Download Center. Use the installer that matches the operating system and product edition, and obtain it through your normal approved software channel. After installation, launch the product and repeat the About-dialog check. If the full installer is delivered by IT, retain the package identity or hash supplied by Adobe and the endpoint’s resulting build.

Acrobat and Reader may use the Continuous track or the Acrobat 2024 Classic track. A build number from one track must not be judged against the other track’s threshold. Before declaring remediation, write down the track shown by the product or identified in the bulletin, then compare like with like.
Compare the installed build with Adobe’s security bulletins
Security bulletins are the authority for affected and fixed versions. Read the entry for the exact product, track, operating system, and release date. If the bulletin lists a fixed version, the installed build must meet or exceed that version according to Adobe’s versioning scheme. If it lists affected versions but your edition or platform is not shown, do not infer coverage; locate the bulletin entry for that edition or obtain clarification through your organization’s security process.

For APSB26-141, the affected-version boundaries above tell you which builds require the update. Use the bulletin’s platform-specific fixed-release information when recording your target. Do not convert an “affected and earlier” boundary into a guessed fixed build if the entry you are using does not state one.
How to interpret a boundary
When Adobe says “26.002.21900 and earlier” are affected, a device displaying 26.002.21900 remains in the affected set. The comparison is inclusive. The same applies to “24.001.30383 and earlier” for Acrobat 2024 Classic. Capture all digits, including leading zeros and the number of components, because a shortened value can make two different builds appear identical.

Why CVSS does not replace patch verification
CVSS communicates severity and exploit impact; it is not a version test. APSB26-44’s CVE-2026-34622 has a CVSS base score of 8.6 and a Critical rating, but an endpoint is remediated only when its installed track and build meet the fixed version specified by Adobe. Record both the vulnerability context and the build result in your security ticket.
Run an end-to-end verification check
Use the following sequence whenever you patch a workstation or close an enterprise remediation ticket:
- Identify the asset. Record the endpoint name, user or device owner, operating system and architecture if your inventory requires it.
- Identify the product. Record whether the application is a Creative Cloud app, Acrobat, or Reader, and note the Acrobat/Reader release track.
- Capture the pre-update value. Open the relevant About dialog before patching and save the complete version/build string. This shows what was actually installed, rather than what inventory software expected.
- Apply the update. Use Creative Cloud’s Manage updates workflow, Acrobat/Reader’s Check for Updates command, the full supported installer, or your approved distribution tool.
- Restart the application. Close all relevant processes if requested, reopen the application, and wait for it to finish loading.
- Capture the post-update value. Open About again and retain the new complete build string. A notification that an update completed without this second reading is incomplete evidence.
- Match the bulletin. Compare product, track, platform, and build with the relevant Adobe bulletin. Mark the endpoint remediated only when the comparison passes.
- Record exceptions. If the build did not change, the product reports an unexpected track, or the update failed, keep the endpoint open and document the recovery action rather than closing the ticket.
For a small number of computers, a dated screenshot or exported inventory record can support the ticket. For a fleet, collect the same fields in a consistent schema so that a package-success report cannot be mistaken for endpoint remediation.
Recover from a failed Creative Cloud update
Adobe identifies several specific causes for Creative Cloud update errors: a corrupted download, an invalid signature on the downloaded file, a mismatch between the size stated in the manifest and the file’s actual size, or a file that is temporarily missing from the update server. These messages indicate a delivery or integrity problem; they are not a reason to disable signature checks.
Retry through Manage updates
- Open Creative Cloud and go to Apps > Manage updates.
- If a stuck update shows a Cancel control, select it and allow the current attempt to stop.
- Wait briefly, then select Update again.
- If the application is no longer listed correctly, choose Check for updates to refresh the update manifest and retry.
- After a successful installation, reopen the application and verify its About build. Do not close the issue based only on the disappearance of the update error.
Escalate integrity and server errors safely
If signature validation, manifest-size, or missing-file errors persist, use Adobe’s supported installer or redeploy through the organization’s controlled software-distribution process. Preserve the error text, endpoint name, attempted version, and time; those details help distinguish a local cache problem from a temporary service-side failure. Never bypass signature validation, substitute an unverified package, or manually replace application files.

When the update appears successful but the build is unchanged
- Confirm that you opened the same product that was updated; the Creative Cloud desktop manager and the application have separate version displays.
- Check whether the application was running during installation and needed a complete restart.
- Verify that the installer targeted the intended operating system and release track.
- Run Check for updates again, then use the supported installer if the About value still remains in the affected range.
- Record the unchanged build and escalate rather than reporting remediation.
Deploy Adobe security updates in a managed environment
Adobe’s APSB26-26 bulletin names several administrative deployment options: AIP-GPO, bootstrapper, SCUP/SCCM on Windows, and Apple Remote Desktop or SSH on macOS. Select the method that is approved and already monitored by your organization. The tool delivers the package; it does not replace post-install verification.
Build the deployment record before release
- Adobe bulletin ID and publication or update date.
- Product name and release track.
- Target operating system and platform-specific fixed build.
- Adobe installer package identity and hash, when supplied.
- Deployment collection, ring, or device group.
- Expected restart or user-session requirements.
- Endpoint result and the post-install About/version value.
For example, a Windows rollout may publish the Adobe package through SCUP/SCCM, while a macOS rollout may use Apple Remote Desktop or SSH. Keep the target build tied to the bulletin entry for that platform; do not use a single cross-platform threshold by convenience.
Use staged deployment and exception handling
- Deploy to a pilot group that represents the supported Windows and macOS configurations.
- Confirm that the package installs and that the application launches.
- Collect About-dialog builds from pilot endpoints and compare them with the bulletin before expanding the deployment.
- Roll out to the remaining groups in controlled waves.
- Retry transient failures and route persistent signature, manifest, or missing-file errors to the package owner.
- Produce a list of endpoints whose post-install build is missing, unchanged, or still affected; those devices remain open exceptions.
A successful job status can mean only that a distribution system copied or ran a package. The security control is complete when the endpoint reports the expected application build and that value is retained with the deployment record.

The practical choice is often a combination: allow automatic updates for ordinary personal devices, while using a managed package and explicit version collection for systems subject to security reporting or change control.
Common verification mistakes
Checking only the update notification
A notification describes an updater state, not necessarily the binary currently loaded. Reopen the application and read About after installation.

Comparing the wrong track
Continuous and Acrobat 2024 Classic builds are not interchangeable. Label the track before comparing any number.
Using a Windows threshold on macOS
Bulletins organize support by platform. Match the operating system shown in the endpoint record to the platform-specific bulletin entry.

Recording a shortened version
Save the complete displayed build. Omitting a component or leading zero makes later comparisons unreliable.
Assuming the Creative Cloud manager proves application coverage
The manager and each installed Creative Cloud application have separate version values. Verify the application that contains the vulnerable code.
Closing a ticket after package deployment
Distribution success is not endpoint evidence. Require the post-install About value and retain it with the bulletin ID.
One-page operational checklist
- Identify the Adobe product and, for Acrobat or Reader, the release track.
- Identify Windows or macOS and locate the matching Adobe bulletin.
- Record the complete About-dialog build before patching.
- Update through Creative Cloud, Help > Check for Updates, the supported full installer, or approved enterprise tooling.
- Restart the application.
- Record the complete About-dialog build after patching.
- Compare the post-update value with the bulletin’s affected and fixed-version information.
- Keep the endpoint open as an exception if the value is unchanged, in the affected range, or cannot be verified.
- For failures, retry through Manage updates, refresh the update list, and escalate persistent integrity or server errors without bypassing signature validation.
This process turns “Adobe says it updated” into a defensible statement: the specified application on the specified platform is running a recorded build that meets the applicable Adobe security bulletin’s requirement.
