Patch a ROM hack by applying the patch to an unmodified copy of the exact ROM revision, region, header state, trim state, and byte order named by the hack’s author. Choose a patcher that supports the patch format, write the result to a new file, and verify the source and output checksums when they are published. Never experiment on your only clean ROM.
A patch file is a set of changes, not a playable game. A wrong source file can produce a file that looks normal but crashes, shows a black screen, or fails to boot. The safest process is therefore: read the release notes, identify the format and required source, hash your copy, patch a duplicate, preserve the original, and test the output.
What a ROM patch changes—and what “corruption” usually means
An IPS, BPS, UPS, XDelta, or PPF file contains instructions for changing one particular source file into a modified output. It does not contain the complete game by itself. The patch was created against a specific dump, so the same title can be incompatible if it comes from another region, revision, header state, trim state, byte order, track layout, or compression format.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
In most failed patches, the original ROM has not been physically damaged. The problem is that the patcher was given an unexpected input, the wrong patch format was selected, patches were applied in the wrong order, or the output replaced the clean file. Treat “corruption” as both a technical risk and a file-management risk: a bad output is recoverable when the clean source remains untouched, but it is much harder to recover after overwriting your only copy.

Read the hack’s instructions before opening a patcher
The readme or release notes are part of the patch specification. Format metadata alone cannot tell a tool which region, revision, header state, or patch order the author expects. Record these details before doing anything:
- Target game and platform: confirm that the patch is for the same title and system.
- Region and revision: note labels such as USA, Europe, Japan, Rev 1, or a particular release number.
- Source checksum: copy the published CRC32 or SHA-1 exactly. A title shown by an emulator is not proof that the dump is the right one.
- Header or trim requirement: check for a 512-byte SNES copier header, a trimmed or full-size Nintendo DS image, or another required layout.
- Patch format and order: identify IPS, BPS, UPS, XDelta/VCDIFF, PPF, and whether several files must be applied in sequence.
- Expected output checksum: save it for the final verification step if the author provides one.
- Special image instructions: disc-based releases may require one exact track or an uncompressed image rather than RVZ, NKit, CHD, or CSO.
If the notes say “clean” ROM, that means unmodified. It does not merely mean a file whose name contains the game title. Do not start with another hack, a translation, a previously patched image, or a dump that has been converted without checking the author’s requirements.

Choose the patcher by format
Do not rename an extension to make an incompatible utility accept it. Delta Patcher’s guide states that it cannot open IPS, BPS, UPS, or PPF files; changing .bps to .xdelta does not convert the data. Use a utility that explicitly supports the actual format.
| Patch format | Suitable tool direction | Checksum and compatibility considerations |
|---|---|---|
| IPS | Flips or another IPS patcher; RetroArch also documents IPS soft-patching | IPS stores no source checksum. A patcher may accept the wrong ROM, so compare the author’s published source and output hashes yourself. |
| BPS | Flips or another BPS-compatible patcher | BPS stores source, output, and patch checksums. A compatible tool can detect an incorrect source and validate the result. |
| UPS | A UPS-compatible patcher or a documented RetroArch workflow | UPS stores input and output checksums, allowing source and result checks when the utility implements them. |
| XDelta/VCDIFF | Delta Patcher, xdelta3, or RetroArch where the selected core supports it | Source checking depends on how the XDelta patch was created. Confirm requirements in the release notes rather than assuming every XDelta file validates its input. |
| PPF | A PPF-capable utility such as PPF-O-MATIC | Confirm the exact disc image, track, and layout. A different conversion or track arrangement can make an otherwise correct patch fail. |
Delta Patcher for XDelta files
The Delta Patcher guide updated September 17, 2026, and checked against Delta Patcher 3.1.6, is aimed at XDelta patching. Its documented backup option can help preserve the source while creating the modified file. Use the current release and confirm that your operating system can run it.
Flips for IPS and BPS files
Flips documents both graphical and command-line use for IPS and BPS. Its repository describes the project as being in maintenance mode, so check the current release and operating-system compatibility before relying on it. It is not a general-purpose UPS, XDelta, or PPF utility.

RetroArch soft-patching
Libretro’s official documentation says, “RetroArch currently supports the UPS, IPS, BPS, and XDelta patching formats.” Actual behavior also depends on the selected core and its documented support. Soft-patching can be convenient, but it does not remove the need to use the correct region, revision, header state, or patch order.
Browser patchers
PatchMyROM states that its browser tool supports IPS, UPS, BPS, and XDelta and processes files locally in the browser rather than uploading them. That is the provider’s own privacy description, not an independent audit. If you have strict file-handling requirements, use a locally installed utility you trust and keep your files offline.
Safe patching workflow
- Extract the release files. Unpack the patch archive and read every included readme or release note. Do not patch while the source or patch is still inside a compressed archive unless the tool explicitly supports that workflow.
- Identify the exact source. Write down the required platform, region, revision, checksum, header state, trim state, byte order, disc track, and any conversion instructions.
- Preserve the clean original. Copy the source into a separate
Cleanfolder and mark it read-only if your operating system allows. Make a second duplicate inWork. Never use the only clean copy as the output destination. - Hash the working source. Compare it with the author’s CRC32 or SHA-1. On Windows, examples are
certutil -hashfile "game.gba" SHA1and PowerShell’sGet-FileHash -Algorithm SHA1 "game.gba". On macOS or Linux, useshasum -a 1 game.gba. Use a CRC32 utility when the release lists CRC32. Record the complete value, including leading zeroes. - Resolve a mismatch before patching. Check region, revision, header, trim, byte order, and image format. Do not randomly add or remove a header, convert formats, or force the patch in the hope that it will work. A mismatch is evidence that your input variant differs from the author’s.
- Select a format-compatible patcher. Open the utility and choose the patch file type it documents. For an XDelta workflow, select the original-file field, the XDelta patch, and a separate output path. For tools with a backup option, enable it; still keep an independent clean copy.
- Apply patches in the stated order. If a release contains a base patch and a language, bug-fix, or update patch, follow the author’s sequence. Do not apply a later patch to the clean source unless the notes explicitly say to do so. RetroArch’s documented multi-IPS behavior uses extension numbering to establish order, so preserve names such as
.ips,.ips1, and.ips2when that convention is required. - Save under a new name. Use a descriptive output name such as
Game - Hack - patched.gba. Do not save over the clean file, and do not leave the output with an ambiguous extension. - Verify the output. Hash the finished file and compare it with the expected output checksum when one is published. A matching filename, plausible size, or a patcher message saying “complete” does not establish that the output is correct.
- Test in a compatible emulator or core. Load the new file, not the clean source, and confirm that it boots and reaches the expected title or opening screen. Keep the clean source and patch files so you can repeat the process if a later issue is discovered.
Platform-specific source mismatches
Game Boy Advance
GBA hacks commonly use IPS, BPS, or UPS, with XDelta appearing in some releases. The cited practical guide describes GBA dumps as having no extra header, but region and release variants still matter. Match the readme’s checksum rather than assuming every file with the same game title is interchangeable.

Nintendo DS
XDelta is common for Nintendo DS releases in the cited guide. A trimmed dump can differ from the full-size dump used to build the patch. If the instructions require a full-size image, do not trim it; if they require a trimmed image, do not expand or convert another file and assume it is equivalent.
SNES
SNES files may include a 512-byte copier header or may omit it. A patch built for one form generally will not apply correctly to the other. The readme’s checksum and header instruction take priority over conventions used by your emulator.

The extensions .z64, .n64, and .v64 can represent different byte orders. Use the byte order named by the author. Renaming an extension does not reorder bytes; a proper conversion tool may be required, and only when the release instructions call for it.

Disc-based systems
Patch the exact file or track specified by the author. RVZ, NKit, CHD, and CSO are compressed or converted forms and may need to be converted back to the expected plain image first. Track layout, sector arrangement, and image type can matter even when the game appears to be the same release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How checksum behavior differs by format
Checksums are a decision tool, not a decoration. BPS records checksums for the source, output, and patch. UPS records input and output checksums. These formats can let a compatible patcher reject an incorrect source or confirm the generated file. IPS has no embedded source checksum, so an IPS utility may apply changes to an incompatible file without warning. XDelta source checks depend on how the patch was authored.
When a checksum does not match, stop and investigate the file variant. Compare the exact region and revision, inspect header and trim requirements, and verify that the source has never been patched. If the author lists only an output hash, you can still use it after patching, but an unexpected output means the source or patching process needs review.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting failed patches
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The patcher rejects the source immediately | Wrong region, revision, checksum, header, trim state, or format | Re-read the requirements and hash the clean source. Obtain the exact variant named by the author; do not force the operation. |
| The utility says the file type is unsupported | The patcher does not support the actual format, or the extension was renamed | Identify the real format from the release notes or format signature and use a compatible utility. Renaming does not convert a patch. |
| The patch completes but the game shows a black screen | Wrong source variant, wrong N64 byte order, wrong SNES header, or wrong DS trim state | Return to the clean copy, correct the byte-level requirement, and apply the patch again. |
| The game boots but crashes or has missing content | Patch order was wrong, a prior patch was used as the source, or the disc image/track differs | Start again from the untouched source and follow the documented sequence and image requirements. |
| The output has a plausible name and size but fails verification | The patch was applied to an incompatible source or the wrong patch file was selected | Compare source and output hashes, confirm the patch filename and order, and regenerate the output in a new folder. |
| You are uneasy about a browser service handling the file | Privacy requirements exceed the provider’s stated local-processing model | Use a locally installed patcher you trust. PatchMyROM’s local-only statement is a vendor claim, not an independent audit. |
Desktop, emulator, and browser approaches compared
| Approach | Best fit | Checks and control | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local desktop patcher | Repeatable patching with files kept on your computer | Easy to hash source and output, preserve backups, and inspect exact paths | You must install a utility that supports the format and your operating system |
| RetroArch soft-patching | Loading supported patches while launching content through a compatible core | Libretro documents UPS, IPS, BPS, and XDelta support, but core behavior varies | Core-specific requirements and multi-patch naming can be less transparent than a standalone output |
| Browser patcher | Occasional patching without installing software | PatchMyROM says processing is local in the browser; independently verify the output when possible | Less control over the software environment and privacy model than a trusted local tool |
Rules that prevent most irreversible mistakes
- Keep at least one untouched clean source in a separate folder or drive.
- Use a new output filename for every attempt; include the hack name and version if the release supplies one.
- Never patch a file that already contains another hack unless the author explicitly documents that sequence.
- Do not infer compatibility from the game title, extension, file size, or emulator recognition alone.
- Do not change headers, trim states, byte order, or disc formats unless the release notes require that exact conversion.
- When several patch files are supplied, preserve their original names and apply the documented order.
- Verify an expected output checksum before treating the file as finished.
- If a patch fails, return to the clean source rather than repeatedly modifying the failed output.
