To pair wireless headphones or earbuds, first put the headset into Bluetooth pairing mode, then open Bluetooth settings on the phone, laptop, or compatible TV, select the headset’s displayed name, and approve the request. Finally, play audio and confirm that the headset is the selected output. Turning the headset on is not always enough: a new source device usually cannot find it until it is discoverable.

The exact button, case action, touch gesture, and menu wording depend on the headset model and source-device software. Use the instructions below as the platform procedure, but follow the headset manual for its specific pairing control.

What pairing does—and what it does not do

Pairing creates a saved Bluetooth relationship between two devices. The phone, computer, or TV records the headset so it can be recognized again later. Connecting is the active session in which audio is actually sent to the headset. A headset can therefore be listed as paired but not currently connected.

That distinction explains two common surprises: a headset may not appear during a first search because it is not in pairing mode, and a previously saved headset may require a separate Connect action before it plays sound.

Prepare both devices

  • Confirm Bluetooth support. Phones normally include it. A Windows laptop may not; Microsoft advises checking for Bluetooth capability first. A computer without built-in Bluetooth needs a compatible adapter.
  • Charge the headset and source device. Low power can interrupt discovery or connection.
  • Move the headset close to the source device. Keep the headset out of a second device’s active Bluetooth connection while you are pairing it.
  • Find the model-specific pairing instruction. Over-ear headphones may use a power or pairing button. Earbuds may require opening the case, holding a case button, or using a touch control. One manufacturer’s gesture is not universal.
  • Decide which device should carry the audio. If the headset is already connected to another phone, laptop, or TV, disconnect it there or temporarily turn Bluetooth off on that device.

The universal pairing procedure

  1. Turn on Bluetooth at the source. Open the phone, laptop, or TV’s Bluetooth or accessory settings. On Windows, first verify that the computer has Bluetooth hardware.
  2. Enter pairing mode on the headset. Use the exact button, case action, or touch sequence in the headset’s manual. Wait for the indicator or voice prompt that means discoverable mode, rather than assuming that ordinary power-on mode is sufficient.
  3. Open the source device’s available-device list. The list may be called Available devices, Add device, Pair new device, or Pair remote or accessory.
  4. Select the headset’s displayed name. Check the name carefully if several nearby Bluetooth devices are visible.
  5. Approve the request. Tap, click, or select Pair, Connect, or the equivalent confirmation. If a PIN is requested, use the code specified by the headset manual; do not guess a code when the manual provides one.
  6. Test the active connection. Play a known audio source. If sound remains on the built-in speakers, open the source’s audio-output controls and select the headset. A successful pairing record alone does not prove that the headset is the current output.

Pair with an Android phone

Google’s standard Android route

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  2. Touch and hold Bluetooth to open Bluetooth settings.
  3. Tap Pair new device. On some Android versions, the available-device list is shown immediately or includes a Refresh option.
  4. Put the headphones or earbuds into their model-specific pairing mode.
  5. Tap the headset when its name appears, then follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. Play audio and check the output selector if the phone continues using its speaker.

Android keeps previously paired accessories saved until you explicitly unpair them. A saved name may therefore appear even when the headset is powered off, out of range, or connected to another device.

Samsung Galaxy phones

  1. Open Settings > Connections > Bluetooth.
  2. Put the headset into pairing mode before searching. Samsung notes that a Galaxy phone cannot detect a device that is not discoverable.
  3. Select the headset under the available-device list.
  4. Tap Pair and accept any confirmation.
  5. Start playback and verify that the headset is the selected audio output.

Samsung’s menu names and screens can vary by Galaxy model and software version. Galaxy Buds generations also use different case or touch-control actions, so use the instructions for the exact earbuds instead of applying one Buds gesture to every model.

iPhone and other phones

On an iPhone, open the Bluetooth controls in Settings, turn Bluetooth on, put the headset into its discoverable mode, and tap its name when it appears. Approve the pairing prompt, then choose the headset from the phone’s audio-output control if playback does not switch automatically. iOS labels can change between versions, and headset controls remain model-specific; if the name never appears, return to the headset manual and repeat pairing mode rather than repeatedly tapping the phone’s Bluetooth switch.

Pair with a Windows laptop

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices, or open the taskbar’s Bluetooth quick settings.
  2. Turn Bluetooth on. If there is no Bluetooth control, confirm that the laptop has Bluetooth hardware or that its adapter and driver are installed.
  3. Put the headphones or earbuds into discoverable pairing mode.
  4. Open the Bluetooth device list from quick settings or choose the option to add a device in Settings.
  5. Select the headset and follow any pairing prompt.
  6. Play sound and, if necessary, select the headset from Windows’ output-device chooser.

Microsoft notes that discoverability is controlled by the headset, not by a Windows setting. When Bluetooth is enabled and the headset is in range, a previously paired device can normally reconnect automatically.

  3. Put the headset into pairing mode, select its name, and accept the prompt.
  4. Check Windows’ sound-output selector if audio still comes from the laptop speakers.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The menu path above is the documented Windows 10 route, but an unsupported operating system may not receive current fixes or interface changes; upgrading the laptop or using a supported system is the safer long-term option.

Pair with a TV

Check compatibility before troubleshooting

Television Bluetooth support is model-specific. A TV may use Bluetooth for a remote or keyboard without supporting Bluetooth audio output. Sony states that direct Bluetooth-audio connection is limited to Google TV and Android TV models that support the A2DP profile. Do not assume that every smart TV, or every TV from one manufacturer, can send program audio to headphones.

Google TV

  1. Open the profile icon on the TV home screen.
  2. Go to Settings > Remote & Accessories > Pair remote or accessory.
  3. Put the headphones or earbuds into pairing mode near the TV.
  4. Select the headset when Google TV finds it.
  5. Accept the pairing request and play a program to check that sound is routed to the headset.

Google TV can remember several Bluetooth accessories, but only one Bluetooth audio device can be connected at a time. If the headset is already saved but inactive, reconnect it through Settings > Remote & Accessories > Accessories > [the device] > Connect. The saved entry and the current connection are separate states.

Sony Google TV or Android TV menus

Sony’s menu wording varies with the TV’s Android version. One documented route is Settings > Remotes and accessories > Pair accessory. On some menu versions, use Remotes & Accessories > Bluetooth settings > Add device.

  1. Open the applicable remotes-and-accessories menu.
  2. Choose the option to pair or add a Bluetooth accessory.
  3. Put the headset into pairing mode and keep it close to the TV.
  4. Select it when detected and approve the request.
  5. Play program audio and confirm that it reaches the headphones.

Sony’s illustrated instructions are for an Android 10 TV and warn that menus differ by Android OS. That page also states that its illustrated TV permits one Bluetooth device at a time; treat that as a model-specific limit, not a promise about every Sony television.

Reconnect, forget, and switch between devices

Reconnect a saved headset

Open the source device’s paired-accessory list and choose Connect. Google TV exposes this as Settings > Remote & Accessories > Accessories > [device] > Connect. On phones and computers, selecting the saved headset normally performs the same action. If the headset is connected to another source, disconnect it there first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start a clean re-pair

  1. In the source device’s Bluetooth list, choose the headset and select Forget, Remove, or Unpair.
  2. Turn Bluetooth off and back on at the source.
  3. Restart the headphones or earbuds.
  4. Put the headset back into its model-specific pairing mode.
  5. Search again and select the headset as a new accessory.

Removing a saved record is useful when the source remembers an obsolete connection, but it does not replace the headset’s own reset procedure. If the manufacturer manual says a full headset reset is required, follow that procedure only after preserving any settings you need.

Troubleshoot the failure you actually see

The headset does not appear in the list

  • Confirm that the headset is in pairing mode, not merely powered on. Samsung specifically identifies non-discoverable mode as a reason a Galaxy phone cannot find a device.
  • Move it close to the source and keep other already-paired devices from connecting first.
  • Close and reopen the source’s Bluetooth screen or use its Refresh control if available.
  • Check the exact model manual for the pairing button, case action, or touch gesture.
  • Restart both devices and repeat the search.

A previously paired headset will not reconnect

  • Check whether it is currently connected to a different phone, laptop, or TV.
  • Use the source’s Connect command instead of starting playback and waiting for an automatic switch.
  • If that fails, forget or unpair the saved record, re-enter pairing mode, and pair again.
  • On Google TV, disconnect unused Bluetooth accessories before retrying.

The TV finds the headset but refuses to connect

  1. Disconnect Bluetooth accessories that the TV is not using.
  2. Restart the headphones.
  3. Power-cycle Google TV by turning the TV off for 10 seconds before trying again.
  4. Forget the old TV entry on the headset or TV if the relevant menu provides that option, then pair again.
  5. Test the headset with a phone or tablet. If it works there, the problem is more likely the TV’s compatibility, profile support, or current accessory connection.

Pairing succeeds but there is no sound

  • Play a known audio source rather than relying on a paused or muted app.
  • Open the phone, Windows, or TV output selector and choose the headset explicitly.
  • Check the headset’s own volume and mute controls.
  • On a TV, verify that the model supports Bluetooth audio rather than only Bluetooth remotes or input devices.
  • Disconnect another active audio device; Google TV and the Sony illustrated TV allow only one connected Bluetooth audio device at a time.

The headset disconnects repeatedly

  • Keep the headset close to the source while testing.
  • Charge both devices.
  • Stop another nearby device from automatically reconnecting to the headset.
  • Forget the saved connection and perform a clean re-pair.
  • For a TV, confirm the exact model’s supported Bluetooth-audio profile before treating the behavior as a pairing error.

Which pairing path should you use?

Target device Primary menu or action Important limitation How reconnection works
Most Android phones Touch and hold Bluetooth > Pair new device Labels and Refresh controls vary by Android version and hardware. Previously paired devices stay saved until unpaired.
Samsung Galaxy Settings > Connections > Bluetooth The headset must be in pairing mode; Galaxy and Buds menus vary by model and software. Select the saved accessory again or pair it after removing the old record.
iPhone Settings > Bluetooth, then tap the headset Exact labels can change with iOS; headset pairing controls remain model-specific. Use the saved-device entry or forget and pair again.
Windows 11 Settings > Bluetooth & devices or Bluetooth quick settings The laptop needs Bluetooth hardware or a suitable adapter. Devices generally reconnect automatically when Bluetooth is on and the headset is in range.
Windows 10 Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. Select the saved headset or remove it and add it again.
Google TV Settings > Remote & Accessories > Pair remote or accessory Several accessories may be paired, but only one Bluetooth audio device can be connected at once. Settings > Remote & Accessories > Accessories > device > Connect.
Compatible Sony Google TV or Android TV Settings > Remotes and accessories > Pair accessory, or Bluetooth settings > Add device Bluetooth audio requires a supported model and A2DP; menus vary by Android OS. Use the TV’s saved accessory entry, or remove and pair again.

A final pairing checklist

  • The source device has Bluetooth support and Bluetooth is on.
  • The headset is discoverable in the exact pairing mode specified for its model.
  • The headset name is selected from the source’s available-device list.
  • Any Pair or Connect prompt has been accepted.
  • The headset is not still connected to another source.
  • The source’s audio-output control points to the headset.
  • A TV has been checked for model-specific Bluetooth-audio and A2DP support.
  • For a failed reconnect, the saved record has been removed and a fresh pairing has been attempted.
