To pair the Bose SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen), turn it on, hold the Bluetooth button until it says “Ready to connect” and the Bluetooth light slowly blinks blue, then choose the speaker in your phone or computer’s Bluetooth settings. The Bose app offers an alternative setup route. The detailed steps below cover iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, reconnection, two-device use, and the common Windows 10 duplicate-entry problem.
Before you start
These instructions apply to the Bose SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen), the model Bose’s support documentation identifies as sold from 2024. Keep the speaker powered on and place it near the phone or laptop during setup. Bluetooth menus vary by operating-system version and manufacturer, so the wording on your screen may differ slightly from the examples below.
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the phone or computer.
- Keep the speaker within normal Bluetooth range while pairing.
- If the speaker has been connected to another source, pause that source or temporarily turn its Bluetooth off if the new device cannot find the speaker.
- For the most reliable first attempt, use the speaker’s physical Bluetooth control rather than searching before pairing mode is active.
Bose’s model-specific procedure is documented in its Bluetooth connection support article and the SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen owner’s guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePut the SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen into pairing mode
- Press the speaker’s power button to turn it on.
- Press and hold the Bluetooth button. Do not release it after a quick press; keep holding until the speaker announces “Ready to connect.”
- Check the Bluetooth indicator. A slowly blinking blue light means the speaker is ready to be discovered.
If the light is not slowly blinking blue, the speaker is not in the state needed for a new pairing. Hold the Bluetooth button again until the voice prompt and blue indicator appear before opening the device list on your phone or computer.

- STEREO ON THE GO: Amp up the adventure with more sound when you link two compatible Bose speakers, choose Stereo Mode for left and right channels, or go for Party Mode for even bigger, bolder sound
A short press and a press-and-hold have different purposes here. A quick press can work with remembered connections, while holding the button puts the speaker into the discoverable state needed for a new phone or laptop. The voice prompt is the clearest confirmation that the hold lasted long enough.
Pair with an iPhone
Use iPhone Bluetooth settings
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on if it is off.
- Wait under Other Devices for the Bose speaker to appear.
- Tap the speaker’s name. If you renamed it in the Bose app, the custom name may be shown; otherwise, select its default Bose name.
- Wait for the connection sound and for the speaker’s Bluetooth indicator to stop indicating that it is searching.
The iPhone should then route compatible audio to the speaker. If the name does not appear, leave the Bluetooth screen open, confirm that the speaker is still blinking blue, and repeat the Bluetooth-button hold rather than repeatedly tapping an old listing.
If an old entry is listed but does not connect, first put the speaker back into pairing mode and select the current entry when it appears. Selecting a saved entry is appropriate for a known device, but a first-time connection requires the speaker to be discoverable.
Pair from the Bose app
Bose also documents an app-based route. Open the Bose app, choose Connect, select Source, and tap the plus sign beside Add new. When the app sends you to the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings, select the SoundLink Flex there. This route is useful when the speaker is already registered in the app or when you want to manage its source and multipoint settings after pairing.
The app does not replace the phone’s Bluetooth connection. It guides you to the same system device list, where you finish by selecting the speaker. If the app cannot find it, use the physical button to restore the slowly blinking blue pairing indicator, then return to the app’s Add new flow.
Pair with an Android phone
Standard Bluetooth pairing
- Turn on the speaker and hold its Bluetooth button until “Ready to connect” plays and the indicator slowly blinks blue.
- Open Bluetooth from Android’s Quick Settings, or open Settings > Connections > Bluetooth. Android manufacturers can use different labels; use the current Bluetooth device screen on your phone if the path differs.
- Turn Bluetooth on and wait for available devices to populate.
- Tap the Bose speaker in the list. Its displayed name can be the default name or a name assigned in the Bose app.
- Accept any pairing prompt and wait for the connected status or the speaker’s connection sound.
Android’s settings layout is not identical across phones. The essential actions are always the same: open the phone’s Bluetooth device list, make the speaker discoverable with the physical Bluetooth button, and select the speaker entry.
Android Fast Pair
The owner’s guide lists Android Fast Pair as another supported option. On a compatible Android phone with Bluetooth enabled, bring the phone near a speaker in pairing mode and follow the on-screen Fast Pair card if one appears. If no card appears, use the standard Bluetooth-settings procedure above; the ordinary device list does not depend on Fast Pair being available.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fast Pair is an optional convenience, not a requirement for setup. The same speaker can be paired manually from the Bluetooth device list when the card is unavailable or dismissed.
Pair with a Windows laptop
Windows 11 and current Windows interfaces
- Turn on the SoundLink Flex and hold the Bluetooth button until the blue light slowly blinks and the speaker says it is ready to connect.
- Open Windows Bluetooth settings. You can use Settings > Bluetooth & devices, then turn Bluetooth on and choose Add device, or open the Bluetooth controls from the taskbar and select the option to add a device.
- Choose Bluetooth in the device-type list.
- Select the Bose speaker when it appears among nearby devices.
- Wait for Windows to report that the device is connected. Start audio and verify that the speaker is the selected output if sound continues through the laptop speakers.
Microsoft changes labels between Windows releases, so do not treat a particular button name as universal. Look for the current Bluetooth device list and the command to add a Bluetooth device.

Pairing and audio-output selection are separate Windows actions. A successful Bluetooth connection does not always change the active playback device, so use the taskbar sound control or Windows sound settings to select the SoundLink Flex if the laptop speakers remain active.
Windows 10: choose the audio entry, not LE
On Windows 10, the SoundLink Flex can appear twice. Bose says to select the listing with a headphones or speaker icon. Do not choose the entry marked LE; that is not the audio device entry intended for normal speaker playback.
- Open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices and turn Bluetooth on.
- Choose Add Bluetooth or other device, then select Bluetooth.
- When both Bose entries appear, choose the one displaying the headphones or speaker icon.
- Wait for Windows to show the device as connected, then select it as the output device from the taskbar sound control if necessary.
If you previously selected the LE entry, disconnect it and pair again using the headphones/speaker listing. Bose’s audio troubleshooting guidance covers this duplicate-entry behavior in its no-audio support article.
The duplicate names do not mean that you need two speakers or an extra accessory. They are two Bluetooth listings presented by Windows; only the headphones/speaker listing is the normal audio path for playback.
Pair with a Mac laptop
- Turn on the speaker and hold its Bluetooth button until the indicator slowly blinks blue and the “Ready to connect” prompt plays.
- Open the Mac’s Bluetooth settings from System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
- Find the Bose speaker in the nearby-device list and click Connect.
- After macOS reports the speaker connected, play a test sound.
- If audio still comes from the Mac, open the Mac’s sound settings and choose the Bose speaker for sound output. Bose notes that selecting the speaker in input/output sound settings may be necessary after Bluetooth pairing.
macOS menu names depend on the installed version. The reliable sequence is Bluetooth settings first, followed by the separate sound-output selector if the connection succeeds but playback uses the wrong device.
When troubleshooting a Mac, check both the output and input sections if an app is using the wrong audio route. The key requirement for ordinary music playback is selecting the SoundLink Flex as the output after it appears connected.

How the speaker remembers devices
The SoundLink Flex 2nd Gen can store up to six paired devices. Stored pairing information lets you reconnect without repeating the complete first-time process.
Reconnect from the phone or laptop
- Turn on the speaker.
- Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Select the remembered Bose speaker entry and choose Connect if it is not already connected.
This is usually the quickest method when you are returning to a phone or computer that has connected before. You do not need to hold the Bluetooth button for every reconnection unless you are trying to add a new device or need to cycle through stored connections.
Cycle through remembered devices from the speaker
With the speaker powered on, press the Bluetooth button to cycle through stored connections. Voice prompts need to be enabled if you want to hear the names of remembered devices while cycling. Stop when the speaker identifies the source you want, then confirm playback on that device.

Cycling is useful when the phone or laptop is not currently showing the speaker as connected. It does not erase the stored list; it moves through the devices the speaker already remembers. If you need a completely new pairing, return to the press-and-hold procedure so the blue light blinks slowly.
Use two connected devices with multipoint
The speaker can maintain active Bluetooth connections to two source devices at once, but it plays audio from only one source at a time. For example, a phone and laptop can remain connected while you work, but they do not mix their audio streams.
Switch playback from one source to the other
- Pause audio on the device currently playing.
- Start playback on the second connected device.
- If the second device does not take over, open its Bluetooth settings and confirm that the SoundLink Flex is connected, then try playback again.
Pausing the first source matters because the speaker cannot combine both streams. If the first device continues playing silently in the background, stop or pause that app before starting audio on the second device.
Manage multipoint in the Bose app
The Bose app lets you manage or disable the multipoint setting. Disabling multipoint disconnects the second connected device. Leave multipoint enabled when you regularly move between two sources; disable it when automatic source switching causes confusion or when you want only one active connection.
Disabling multipoint is a connection setting, not a factory reset and not a deletion of every stored pairing. The second active source is disconnected, while the speaker can still retain paired devices for later reconnection.

What to do when pairing fails
The speaker does not appear in the device list
- Hold the Bluetooth button again until the speaker says “Ready to connect” and the light slowly blinks blue.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on in the phone or laptop, then reopen the nearby-device list.
- Move the source device closer and pause or disconnect another device that may be using the speaker.
- If the speaker was paired previously, select its saved entry in Bluetooth settings or cycle through remembered devices with the speaker’s Bluetooth button.
Do not rely on an old listing alone when the speaker is meant to pair with a new source. The blue discovery light and “Ready to connect” prompt confirm that the speaker is advertising itself for that new connection.
It appears connected, but there is no sound
- On a Mac, open sound input/output settings and explicitly choose the Bose speaker.
- On Windows, select the speaker from the taskbar sound-output control after pairing.
- On Windows 10, disconnect any LE entry and pair with the headphones/speaker icon entry instead.
- Check that the playing app is not muted and that its output has not been assigned to another device.
- If the problem occurs in only one app, Bose suggests updating system software and trying a different app to determine whether the issue is app-specific.
This separates a Bluetooth pairing problem from an audio-routing problem. If the operating system says connected but a different app plays normally, the connection is working and the affected app’s output selection or software needs attention.
A different device keeps taking the connection
Because the speaker remembers several devices and can actively connect to two, an older source may reconnect unexpectedly. Pause audio on that source, disconnect it from its Bluetooth settings, or temporarily turn off its Bluetooth while pairing the device you want. You can then reconnect the older source later from its saved Bluetooth entry.
For a predictable one-device setup, turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones or computers that you do not want involved during pairing. Once the desired device is connected, those other devices can be turned back on and managed through their saved entries.

The connection drops during setup
- Restart the pairing sequence by turning the speaker on and holding the Bluetooth button until the blue discovery light returns.
- Keep the laptop or phone near the speaker while the initial connection is negotiated.
- Install available operating-system updates. Bose includes current software as part of its audio troubleshooting recommendations.
- Try another audio app. If another app works, the original app’s output selection or software is the likely cause rather than the Bluetooth pairing itself.
If the issue is limited to one app, switching apps is a useful diagnostic step. If every app fails, repeat the pairing process and verify the operating system has selected the SoundLink Flex as the output.
First-time pairing versus reconnecting
| Situation | Speaker action | Source-device action | Expected result |
|---|---|---|---|
| First connection | Hold Bluetooth until “Ready to connect” and a slowly blinking blue light appear. | Open Bluetooth settings and select the Bose speaker. | The device is added and connected. |
| Returning to a known phone or laptop | Turn on the speaker; use the Bluetooth button only if you need to cycle remembered devices. | Select the saved Bose entry and tap or click Connect. | The previous pairing is reused. |
| Two sources already connected | Leave multipoint active. | Pause source one and start playback on source two. | Audio switches to the source that begins playback. |
| Windows 10 duplicate entries | Place the speaker in pairing mode if pairing again. | Choose the headphones/speaker icon entry, not the LE entry. | Windows uses the normal audio connection. |
Limits and settings worth remembering
- Stored devices: up to six paired devices can remain in the speaker’s remembered list.
- Active connections: up to two source devices can be connected at the same time.
- Playback: only one connected source supplies audio at any moment.
- Voice prompts: they must be enabled to hear stored device names while cycling through remembered connections.
- Multipoint control: the Bose app can manage or disable it; disabling it disconnects the second active source.

Do I have to use the Bose app?
No. You can pair directly from iPhone, Android, Windows, or Mac Bluetooth settings. The app is an alternative route and provides controls for source management and multipoint.
What does “Ready to connect” mean?
It is the speaker’s voice confirmation that the Bluetooth button was held long enough to enter pairing mode. The slowly blinking blue indicator provides the visual confirmation.
Recommended Free Tools
Why can I see the speaker but cannot hear anything?
The operating system may have connected the speaker without selecting it as the playback output. Choose the SoundLink Flex in Windows’ taskbar sound control or Mac sound settings. On Windows 10, make sure you selected the headphones/speaker icon listing rather than the LE listing.
Can my phone and laptop stay connected together?
Yes. The speaker supports active connections to two source devices. It still plays only one source at a time, so pause the first device before starting audio on the second.
How many devices can the speaker remember?
It can store up to six paired devices. You can reconnect a remembered phone or computer from that device’s Bluetooth settings, or press the Bluetooth button to cycle through stored connections.
Why does the speaker reconnect to the wrong device?
An older paired device may be reconnecting automatically, especially with multipoint enabled. Pause or disconnect that source, or temporarily turn off its Bluetooth while pairing the device you want.
