Use the instructions for the exact Ultimate 2 model you own. 8BitDo sells an Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller and a separate Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller. The Bluetooth model uses the controller’s BT mode and the Switch pairing menu. The Wireless model uses its included 2.4G receiver and has different radio instructions.
For the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller, set the switch to BT, press Home, hold Pair for three seconds, and then choose Controllers > Change Grip/Order on the console. Its listed firmware version was v2.01 on 8BitDo’s support page checked October 13, 2026; that release specifically improves Switch 2 wake-up stability and motion-control sensitivity in Switch mode. Check 8BitDo’s current listing again immediately before updating because firmware availability can change.
First identify your Ultimate 2 model
Do not begin with a generic “Ultimate 2” guide. The two products use different connection methods, and the Bluetooth pairing sequence does not apply to the Wireless Controller’s 2.4G receiver.

| Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller | Included 2.4G receiver | Separate receiver and receiver-re-pairing instructions in its manual |
Read the full model name on the controller, packaging, or the device name shown by 8BitDo’s software. A receiver in the box is a strong indication that you have the Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller, but confirm the printed model name rather than relying only on appearance. If the controller has a mode switch, check its labels before following any steps.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This identification step matters during both pairing and updating. A similar shell, button layout, or product name does not mean that firmware is interchangeable. If the updater identifies a different Ultimate 2 model, stop and resolve the mismatch before accepting an update.
What Switch 2 compatibility means
The Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller manual describes its Switch procedure as a general Switch pairing workflow and lists a minimum Switch system requirement of version 3.0.0. The manual does not provide a separate, Switch 2-specific menu sequence. 8BitDo’s firmware notes nevertheless document Switch 2 support and improvements for the Bluetooth model.
Firmware v2.01 is listed as optimizing “controller wake-up stability for Switch 2” and “motion control sensitivity in Switch mode.” Earlier entries also mention Switch 2 support and shake-to-wake support. These notes establish firmware-level improvements; they do not prove that every Ultimate 2 variant, hardware feature, or software behavior is identical on Switch 2.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Consequently, use the documented Switch menu path below on Switch 2, but treat the controller model and its recognized firmware as decisive. If a feature or pairing behavior differs, do not substitute the Wireless Controller’s receiver procedure for the Bluetooth model’s BT procedure.
What you need before starting
- The exact model name, confirmed on the controller, packaging, or in 8BitDo software.
- A Switch 2 and a controller with enough power to remain on while pairing or updating.
- For the Bluetooth model, access to the controller’s BT position and the Pair button.
- For firmware work, a Windows 10-or-later or macOS 10.13-or-later computer for 8BitDo’s listed desktop updater, or a compatible installation of Ultimate Software V2.
- An internet connection if the updater needs to download firmware automatically.
The updater and Ultimate Software V2 are official software routes and do not add a separate software charge in the reviewed instructions. No additional physical accessory is established as necessary for the documented Bluetooth pairing procedure. The Wireless Controller is different because its normal connection depends on the included 2.4G receiver.
Pair the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller with Switch 2
These are the pairing steps documented in the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller manual. The status LED gives you the two important confirmations: rapid blinking means pairing mode, and a solid light means the connection completed.
- Set the mode switch to BT. The Bluetooth pairing procedure will not work while the controller is set to another mode.
- Press Home. This powers on the controller.
- Hold Pair for three seconds. Keep the button pressed for the full three seconds. The status LED should begin blinking rapidly, indicating pairing mode.
- Open the controller-order screen on Switch 2. From the console’s Home menu, select Controllers, then Change Grip/Order.
- Wait for the connection. When the controller connects, its status LED should remain solid. The controller is ready when the console shows it in the grip/order screen.
The manual names this menu sequence for Switch generally rather than labeling it as a unique Switch 2 workflow. The current firmware notes confirm Switch 2 support and improvements, but the reviewed official material does not establish a different Switch 2 menu path.

If the LED never blinks rapidly
- Confirm the mode switch is physically at BT, not a receiver or other position.
- Press Home once, then hold Pair for three seconds again. A brief press is not the documented pairing command.
- Make sure you are following the Bluetooth Controller instructions, not the Wireless Controller manual.
- Check that the controller is powered on and that you are holding the actual Pair button rather than another control.
If the LED blinks but the console does not connect
- Leave the controller in pairing mode while you open Controllers > Change Grip/Order.
- Check the controller’s firmware with the official updater or Ultimate Software V2 before trying repeatedly.
- If the controller is recognized as a different model, stop and use that model’s manual; firmware and radio procedures are model-specific.
- After updating, run the complete BT, Home, three-second Pair, and Change Grip/Order sequence again rather than assuming the old pairing attempt was retained.
Check and update the controller firmware
8BitDo provides two official software routes: its firmware updater and Ultimate Software V2. Both are preferable to selecting a firmware file by name because the software can identify the connected controller and display the firmware intended for it.
Use 8BitDo’s firmware updater
The updater page describes automatic controller recognition and internet firmware downloads. It also provides an advanced mode for manual updating. The listed desktop downloads support Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.13 or later.
- On a compatible Windows or macOS computer, install and open 8BitDo’s official firmware updater.
- Connect the controller as directed by the updater and wait for automatic device recognition. Do not choose a similarly named model from a list unless the tool identifies your actual controller.
- Read the displayed model and current firmware version. For the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller, the support listing checked October 13, 2026 showed v2.01; the listing may change after that date.
- If an update is offered, start it from the updater and follow every on-screen instruction until completion. Keep the controller connected and do not close the application during the update.
- When the tool reports completion, recheck the displayed version. Then retry the Switch 2 pairing procedure with the controller in BT mode.
Automatic recognition is the safer route because it reduces the chance of applying a package intended for the other Ultimate 2. Advanced mode is intended for manual updating when automatic recognition or download does not provide the required path. Use only a firmware package that the updater identifies for the exact controller model. A file for the Wireless Controller is not an interchangeable update for the Bluetooth Controller.
Use Ultimate Software V2
8BitDo’s Ultimate Software V2 page states that firmware is added to the software when available. The Ultimate 2 product information also places firmware updating alongside configuration features such as profiles, stick and trigger settings, vibration, RGB, motion controls, and macros.
- Install and open Ultimate Software V2 on a supported computer.
- Connect the controller and wait for the software to recognize it.
- Confirm the recognized model and inspect the firmware information shown for that device.
- Apply an offered firmware update only when it is associated with the recognized model, then follow the software’s prompts through completion.
- Afterward, verify the version in the software and pair through Controllers > Change Grip/Order on Switch 2.
The software can also expose configuration controls, but changing profiles, stick settings, trigger settings, vibration, RGB, motion controls, or macros is separate from proving that the radio connection works. First complete recognition and firmware installation; configure those options afterward.
If the software does not recognize the controller, resolve recognition first rather than forcing a manual file update. A missing update offer can mean that the installed version is current, that firmware has not yet been added to that software path, or that the connected device is not the model you expected. Check the model name shown by the tool and 8BitDo’s live support listing before making another attempt.
Firmware details and supported features
| Item | What is established | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller firmware listing | Version v2.01 was shown on 8BitDo’s support page on October 13, 2026 | Check the live listing or software again before updating; the version is not permanent |
| Switch 2 wake behavior | v2.01 changelog: optimized controller wake-up stability for Switch 2 | Updating is particularly relevant if waking the console or controller is unreliable |
| Motion controls | v2.01 changelog: optimized motion-control sensitivity in Switch mode | Update before judging motion-control behavior on Switch 2 |
| Earlier Switch 2 notes | Earlier listed notes add Switch 2 support and shake-to-wake support | Older firmware may not provide the same Switch 2 behavior |
| Switch system requirement | The Bluetooth manual lists Switch system version 3.0.0 or above | Keep the console software within the documented requirement |
| Unsupported functions listed by the manual | NFC scanning, IR camera, HD rumble, and the notification LED | Do not infer that a Switch 2 firmware note automatically adds these features |
The manual predates the Switch 2-specific firmware improvements. Its unsupported-feature list therefore remains an explicit limitation in the reviewed material. The changelog’s wake and motion statements should not be read as a promise that NFC, the IR camera, HD rumble, or the notification LED has been added.
Firmware listings are volatile. Treat v2.01 as the version shown on the October 13, 2026 check, not as a permanent guarantee. Confirm the current support page or the version displayed by the recognized-device software immediately before updating and again after completion.

Ultimate 2 Bluetooth versus Ultimate 2 Wireless
| Comparison point | Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller | Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller |
|---|---|---|
| Primary connection described here | Bluetooth in BT mode | Included 2.4G receiver |
| Switch pairing sequence covered by the manual | Home, hold Pair for three seconds, then Controllers > Change Grip/Order | Receiver and receiver-re-pairing instructions in its own manual |
| Firmware note specifically cited | v2.01 includes Switch 2 wake and motion-control changes | Use the updater or Ultimate Software V2 only after it identifies this model |
| Can you swap the directions? | No; do not use receiver instructions for BT pairing | No; do not assume the BT three-second Pair sequence replaces the receiver procedure |
This is a connection-method comparison, not a claim that one controller is better. The available manuals and support notes do not establish identical Switch 2 features across both products. Select the exact model in any product listing or support link, and use that model’s manual.
Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller: use the receiver procedure instead
The Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller is a separate product. Its manual describes an included 2.4G receiver and a receiver re-pairing procedure, rather than the Bluetooth model’s BT-mode instructions.
- Do not set expectations that the Bluetooth Controller’s three-second Pair-button sequence will pair the Wireless Controller directly to Switch 2.
- Use the receiver supplied with the Wireless Controller and follow that model’s manual for connection and receiver re-pairing.
- When updating, allow the official updater or Ultimate Software V2 to identify the Wireless Controller before accepting firmware.
- If the software displays the Bluetooth Controller’s name while your receiver-based controller is connected, stop and correct the connection or device selection.
The reviewed official material does not provide a universal, shared pairing procedure for every Ultimate 2 variant. The model name and the device recognized by 8BitDo’s software are the safest authority.

Troubleshoot pairing and updating in the right order
1. Confirm the model before changing settings
Most setup errors begin with mixing the two manuals. Check whether the product is labeled Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller or Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller. Bluetooth instructions require BT mode; receiver instructions require the included 2.4G hardware.
2. Confirm the controller’s mode
For the Bluetooth model, move the switch to BT before pressing Home. If the switch is not in BT, repeat the entire documented sequence after correcting it.
3. Confirm pairing-mode evidence
Hold Pair for three seconds and look for rapid status-LED blinking. If the LED is not rapidly blinking, the controller is not presenting the documented Bluetooth pairing state.
4. Use the exact console menu
On Switch 2, open Controllers, then Change Grip/Order. The official material reviewed does not identify a different Switch 2 menu route, so avoid inventing one or moving to unrelated Bluetooth settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute5. Update before diagnosing persistent behavior
Check the recognized firmware in the official updater or Ultimate Software V2. For the Bluetooth model, compare it with the current support listing; v2.01 was the listed version on October 13, 2026. Firmware updates include Switch 2 wake and motion-control changes that can affect symptoms which look like pairing failures.

6. Stop when recognition is wrong
If the updater identifies another model, or cannot identify the controller, do not select a similarly named firmware package. Correct the connection and recognition problem, then let the tool show the model-specific update.
7. Separate unsupported features from faults
NFC scanning, the IR camera, HD rumble, and the notification LED are listed as unsupported in the Bluetooth manual. Their absence is not evidence that pairing or firmware installation failed.
8. Recheck after every firmware change
Read the version after the updater reports completion, then perform a fresh BT pairing attempt. This separates an update problem from a console-menu or model-selection problem and gives the status LED a clear test: rapid blinking during pairing, solid after connection.

Is an extra adapter required to pair the Bluetooth model?
No extra physical accessory is established as necessary for the documented Bluetooth procedure. The Wireless Controller is the exception in this comparison because its manual describes an included 2.4G receiver.
Why do NFC, IR, HD rumble, or the notification LED not work?
The Bluetooth manual lists NFC scanning, the IR camera, HD rumble, and the notification LED as unsupported. A Switch 2 firmware note does not establish that those functions were added.
What if Ultimate Software V2 does not recognize my controller?
Do not force a similarly named firmware file. Correct the connection, verify whether the device is the Bluetooth or Wireless model, and use the updater’s displayed model as the authority before trying again.
Before you finish: a model-specific checklist
- The controller name has been verified as either Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller or Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller.
- Bluetooth-model users have set the switch to BT.
- Home was pressed, Pair was held for three seconds, and rapid LED blinking appeared.
- Switch 2 pairing was started from Controllers > Change Grip/Order.
- A solid status LED confirmed the Bluetooth connection.
- The official updater or Ultimate Software V2 recognized the exact controller model.
- The firmware version was checked against 8BitDo’s current support listing before updating.
- No firmware file intended for another Ultimate 2 variant was selected.
- Unsupported features listed in the manual were not treated as update failures.
For the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller, the reliable sequence is therefore: identify the model, update through an official recognized-device tool, select BT, hold Pair for three seconds, and use the Switch 2 controller-order screen. For the Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller, keep the 2.4G receiver and its separate manual in control of the setup.
