To connect SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds to an Xbox console, use the Arctis GameBuds for Xbox package, move the included 2.4 GHz dongle’s switch to Xbox, and plug the dongle into the console. The earbuds and dongle are paired before delivery, so they should connect without a manual pairing routine. If they do not, use the green-LED re-pair procedure described below.

Confirm that you have the Xbox version

SteelSeries sells separate Xbox and PlayStation versions under the GameBuds name. The Xbox model is the one designed for this console connection: its dual-mode wireless dongle has an Xbox position and a PlayStation/PC (PC) position. SteelSeries describes the PlayStation model as intended for PlayStation and PC, so do not assume that a package marked “GameBuds” will work with an Xbox. Check the product label, box, or order record before troubleshooting.

Model Dongle platform mode relevant to the product Use for an Xbox console
Arctis GameBuds for Xbox Xbox and PC positions on the dual-mode dongle Yes; set the switch to Xbox
Arctis GameBuds for PlayStation PlayStation and PC design Not the Xbox-specific model

SteelSeries explains the model distinction in its support article, What is the difference between Gamebuds for Xbox and Gamebuds for PlayStation? The platform marking matters more than the shared “GameBuds” name. When shopping, verify the full platform name rather than relying on a product photo or a listing title that only says “Arctis GameBuds.”

The distinction is about the platform mode built into the supplied dongle, not simply a different label for the same Xbox setup. SteelSeries describes the Xbox version as having Xbox and PlayStation/PC modes, while its PlayStation version is designed for PlayStation and PC. For this guide, the practical test is straightforward: you need the Xbox package and its dongle set to Xbox. Do not expect selecting PC mode on the PlayStation version, or substituting a generic wireless adapter, to turn it into the Xbox model.

What you need before connecting

Use the complete Xbox kit if possible. The official product information guide lists these parts:

  • Left and right earbuds
  • Charging case
  • USB-C-to-USB-C charging cable
  • USB-C wireless dongle with a physical wireless-mode switch
  • USB-C-female-to-USB-A-male adapter cable
  • Small, medium, and large eartips

The dongle provides the console’s 2.4 GHz wireless link. The adapter is useful when the console connection you need is USB-A: connect the USB-C dongle to the adapter, then plug the adapter’s USB-A end into the console. The manual lists Xbox as a supported system and identifies the Xbox switch position. See the complete guide at SteelSeries’ Arctis GameBuds for Xbox Product Information Guide.

For the normal setup, the essential items are the Xbox-version earbuds, their included dongle, and an available compatible USB connection on the console. Use the supplied adapter when the console port you are using is USB-A rather than USB-C. The adapter changes the connector path; it does not replace the dongle or alter its wireless mode. If you have the complete kit, you should not need to buy a separate adapter just to make that USB-A connection.

  • Charge the case and earbuds enough to power them on.
  • Keep both earbuds in the case until the dongle is connected.
  • Have the console accessible so you can see the dongle’s indicator and reach its pairing button if recovery is needed.

You do not need to begin by searching for the buds in a console Bluetooth menu. The setup described here uses the included 2.4 GHz dongle, and the earbuds and dongle are paired before delivery. Keep the supplied parts together: the kit’s dongle is the intended link between these earbuds and the console.

Normal Xbox setup: connect the already-paired earbuds

Most owners only need the following sequence. It uses the factory pairing between the earbuds and the included dongle; there is no ordinary Xbox Bluetooth menu step in this procedure.

  1. Identify the Xbox package. Confirm that the earbuds and dongle came from the Arctis GameBuds for Xbox kit, not the PlayStation version.
  2. Set the dongle mode. On the dongle, move the physical wireless-mode switch to Xbox. The manual says to use PC mode for other supported devices, so PC is not the correct position for this console setup.
  3. Choose the USB connection. If the console accepts the dongle’s USB-C plug directly, insert it. If you need USB-A, attach the supplied USB-C-female-to-USB-A-male adapter cable to the dongle and plug the adapter into the console.
  4. Wake the earbuds. Remove them from the charging case and put them in your ears, or leave them ready to use after the console recognizes the dongle. The included buds and dongle were paired before shipping.
  5. Wait for the wireless link. Give the console and dongle a moment to establish the 2.4 GHz connection. Do not start a manual pairing sequence unless the normal connection fails.

SteelSeries’ support instructions state that the GameBuds and their dongle come paired. That is why an Xbox does not normally require you to search for the earbuds or enter a code. The support article is How do I pair my Arctis GameBuds with the 2.4 GHz dongle?

In other words, “pairing” for a first setup usually means connecting the dongle in the right mode and using the buds, not running the recovery sequence. Keep the mode switch at Xbox while the dongle is attached to the console. If the console connection is made through USB-A, the adapter belongs between the dongle and the console; do not leave the dongle disconnected while trying to establish the wireless link.

How the Xbox connection works

The earbuds communicate with the supplied dongle over a 2.4 GHz wireless link. The dongle, rather than a generic Bluetooth discovery process, is the component that presents the headset connection to the console. Its physical switch determines which platform mode the dual-mode hardware uses. In the Xbox position, it is configured for the Xbox-specific connection; in PC mode, it is intended for other supported devices.

This design explains three otherwise confusing points:

  • The dongle must be connected. The earbuds are not being added through an Xbox “pair new device” screen in the normal procedure.
  • The switch position is functional, not cosmetic. A dongle left in PC mode can prevent the Xbox setup from working even when the earbuds are charged.
  • The supplied dongle matters. The pre-paired earbuds are intended to work with the included GameBuds dongle; buying an arbitrary replacement dongle is not an established way to add Xbox compatibility.

This also separates two different tasks that can sound similar. The usual task is to connect the already-paired set to the console: select Xbox mode and attach the dongle. Re-pairing is a recovery task that links the earbuds and dongle again if the normal connection does not return. The latter uses the earbud buttons, LED indications, and dongle pairing button; it is not a menu-based console search.

If the earbuds do not connect

Work through the simple causes before re-pairing. Manual pairing is a recovery step, not a requirement for every first-time setup. Checking the product variant, mode switch, USB connection, and battery state first prevents an unnecessary button sequence when the problem is simply an incorrect setting or an unseated connector.

1. Recheck the model and switch

Look for the Xbox designation on the package or product information. Then physically move the dongle switch to Xbox. If it is in PC mode, change it and reconnect the dongle so the console sees the correct platform mode. Do not use the shared GameBuds name as proof that the package is the Xbox version.

2. Check the USB path

Push the dongle firmly into the console’s port. If you are using USB-A, verify that the supplied USB-C-female-to-USB-A-male adapter is fully seated on the dongle and in the console. Try the console’s other compatible USB port if one is available. This check distinguishes a wireless problem from a loose or incorrect physical connection.

Also confirm that the dongle itself is the part plugged into the adapter. The adapter is a connector converter, not a separate wireless receiver. If the USB-C plug fits the console directly, the adapter is not required for that connection.

3. Give the earbuds power

Return both earbuds to the charging case and make sure they are seated on their charging contacts. If the case or earbuds are depleted, charge them with the included USB-C-to-USB-C cable before attempting the connection again. Remove both earbuds together after charging rather than testing with only one bud.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Restart the connection cleanly

With the earbuds in the case, disconnect and reconnect the dongle in the correct Xbox mode. Then remove the earbuds and allow the already-paired set a moment to reconnect. If the link still fails, proceed to the re-pair sequence instead of repeatedly changing unrelated console settings.

If you are uncertain whether the issue is a failed pairing or a physical connection, check in this order: verify the Xbox model, verify the Xbox switch position, reseat the dongle or adapter, and confirm the earbuds have power. Only move to re-pairing after those basic checks. The supplied documentation does not require changing additional Xbox settings as part of the normal connection process.

Re-pair the GameBuds and dongle

Use this procedure when the factory pairing is lost or the normal Xbox connection does not recover. The LED colors are important: blue indicates the initial pairing mode, and green indicates the 2.4 GHz mode used to pair with the dongle.

  1. Put both earbuds in the charging case. Keep them together in the case while starting the sequence.
  2. Enter the first pairing mode. Hold the button on either earbud for three seconds, until the earbud LEDs blink blue.
  3. Switch to 2.4 GHz pairing mode. Press and hold an earbud button again for one second. The LEDs should change to blinking green, which indicates 2.4 GHz pairing mode.
  4. Connect the dongle. Plug the dongle into the Xbox console, using the supplied USB-A adapter when the physical port requires it. Keep its wireless-mode switch set to Xbox.
  5. Start dongle pairing. Press and hold the dongle’s pairing button for three seconds.
  6. Wait for completion. Keep the earbuds and dongle close together while the link is established. When pairing finishes, remove the earbuds and test game audio and chat.

SteelSeries documents the same sequence in its official manual and support article. If the LEDs do not reach the green state, repeat the button timing carefully: the second hold is one second, after the initial three-second hold, not another three-second hold. The steps are ordered: first the blue indication, then green 2.4 GHz mode, then the three-second hold on the dongle’s pairing button. Starting with the dongle button or skipping the green state does not follow the documented recovery sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the two earbuds in the case as the procedure begins, and use either earbud button for the stated holds. The important confirmation is the change to blinking green before you initiate dongle pairing. If you see blue but not green, repeat the second one-second hold accurately. If the earbuds reach green, continue by connecting the dongle and holding its button for three seconds.

Common mistakes and the corresponding fix

Symptom Likely cause What to do
No connection after plugging in the dongle Wrong GameBuds variant or dongle still in PC mode Confirm the Xbox model and move the switch to Xbox.
Dongle does not fit the console’s port USB-C dongle needs a USB-A connection Use the supplied USB-C-female-to-USB-A-male adapter cable.
Only one earbud appears to work Earbuds were not brought out or charged together Seat both buds in the case, charge if necessary, then remove them together.
Repeated normal reconnect attempts fail Factory pairing may have been lost Run the blue-to-green 2.4 GHz re-pair process and hold the dongle button for three seconds.
Pairing sequence never reaches green LEDs Button timing or starting state is incorrect Put both buds in the case and repeat: three-second hold for blue, then one-second hold for green.
A replacement dongle will not add Xbox support Not every wireless dongle is compatible or pre-paired Use the dongle supplied with the Xbox kit; do not treat a generic replacement as an Xbox upgrade.
Connection still fails through USB-A Adapter or plug may not be fully seated Reseat the adapter and dongle, or use another compatible console port if available.

These checks address the likely setup errors without implying that every failure has the same cause. A wrong model or mode is a compatibility issue; a loose adapter is a physical connection issue; uncharged buds are a power issue; and the documented re-pairing sequence addresses a lost earbud-to-dongle pairing.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Using the adapter without introducing another pairing step

The USB-C-female-to-USB-A-male cable changes only the physical connector. It does not change the wireless mode or create a second pairing relationship. Attach the adapter to the USB-C wireless dongle, leave the dongle’s switch on Xbox, and connect the adapter to the console. If you later move the dongle to another supported device, the manual’s PC position is the relevant alternative; switch it back to Xbox before returning to the console.

The included adapter is useful only when needed for the available port. If the console accepts the dongle’s USB-C plug directly, use that connection. If you use the adapter, keep the USB-C dongle attached to its female end and plug the adapter’s USB-A end into the console. In either case, the wireless mode remains selected on the dongle, and the earbuds still use the same pre-paired 2.4 GHz link.

What to check when shopping for or replacing a set

Choose the platform-specific package

Look specifically for Arctis GameBuds for Xbox. The Xbox product page is SteelSeries’ Arctis GameBuds for Xbox listing. A listing that names only “Arctis GameBuds” without identifying the platform should be verified before purchase, because the PlayStation and Xbox packages use different platform modes.

Before ordering, check that the product description identifies the Xbox variant rather than assuming that an image of the earbuds or a generic GameBuds title covers both versions. The directly relevant product is the Xbox package with its Xbox-mode dongle. The included accessory list also matters: the kit’s USB-C-to-USB-A adapter is the intended option when you need a USB-A connection.

Do not plan around a generic dongle

The earbuds’ normal out-of-box behavior depends on the included, pre-paired dongle. The available documentation does not establish that an unrelated replacement dongle can be paired to create Xbox compatibility. If the original dongle is missing, check with SteelSeries for an approved replacement that is specifically compatible with the Xbox variant rather than assuming any USB wireless adapter will work.

Keep the adapter with the kit

The included adapter is part of the intended connection path for consoles that require USB-A. Losing it can make a correctly paired dongle appear unusable simply because the connector cannot reach the console port. If your console accepts USB-C, you can connect the dongle directly; otherwise, keep the supplied adapter with the dongle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official materials identify the product and kit contents but do not provide a price comparison here. There is no basis for assuming a separate adapter purchase is required when you have the complete Xbox package, or for treating a generic dongle as a lower-cost substitute for the Xbox-specific hardware.

A concise decision path

For a first setup, follow this order:

  1. Verify the package is the Xbox variant.
  2. Set the dongle switch to Xbox.
  3. Connect the dongle directly by USB-C or through the supplied USB-A adapter.
  4. Remove both charged earbuds from the case and wait for the pre-paired link.
  5. If there is still no connection, reseat the USB path and charge the buds.
  6. Only then perform the three-second blue, one-second green, three-second dongle-button re-pair sequence.

This order avoids unnecessary manual pairing and isolates the three variables that matter most: the correct model, the correct dongle mode, and a sound USB connection. For most first-time setups, the first four steps are all that is needed; reserve the button sequence for a connection problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to manually pair Arctis GameBuds with an Xbox the first time?

Usually not. SteelSeries says the earbuds and included dongle come paired. Set the dongle switch to Xbox, connect it to the console by USB-C or with the supplied USB-A adapter, and use the earbuds. Re-pair only if that normal link fails.

Can I connect the GameBuds through the Xbox Bluetooth pairing menu?

The normal procedure in SteelSeries’ instructions uses the included 2.4 GHz dongle, not a console Bluetooth discovery step. Connect the dongle and set its physical switch to Xbox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will the PlayStation version of Arctis GameBuds work with an Xbox?

SteelSeries identifies separate Xbox and PlayStation versions. The Xbox version has an Xbox dongle mode; the PlayStation version is described as designed for PlayStation and PC. Choose the Xbox-specific package for this setup.

What does the USB-C-to-USB-A adapter do?

It lets you connect the USB-C dongle to a USB-A port: attach the dongle to the adapter’s USB-C-female end and plug the adapter’s USB-A end into the console. It changes the connector, not the wireless mode or pairing.

What do the blue and green LEDs mean during re-pairing?

In the documented recovery sequence, a three-second hold on either earbud button while both buds are in the case brings up blinking blue. A further one-second hold changes the LEDs to blinking green, indicating 2.4 GHz pairing mode. Then connect the dongle and hold its pairing button for three seconds.

Do I need to buy a separate adapter or replacement dongle?

The Xbox kit lists a USB-C-female-to-USB-A-male adapter cable, so a complete kit includes the adapter for a USB-A connection. The documentation does not establish that a generic replacement dongle will provide Xbox compatibility. If the original dongle is missing, ask SteelSeries about a replacement specifically approved for the Xbox variant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For the normal connection, use the Arctis GameBuds for Xbox, set the supplied dongle to Xbox, and connect it directly or through the included USB-A adapter. The buds and dongle arrive paired, so manual re-pairing is only a recovery step: three seconds for blue, one second for green, then three seconds on the dongle pairing button.
