To pair Sony wireless earbuds, charge the earbuds and case, place the earbuds in Bluetooth pairing mode, then select their model name in your phone’s Bluetooth settings. Android uses its Bluetooth or device-connection screen; iPhone uses Settings > Bluetooth. If the earbuds were connected to another phone, disconnect that phone first so it cannot capture the connection.

Before pairing: prepare the earbuds and phone

A few checks prevent most failed pairing attempts:

  • Charge both earbuds and the charging case. Keep the earbuds close to the phone while pairing.
  • Disconnect the previous phone. Turn Bluetooth off on a nearby phone that has used the earbuds, or remove its active connection. Otherwise, that phone may connect first.
  • Know which pairing gesture your model uses. Sony WF and LinkBuds models do not all enter pairing mode the same way. Many truly wireless models enter pairing mode automatically when removed from the case during first setup, or after initialization. Pairing a second device may require a model-specific button or touch-control action described in that model’s Sony Help Guide.
  • Work within the pairing window. Sony says pairing mode is canceled if pairing is not completed within five minutes. If that happens, put the earbuds back into pairing mode and start the phone search again.

How to pair Sony earbuds with an Android phone

  1. Put the earbuds into pairing mode. For many Sony truly wireless models, open the case and remove both earbuds for first pairing. If they have already been paired before, or you are adding a second phone, use the button or touch control specified for your model in the Sony Help Guide.
  2. Open Android’s connection settings. Go to Settings, then open the screen labeled Bluetooth, Connected devices, or Device connection. Android manufacturers use different labels and menu layouts.
  3. Turn Bluetooth on if it is off. Remain on the Bluetooth device list while the phone scans for nearby devices.
  4. Select the Sony model name under available, new, or saved devices. The name may identify the model family, such as a WF or LinkBuds model.
  5. Accept the pairing request. If Android asks you to confirm pairing, tap the confirmation option. Wait until the device is shown as connected rather than merely listed as available.
  6. Test playback. Start audio and check that sound is routed to the earbuds. If the earbuds appear in the list but do not connect, follow the recovery steps below instead of repeatedly tapping the same entry.

After the first successful pairing, Android normally stores the earbuds as a saved Bluetooth device. Future connections may occur automatically when the earbuds are removed from the case, but another nearby phone can still take the connection if it is already active.

How to pair Sony earbuds with an iPhone

  1. Enter pairing mode on the earbuds. Remove the earbuds from the case for first pairing on models that start pairing automatically. For a previously paired set or a second device, use the model-specific button or touch-control procedure in the Sony Help Guide.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth on and leave the Bluetooth page open so the iPhone can discover nearby devices.
  3. Tap the Sony model when it appears under available devices.
  4. Confirm any prompt. Wait for the model name to move into the connected-device area before playing audio.
  5. Play a short test clip. If the model appears but refuses to connect, forget its old record and pair it again using the troubleshooting sequence below.

If a different iPhone or phone has used the earbuds recently, turn Bluetooth off on that device before starting. This prevents the old device from reconnecting during the iPhone’s scan.

How Sony pairing mode differs by model

There is no universal Sony button-hold duration or single gesture that applies to every wireless earbud. Pairing behavior varies across WF and LinkBuds models, especially when adding a second device.

Situation What commonly happens What to do
First pairing Many truly wireless models begin pairing automatically when removed from the charging case. Remove the earbuds, then select them in the phone’s Bluetooth list.
Pairing after initialization Initialization deletes stored Bluetooth pairing information and returns the earbuds to factory settings. After initialization, treat the earbuds as a new device and use the normal pairing procedure.
Adding a second phone The earbuds may not enter pairing mode automatically. Use the exact button or touch-control action in the model’s Sony Help Guide.
Previously connected phone nearby The old phone may reconnect before the new phone finishes pairing. Turn Bluetooth off on the old phone or disconnect the earbuds there first.
Multipoint-capable setup Existing connections can affect which phone receives audio or whether a new phone can connect. Temporarily disconnect other devices while establishing the new pairing.

The charging case, earbud battery state, and the model’s support in Sony Help Guide and Sound Connect can also affect the exact recovery path. Do not substitute instructions from a different WF or LinkBuds model.

What to do when Sony earbuds do not appear in Bluetooth

Work through these steps in order. Stop when the earbuds pair successfully.

1. Confirm that the earbuds and case have power

Charge the earbuds in the case and charge the case itself, then retry pairing. Sony’s WF-1000XM5 troubleshooting guidance specifically says to charge before retrying when the case or an earbud is at 1% or lower. That 1% threshold is stated for the WF-1000XM5 guidance; it should not be treated as a universal battery specification for every Sony model.

2. Make sure pairing mode is actually active

Return the earbuds to the case once, close or leave the case as the model requires, and remove them again. Sony documents this case-insertion and removal step in its Sound Connect troubleshooting flow as a way to restart the earbuds. If the earbuds were already paired to another phone, disable Bluetooth on that phone before repeating the scan. Remember that pairing mode expires after five minutes if setup is not completed.

3. Restart the phone

Restart the Android phone or iPhone, then place the earbuds back into pairing mode and run a fresh Bluetooth search. Sony’s troubleshooting sequence includes restarting the playback device because a phone’s Bluetooth service can retain a failed or stale connection state.

4. Delete the old Bluetooth record and pair again

A saved record can prevent a clean setup, especially after a phone replacement or an interrupted pairing attempt.

  • Android: Open Settings > Device connection, choose the saved Sony device, tap its Settings icon, select Forget, and confirm with Forget Device. Menu labels can differ on other Android versions, but the objective is to remove the saved Bluetooth entry.
  • iPhone: Open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information icon next to the Sony device, choose Forget This Device, and confirm. Then return the earbuds to pairing mode and select them as a new device.

5. Try a different phone or Bluetooth device

Pair the earbuds with another Bluetooth phone or compatible device. If they pair there, Sony’s troubleshooting guidance indicates that the original playback device may be the cause. Remove the old record, restart that phone, and try again. If the earbuds fail to pair with every device, continue to initialization only if the model’s instructions support it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Initialize the earbuds only when necessary

Initialization is more disruptive than forgetting a phone entry. Sony states that initialization returns the earbuds to factory settings and deletes all Bluetooth pairing information. You will need to pair every phone again afterward. Follow the exact initialization procedure for your model rather than applying a gesture from another Sony earbud.

7. Decide whether service is needed

If the earbuds still fail to pair with multiple devices after initialization, Sony’s troubleshooting flow indicates that repair may be required. Keep the model name and the results of the alternate-device test available when contacting support.

Pairing, reconnecting, and switching phones

Pairing creates a Bluetooth relationship and stores the device in the phone’s list. Reconnecting uses that saved relationship after the earbuds and phone have already been paired. A phone can therefore show the Sony model as saved even when the earbuds are not currently connected.

Switching phones is different from ordinary reconnection. If the old phone remains nearby with Bluetooth enabled, it may reconnect first. Turn Bluetooth off on that phone while pairing the new one, then restore it later if you want to use both devices. Whether the earbuds can maintain connections to more than one device at once depends on the specific model and its multipoint support; do not assume every WF or LinkBuds product behaves identically.

Fast diagnosis by symptom

Symptom Most useful next action Why it helps
No Sony name appears Charge the earbuds and case, insert and remove the earbuds once, then re-enter pairing mode. The earbuds may be off, outside pairing mode, or already connected elsewhere.
The name appears but will not connect Forget the saved record on the phone, restart the phone, and pair again. This clears a stale Bluetooth relationship.
The old phone connects instead Turn Bluetooth off on the old phone before scanning with the new phone. The old device is claiming the active connection.
Pairing worked once, then stopped Put the earbuds in the case and remove them again, then retry within the five-minute pairing window. This restarts the earbuds’ discovery state.
Pairing fails on one phone but works on another Restart the failing phone and delete its saved Bluetooth record. The original playback device may be responsible.
Pairing fails everywhere Use the model-specific initialization procedure; if failure continues, seek repair. Persistent failure after initialization points beyond a single phone’s saved settings.

How to avoid common pairing mistakes

  • Do not wait longer than five minutes after entering pairing mode; restart the process if the window expires.
  • Do not use a button-hold instruction copied from another Sony model. Check the Help Guide for the exact WF or LinkBuds model.
  • Do not initialize first. Forget the phone’s old Bluetooth record and restart the phone before deleting all pairing information from the earbuds.
  • When testing a new phone, isolate the earbuds from previously paired phones by disabling Bluetooth on those phones.
  • When reporting a problem, note whether the earbuds appear in the Bluetooth list, whether another device can pair, and whether initialization changed the result. Those distinctions separate a phone-side problem from an earbud-side problem.

When to use Sony’s model-specific instructions

Use the Sony Help Guide whenever you need the exact control gesture for pairing a second device, resetting the earbuds, or initializing them. Use the Sound Connect troubleshooting flow for its documented restart, forget-device, and case-removal sequence. These instructions are model-sensitive, so the model name printed in the phone’s Bluetooth list or on the case should match the guide you follow.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my Sony earbuds not showing up on Android?

They may not be in pairing mode, may have connected to another nearby phone, or may lack sufficient charge. Charge them, turn Bluetooth off on the previous phone, insert and remove the earbuds once, and search again from Android’s Bluetooth or device-connection screen.

How do I connect Sony earbuds to an iPhone after they were paired before?

Turn off Bluetooth on the old phone, open Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone, and select the Sony model. If it does not connect, use the information icon to choose Forget This Device, then put the earbuds into pairing mode and pair them again.

Do all Sony earbuds use the same pairing button?

No. WF and LinkBuds models can use different buttons or touch controls, particularly for adding a second device. Follow the instructions for the exact model in its Sony Help Guide.

Will initializing delete my existing pairings?

Yes. Sony says initialization returns the earbuds to factory settings and deletes all Bluetooth pairing information, so every phone must be paired again.
