To pair Sony noise-canceling headphones, put the exact model into Bluetooth pairing mode, open Bluetooth settings on the phone, laptop, or tablet, and select the headphones’ full model name. Repeat those steps for each source. Pairing saves the devices’ information; it does not mean all of them stay connected simultaneously. Unless your particular model supports multipoint, the headphones normally maintain one active Bluetooth connection at a time. Sony describes pairing as a prerequisite for connection in its Bluetooth Pairing and Connection guidance.
The button sequence for entering pairing mode, multipoint availability, and app controls vary by model. Use the model-specific Sony help page for that first step, then follow the platform instructions below. The Sony app is optional for ordinary Bluetooth pairing; it is needed only for model-dependent features such as some multipoint controls.
What you need before pairing
- The exact headphone model: Find the model designation on the headband, inside the app, on the box, or in the existing Bluetooth entry. WH-1000XM4, WH-1000XM5, and WH-1000XM6 are different models with different feature support.
- Enough battery: Charge the headphones so they do not shut down during setup.
- Bluetooth enabled on the source: Turn on Bluetooth on the phone, tablet, or computer. A computer without working Bluetooth cannot complete wireless pairing until its Bluetooth hardware or adapter is working.
- The model’s pairing instructions: Sony does not use one universal button sequence. Open the support page for your precise model and follow its timing, indicator-light, and voice-prompt instructions.
On many Sony wireless models, pairing mode is entered by holding the power or Bluetooth control while the headphones are off until a light or voice prompt indicates pairing. Treat that as a general description, not a guaranteed sequence: verify the control and hold time for your model before proceeding.

Pairing and connecting are different
Pairing is the initial exchange and storage of Bluetooth identification information. After a successful pairing, the source usually keeps a record of the headphones, so you do not have to repeat the procedure every time. A new pairing is normally needed only when you add a new source, delete the saved record, initialize the headphones, or otherwise lose the stored information.

A connection is the active Bluetooth link carrying music, notification sounds, or calls. Selecting a saved headphone entry in Bluetooth settings asks the source to create that active link. Sony summarizes the relationship in its support article: “Pairing is a requirement before the devices can connect.” See Sony’s Bluetooth Pairing and Connection explanation.
Pair Sony headphones with a phone
1. Enter pairing mode on the headphones
- Turn the headphones on or off as required by the exact model’s Sony instructions.
- Hold the specified power or Bluetooth control for the required duration. Wait for the pairing voice prompt or flashing indicator.
- Keep the headphones close to the phone and do not start pairing from a second source at the same time.
2. Choose the headphones in the phone’s Bluetooth list
- Open the phone’s Settings and then Bluetooth (the wording can differ between iOS, Android, and software versions).
- Make sure Bluetooth is on and wait for newly discovered devices.
- Select the headphones’ complete model name, such as WH-1000XM4, rather than an entry beginning with LE_ when both appear. Sony specifically uses WH-1000XM4 versus LE_WH-1000XM4 as an example and notes that the correct model can take time to appear; see Sony’s multipoint and connection guide.
- Accept a pairing request or passcode if the phone displays one. Wait for the status to change to connected.
Play a short audio clip to confirm the phone is using the headphones. If music still comes from the handset, open the phone’s audio-output picker and choose the Sony headphones; the Bluetooth record can be saved even when audio is routed elsewhere.
Pair Sony headphones with a tablet
A tablet follows the same Bluetooth process as a phone, whether it runs iPadOS, Android, or another supported operating system.

- Put the headphones into model-specific pairing mode.
- Open the tablet’s Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
- Tap the headphones’ actual model name in the discovered-device list, not an LE-prefixed listing when Sony presents both.
- Approve the pairing prompt and wait for the connected state.
- Start playback and select the headphones in the tablet’s audio-output controls if the tablet continues using its speakers.
Pairing the tablet creates another saved pairing record. It does not automatically disconnect or erase the phone’s record. The headphones may still connect to only one of those sources at a time unless the model supports multipoint.
Pair Sony headphones with a laptop
Windows laptop
- Enter pairing mode on the headphones using the instructions for the exact model.
- Open Settings and the Bluetooth section (often shown as Bluetooth & devices), then turn Bluetooth on.
- Choose Add device, select Bluetooth, and click the headphones’ full model name when it appears.
- Wait for Windows to report that the device is connected. If Windows asks which services to use, allow audio.
- Open the speaker or sound-output control and select the Sony headphones as the output device.
Windows can list more than one audio profile. For ordinary music, choose the stereo or headphones playback profile. For a call or video meeting, choose the hands-free headset profile when available; Sony distinguishes the stereo playback and hands-free profiles in its computer example at its multipoint guide.
Mac laptop
- Put the headphones into pairing mode.
- Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS) and select Bluetooth.
- Find the headphones’ model name and select Connect.
- Open the Mac’s sound controls and set the headphones as the output. Select the headphones as the input only when you need their microphone for a call.
Menu names vary by macOS release, but the essential sequence is always pairing mode, Bluetooth device selection, then audio-output selection.

What happens when you pair all three devices?
The headphones can remember pairings with a phone, laptop, and tablet, but a saved list is not the same as three live links. With ordinary single-device Bluetooth, disconnect or pause the current source, then select the headphones in another source’s Bluetooth list to move the active connection. You generally do not need to delete the original pairing first.

Using multipoint: two devices at once
Multipoint is a model-specific feature, not a capability shared by every Sony noise-canceling headphone. Sony’s general guide describes a maximum of two simultaneously connected devices and illustrates the procedure with WH-1000XM4. The guide says its steps are generally similar across models, but you must confirm support for your exact model before relying on the feature: Connect the headphones to two devices simultaneously (multipoint connection).
Typical phone-and-computer setup
- Pair the headphones with the phone and the computer separately. Complete each pairing before attempting multipoint.
- Install and open Sony’s companion app on the phone if your model uses the app for multipoint settings.
- In the app, enable Connect to 2 devices simultaneously (the exact wording can vary by model or app version).
- Use the app’s device-selection screen to choose the other paired source, such as the computer.
- Confirm that both sources show as connected. Start audio on only one source at first, then test switching.
On a multipoint connection, the headphones can remain linked to both devices, but audio still comes from the source that is playing or selected. Pause playback on the first device before starting the second when the switch does not occur automatically. A phone call can also take priority over computer or tablet media, depending on the source and operating system.

WH-1000XM5 app limitation
Sony’s WH-1000XM5 support page identifies Sony | Sound Connect as a smartphone app and states that there is no PC app. It lists the two-device setting among functions that can carry over when the headphones are used with a computer. Configure that feature from the smartphone app, not by looking for a Windows or macOS version. See Sony | Sound Connect support information. Sony also provides a model-specific WH-1000XM5 multipoint video at its support page.
When multipoint controls are missing
If the app has no two-device option, do not infer that the headphones are defective. Check the precise model’s specifications and support documentation. Some Sony models support multipoint while others do not, and app features can differ by model, firmware, phone operating system, or region. Pairing several sources remains possible even when simultaneous connections are not.

Fix pairing and connection problems
The headphones do not appear
- Repeat the exact model’s pairing-mode procedure, including the required button timing and confirmation light or voice prompt.
- Check that the headphones are not still actively connected to another source. Temporarily turn Bluetooth off on that source or disconnect the headphones there.
- Keep the headphones near the source and wait for the discovery list to refresh.
- Select the full model name. When Sony displays both a standard entry and an LE-prefixed entry, its guidance directs you to the actual model entry, such as WH-1000XM4 rather than LE_WH-1000XM4.
The device is listed but will not connect
- Tap or click the saved headphone entry in the source’s Bluetooth settings to request a new active connection.
- If that fails, disconnect the headphones from other nearby sources and try again.
- Delete the saved headphone record only if necessary, then put the headphones back into pairing mode and pair them again. Deleting a record means that source will need a complete pairing procedure next time.
The second multipoint source has no sound
- Pause or stop playback on the first source. Sony notes that switching sources can require stopping playback on the first device.
- Start playback on the intended second source.
- Check that the second source still shows the headphones as connected and that its audio-output picker is set to the headphones.
- If the problem persists, disconnect one source, test single-device playback, and then re-enable multipoint from the companion app.
The laptop says connected but audio comes from its speakers
Bluetooth connection status does not guarantee that the computer selected the headphones for output. Open the computer’s sound settings and choose the Sony headphones as the speaker or output device. For meetings, select the hands-free headset profile when you need microphone input; switch back to the stereo profile for music when your operating system offers both.

A call sounds poor or music quality changes
Hands-free call profiles use the headphone microphone and are managed differently from stereo playback profiles. Select the profile appropriate to the task in the calling app and operating system. This is an audio-routing choice, not a new pairing.
The app cannot find the headphones
Basic Bluetooth pairing does not require Sony’s app. If the headphones pair directly but the app cannot manage them, confirm that you installed the app intended for that model, Bluetooth is enabled, and the headphones are connected to the phone running the app. Multipoint controls may be unavailable on models that do not support the feature.
How to switch, remove, or rebuild pairings
Switch to a paired source without multipoint
- Pause media and disconnect the headphones from the currently active source.
- On the target phone, tablet, or laptop, open Bluetooth settings.
- Select the saved Sony headphone entry and wait for the connected status.
- Choose the headphones in the target device’s audio-output controls.
Remove one source
Use the source device’s Bluetooth settings and choose Forget, Remove, or Unpair for the Sony headphones. The exact label depends on the operating system. This removes that source’s saved record; it does not remove the pairing records stored on every other source.

First remove the headphone entry from the problem source, disconnect nearby sources, and repeat the model-specific pairing procedure. If the headphones were initialized, all stored pairing information may be erased, so every source will need to be paired again. Use the model’s Sony support instructions for initialization; do not assume a reset combination from another WH-series generation.
