To pair most button-controlled Shokz headphones, start with the headphones powered off, then hold volume+ for 5–7 seconds. Keep holding until the LED flashes red and blue and the voice prompt says “pairing.” Open Bluetooth settings on your phone, tablet, Mac, or PC and select the Shokz device. If it was paired with another device, forget the old entry there before trying again.

The exact buttons vary by model family. The procedure below applies to OpenRun and similar button-controlled models; case-based Shokz earbuds use their own case and touch-control instructions. Identify the model first, then follow the matching recovery steps.

Identify your Shokz model before troubleshooting

Shokz products do not all use the same controls. OpenRun, OpenMove, Aeropex, Air, Titanium, and related open-ear headsets use physical buttons and generally follow the volume+ pairing and three-button reset sequence. Earbuds that charge in a case may enter pairing mode from the case or through touch controls instead.

Model family Typical controls Pairing guidance Reset guidance in this article
OpenRun and similar button-controlled headsets Multifunction, volume+, and volume− buttons Power off, then hold volume+ for 5–7 seconds Three-button reset for 3–5 seconds
OpenMove, Aeropex, Air, Titanium and related button models Physical buttons Usually the same volume+ pairing behavior; confirm your model’s manual Three-button sequence is generally applicable
Case-based Shokz earbuds Charging case and touch or model-specific controls Use the case or touch-control pairing procedure for that model Do not apply the button-headset sequence unless the manual specifies it

When a step does not match the buttons on your headset, stop and look up the exact model’s instructions rather than repeatedly trying a different combination. A wrong sequence can leave the headset powered on without putting it into pairing mode.

How to pair OpenRun and other button-controlled Shokz headphones

  1. Power the headphones off. Pairing mode is different from ordinary power-on. Begin with no audio playing and the headset switched off.
  2. Hold volume+ for 5–7 seconds. The headset powers on while you continue holding the button. Keep holding until the LED flashes red and blue and the voice prompt says “pairing.” Shokz’s OpenRun troubleshooting guidance specifically says to begin powered off and hold volume+ for 5–7 seconds.
  3. Open Bluetooth settings on the host device. On a phone or tablet, open the Bluetooth page in Settings. On macOS, open System Settings and Bluetooth. On Windows, open Settings, then Bluetooth & devices.
  4. Select the Shokz device name. Tap or click the entry that matches your headset. Wait for the status to change to connected before starting music or a call.
  5. Test audio and the microphone. Play a short track, raise both volume controls, and make a brief test call if you need the microphone.

If the headset was previously used with another phone, tablet, Mac, or PC, remove or forget its Shokz Bluetooth entry on those devices before retrying. An old device that is nearby can capture the reconnection and make the new device appear unable to pair.

Pairing details that prevent false failures

Keep the headset close to the host while you perform the first pairing. Do not start from the ordinary power-on sound and assume the headset is discoverable; the red-and-blue flashing LED and spoken “pairing” prompt are the confirmation that it is advertising itself. If the device list is open before pairing mode begins, wait a moment or refresh the list after the prompt.

Pair one host at a time during diagnosis. Turn Bluetooth off temporarily on nearby phones, tablets, and computers that have used the headset. This avoids a familiar device reconnecting in the background while you are trying to select the headset on a new host. Once the first connection is stable, you can deliberately configure a second host if your model supports multipoint.

If the Shokz device does not appear or pairing fails

Work through the following order. It clears the most common causes without changing several variables at once.

  1. Forget every old Shokz entry. On each previously connected device, open its Bluetooth device list, choose the Shokz headset, and select Forget, Remove, or Unpair. Remove duplicate entries as well.
  2. Toggle Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off on the device you are pairing, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
  3. Restart the host device. Restart the phone, tablet, Mac, or PC, not just the Bluetooth switch.
  4. Put the headset back into pairing mode. Start powered off and hold volume+ for 5–7 seconds until the red-and-blue LED and “pairing” prompt appear.
  5. Charge briefly. Connect the headset for a few minutes, then retry. A very low battery can interrupt startup or discovery.
  6. Reset the headset. Use the three-button procedure in the next section if the device still does not appear.
  7. Pair with only one host. Move other phones and computers away or temporarily disable their Bluetooth so they cannot seize the connection.

Keep the headset close to the host during setup and do not begin playback until the Bluetooth status says connected. If pairing works with a second phone but not the original device, the headset is probably functioning and the issue is more likely the original device’s Bluetooth state, permissions, or driver.

A useful test is to change only one variable at a time. First try the original host after a clean reset. Then try a different phone or computer. If the second host discovers and plays through the headset, preserve that successful pairing and concentrate on the first host rather than repeating resets indefinitely. If no host can discover it after the correct sequence and a short charge, the problem is no longer a routine pairing mistake.

  1. Power the headphones off.
  2. Enter pairing mode by holding volume+ for 5–7 seconds until the red-and-blue LED appears and the pairing prompt sounds.
  3. While in pairing mode, press and hold the multifunction button, volume+ button, and volume− button simultaneously for 3–5 seconds. Beeps or vibrations confirm the operation.
  4. Turn the headphones off.
  5. Restart the phone or computer.
  6. Return to Bluetooth settings and pair the headset as a new device.

Shokz’s OpenRun Commands page, dated November 24, 2023, gives the three-button instruction as pressing and holding the multifunction, volume+, and volume− buttons simultaneously for 3–5 seconds. Its OpenRun troubleshooting guide, dated November 2, 2021, separately emphasizes starting powered off and holding volume+ for 5–7 seconds. Those are two stages of the recovery, not interchangeable shortcuts.

The three-button command is documented by Shokz for OpenRun. If your model has different controls, confirm that the sequence applies before using it. A reset clears the headset’s connection state; it does not repair a damaged speaker, charging port, cable, or host Bluetooth radio.

Why Shokz headphones keep disconnecting

An old device is taking the connection

A headset may reconnect to a nearby phone or computer that was paired earlier. Forget the Shokz entry on every old host, then perform a clean pairing with the device you actually want to use. Leave other hosts’ Bluetooth off while testing.

Multipoint is switching between two devices

Many Shokz models support two-device connections, but the behavior depends on the headset, the host devices, and the Bluetooth transmitter. A documented case involves an Apple device dropping when another paired device is on a call. This is a host-interaction problem, not proof that the headset is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disconnect or forget the second device temporarily.
  2. Pair the headset with one device and test music and calls.
  3. If the single-device connection is stable, use the model’s documented multipoint procedure to add the second device.
  4. Repeat calls and media playback on both hosts. If drops return only during a call on one host, use single-device mode for that combination.

Multipoint is convenient, but it can introduce handoff conflicts. For important calls, a single active Bluetooth host is the more predictable setup.

Do not assume that every two-device combination behaves alike. iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS can handle call priority and media handoff differently, and the transmitter in a computer or dock can impose its own limits. Test the exact phone-and-computer combination you plan to use. A stable music connection does not by itself prove that calls will hand off cleanly.

Bluetooth radio, distance, or interference is unstable

Keep the headset near the host and test in the same room. Restart both devices and reset the headset before changing several settings. If another phone connects reliably at the same distance, focus on the first host’s Bluetooth software or hardware.

Windows pairing problems

Shokz’s troubleshooting guidance identifies outdated Bluetooth drivers as a cause of Windows pairing difficulty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates.
  2. Check the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s support page for a current Bluetooth driver that matches your Windows edition and hardware.
  3. Install the driver, restart Windows, and remove the old Shokz entry from Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  4. Put the headset into pairing mode again and select it from the Bluetooth device list.

If the built-in radio remains unreliable, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter is a reasonable category to investigate. Compatibility is not universal: the adapter, its driver, Windows version, and support for the headset’s Bluetooth features all matter. Test the headset with another computer before buying hardware so you do not mistake a headset problem for a radio problem.

Check the manufacturer’s support page rather than installing a random driver utility first. The correct driver depends on the computer’s Bluetooth chipset and Windows edition. After an update, remove the previous Shokz entry and pair again; an old saved profile can preserve the same failure even after the radio software is corrected. If a USB adapter is needed, verify that it supports the Windows version and the headset functions you need, including calls and media, not merely device discovery.

Connected but no sound

A Bluetooth connection can succeed while audio is routed incorrectly or one of the headset’s volume controls is at zero.

Check volume and output selection

  • Raise the volume on the phone or computer.
  • Raise the headphone volume with the headset’s volume buttons.
  • Choose the Shokz headset as the active playback output rather than the built-in speaker, monitor, dock, or another Bluetooth device.
  • Pause and resume playback after changing the output.

Android Bluetooth profile settings

Open the Shokz entry in Android Bluetooth settings and confirm that both Phone Calls and Media Audio are enabled. If Media Audio is disabled, calls may work while music remains silent; if Phone Calls is disabled, media may work while call audio does not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accessibility balance

Check the phone or computer’s accessibility audio balance. A balance control set completely left or right can make an open-ear headset seem silent on one side or unusable, even though Bluetooth is connected.

Use the prompt sound as a diagnostic

If voice prompts and button tones are audible but media is silent, reset the headset and pair it again. If prompt sounds remain absent even after raising volume, Shokz treats that as a possible speaker hardware defect; warranty or support review is more appropriate than repeatedly changing Bluetooth settings.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Separate the audio path from the Bluetooth link. First confirm that the operating system shows the headset as the selected output, then check the two independent volume controls. On Android, inspect both profiles even if one type of audio already works. On a computer, a monitor, dock, or conferencing application may take output focus after connection, so reselect the Shokz device and resume playback.

What to do when Shokz headphones will not charge

  1. Inspect the magnetic connector and charging contacts for dirt, moisture, or misalignment. Seat the connector gently and verify that the charging indicator responds.
  2. Try an alternate model-compatible magnetic charging cable.
  3. If the first adapter may be the problem, try a different charging adapter.
  4. Leave the headset charging for a few minutes, then retry pairing.
  5. If it still will not charge, stop forcing the connector and contact Shokz support or warranty service.

Use a cable designed for your exact Shokz model. Magnetic charging connectors are not automatically interchangeable across every family, and forcing a mismatched connector can damage the contacts. A charging failure that persists with a known-good compatible cable and adapter points toward the headset or its charging contacts rather than Bluetooth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A short charging test is enough to distinguish a depleted battery from a discovery problem; it is not a reason to leave a failed connector under pressure. Try the alternate cable and adapter separately so you know which change helped. If there is no charging indication with compatible equipment, document the model and purchase details for support instead of repeatedly bending, scraping, or forcing the magnetic connection.

Shokz App and permission issues

If you use the Shokz App, the phone must allow the permissions the app needs to discover and manage the headset. On iOS or Android, verify Bluetooth and, where requested by the operating system, Nearby Devices permission. An outdated or stuck app can remain on a searching screen even when the headset pairs normally in system Bluetooth settings.

  1. Close the app completely.
  2. Check its Bluetooth and Nearby Devices permissions in the phone’s app settings.
  3. Update the app through the device’s app store.
  4. If it still cannot find the headset, reinstall the app, then pair through system Bluetooth before reopening it.

App discovery and system Bluetooth pairing are separate checks. If the headset works for calls and media without the app, troubleshoot app permissions or installation rather than resetting the headset repeatedly.

Support can work faster when you describe the exact symptom: whether the LED reaches pairing mode, whether a second host can see the headset, whether prompt tones play, and whether charging responds with a known-good cable. Include the host platform and whether the failure affects music, calls, the microphone, or all functions. This helps distinguish a software pairing issue from a speaker, battery, cable, or radio fault.

Key points to remember

  • Pairing mode requires a powered-off button-controlled headset and a 5–7-second hold of volume+ until the red/blue LED and “pairing” prompt appear.
  • Clearing old pairings and restarting Bluetooth prevents many reconnection loops.
  • The multifunction-plus-volume+, volume− reset is the primary recovery step for OpenRun and similar button-controlled families.
  • Multipoint behavior depends on the host and transmitter; test one device before adding a second.
  • For no audio, check output, volume, Android profiles, and accessibility balance before assuming a Bluetooth failure.
  • For charging faults, try a model-compatible magnetic cable and another adapter, then stop forcing the connector and seek service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I put OpenRun into pairing mode?

Turn the headphones off. Hold volume+ for 5–7 seconds, continuing after the headset powers on, until the LED flashes red and blue and the voice prompt says “pairing.” Then select the headset in your phone or computer’s Bluetooth settings.

How do I reset OpenRun?

With the headset powered off, hold volume+ for 5–7 seconds to enter pairing mode. Then hold the multifunction button, volume+, and volume− together for 3–5 seconds until you hear beeps or feel a vibration. Turn the headset off, restart the host device, and pair again.

Why do my Shokz keep connecting to the wrong device?

A nearby phone or computer may still have a saved Shokz entry and reclaim the connection. Forget the headset on old hosts, turn their Bluetooth off while testing, and complete a clean single-device pairing before enabling multipoint.

Why is there no sound even though Shokz says connected?

Raise both host and headphone volume, select Shokz as the active output, and check Android’s Phone Calls and Media Audio switches. Also inspect accessibility balance. If voice prompts are missing too, seek support because Shokz treats that as a possible speaker hardware issue.

What should I do if my Shokz will not charge?

Gently reseat the connector, try a model-compatible magnetic charging cable and another adapter, and leave it connected for a few minutes. If charging still does not respond, stop forcing the connector and contact Shokz support or warranty service.

Do Shokz headphones support two devices at once?

Many models support multipoint, but behavior varies by model, host, and Bluetooth transmitter. Test one device first, then follow the model-specific multipoint procedure. If calls on one host cause drops, single-device mode may be more reliable.

The Bottom Line

For most button-controlled Shokz headsets, reliable pairing starts with the headset powered off and a 5–7-second volume+ hold until the red-and-blue pairing signal appears. Forget old devices, restart Bluetooth, reset with the three-button sequence when needed, and test one host before using multipoint. Check output, profiles, permissions, drivers, and charging accessories before escalating persistent hardware problems to Shokz support or warranty service.
