To pair Rust+ with a server you run, configure a reachable companion-app port in server.cfg, set the server’s public IP, restart Rust, and complete pairing from inside the game. Set app.port to a port of 10000 or higher, set app.publicip to an IP address only (never an IP-and-port combination), allow that TCP port through your firewall and router, then use Esc → Rust+ → Pair with Server. Approve the request in the Rust+ phone app.
The exact port depends on how the server is hosted. A rented host may assign an App Port in its control panel, while a home server requires you to choose a port and forward it to the machine running Rust. The server console command app.info shows the companion port that is actually active, so use it to verify your configuration instead of relying on a remembered default.
What Rust+ needs before pairing
Rust+ is the companion service that links a Rust server to the mobile app. It does not use only the normal game connection. The Rust server also starts a companion listener, and the Rust+ backend must be able to reach that listener from the public internet.
- A running, joinable Rust server: Join it once from the game client before troubleshooting the app. If the server is offline or cannot be joined normally, Rust+ pairing cannot complete.
- A companion port: The port configured by
app.portmust be 10000 or higher and reachable over TCP. - A public address:
app.publiciptells Rust+ which public IP address to use. Enter only the address, with no colon, port number, protocol, or slash. - A restart after changes: Port and IP settings are read when the server starts. Editing
server.cfgwhile the process is running does not apply those changes immediately. - A phone with Rust+ installed: The in-game request and the confirmation in the mobile app are two parts of the same pairing flow.
Rust server updates can alter menu wording. If the labels are slightly different from the ones below, look for the Rust+ option in the in-game pause menu and the command that pairs the current server.

Choose the companion port
The official default calculation
The official Rust Wiki describes the default companion port as 67 higher than the game port or 67 higher than the RCon port, using whichever resulting value is larger. With the default ports unchanged, that calculation produces 28082. Treat that number as a default calculation, not a guarantee that every installation is listening there.
The same rule applies only when you are allowing Rust to calculate the value. If you set app.port yourself, the explicitly configured value is the one that must be opened and forwarded. It still has to be at least 10000.

Hosted servers
Commercial game hosts frequently allocate a separate App Port. The panel may show it beside the game and RCon ports, and the assigned value can differ from 28082. Copy the value shown in the panel or confirm it with app.info in the server console. Do not open a familiar default port merely because it appears in an older tutorial.
Self-hosted servers
On a server in your home or office, choose an unused TCP port at or above 10000, place it in server.cfg, and forward that same port on the router to the Rust server’s internal address. The external port, the server setting, and the firewall rule must all agree. If your internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT and does not provide a routable public address, ordinary port forwarding may not be sufficient; your internet provider or network design would need to supply a reachable address.

Configure server.cfg
Set app.port and app.publicip
Open the server.cfg used by your Rust server and add or edit the companion settings. A typical configuration looks like this:
app.port 28082
app.publicip 203.0.113.25Replace 28082 with the App Port assigned by your host or the custom port you selected. Replace 203.0.113.25 with your server’s real public IPv4 address. The example address is reserved for documentation; it will not work as your server address.
Do not write app.publicip 203.0.113.25:28082, app.publicip http://203.0.113.25, or a private address such as 192.168.1.20. The setting is an IP value only. If your public address changes regularly, update the file whenever the address changes and restart the server so Rust+ receives the new value.
When to use app.listenip
Most installations do not need an additional listen-address setting. The official guidance identifies app.listenip for unusual networking arrangements. If the companion service is binding to the wrong interface, set it to the server’s public IP and then restart. Do not add it simply because pairing failed; first verify the port, public IP, and firewall path.

Confirm the port Rust is actually using
After saving server.cfg, open the Rust server console and run:
app.infoThe command reports the companion port in use. Compare that value with the App Port in your hosting panel, the number in your router rule, and the port allowed by the operating-system firewall. If app.info shows a different value from the file you edited, you may have changed the wrong configuration file, another startup argument may be overriding it, or the process has not been restarted yet.

Open and forward the TCP port
Hosted server
Hosts handle the physical router, but they may still require you to enable the App Port in a control panel or to request firewall access. Find the panel’s networking or port-allocation section, identify the assigned App Port, and make sure the Rust server process is using that same value. If the host supplies an IP separately, copy it into app.publicip without adding the port.

Home or office server
- Give the Rust machine a stable internal address, either through a DHCP reservation or a fixed address, so the forwarding rule does not point to a different device later.
- Create a router port-forwarding rule for the companion port. Select TCP, set the external and internal port to the same App Port unless your network design deliberately translates it, and target the Rust machine’s internal address.
- Add an operating-system firewall rule allowing inbound TCP traffic on that port for the Rust server process or the selected port number.
- If the server is behind more than one router, forward the port through every layer, or put the downstream router into the network arrangement recommended by your administrator.
- Check from outside the home network. Testing only from the same LAN can produce a false success because some routers do not support NAT loopback.
Only the companion TCP port needs this Rust+ exposure. Keep other administrative ports closed unless you have a separate operational reason to publish them. A forwarded port should be limited to the machine that runs Rust, not broadcast to every device on the network.
Restart the server
Stop and start the Rust server after changing app.port, app.publicip, or app.listenip. A soft reload that leaves the server process running may not recreate the companion listener. Once the server is back, run app.info again and confirm the expected port before attempting to pair.

Start in Rust
- Launch Rust and join the server normally. Wait until you can play; do not begin from a server that is still booting or rejecting game connections.
- Press Esc to open the pause menu.
- Select Rust+.
- Choose Pair with Server. The game sends a pairing request associated with the server you are currently playing on.
Approve in the mobile app
- Watch for the Rust+ push notification on the phone signed in to the account you want to use.
- Accept the request from the notification. If no notification appears, open Rust+ directly and select Pair Server when the server is listed.
- Wait for the server to appear as paired in the app, then open its controls to confirm that the connection is live.
Pairing is account- and server-specific. If you run several servers, read the server name and address shown in the request before accepting so you do not attach the phone to the wrong instance.

The server does not appear in the phone app
- Join the server in Rust first. The pairing request is initiated from an active game session, not from an offline server listing.
- Confirm that the server is fully running and joinable. A process that is still starting, restarting, or blocked by a game-side password prompt may not offer pairing.
- Run
app.infoand compare the reported port with the value opened in the host panel, router, and firewall. - Verify that the companion port is TCP and meets the 10000-or-higher requirement.
- Check
app.publicipfor a typo or an attached port number. If the public address changed, replace the old value and restart.
The “Pair with Server” option is missing
Make sure you are looking at the pause menu after joining the intended server, rather than the main menu or a server-browser screen. The option is available in the Rust+ section of an active session. If the server is not joinable, fix that game connection first. Rust updates may move or rename the menu item; use the current Rust+ pairing command in the Esc menu if the wording has changed.

The request appears, but approval fails
- Keep Rust open while accepting the request and make sure the phone is signed in to the intended Rust+ account.
- Check that the phone has internet access and that notifications are permitted for Rust+.
- Confirm the server’s public IP and active companion port again. A request can be generated even when the return path is blocked by a firewall or router.
- If you recently changed the companion port, remove the old server entry from the phone app and pair it again. This re-pairing step is reported by community users for port changes, but it is not an official requirement for every installation.
It works on the LAN but not from outside
This pattern points to the internet-facing path rather than the in-game menu. Recheck the router’s destination address, ensure the Rust machine still has the same internal IP, and confirm the operating-system firewall allows inbound TCP. Test from a cellular connection or another network, not Wi-Fi on the same router. If your provider places the connection behind carrier-grade NAT, ask whether you can obtain a public IPv4 address or use a hosting arrangement that provides one.
The app connects to the wrong server
Inspect app.publicip and the server identity shown in the Rust+ request. A stale public IP can point the app at another instance after an address change. Correct the IP, restart Rust, and initiate a fresh pairing request from the intended server.
Using containers or custom launchers
Container images and management panels can set the companion port through an environment variable instead of a hand-edited file. For the Docker image documented with a default companion port, the variable is RUST_APP_PORT; setting it overrides that image’s default. Whatever mechanism you use, verify the resulting value with app.info, publish the same TCP port in the container or host networking configuration, and forward or allow it at the outer firewall.
A common container mistake is changing the internal application port while leaving the host-side port mapping unchanged. Rust may report one value inside the container while the internet exposes another. Keep the mapping intentional, document both sides, and use the externally reachable port when checking the host firewall and router.
Operational checklist
- Server is running and you can join it in Rust.
app.portis 10000 or higher and matches the active value shown byapp.info.app.publicipcontains an IP address only.app.listenipis set only if your network layout requires an explicit listening interface.- The companion port is reachable over TCP from the internet.
- Router forwarding, host networking, and the operating-system firewall target the same Rust machine and port.
- The server was restarted after configuration changes.
- You initiated pairing from Esc → Rust+ while connected to the intended server.
- You approved the request in the Rust+ phone app.
What to expect when defaults change
The official Rust Wiki is the authority for the default port formula, while hosting panels can assign their own values. Community posts sometimes describe different formulas or report success without explicitly setting app.port; those experiences conflict with one another and should not override the official configuration or the value reported by app.info. Because Rust server builds and the 2026 Rust+ app may change labels or defaults, rely on the live console output and your host’s current panel rather than an old tutorial’s port number.
Once the companion listener is configured, publicly reachable, and restarted, the pairing itself is short: join the server, open Rust+, select the pairing command, and approve the request on the phone.
