For the heart-rate workflow documented by Apple, use Powerbeats Pro 2. Pair them in Settings > Bluetooth, turn on Heart Rate Sensor in the connected Beats settings, then start a workout in Apple Fitness or a HealthKit-enabled workout app. Grant the app permission to use heart-rate and workout data in Health when prompted.

Ordinary Bluetooth earbuds do not gain heart-rate monitoring merely by pairing with an iPhone. The earbuds must contain a compatible heart-rate sensor, and the workout app must be able to receive the readings. The steps below are specific to Powerbeats Pro 2 and the Apple health-data workflow.

What you need before pairing

Prepare the following before starting:

  • Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds and their charging case. The heart-rate instructions in Apple’s documentation apply to this model; they do not establish support for other earbud models.
  • An iPhone with Bluetooth enabled. Pairing and sensor controls are handled from iPhone settings.
  • A workout app. Apple Fitness can display the workout. A third-party app must support HealthKit and have permission to read heart-rate data and read and record workouts in Apple Health.
  • A secure ear fit and current earbud firmware. Apple recommends checking both before exercising because fit and connection affect whether a reading is available.

The earbuds send heart-rate readings to the connected iPhone or compatible equipment while you exercise. Apple says Powerbeats Pro 2 do not separately record or store the heart-rate data, so there is no earbud-only history to retrieve later.

Understand which earbuds can measure heart rate

Pairing describes a Bluetooth connection, not a health sensor. An earbud can play audio, handle calls and connect to an iPhone without measuring pulse. Do not expect the Health app to show heart rate simply because any Bluetooth earbuds are connected.

Setup Heart-rate sensor in the earbuds? What is required for workout data Where readings can appear
Powerbeats Pro 2 Yes, when the Heart Rate Sensor setting is enabled Connected iPhone and a workout app; third-party apps need HealthKit and Health permissions Workout app and Apple Health; compatible gym equipment is also supported through its sensor-selection flow
Standard Bluetooth earbuds Not established by Bluetooth pairing A separate compatible heart-rate source is needed Depends on that separate source and the app
Powerbeats Pro 2 with Apple Watch Yes, but multiple heart-rate sources may be available Wear and connect the devices as usual The system automatically selects the highest-confidence source
Powerbeats Pro 2 with a paired third-party monitor Yes, but another monitor is present Pair the monitor and use a compatible app The third-party monitor’s data is prioritized

The table does not compare sensor accuracy between products; the available Apple documentation provides no accuracy figure for this workflow.

Pair Powerbeats Pro 2 with your iPhone

  1. Open Settings on the iPhone.
  2. Tap Bluetooth and switch Bluetooth on if it is off. Leave the Bluetooth screen available while pairing.
  3. Put both earbuds in the charging case and open the case.
  4. Hold the open case next to the iPhone. Wait for the Powerbeats setup animation.
  5. Follow the on-screen setup instructions to finish pairing.

After pairing, the earbuds should be listed as connected in Bluetooth settings. If the setup animation does not appear, use manual pairing from the Bluetooth settings screen instead of waiting for the automatic card. Keep the case open and the earbuds inside while you attempt the manual connection.

If the phone does not connect

  • Confirm Bluetooth is switched on in Settings > Bluetooth, not merely in another device-control panel.
  • Keep the open case close to the iPhone and make sure the earbuds are seated in the case.
  • Check that the earbuds have charge.
  • Use the manual pairing option in Bluetooth settings when the setup animation fails to appear.
  • Once connected, verify that the device shown in the iPhone’s Bluetooth list is the Powerbeats Pro 2 rather than an older or different accessory.

These checks address pairing. A successful Bluetooth connection alone does not mean that heart-rate sensing is enabled.

Turn on the Powerbeats Pro 2 heart-rate sensor

Enable sensing after the earbuds are connected. Wear at least one earbud; the sensor control is intended to be used with a connected earbud in place.

  1. Put at least one Powerbeats Pro 2 earbud in your ear.
  2. Make sure the earbuds are connected to the iPhone.
  3. Open Settings and tap the Beats name shown near the top of the settings screen.
  4. Switch on Heart Rate Sensor.
  5. Before starting a workout, check the earbud fit and install any available earbud firmware update.

If the Beats entry is not visible near the top of Settings, reconnect the earbuds and confirm that they are the active Bluetooth audio device. The sensor switch belongs to the connected Beats settings, not to the general Bluetooth device list.

Start and record a workout

Using Apple Fitness

  1. Leave the earbuds connected and the Heart Rate Sensor switch on.
  2. Open the Fitness app on the iPhone.
  3. Choose a workout and start it.
  4. Exercise while wearing the connected earbud or earbuds. Heart-rate readings should appear in the workout view as the session progresses.
  5. End the workout using the app’s normal stop control so the session can be saved.

The exact workout categories and screen layout can vary with the iPhone software version, but the essential sequence is the same: connect the earbuds, enable the sensor, then begin the workout in Fitness.

Using a third-party workout app

A third-party app cannot receive the readings simply because it is installed. It must be HealthKit-enabled and must have the relevant Health permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the compatible workout app after enabling the sensor.
  2. Start a workout in that app.
  3. When the app requests access, allow it to read heart-rate data.
  4. Allow it to read workouts and record workouts in Apple Health when those permissions are requested.
  5. Return to the workout screen and verify that a heart-rate field appears while you exercise.

If you previously denied access, change the app’s Health permissions in the iPhone’s Health settings and then reopen the workout app. The app’s own support documentation determines where its permission controls are displayed; the required capabilities are HealthKit support plus permission to use heart-rate and workout data.

Where to find the recorded heart-rate data

In the workout app

A compatible workout app can show live heart rate during the session and include heart-rate information in the completed workout. The display depends on the app’s design and the permissions you granted.

In Apple Health

  1. Open the Health app.
  2. Tap Search.
  3. Tap Heart.
  4. Tap Heart Rate.

Apple’s guide identifies this path for reviewing heart-rate information. The workout record may also be visible through the Health app’s workout-related sections, depending on which app recorded the session.

What the earbuds do not do

Powerbeats Pro 2 do not separately record or store heart-rate data. The readings are passed to the connected iPhone or compatible equipment during use, and the workout or Health app is where the resulting information is reviewed. Removing the earbuds does not leave a hidden earbud history that can be exported later.

Fix missing, dimmed or dashed heart-rate readings

Apple identifies dashes or a dimmed heart-rate value as a poor reading. Work through the checks below in order.

  1. Check the fit. Re-seat the earbud so it is worn securely and the sensor has consistent contact. If you are using one earbud, make sure that earbud remains in place.
  2. Check the connection. Confirm that Powerbeats Pro 2 still show as connected to the iPhone and that the workout app is active.
  3. Confirm sensing is enabled. Open the connected Beats settings and verify that Heart Rate Sensor is on.
  4. Update the earbuds. Apple recommends checking firmware before a workout. An available update can address an outdated software state.
  5. Return to the workout screen. Stop and restart the workout if the app does not refresh the reading after fit and connection are corrected.

Heart-rate monitoring pauses when the earbuds are removed and resumes when they are put back in. A temporary gap after removing an earbud is therefore expected; it is not evidence that the previous workout data has been erased.

How other heart-rate sources affect the result

When an Apple Watch is also worn

If an Apple Watch is worn during the workout, Apple says the system automatically selects the highest-confidence heart-rate source. You do not manually need to choose between the watch and Powerbeats Pro 2 for every reading.

When a third-party monitor is paired

If a third-party monitor, such as a chest strap, is paired, that monitor’s heart-rate data is prioritized. This means the value shown in the workout can come from the external monitor rather than the earbuds.

Use Powerbeats Pro 2 with compatible gym equipment

Apple’s guide also describes a gym-equipment workflow. On compatible equipment, select Powerbeats HR as the heart-rate sensor. The equipment connection and the iPhone connection are mutually exclusive: connecting the earbuds to gym equipment disconnects them from the iPhone, and reconnecting them to the iPhone disconnects the equipment connection.

  1. Put the earbuds in and make sure they are ready to provide a heart-rate signal.
  2. Open the gym machine’s heart-rate or sensor-selection controls.
  3. Select Powerbeats HR when it is offered.
  4. Start the equipment workout and watch for the heart-rate value on the machine.
  5. When finished, reconnect the earbuds to the iPhone if you want to continue using Fitness or a phone-based workout app.

If Powerbeats HR is not offered, the equipment may not support this connection method. The Apple documentation does not establish compatibility with every machine or gym brand.

A practical pre-workout checklist

  • Powerbeats Pro 2 are charged and nearby.
  • The earbuds are paired and shown as connected in Settings > Bluetooth.
  • At least one earbud is worn securely.
  • Heart Rate Sensor is on in the connected Beats settings.
  • Earbud firmware is current.
  • Fitness or the chosen third-party app is open and ready to start a workout.
  • The third-party app supports HealthKit and has permission to read heart rate and read and record workouts in Apple Health.
  • No unintended gym-equipment connection is taking the earbuds away from the iPhone.

Limits and regional availability

Not every Powerbeats Pro 2 feature is available in every country or region. If a sensor control or related function is absent, availability may depend on the region, software configuration or supported equipment. Apple’s documentation does not provide a universal regional list in the workflow described here, so check the settings and support information applicable to your location.

Do not treat the absence of a heart-rate value as a measurement of zero. Dashes or a dimmed value mean the reading is poor or unavailable; correct the fit and connection before relying on the workout display.
