To pair Bluetooth headphones, put them in pairing mode, turn on Bluetooth on your phone, laptop, or tablet, then select the headphone name from the device’s Bluetooth settings. The exact headphone button or gesture depends on the model, so check its manual if you are unsure how to make it discoverable.

The important distinction is that turning headphones on does not always make them ready to pair. They need to be discoverable to the device you are setting up. Once you complete the first pairing, the source device generally saves the connection, so reconnecting later is usually simpler than starting over.

Before you start: put the headphones in pairing mode

  1. Charge the headphones or earbuds, or connect them to power during setup if needed.
  2. Turn them on and activate pairing or discovery mode. Depending on the model, this may involve a power button, a Bluetooth button, a case control, or another gesture. There is no universal button combination; follow the instructions for your exact model. Sony’s pairing guide is one example of model-specific manufacturer guidance.
  3. Keep the headphones near the phone, laptop, or tablet while pairing.

A blinking light or spoken prompt may indicate pairing mode on some headphones, but signals vary by model. If a previously connected device is holding the connection, disconnect the headphones from it; some models need that existing connection released before they become discoverable to another source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pairing has two sides: the headphones advertise themselves as ready to connect, and the source device finds and saves them. Keep both devices powered and near each other while you complete the steps. If the headphones do not appear, do not assume they are defective immediately; first check whether they are actually in pairing mode and whether another device is already using them.

Headphones may enter pairing mode differently on the first setup than they do when adding another source later. The exact method and status signal are model-specific. If a control does not produce the expected result, use the manual or the manufacturer’s support page for the exact headphone model rather than trying a reset sequence from a different product.

Pair headphones with an Android phone or tablet

  1. Open the device’s Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Choose Pair new device. Menu names and locations can differ by Android version and manufacturer.
  3. Put the headphones in pairing mode if you have not already done so.
  4. Tap the headphone name when it appears under available devices, then follow any on-screen prompts.

For supported headphones, Android may show a nearby-device prompt through Fast Pair. Availability depends on the accessory and device; if no prompt appears, use the standard Bluetooth settings route. After pairing, the saved device can usually reconnect without repeating setup. Google notes that paired devices remain saved until you unpair them in its Android Bluetooth setup instructions.

On Android, the standard route is the reliable fallback even if a nearby-device prompt does not appear. Open Bluetooth settings, make sure Bluetooth is on, and look for the option to pair a new device. The wording and location can vary with the Android version and the phone or tablet manufacturer’s customized software, so use the equivalent Bluetooth or connected-device controls if the labels differ.

Wait for the headphone name to appear in the available-devices list before selecting it. If more than one unfamiliar accessory is listed, check the headphone’s model name or the manufacturer’s instructions so you choose the intended device. Follow any prompt that appears on the Android screen; do not assume every headphone will show the same prompts or offer the same optional functions.

After the first successful pairing, Android keeps the saved relationship until you unpair the accessory. That means a later connection generally starts from the saved devices list rather than from Pair new device. If the headphones are already saved but are not connecting, selecting the saved entry or checking whether the headphones are connected elsewhere may be more appropriate than pairing them from scratch.

Pair headphones with an iPhone

  1. Open Settings → Bluetooth and switch Bluetooth on.
  2. Put the headphones in pairing mode.
  3. Wait for the headphone name to appear, then tap it.
  4. Complete any prompt shown on the iPhone.

Apple’s iPhone Bluetooth accessory guide covers the iPhone interface. A non-Apple headset may not display an Apple-specific setup animation; selecting it from Bluetooth settings is the standard route.

Keep the headphones in pairing mode while the iPhone searches, and select the matching name when it is listed. If it does not appear, return to the headphone controls and confirm discoverability before repeating the search. Do not rely on a particular animated setup card: it is not a universal requirement for Bluetooth headphones, especially third-party models.

Once paired, the iPhone can retain the accessory for later use. If it was paired before, check the Bluetooth settings for its saved entry and try reconnecting there before deleting the pairing. Pairing it with the iPhone also does not automatically set it up with a laptop or another tablet; each source device normally needs its own initial setup.

Pair headphones with a Windows laptop or PC

First confirm the computer has Bluetooth hardware and that Bluetooth is enabled. Windows 11 and Windows 10 use different settings paths.

Windows 11

  1. Put the headphones in pairing mode.
  2. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices, or open Quick Settings from the taskbar and use its Bluetooth control to manage Bluetooth devices.
  3. Choose to add or manage a Bluetooth device, then select the headphone name when it appears among new devices.
  4. Follow any additional prompts to finish.

Supported accessories may also trigger Swift Pair when they are nearby and discoverable. Swift Pair is not available for every headphone. Microsoft’s Windows pairing instructions describe the available routes.

If you use Quick Settings, its Bluetooth control is a way into Bluetooth device management; it does not remove the need to make the headphones discoverable. Look under the new-device or add-device area for the headphone name, select it, and finish any prompt Windows displays. Windows menu details can change, so use the current equivalent Bluetooth device controls if the wording on your computer differs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Swift Pair is a shortcut for supported accessories, not a separate requirement. If there is no prompt, or your headphones do not support it, continue with the regular Settings or Quick Settings route. The headphones still need to be nearby and in pairing mode for either method.

Windows 10 (legacy route)

Windows 10’s settings route is Settings → Devices → Bluetooth & other devices. Choose the option to add a Bluetooth device, then select the headphones when they appear. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; these steps describe its legacy interface, not a recommendation to keep using an unsupported system.

As with Windows 11, switch Bluetooth on, make the headphones discoverable, and select their name from the device list. The older Windows 10 labels should not be confused with the Windows 11 path: if you are following instructions for a different version, use that version’s corresponding settings rather than searching for a menu that is not present.

If the PC has no Bluetooth

A phone or tablet with Bluetooth does not need an adapter. For a Windows PC without built-in Bluetooth, Microsoft identifies a USB Bluetooth adapter as one way to add Bluetooth capability. Check the adapter’s compatibility with your version of Windows before choosing one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An adapter is only relevant if the computer lacks Bluetooth hardware; it is not a general requirement for pairing headphones. If you are unsure whether the PC has Bluetooth, check its device specifications or Bluetooth controls first. Choosing an adapter means checking compatibility with the Windows version and computer, then using the computer’s Bluetooth settings to pair as usual. The adapter does not replace putting the headphones into pairing mode.

What pairing does—and how to reconnect

Pairing creates a saved relationship between the headphones and a source device. After the first setup, turn on Bluetooth and bring the devices within range; they can generally reconnect automatically. If they do not, open the saved or paired devices list on the source device and select the headphones. You usually do not need to pair them again unless the saved connection was removed or has become unusable.

Pairing with a phone does not automatically pair the headphones with a laptop or tablet. Each source device normally needs its own initial pairing procedure.

Think of pairing as the initial setup and reconnecting as later use of that saved setup. Android’s instructions say paired devices stay paired until unpaired, and Windows says paired Bluetooth devices automatically connect when in range. In practice, the device may need Bluetooth enabled and the headphones available before a saved connection can resume. If a saved entry is present, try that route before deleting it and starting again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removing a saved pairing is different from simply turning Bluetooth off. If you unpair or remove the headphones, you may need to repeat the initial pairing process before they reconnect. Reserve removal for a stale or unusable pairing, such as when troubleshooting a failed connection, rather than treating it as the ordinary way to reconnect every time.

Using headphones with two devices: pairing versus multipoint

Ordinary Bluetooth pairing does not mean headphones can maintain simultaneous connections to two sources. That behavior requires headphone support for multipoint.

Google’s documented Android multipoint setup applies to compatible headphones and requires Android 8 or later with Google Play services. Both source devices must be paired with the headphones. To move playback between sources, stop audio on the first device and start it on the other. See Google’s Multipoint setup instructions for the supported setup.

There are two separate questions when using headphones with multiple devices: whether you can pair them with each source, and whether the headphones can maintain two connections at once. Pairing them individually does not establish multipoint. Check the headphone specifications or manual for multipoint support before expecting the phone and laptop to remain connected simultaneously.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the Android setup described by Google, the headphones must support multipoint, the documented Android device must run Android 8 or later and have Google Play services, and both sources must already be paired. To shift listening, stop playback on the first source and begin playback on the other. These conditions apply to Google’s documented setup; they are not a claim that every Bluetooth headphone or every platform behaves identically.

Why won’t my headphones show up in Bluetooth?

Work through these checks before trying a factory reset. Microsoft summarizes a core requirement this way: “Your Bluetooth device must be in pairing mode and within range of your PC.”

  • Pairing mode: Confirm the headphones are discoverable, not merely powered on. Follow the exact model’s manual; controls differ.
  • Range: Move the headphones close to the source device and retry.
  • Power: Charge the headphones or leave rechargeable headphones connected to power while pairing.
  • Another active connection: Disconnect them from a phone, computer, or other source they may already be using, then try again.
  • Refresh the device list: Reopen or refresh the available-device list. Google recommends checking the accessory instructions and refreshing the list in its Android Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.
  • Stale pairing: If the source has an old saved entry, remove it and pair again. On Windows, use the Bluetooth device list to remove the headphones before adding them again.

Follow the checks in that order because they address the most common setup barriers without erasing saved connections. A device list only shows accessories the source can currently discover; a headphone that is on but not in pairing mode may not appear. The headphones also need enough power to complete setup, and being too far away or connected to another source can prevent discovery.

If you are setting up on Android, check the accessory’s own instructions and refresh the available-device list. Menus and pairing behavior can vary with Android version and manufacturer customization, so a label that differs from a guide does not necessarily mean the feature is missing. Look for the Bluetooth settings and the available or new-device list, and use the standard setup route if a Fast Pair prompt does not appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are setting up on Windows, make sure Bluetooth is on, then remove an old headphone entry only if the existing saved pairing is stale or the connection will not work. Add the headphones again after putting them back into pairing mode. A remove-and-re-add step is a troubleshooting measure, not a required step for every initial pairing.

Why do headphones connect but no sound comes through?

Check the source device’s audio output selector or sound settings. A connected headset may not be the currently selected output, so sound can continue through the built-in speakers. The exact menu depends on the operating system and device; choose the headphones as the output and retry playback.

Bluetooth connection status and the selected audio output are related but distinct checks. If the source says the headphones are connected yet playback comes from its speakers, verify that the headphones are selected as the output device. The precise controls vary across phones, tablets, and computers, so use the device’s current sound or output settings rather than assuming one universal sequence of taps.

If pairing still fails

  1. Power the headphones off and on, then put them back into pairing mode.
  2. Toggle Bluetooth off and on on the source device, then search again.
  3. On Windows, remove the existing headphone entry and add it again. If it still fails, try the built-in Bluetooth troubleshooter, install available system or Bluetooth updates, and restart the computer. Microsoft lists these steps in its Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.
  4. For Mac or iPad, use the device’s Bluetooth settings to turn Bluetooth on, make the headphones discoverable, and select them when listed. Menu labels differ; consult Apple’s current guide for the specific device rather than assuming its screens match iPhone.
  5. Use the headphone maker’s instructions for a reset only if necessary. Reset procedures are model-specific and may erase saved pairings; there is no universal safe reset sequence.

On Windows, keep rechargeable headphones or speakers connected to power during pairing if possible. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking pairing mode and range, removing an existing device entry and adding it again when needed, toggling Bluetooth, using the troubleshooter, installing updates, and restarting. These are staged options: begin with power and discovery, then try the computer-side recovery steps if the connection still fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not guess at a factory-reset button combination based on another brand or model. A reset may clear saved pairings, so it can create extra setup work even when the original issue was simply that the headphones were not discoverable or were still connected elsewhere. Use the maker’s exact reset directions only when the simpler checks have not solved the problem.

Mac and iPad: the general pairing route

The source material here does not verify a current, detailed Mac or iPad settings walkthrough, so use the device’s current Bluetooth controls rather than assuming the screens match an iPhone. In general, open Bluetooth settings, turn Bluetooth on, put the headphones into pairing mode, and select their name when it appears. Consult Apple’s current guide for the exact menu labels on your model and software version.

The headphone-side requirements stay the same across these devices: the headphones need power, must be discoverable, and should be near the source during setup. If the name does not appear, check those basics and the maker’s instructions before trying device-specific recovery steps.

Which setup route should you use?

The best route depends on the source operating system, the headphone model’s pairing control, whether the computer has Bluetooth hardware, and whether the headphones support multipoint. On Android, the usual path is Bluetooth settings and Pair new device, with Fast Pair available only for supported combinations. On iPhone, use Settings → Bluetooth. On Windows, use the path for the installed version; Swift Pair is an optional shortcut for supported accessories. No route skips putting the headphones into pairing mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the goal is to use one pair with a phone and laptop, pair each device individually first. Then confirm whether the headphones support multipoint before expecting simultaneous connections. If the Windows computer has no built-in Bluetooth, a compatible USB adapter may add it; phones and tablets with Bluetooth do not need one.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pair Bluetooth headphones every time?

No. Pairing normally saves the relationship between the headphones and the source device. Later, Bluetooth can reconnect them when they are available and in range. If they do not reconnect, select the saved headphone entry rather than automatically repeating setup.

Why are my headphones not appearing in the list?

They may be powered on without being in discoverable pairing mode, too far from the source, low on battery, or already connected to another device. Check the model-specific pairing instructions, move the headphones closer, charge them, release any existing connection, and refresh the device list.

Can I pair Bluetooth headphones with a phone and a laptop?

Usually, you can pair the headphones separately with each source device. That does not guarantee they can remain connected to both at once. Simultaneous two-source use requires multipoint support in the headphones, and the Android setup documented by Google has additional compatibility requirements.

Will Fast Pair or Swift Pair work with any headphones?

No. Android Fast Pair and Windows Swift Pair are available only for supported accessory and device combinations. If a prompt does not appear, use the standard Bluetooth settings route instead.

Do I need a Bluetooth adapter for my phone or tablet?

No adapter is needed when the phone or tablet already has Bluetooth. A USB Bluetooth adapter is a possible option for a Windows PC that lacks built-in Bluetooth; check compatibility with the Windows version before choosing one.

Should I reset my headphones if pairing fails?

Not as a first step. Check pairing mode, range, power, and whether the headphones are connected to another source. A reset is model-specific and may erase saved pairings, so follow the headphone maker’s instructions only if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pair Bluetooth headphones every time?

No. Pairing normally saves the relationship between the headphones and the source device. Later, they can reconnect when Bluetooth is enabled and both devices are available and in range. If they do not, try selecting the saved headphone entry before pairing again.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Why are my headphones not appearing in the Bluetooth list?

Check that they are in pairing mode, charged, close to the source, and not already connected to another device. Follow the model’s manual for the pairing control, then refresh the available-device list.

Can Bluetooth headphones connect to a phone and laptop at the same time?

Only if the headphones support multipoint. Pairing with both devices separately does not by itself provide simultaneous connections. Google’s documented Android multipoint setup requires compatible headphones, Android 8 or later with Google Play services, and pairing both sources.

Do all headphones support Android Fast Pair or Windows Swift Pair?

No. Fast Pair and Swift Pair depend on accessory and platform support. If a prompt does not appear, use the regular Bluetooth settings steps for your device.

Do I need a Bluetooth adapter to pair headphones?

Only consider a USB Bluetooth adapter if a Windows PC lacks built-in Bluetooth. A phone or tablet that already has Bluetooth does not need one; check adapter compatibility with Windows before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reset headphones that will not pair?

Try pairing mode, range, battery, and disconnecting other sources first. Reset steps vary by model and may erase saved pairings, so use the maker’s instructions rather than a generic button combination.

The Bottom Line

For a first connection, charge and power the headphones, put them in model-specific pairing mode, turn on Bluetooth on the source, and select the headphone name. Use the instructions for Android, iPhone, or the correct Windows version; if the headphones are already paired, try reconnecting from the saved-device list. For discovery problems, check mode, range, power, and other active connections before removing a stale pairing or attempting a model-specific reset.
