To pair Bluetooth headphones, put the headphones into their model-specific pairing mode, turn on Bluetooth on your phone or computer, open the device’s add or pair screen, and select the headphones when they appear. If they do not appear, check pairing mode, battery, distance, and whether they are still connected to another device before removing the saved connection and trying again.
Pair Bluetooth headphones in four steps
- Put the headphones into pairing mode. Turn them on, then use the model’s pairing button or button combination until the indicator shows that they are discoverable. Turning the headphones on is not always enough. The control and indicator pattern differ by model, so use the headphones’ manual for the exact action. First-time pairing can also use a different sequence from adding another device.
- Enable Bluetooth on the source device. The source is the phone, tablet, laptop, desktop computer, or other device that will send audio.
- Open the source device’s add-device screen. Choose the option to add, pair, or connect a Bluetooth device, then wait for the headphone name to appear.
- Select the headphones and finish the prompts. Tap or click the headphone name and accept any confirmation shown by the source device. Keep both devices close together while the connection is negotiated.
After pairing, the headphones may reconnect automatically whenever Bluetooth is enabled and the headphones are turned on and within range. Automatic reconnection is not guaranteed if the headphones have connected to another previously used device.
Before you start
Identify which device should provide the audio and temporarily move other previously used sources out of the process. A nearby phone, tablet, television, or computer can reconnect first and make the intended source appear to fail. Charge the headphones before troubleshooting so a low battery does not interrupt discovery or connection. Keep the source’s Bluetooth settings open while you scan, and have the headphone model’s instructions available for its exact pairing control.

Pairing mode makes the headphones visible to a new Bluetooth source. A headset can be powered on without being discoverable, so a phone or computer may find nothing even though the headphones appear to be working normally.

Entering pairing mode
There is no universal button sequence. Depending on the model, pairing may involve holding a power button, a dedicated Bluetooth button, or a touch control for several seconds. Consult the model’s instructions rather than assuming that a short press will work. Watch for the model’s pairing indicator or an audio prompt.
First-time pairing versus a second device
Many headphones enter pairing mode automatically the first time they are switched on. Once they have a saved connection, they may instead try to reconnect to the last source. To add a second phone or computer, you may need to deliberately enter pairing mode again while the headphones are on.
Adding a second device does not always mean both devices can use the headphones simultaneously. Some models support more than one saved device or a special multipoint feature, while others keep one active connection at a time. Follow the model’s instructions and disconnect the old source when the new source cannot take control.

| Situation | What the headphones may do | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| First use | Enter pairing mode automatically | Turn them on, then look for the name on the source device |
| Previously paired with one device | Attempt to reconnect to that device | Disconnect or move the old device away, then enter pairing mode manually |
| Adding another device | Remain connected to the first device or leave discovery quickly | Use the model-specific pairing control and select the headphones from the new source |
| Pairing window expired | Stop appearing in the available-device list | Enter pairing mode again and repeat the scan |
Some models leave pairing mode after a limited period; Sony gives five minutes as an example for certain models, not as a universal Bluetooth limit. If the name disappears while you are reading the device list, restart pairing mode rather than repeatedly refreshing an expired scan.
Connect on Windows 11
Microsoft’s Windows instructions use the Bluetooth control in Quick Settings and the device list under New devices. The computer must have Bluetooth hardware. If it does not, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter can add that capability.
- Turn on the headphones and place them in pairing mode.
- On the Windows taskbar, open Quick Settings and select the Bluetooth control. If Bluetooth is off, turn it on.
- Choose Manage Bluetooth devices.
- Under New devices, select the headphone name.
- Accept the Windows confirmation and wait for the status to change to connected or paired.
You can also use Windows Settings and its Add device route. Choose Bluetooth as the device type, then select the headphones when they are listed.
If the Bluetooth control is missing
A missing Bluetooth control can mean that Bluetooth is disabled, the computer lacks Bluetooth hardware, or its Bluetooth driver or adapter is not being detected. Confirm that the computer supports Bluetooth. For a desktop or laptop without built-in Bluetooth, use a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter, install its supplied driver if required, and then repeat the Windows pairing steps.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 may present the controls differently as updates arrive. Use the labels visible on the computer rather than following an old screenshot. If an adapter is newly installed, verify that Windows detects it before attempting to pair; otherwise the headphones cannot appear in the device list.
Connect on Android, iPhone, Mac, or another source
The labels and menu locations vary by operating system version and device manufacturer. Use the source device’s current Bluetooth settings, not an old screenshot or a menu path from a different version.

- Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
- Choose the control to add or pair a new device.
- Select the headphone name when it appears and follow the confirmation prompt.
Sony’s support guidance provides separate instructions for Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, and other sources. If the headphone name does not appear, leave the Bluetooth screen open while re-entering pairing mode; some devices scan only while that screen is active.
Switching between a phone and a computer
Turn Bluetooth on for only the source you intend to use while troubleshooting. A phone in the same room can immediately reclaim the headphones through automatic reconnection, making the computer appear unable to connect. Disconnect the headphones from the old source or temporarily turn Bluetooth off there, then place the headphones in pairing mode and select them on the new source.
When switching back later, you may not need to pair from scratch. If the saved relationship remains intact, select the headphones from the source’s known-device list. If that fails, use the normal pairing process and remove the old record only when the source cannot establish a connection.
When the headphones do not appear
Work through these checks in order. Stop when the headphone name becomes visible.
1. Verify pairing mode
Powering on alone may not make the headphones discoverable. Repeat the model’s pairing action and look for the pairing indicator or voice prompt. If the headphones were already paired with another device, deliberate pairing mode is especially important.
2. Bring the devices together
Place the headphones close to the phone or computer and keep the Bluetooth settings screen open. Microsoft identifies distance as a possible cause of instability. Remove unnecessary physical separation while completing the initial pairing.

3. Charge the headphones
Low battery can prevent some headphones from entering pairing mode or can cause them to drop the connection during setup. Charge them, switch them off and on, and try pairing again.
4. Check other remembered devices
A previously used phone, tablet, television, or computer may still hold an active connection. Turn Bluetooth off on those nearby devices or disconnect the headphones from them. Then re-enter pairing mode on the headphones.
5. Re-enter pairing mode after a timeout
If the headphone name appeared earlier but disappeared, the model may have left its discovery window. Turn the headphones off, turn them on, enter pairing mode again, and rescan. The length of that window is model-specific.

6. Confirm that the source can use Bluetooth

7. Check the name you are selecting
Some headphones show a model name, while others show a shortened product name or a name previously assigned by the user. If several entries appear, use the model’s indicator or manual to identify the correct one. Do not repeatedly select unrelated nearby devices; return the headphones to pairing mode and scan again.
When the headphones appear but will not connect
Seeing a headphone name proves that discovery worked; it does not prove that the saved pairing record or current Bluetooth session is healthy.
Use the Windows remove-and-add cycle
- Open Windows Bluetooth settings and locate the headphones in the saved-device list.
- Remove or forget the headphones.
- Turn the headphones off and on, then put them back into pairing mode.
- Choose Add device, select Bluetooth, and select the headphones under New devices.
Removing the old record forces Windows to create a fresh pairing instead of reusing a damaged or outdated record. This is a troubleshooting step, not something required every time you use the headphones.
Reset the Bluetooth session
- Turn Bluetooth off on the source device.
- Wait about 10 seconds.
- Turn Bluetooth on again.
- Retry the connection with the headphones in pairing mode.
Microsoft recommends this off-and-on step for Windows Bluetooth problems. Also switch the headphones off and on, and retry after charging them.
Restart the source device
If the headphones are visible but every connection attempt fails, restart the phone or computer. This clears temporary Bluetooth service problems without changing the headphone’s saved settings.
Install available Windows updates
On Windows, check for operating-system updates. Microsoft also provides an automated Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter when it is available on the system. Run it after the basic remove-and-add and Bluetooth reset steps if the computer still cannot connect.
Test one variable at a time
Do not simultaneously reset the headphones, change several source settings, and move between devices. First determine whether the problem is discovery, connection, or audio output. Then apply the matching fix and retry. This makes it clear which step solved the problem and avoids deleting a working pairing unnecessarily.
When the headphones connect but audio is wrong
Bluetooth connection status and audio output selection are separate. A source device can show the headphones as connected while continuing to send sound to its built-in speakers, a monitor, or another output.

- Raise the source volume and the headphone volume, if the model has separate controls.
- Pause and resume playback after changing the output selection.
Exact sound-menu labels differ across Windows, Android, iPhone, Mac, and manufacturer interfaces, so use the current controls on your platform. If the headphones are selected but silent, disconnect and reconnect them once, then recheck the output choice.
If audio works in one application but not another, check that application’s own output selector as well as the system-wide output. If no application produces sound, return to the Bluetooth connection list, disconnect once, reconnect, and verify the headphones remain the selected output.
Diagnose the symptom instead of repeating the same step
| Symptom | Most useful first checks | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No headphone name appears | Pairing mode, battery, distance, another active device | Re-enter pairing mode close to the source and scan again |
| Name appears, but connection fails | Stale saved record or temporary Bluetooth service issue | On Windows, remove the device, toggle Bluetooth off for about 10 seconds, then add it again |
| It connects, then drops immediately | Low battery, distance, or another device reclaiming the connection | Charge the headphones, keep them close, and disable Bluetooth on nearby previously used sources |
| Status says connected, but sound comes from speakers | Wrong audio-output selection | Select the headphones in the source device’s sound controls |
| It worked before but not now | Changed source, expired pairing mode, or corrupted saved record | Disconnect the old source; if using Windows, remove and pair the headphones again |
| Only one earcup or channel works | Connection state or model-specific headphone behavior | Reconnect both headphones and follow the model’s instructions before assuming a hardware fault |
How automatic reconnection works
Pairing saves a relationship between the headphones and source. Reconnection is a later attempt to use that saved relationship. It generally requires Bluetooth to be enabled on the source, the headphones to be powered on, and both devices to be close enough for a stable signal.
Automatic reconnection can fail when the headphones are already connected to another remembered source, when the battery is too low, or when the source has retained an unusable pairing record. In those cases, disconnect the competing source, power-cycle the headphones, and use the normal Bluetooth device list to select them manually.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Reconnection is therefore not proof that a new pairing is needed. First check whether the headphones are connected elsewhere and whether Bluetooth is enabled on the intended source. Create a new pairing record only after those simpler causes have been ruled out.
A practical recovery order
Use this short sequence when you do not know which cause applies:
- Charge the headphones.
- Turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones, tablets, televisions, and computers that have used them before.
- Restart the headphones and enter the model-specific pairing mode.
- Move them close to the intended source.
- Turn Bluetooth off on the source, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it on again.
- Scan the add-device screen and select the headphones.
- If the source is Windows and the attempt still fails, remove the saved headphone entry and add it again.
- After connection, select the headphones as the audio output.
This order separates discovery, connection, and audio-output problems instead of treating them as one failure. If the sequence succeeds, leave the pairing intact and note which source was connected so another nearby device does not unexpectedly reclaim it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When replacing the headphones is not the first fix
Buying another pair is rarely the appropriate first response to a pairing problem. Most failures described here involve pairing mode, battery, another active source, distance, a stale saved record, or output selection. Replacement becomes more reasonable only after the headphones cannot enter pairing mode even when charged, fail with more than one compatible source, or show a physical or battery fault. Confirm the problem with the model’s instructions and, when possible, another source device before concluding that the headphones themselves have failed.

Platform and model caveats
- Button combinations, indicator patterns, pairing timeouts, and multi-device behavior are model-specific.
- Windows 10 and Windows 11 can use different labels or layouts as updates arrive; follow the labels currently shown on your computer.
- Android and iPhone menu names vary by operating-system version and manufacturer, so use the current Bluetooth settings on the device in hand.
- Firmware changes can alter reconnection behavior without changing the basic pairing process.
- No universal Bluetooth range, pairing-success rate, or timeout should be assumed from another model’s documentation.
Sources and update note
The Windows procedures and troubleshooting sequence follow Microsoft’s guidance for pairing and Bluetooth connection problems in Windows 10 and Windows 11. The model-dependent pairing and connection cautions follow Sony support guidance, whose general pairing article was listed as modified on April 6, 2026. Because operating-system labels, firmware behavior, and headset controls can change, verify the exact headphone model and source-device version before relying on a device-specific shortcut.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my Bluetooth headphones not showing up?
Make sure they are in pairing mode, not merely turned on. Charge them, move them close to the source, disable Bluetooth on previously used nearby devices, and scan again while the source’s Bluetooth screen is open. If the pairing window expired, enter pairing mode again.
Why are my headphones paired but not connected?
A saved pairing does not guarantee an active connection. Disconnect the headphones from another remembered source, toggle Bluetooth off for about 10 seconds and back on, then reconnect. On Windows, remove the saved device and add it again if the connection still fails.
How do I pair Bluetooth headphones with Windows 11?
Put the headphones in model-specific pairing mode, open Quick Settings, turn on Bluetooth, choose Manage Bluetooth devices, and select the headphones under New devices. Windows Settings also offers an Add device route. The computer needs Bluetooth hardware or a compatible USB adapter.
Why do Bluetooth headphones connect but play no sound?
The source may still be sending audio to its speakers, a monitor, or another output. Open the source device’s sound controls, select the Bluetooth headphones as the active output, adjust both volume controls, and resume playback. Menu names vary by platform.
How do I connect headphones to a second phone or computer?
Keep the original source from reclaiming the headphones by disconnecting it or turning its Bluetooth off temporarily. With the headphones powered on, use the model-specific pairing control, then select them from the second device’s add-device screen. Multi-device behavior differs by model.
When should I replace Bluetooth headphones instead of troubleshooting?
Replacement is not the first fix for most pairing failures. Consider it only after the headphones cannot enter pairing mode when charged, fail with more than one compatible source, or show a physical or battery fault. Verify the model instructions and test another source first.
