To pair a Nintendo Switch 2 controller, use the method for its model: attach Joy-Con 2 to a powered-on console, connect a Switch 2 Pro Controller by USB, or open Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. After pairing, update firmware separately through System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers. The controller must be powered on and paired, and the console should already have its latest system update.

Which pairing method should you use?

Controller or situation Fastest pairing route Alternative
Joy-Con 2 attached to Switch 2 Slide the Joy-Con 2 onto the powered-on console. It is ready to use and is also paired for later wireless use when detached. Use Controllers > Change Grip/Order, then hold SYNC for at least one second.
Detached Joy-Con 2 Open Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold that Joy-Con’s SYNC button for at least one second. Attach it to the console first, then detach it.
Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller (model BEE-008) Connect it to the console or dock with a USB cable. Open Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold SYNC for at least one second.

Choose the physical route when you want the quickest first connection or the controller battery is low. Choose wireless SYNC when the controller is already in your hands and you want to play without a cable. For Joy-Con 2, the connection method and the way you hold the controllers are separate decisions.

Pairing and grip selection are separate for Joy-Con 2. The console can recognize the two controllers without knowing whether you plan to hold them together or use each one horizontally. Confirm the intended grip when the on-screen prompts appear.

Before you pair

  • Install the latest system update on the Switch 2. Nintendo places controller firmware updating after the console update, and an outdated system can also complicate troubleshooting.
  • Charge the controller enough to remain on during pairing and updating. A controller with a critically low battery may show flashing LEDs and can lose its connection.
  • If you are using a Pro Controller by cable, connect the USB cable directly to the console or to the Switch 2 dock.
  • Keep the controller near the console while making a wireless connection. Local communication conditions, controller type and active features can affect how many devices work at once.
  • If Bluetooth audio is connected, remember that wireless controller use is limited to two players. Disconnect the audio device before setting up a third wireless player.

Have the HOME Menu available before starting a wireless pairing attempt. The SYNC button only starts the pairing process when the console is looking in Change Grip/Order; pressing it elsewhere can have a different result.

How do I pair Joy-Con 2 to Nintendo Switch 2?

Attach Joy-Con 2 to the console

  1. Turn on the Switch 2.
  2. Slide the left and/or right Joy-Con 2 onto the console’s rails until each is fully attached.
  3. Use the attached controller. Nintendo says an attached Joy-Con 2 is ready to use and is also paired wirelessly, so you can detach it and continue using it wirelessly.

Attaching Joy-Con 2 is the simplest route when the controller has not yet been paired. It does not require opening the pairing screen or pressing SYNC. You can attach one side or both sides; each detached side is treated as its own wireless controller when you later use it away from the console.

Pair a detached Joy-Con 2 wirelessly

  1. From the HOME Menu, open Controllers.
  2. Select Change Grip/Order.
  3. On the Joy-Con 2 you want to pair, press and hold the SYNC button for at least one second. The console will search for the controller.
  4. Wait for the player LED or LEDs to stop the connection animation and remain lit. A solid player indicator means the controller is connected.

If you have two detached Joy-Con 2 controllers, repeat the process for the other controller if it is not already connected. Pairing one side does not guarantee that the other side has an active connection. Each detached left or right Joy-Con 2 counts as one wireless controller.

Choose a Joy-Con 2 grip

After the controller is recognized, the Change Grip/Order screen asks how you will hold it. Follow the button illustration shown on the Switch 2:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Dual-controller grip: press the indicated L/R or ZL/ZR combination on the two Joy-Con 2 controllers you will hold together.
  • Horizontal solo use: press SL + SR on each Joy-Con 2 intended for individual horizontal play.

Pairing only establishes communication with the console; this confirmation tells the game which buttons and player arrangement to use. If the game responds as though the Joy-Con is held the wrong way, return to Controllers > Change Grip/Order and select the correct grip again. Repeating this grip confirmation does not require deleting the controller’s pairing.

How do I pair the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller?

USB pairing

  1. Wake the Switch 2 and connect the Pro Controller (model BEE-008) to the console or dock with a USB cable.
  2. Wait for the console to register the controller. You can use it while it remains connected.
  3. Disconnect the cable when you want to use the controller wirelessly. The USB connection is the most direct way to register a new controller or recover when wireless discovery is not finding it.

USB pairing is useful when the controller is new, its battery is low, or wireless discovery is not finding it. If the controller does not appear after connecting, verify that it is charged, reconnect the cable, and then use Change Grip/Order to complete a wireless registration if necessary.

Wireless SYNC pairing

  1. Open Controllers > Change Grip/Order from the HOME Menu.
  2. Press and hold the Pro Controller’s SYNC button for at least one second.
  3. Wait for a player LED to remain lit, confirming that the console has connected it.

A short press of SYNC has a different purpose: it temporarily disconnects a wireless controller. Press any button afterward to reconnect it. Do not treat that brief press as the full pairing procedure. Holding SYNC for at least one second while the pairing screen is open is the step that starts wireless pairing.

How can you tell whether the controller connected?

LED behavior Meaning What to do
One or more player LEDs remain solid The controller is connected. Continue to the game or firmware update.
LEDs flash in sequence repeatedly The console and controller are attempting to connect. Wait briefly. If the sequence continues, repeat the relevant SYNC or USB pairing steps.
LEDs are unlit The controller is disconnected or the connection was lost. Press a button to wake it, reconnect through Change Grip/Order, or attach/connect it by USB.
LEDs flash while the controller is otherwise unresponsive The battery may be very low. Charge the controller, then pair again.

For a multi-controller setup, check each controller separately. A solid LED on one Joy-Con 2 does not confirm that the other Joy-Con 2 is connected. Sequential flashing is a connection attempt, not confirmation that play is ready, and an unlit indicator can mean the connection was lost after it had previously worked.

How do I update a Switch 2 controller?

Controller firmware updating is a separate settings action; pairing alone does not install an update. The same menu is used for Joy-Con 2 and the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller.

  1. On the Switch 2, open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Select Controllers & Accessories.
  3. Choose Update Controllers.
  4. Make sure the controller you want to update is powered on and paired. If it is not listed, return to Controllers > Change Grip/Order and pair it first.
  5. Start the update and keep the console and controller powered on while it runs.
  6. Repeat the process for any other paired controller that needs the update.

Nintendo Support states that when multiple controllers are paired, “the controllers will be updated one controller at a time.” The menu therefore may finish one controller before offering the next. If an update stops or reports that it did not complete, retry the Update Controllers step after confirming that the controller remains powered on and paired.

Update the console’s system software before attempting controller firmware. If the console itself is waiting for an update, complete that first, restart if requested, and then return to System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers. Do not interpret the absence of an update prompt as a pairing failure; a correctly paired controller may simply have no newer firmware available.

How many controllers can Switch 2 use?

Nintendo says that up to eight wireless controllers can be paired or connected in most circumstances. The practical number can vary with the controller type, controller features, software, and local communication conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Detached left and right Joy-Con 2 controllers count separately. Two detached Joy-Con 2 therefore use two wireless-controller connections.
  • Joy-Con 2 attached to the console do not count against the connected-controller limit.
  • When a Bluetooth audio device is connected, wireless controller use is limited to two players. Disconnect the Bluetooth audio device if you need to connect a third wireless player.

These limits concern simultaneous wireless use, not whether a controller can be updated. An attached Joy-Con 2 or a Pro Controller connected by USB can be handled through its respective wired route. In a group setup, count each detached Joy-Con 2 rather than counting a left-and-right pair as one device. Also account for the current game’s own player and controller support; the eight-controller figure is a Nintendo system limit in most circumstances, not a guarantee that every title accepts eight players.

Do you need the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip?

No. The Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, model BEE-010, is an optional accessory sold separately. It provides another way to charge Joy-Con 2 and pair them through the dock, but ordinary wireless pairing, attachment pairing, and controller firmware updates do not require it.

If you already own the grip, connect it through the dock and use it as a charging or wired-pairing convenience. If you do not, follow the console-attachment or Change Grip/Order method instead. Buying the grip is therefore a comfort or charging choice, not a requirement for keeping controller firmware current.

Why won’t my Joy-Con 2 connect?

The console does not find the controller

  1. Check that the Switch 2 has its latest system update.
  2. Charge the Joy-Con 2, then attach it to the powered-on console. Detach it after the console recognizes it and test wireless use.
  3. If you need a wireless pairing, open Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold the Joy-Con 2 SYNC button for at least one second.
  4. Watch the LEDs. Sequential flashing means the controller is still trying to connect; a solid LED confirms success.

Do not stop at the first visible LED activity. Wait for a solid player indicator, then test the buttons. If only one side of a pair is lit, repeat the process for the other side.

It paired, then disconnected

First check the battery and the system update. A brief SYNC press intentionally disconnects a wireless controller; press any button to reconnect it. If the controller repeatedly drops out, pair it again through Change Grip/Order and update its firmware through System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers.

In a docked troubleshooting situation, Nintendo’s Joy-Con guidance also calls out checking the dock’s Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. This is a specific docked-connection troubleshooting step, not a universal fix for every wireless pairing failure. After changing the cable, open Controllers > Change Grip/Order and press SYNC to reconnect.

The buttons do not match the way you are holding the Joy-Con

The controller may be paired but assigned the wrong grip. Return to Controllers > Change Grip/Order. For a two-controller grip, press the displayed L/R or ZL/ZR combination. For horizontal solo use, press SL+SR on each Joy-Con 2 being used alone. This is a grip-selection problem, not necessarily a failed wireless connection.

A third wireless player cannot join

Check whether a Bluetooth audio device is connected. Switch 2 limits wireless controllers to two players while Bluetooth audio is active. Disconnect the audio device, then pair the additional controller from Change Grip/Order. If the audio device is disconnected and the problem remains, count detached Joy-Con 2 separately and check the game’s supported player configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why won’t my Switch 2 Pro Controller connect?

  1. Confirm that the Pro Controller is charged.
  2. Connect it by USB to the console or dock and wait for registration. This provides a direct pairing route when wireless discovery fails.
  3. For wireless pairing, open Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold SYNC for at least one second.
  4. Install any available controller firmware update from System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers.
  5. Reset the Pro Controller by pressing SYNC once, then pressing another button. Return to Change Grip/Order if it does not reconnect.

The reset procedure is not the same as clearing every controller record from the console. Use the system-wide disconnect option only when you intentionally want to remove the console’s wireless-controller pairing information. For a single failed connection, charging, USB registration, or the one-second SYNC process is less disruptive.

How do you clear wireless controller pairings?

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Select Controllers & Accessories.
  3. Choose Disconnect Controllers.
  4. Follow the confirmation prompt. This clears the console’s wireless controller pairing information, so controllers must be paired again before wireless play.

Use this option as a broader reset, not as the first response to a single missed connection. For one controller, retry Change Grip/Order, charge it, or use USB first. After clearing the records, pair each needed controller again and confirm its grip before starting a game.

Common pairing and update mistakes

  • Using SYNC for too short a time: wireless pairing requires holding SYNC for at least one second while Change Grip/Order is open. A brief press temporarily disconnects instead.
  • Assuming attachment selects the grip: attaching Joy-Con 2 pairs it, but the console still needs the L/R, ZL/ZR, or SL+SR confirmation for the intended arrangement.
  • Updating before pairing: Update Controllers works with a powered-on, paired controller. Pair it first if it does not appear.
  • Updating only one of several controllers: Nintendo processes multiple paired controllers one at a time, so return to the update menu for each controller that still needs attention.
  • Reading flashing LEDs as success: sequential flashing means connection is still in progress, while a solid player LED confirms connection.
  • Buying an accessory to solve a software step: the BEE-010 Charging Grip is optional and is not required for pairing or firmware updates.

A practical pairing-and-update checklist

  • Console system software is current.
  • Controller battery is charged.
  • Joy-Con 2 is attached to the powered-on console, or the correct controller is selected in Change Grip/Order.
  • SYNC is held for at least one second for wireless pairing; a short SYNC press is reserved for temporary disconnection.
  • Joy-Con 2 grip is confirmed with the displayed L/R, ZL/ZR, or SL+SR buttons.
  • A solid player LED confirms the connection.
  • Firmware is updated from System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers.
  • If several controllers are paired, each is updated one at a time.
  • Bluetooth audio is disconnected when more than two wireless players are needed.
  • Use Disconnect Controllers only when you intend to clear all wireless pairing information.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I pair a controller to Nintendo Switch 2?

For Joy-Con 2, attach it to a powered-on Switch 2 or open Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold SYNC for at least one second. For the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, connect it by USB to the console or dock, or use the same Change Grip/Order and one-second SYNC method.

How do I update my Switch 2 controller?

Update the console first. Then open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers. The controller must be powered on and paired. If several are paired, Nintendo updates them one at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why won’t my Joy-Con connect?

Charge it, confirm the console has the latest system update, open Controllers > Change Grip/Order, and hold SYNC for at least one second. A solid player LED confirms connection; sequential flashing means it is still trying.

Why does my Joy-Con work but use the wrong buttons?

Pairing does not choose the physical grip. On Change Grip/Order, confirm the displayed L/R or ZL/ZR combination for a dual-controller grip, or SL+SR on each Joy-Con 2 for horizontal solo use.

Can I pair more than two wireless controllers?

Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers can be paired or connected in most circumstances, although software and local conditions vary. Bluetooth audio limits wireless controller use to two players; disconnect it for a third wireless player.

Do I need a Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip to update firmware?

No. The BEE-010 Charging Grip is sold separately and is optional. You can pair and update Joy-Con 2 through the console attachment or Change Grip/Order process without it.

The Bottom Line

Pair by attachment, USB, or one-second SYNC according to the controller, then confirm the Joy-Con 2 grip and a solid player LED. For firmware, update the Switch 2 first and use System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers with each powered-on, paired controller. If connection fails, charge it, retry Change Grip/Order, and reserve Disconnect Controllers for a full pairing reset.
