To pair a Bluetooth mouse with a Chromebook, turn on Chromebook Bluetooth, put the charged mouse into discoverable pairing mode, choose + Pair new device, select the mouse, and follow the prompts. If it is missing or unstable, work through power, pairing mode, saved-device, distance, interference, software-update, and restart checks before contacting support.
Check that both devices are ready
Verify that the Chromebook has Bluetooth
Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the Chromebook screen and look for Bluetooth in the status area. A Bluetooth control there confirms that the Chromebook supports the feature. Select it and switch Bluetooth on. Google’s official pairing instructions use this status-area route: Connect to Bluetooth devices on your Chromebook.
If Bluetooth is not shown, the model may not support it, Bluetooth may be disabled by an administrator, or the Chromebook may have a system problem. Check the exact Chromebook model documentation or contact its manufacturer rather than assuming a mouse is defective. Repeatedly resetting the mouse cannot make an unavailable Chromebook Bluetooth control appear.

Prepare the mouse
Charge or install batteries in the mouse, turn it on, and make sure its Bluetooth function is enabled. The mouse must be discoverable and actively in pairing mode. Pairing controls differ by model: some use a dedicated Bluetooth button, while others require holding a button for several seconds or selecting a channel. Follow the mouse maker’s instructions for the exact sequence. Google summarizes the requirement this way: “Before you pair a device to your Chromebook, on the device, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on, discoverable, and it’s in pairing mode.”

Being powered on is not always the same as being discoverable. A mouse can be switched on but asleep, already connected to another computer, or waiting on a different channel. Put it into pairing mode immediately before you start the Chromebook scan. If the mouse leaves that mode after a short time, repeat the mouse-specific sequence and scan again instead of leaving it idle while you troubleshoot.
Keep the first attempt simple
Place the mouse close to the Chromebook, away from other wireless equipment and appliances. Close unnecessary tabs and apps so troubleshooting is not complicated by avoidable system load. Leave the mouse in pairing mode while you search. For the first test, use one mouse and one Chromebook rather than trying to pair several devices at once, and keep the mouse’s model name or identifier available so you can recognize the correct entry.
Pair the mouse in ChromeOS
- Open the Bluetooth controls. Select the time at the bottom right, then select Bluetooth. Confirm the switch is on.
- Start a new pairing. Select + Pair new device. The Chromebook begins scanning for nearby discoverable devices.
- Select the mouse. When the mouse name appears, select it. If several devices are listed, use the name or model identifier printed on the mouse or its packaging.
- Complete any prompt. Follow the on-screen instructions. If ChromeOS displays a PIN request, enter the code specified by the mouse’s instructions and check each digit before confirming.
- Verify the result. Reopen the Bluetooth area and look under Currently connected. The mouse should be listed there before you begin using it.
- Test movement and buttons. Move the pointer across the screen and try the primary and secondary buttons. A pointer that responds confirms an active connection; a name appearing in the list alone does not.
These labels are the route documented by Google for compatible Chromebooks and Bluetooth mice. ChromeOS wording can vary slightly between releases, but the sequence—Bluetooth on, + Pair new device, select the mouse, then confirm under Currently connected—remains the useful pattern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the list contains several similarly named devices, do not pair the first one automatically. Check the mouse’s printed model identifier, then confirm that the selected entry moves to Currently connected. If a prompt disappears or pairing does not finish, put the mouse back into pairing mode and start a fresh scan. Avoid pressing random mouse buttons during the prompt, because the model’s instructions determine which control confirms pairing or changes channels.
Reconnect, manage, or remove a saved mouse
A mouse paired previously normally does not need to be paired again. Google states that previously connected non-audio devices, including Bluetooth keyboards and mice, can reconnect automatically when they are turned on and near the Chromebook: Connect your Chromebook to Bluetooth devices. Turn on the mouse nearby and wait briefly before starting a new pairing.
Automatic reconnection depends on the mouse being available and the Chromebook retaining the saved relationship. If the mouse is connected to another nearby computer, turn Bluetooth off on that other device or disconnect the mouse there before testing the Chromebook. Otherwise, the Chromebook may not be able to establish the connection you expect.

To manage a saved connection, open Settings, choose Bluetooth, and select the mouse entry under the currently connected or previously connected devices. Use the device-management option shown by your ChromeOS version. To remove a damaged or outdated pairing, choose Forget (or the equivalent remove control), then return to + Pair new device and pair it again. Forgetting is useful when the Chromebook remembers a connection but the mouse will not complete a fresh handshake.
Forget only the mouse entry you are repairing. Removing unrelated devices makes it harder to identify what changed and does not address a mouse that is out of power or not discoverable. After forgetting, turn the mouse off and on, re-enter its pairing mode, and keep it close while the Chromebook scans.

When the Chromebook cannot find the mouse
Start with the readiness conditions rather than changing ChromeOS settings at random. The mouse must have power, Bluetooth enabled, and a discoverable pairing state at the moment the Chromebook scans. A mouse that is merely switched on may be connected to another computer, asleep, or not advertising itself.
- Switch Chromebook Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, and switch it on again.
- Turn the mouse off and on, then use its model-specific control to enter pairing mode again.
- Keep the mouse close to the Chromebook and select + Pair new device once more.
- If the mouse was paired with another computer or tablet, disconnect or disable Bluetooth on that nearby device so it cannot capture the mouse.
- Check the mouse maker’s instructions for a battery indicator, pairing timeout, channel selector, or reset gesture.
Google’s troubleshooting guidance also says to check that the Bluetooth device is supported and fully charged. The Chromebook help page lists those checks alongside the pairing procedure: Google Chromebook Help. If Bluetooth itself is missing from the Chromebook status area, skip repeated mouse resets and investigate Chromebook compatibility or hardware support instead.
If the mouse still does not appear, repeat the scan only after confirming that the mouse is actively advertising. A saved connection on another device, a depleted battery, or a pairing mode that timed out can all produce the same visible symptom: no mouse in the Chromebook list. The useful test is to change one condition at a time—power, pairing mode, proximity, then the scan—so you know which correction helped.
When the mouse appears but will not connect
An entry in the scan list means the Chromebook can see the mouse; it does not guarantee that the saved relationship is usable. First toggle Chromebook Bluetooth off and on, then select the mouse again. If ChromeOS presents a PIN prompt, read the mouse documentation and enter the requested code carefully rather than guessing.

For a mouse that was paired before, remove the old entry before trying again:
- Open Settings and select Bluetooth.
- Select the mouse under the connected or previously connected list.
- Choose Forget or the available remove-device control.
- Turn the mouse off and back on, place it in pairing mode, and run + Pair new device.
If the second attempt fails, restart the Chromebook and install any available ChromeOS updates. Google includes both a restart and updates among its general Bluetooth and hardware troubleshooting steps: Fix hardware and system problems. Do not repeatedly delete unrelated Bluetooth devices; change only the mouse entry you are repairing.
After the restart, verify Bluetooth is still enabled and repeat the short pairing sequence from the beginning. If the mouse appears but fails at the same prompt every time, record that prompt and any displayed code for support. The exact failure point—immediately after selection, during a PIN request, or while saving the device—helps the manufacturer identify whether the issue is a model-specific instruction or a Chromebook problem.

When the mouse connects and then disconnects
Intermittent connections usually need environmental and power checks before a reset. Confirm that the mouse remains charged during use and that the Chromebook and mouse are close together. Move the mouse away from other wireless devices and appliances that could create interference. Also close browser tabs and apps that are not in use.
Use this order so you can identify the change that helps:
- Charge the mouse fully or replace its batteries, then test again.
- Move the mouse and Chromebook to the same desk or another short-distance position.
- Separate the mouse from nearby wireless transmitters and household appliances.
- Toggle Chromebook Bluetooth off and on.
- Restart the Chromebook and install available system updates.
These actions come from Google’s Bluetooth troubleshooting recommendations, which also require that the device be supported: Google’s hardware and system troubleshooting guide. If the mouse works reliably only when very close, treat distance or interference as the leading suspect; if it disconnects even beside an updated Chromebook with a full charge, move to model-specific support.

Test pointer movement after each change rather than making every change at once. A dropout that stops after charging points to power; one that stops after moving away from wireless equipment points to the environment. If no change helps, note whether the failure occurs immediately after wake-up, during ordinary movement, or after a period of use and include that description when contacting support.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not use Chromebook recovery as an early mouse fix
Recovery reinstalls ChromeOS and can erase local data, so it is not a sensible first response to a mouse that will not pair. Complete the Bluetooth checks, forget-and-repair procedure, restart, and update steps first. Google places recovery in its broader hardware troubleshooting process after basic checks rather than presenting it as a routine Bluetooth repair. Back up important local files before considering any recovery procedure, and use the instructions for the exact Chromebook model only if the manufacturer or Google support directs you there.
Check compatibility before replacing the mouse
If you need a different mouse, choose one that explicitly supports Bluetooth and read its pairing instructions before purchase. A mouse can be Bluetooth-capable yet require a particular pairing button, channel switch, or compatibility mode. Confirm that your Chromebook has Bluetooth and check the mouse maker’s compatibility information for your model or ChromeOS requirements. No Bluetooth mouse should be assumed universally compatible without those checks, and a product listing alone does not prove that a specific model has been tested with your Chromebook.
Bluetooth support is the key requirement for this setup; a mouse marketed only with a proprietary receiver is a different connection method. Check what the package actually includes and whether the mouse offers Bluetooth pairing, then keep the model instructions available for first-time setup. If you are buying a replacement because of repeated dropouts, first establish whether the original issue was charge, distance, interference, or an old saved pairing so you do not replace working hardware unnecessarily.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to contact support
Contact the mouse manufacturer when you need the model’s pairing sequence, PIN, reset method, battery diagnosis, or compatibility statement. Contact the Chromebook manufacturer when Bluetooth is absent, repeatedly fails with multiple known-good devices, or continues to fail after the documented steps. Give support the Chromebook model, ChromeOS version if available, mouse model, whether Bluetooth appears in the status area, and the exact point of failure (not listed, will not connect, or disconnects). This information lets support distinguish a pairing-mode mistake from a hardware or compatibility problem.
Google’s guidance is to contact the Bluetooth device’s manufacturer or the Chromebook manufacturer when Bluetooth problems remain after troubleshooting. The relevant support paths are Fix hardware and system problems and Connect your Chromebook to Bluetooth devices.
