The Magic Keyboard for iPad Air does not pair through Bluetooth. Open the keyboard, set its viewing angle, and place a compatible iPad Air on the magnetic connector with the rear camera lenses aligned to the keyboard cutout. The iPad connects immediately; the keyboard has no separate power switch and does not need its own battery charge.
How do I pair my Magic Keyboard to my iPad Air?
There is no Bluetooth pairing screen, pairing code, or manual switch to find. The connection is made through the keyboard’s magnetic Smart Connector. Once the iPad is seated correctly, you can type or use the trackpad.
Use this sequence:
- Verify that your iPad Air model is supported. On the iPad, open Settings > General > About and read Model Name.
- Put the keyboard on a flat, stable surface with the hinge facing away from you and the Apple logo facing upward.
- Open the lid and tilt it to the viewing angle you want. Stop when it reaches a comfortable position or resists further opening.
- Place the iPad onto the keyboard. Align the iPad’s rear camera lenses with the cutout at the upper-left corner of the keyboard. The magnets should pull the tablet into place.
- Type on the keyboard or move your finger on the trackpad. If the iPad is asleep, press any key to wake it; press another key to display the Lock Screen.
If the iPad does not respond after these steps, leave it attached while you work through the compatibility, software, contact-cleaning, and case checks below.

Apple Support states that Magic Keyboard for iPad Air requires iPadOS 18.3 or later. Check the installed version at Settings > General > Software Update. Install an available update before diagnosing a connection problem; an older system can prevent the accessory from working even when the physical fit appears correct.
Set the keyboard up for comfortable use
Position the base
Use a flat surface so the hinge and magnets remain aligned. Place the hinge at the far side of the keyboard, not toward your body, and keep the Apple logo on top. This orientation gives the lid room to open and keeps the camera cutout in the expected position.
Choose the viewing angle
Open the lid gradually and tilt it until the screen is easy to read. The hinge is designed to hold the angle, so do not force it past the point where it resists. Adjust the display before attaching or removing the iPad if you need a substantially different position.

Seat the iPad
Hold the iPad by its sides and bring its rear camera lenses toward the cutout at the keyboard’s upper-left corner. Lower the tablet onto the magnetic area rather than sliding it across the surface. A correctly aligned iPad should remain attached when you release it and should let the keyboard and trackpad respond without a Bluetooth prompt.
Wake and lock the iPad
When the iPad is asleep on the keyboard, pressing any key wakes it. A further keypress brings up the Lock Screen, where you can authenticate normally. This behavior is separate from pairing: the keyboard can wake the iPad because it is already connected through the Smart Connector.
Why won’t my Magic Keyboard connect to my iPad Air?
Work through Apple’s recommended sequence in order. Each step rules out a different cause, from an incompatible model to a blocked electrical contact.

- Confirm the model. Recheck Settings > General > About > Model Name against the supported iPad Air list. If the model or size is different, the magnets and connector may not line up even if the tablet can rest on the case.
- Check iPadOS. Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest available version. Magic Keyboard for iPad Air needs iPadOS 18.3 or later.
- Remove another case or cover. Take off any separate iPad case, folio, or cover before attaching the tablet. Extra material can hold the iPad far enough away from the Smart Connector that the keyboard cannot establish contact.
- Inspect alignment. Detach the iPad and reseat it with the rear camera lenses directly over the keyboard cutout. Make sure the tablet is not shifted sideways or sitting at an angle.
- Clean the Smart Connector. Disconnect the keyboard. Using a soft, lint-free cloth, gently clean the Smart Connector on the keyboard and the corresponding connector area on the back or edge of the iPad. Do not introduce liquid or abrasive material into the contacts.
- Reconnect. Place the iPad back on the keyboard after cleaning and removing the extra cover. Test both a keypress and the trackpad.
- Restart the iPad. If the keyboard still does not respond, restart the iPad and attach it again after the restart completes.
If the keyboard works intermittently
Intermittent typing or pointer response usually warrants repeating the physical checks rather than searching for a Bluetooth setting. Remove the iPad, inspect for debris, clean both connector areas with the lint-free cloth, and reseat the tablet so the camera lenses and cutout are aligned. Test on a flat surface with no third-party case attached.
If there is no on-screen pairing prompt
No prompt is expected. This accessory does not use a separate Bluetooth pairing procedure. A successful connection is indicated by working keys and trackpad after the iPad is magnetically attached.
Does Magic Keyboard for iPad Air need to be charged?
No. Apple’s setup guidance says that after the iPad is connected, you do not need to pair, turn on, or charge the Magic Keyboard. The keyboard draws the operating power it needs from the attached iPad through the Smart Connector.

You can charge the iPad in either of two ways:
- Connect a USB-C charging cable directly to the iPad.
- Connect the USB-C charging cable to the USB-C port on the keyboard.
The keyboard’s USB-C port passes power to the iPad but does not transmit data. It therefore cannot serve as a connection for a USB-C mouse, storage device, or other USB input accessory. Use the iPad’s own USB-C port when you need a data connection.

Using the keyboard and trackpad together
The keys and trackpad are part of the same Smart Connector accessory. You do not configure them as separate Bluetooth devices. After attachment, test a normal letter key, the trackpad pointer, and a two-finger gesture if you enabled Two Finger Secondary Click.
Buying the correct Magic Keyboard for iPad Air
Check the exact Model Name and screen size before ordering. Apple’s US keyboard selection page lists Magic Keyboard for iPad Air for the 11-inch and 13-inch M2, M3, and M4 iPad Air models, as well as the fourth- and fifth-generation iPad Air. Do not assume that a listing labeled simply “iPad Air” fits every generation.
Apple’s US product page listed the Magic Keyboard for iPad Air from $269 when checked on October 13, 2026. That is a listed starting price for the US page at that time; price and availability can change.
