To register an LG Magic Remote, turn on the TV, wait about 20 seconds, point the remote at the screen, and press the scroll wheel (OK). LG says a confirmation message should appear when pairing succeeds. If the remote was paired before, its reset and re-pair buttons depend on the remote generation, so check the TV and remote model before using a button combination.
Register a Magic Remote for the first time
- Install working batteries in the remote.
- Turn on the LG TV and wait about 20 seconds, as LG’s current US pairing guide directs.
- Point the remote toward the TV.
- Press the scroll wheel, labeled Wheel or OK on some remotes.
- Wait for the on-screen registration confirmation. LG says the remote should pair automatically and show a message when registration succeeds.
If registration does not complete, turn the TV off and back on, then try the wheel-button step again. The AN-MR500 owner manual gives this power-cycle advice. Use the manual for your exact TV if its instructions differ; steps can vary by model.
Reconnect a remote that was already paired
Reset combinations are not universal. Identify the remote model or generation and check its manual before choosing a sequence. LG’s US support pages describe these different procedures:

When the TV displays an unpairing message, press Wheel (OK) to register again.
- 2021 and 2025 models: LG’s current guide says to hold HOME and SETTINGS together for at least five seconds, then follow the on-screen registration instructions.
- 2020 models: Hold Guide until the TV displays instructions, then follow them.
- Older AN-MR500 remote: Its manual says to hold BACK and Home for five seconds to deregister, then press Wheel (OK) to register again.
These sequences come from LG’s current pairing guide, its remote troubleshooting guidance, and the AN-MR500 manual. The button layout and TV era matter; do not combine these steps or assume one sequence works on every Magic Remote.

Fix a missing pointer
A missing pointer does not always mean the remote is unpaired. LG lists depleted batteries, an unsupported remote, Audio Guidance, a lost connection, wireless interference, a temporary system issue, and hardware trouble as possible causes.
If no remote buttons work
Replace the batteries first. Then turn the TV off and on and register the remote using the procedure for its model.

If power and volume work but the pointer does not

- 2020 and earlier, webOS 5.0 or earlier: Settings → All Settings → Accessibility → Audio Guidance off.
Menu labels may vary by model. If turning Audio Guidance off does not restore the pointer, reset and pair the remote again using the relevant model-specific sequence.

If the pointer still does not respond
Move potential sources of wireless interference away from the TV and remote, and check for obstacles. LG’s pointer guide suggests keeping a Wi-Fi router at least 20 cm from the TV; the AN-MR500 manual instead advises placing a router more than 1 m away and describes that remote’s operating range as 10 m. These are document- and model-specific figures, not one universal distance rule; follow the manual for your equipment.
Check compatibility before replacing the remote
Not every Magic Remote works with every LG TV. For example, LG UK lists the 2025 AI Magic Remote model AKB76046801 as compatible only with 2023, 2024, and 2025 model-year LG TVs, and cautions that some listed features may not apply to the 2023 and 2024 TVs. Check your exact TV model against the replacement remote’s compatibility list or manual before buying. A replacement is worth considering if the original is missing, damaged, or unsupported—not as the first response to a pairing problem.

Voice features have separate requirements
Basic registration with Wheel (OK) does not require the internet or an LG account according to the cited pairing instructions. Voice recognition may require an internet connection. If voice commands fail after pairing, LG also advises checking that you are signed in to your LG account, have accepted the voice-recognition terms, and have selected an appropriate menu language for your region.
Leave a TV factory reset until last
A TV reset can erase installed apps, account sign-ins, Wi-Fi passwords, channel settings, and other saved information. Try batteries, compatibility checks, Audio Guidance settings, interference reduction, and the model-appropriate re-pairing steps first. LG provides different reset-menu paths for different TV eras, so use the instructions for your exact model rather than a single generic path.
