To pair a DualSense controller with a PS5 for the first time, turn on the console, connect the controller with a USB cable, and press the PS button. The light bar should blink, then the player indicator should illuminate. After the controller has enough charge, disconnect the cable and play wirelessly.
What you need before pairing
First-time pairing requires three things:
- A powered-on PS5 console.
- The DualSense controller you want to use.
- A USB cable that supports the controller connection. Sony’s setup guidance says to use the cable supplied with the console. If that cable is missing or unusable, use a compatible replacement that supports data, not only charging.
The controller does not need to be fully charged before setup. The USB connection both establishes the console pairing and supplies power. Once the controller has enough charge, you can remove the cable for wireless play.
For a first pairing, start with the wired procedure below. Sony documents a separate wireless Bluetooth procedure for adding another controller when one controller is already paired and working; that method is covered later.

- Turn on the PS5. The console must be running before you begin the initial setup.
- Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with a USB cable. Use the cable included with the console when available. Insert one end into the controller and the other into a USB port on the console.
- Press the PS button. If the controller is off, pressing PS starts the pairing process over the cable.
- Watch the controller lights. Sony describes a blinking light bar followed by an illuminated player indicator as the pairing feedback.
- Wait for the connection to complete. Do not unplug the cable while the light bar is still indicating that the process is in progress.
- Disconnect the cable after the controller has enough charge. The DualSense can then be used wirelessly with that PS5.
The first time you use a controller, pairing is required. The DualSense manual states: “The first time you use the controller, you’ll need to pair it with your PS5 console.”
How to confirm that pairing worked
The most useful confirmation is the light sequence, not merely the fact that the controller is receiving power. During pairing, the light bar blinks. When the console accepts the controller, the player indicator lights up. This is the feedback Sony identifies for a completed connection.
- Light bar blinking: the controller is signaling during the pairing process.
- Player indicator illuminated: the console has completed the pairing response described by Sony.
- Wireless play after unplugging: once the controller has sufficient charge, removing the cable should leave it available for normal wireless use.
If the controller stops responding as soon as you remove the cable, reconnect it and repeat the wired setup. A cable that supplies power but does not carry data can also prevent pairing, which is why Sony’s supplied cable is the safest first choice.
Use the controller wirelessly after setup
After the wired pairing has completed and the battery has enough charge, disconnect the USB cable. Press the PS button when you want to wake the controller for use with the paired PS5. Keep the cable available if the controller needs charging or if you need to repeat setup after a connection problem.
Wireless use does not change the one-console pairing rule: a DualSense controller can be paired with only one PS5 console at a time. If you move it to a different PS5, you must pair it with that console. Pairing it to another console is not the same as adding a second controller to the original console.
Understand the buttons and indicators
The PS button is the control used after connecting the cable for initial setup. The Create and PS buttons have a different purpose in Sony’s additional-controller procedure: hold them together on the second controller until its light bar blinks. Do not substitute that combination for the first wired setup when no controller is working with the console.
The light bar and player indicator provide the visible status Sony specifies. A blinking light bar means the controller is signaling during the process; the player indicator lighting afterward is the useful confirmation that the console accepted it. If you see only charging activity and no pairing sequence, check the cable and repeat the steps instead of assuming the connection is complete.
Add a second controller without a USB setup
Sony provides a wireless route for adding another controller when one DualSense is already paired and working. This procedure uses the working controller to open the PS5’s Bluetooth Accessories screen.

- Disconnect any USB cable from the second controller. The additional controller should be handled wirelessly for this procedure.
- Turn off the second controller’s player indicator. If its indicator is lit, hold the PS button until it turns off.
- Open the Bluetooth device list on the PS5. Using the already paired controller, go to Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
- Put the second DualSense into pairing mode. Hold the Create button and the PS button together until the light bar begins to blink.
- Select the second controller on the PS5 screen. Choose it from the list of available Bluetooth accessories.
- Check the completion lights. The second controller’s light bar blinks and its player indicator lights up when pairing finishes.
This method is useful when one controller is already operational and you want to add another without interrupting the first controller’s connection. Sony documents it specifically for an additional controller; the initial setup instructions remain the USB procedure above.
Which pairing method should you use?
| Situation | Recommended procedure | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| First time using the DualSense with this PS5 | Connect it by USB, press PS, and wait for the light confirmation | Powered-on PS5 and a USB cable |
| Re-establishing a connection after a failure | Turn off the PS5, reset the controller if necessary, reconnect with the official USB cable, and press PS | PS5, USB cable, and a pin or similar tool if a reset is required |
| Adding another controller while one already works | Use Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories, then hold Create + PS on the second controller | One working controller and the second DualSense |
| Moving the controller to another PS5 | Pair it with the other console; one controller is paired with one PS5 at a time | The other PS5 and a USB cable for the initial setup |
The table reflects Sony’s two documented connection paths. The wireless Bluetooth Accessories procedure is an option for an additional controller when a working controller is available; Sony’s instructions do not establish it as a replacement for the initial wired pairing requirement.
Charging while the controller is connected
The included cable can charge the DualSense while the PS5 is turned on or in rest mode. Charging in rest mode depends on enabling the relevant charging feature in the console’s settings. If the controller charges while the console is on but not in rest mode, check that setting before treating the behavior as a pairing fault.

A controller may receive power from a cable without completing a data connection, so a charging-only cable is not a dependable pairing cable. For setup and troubleshooting, use the supplied cable or a compatible data cable.
Cable and connection checks
A replacement cable is appropriate only if it matches the controller and console ports and supports data transfer. The official guidance names the supplied cable rather than endorsing a particular third-party model, so treat generic replacement listings cautiously: a cable advertised only for charging may light the controller without allowing the PS5 to recognize it.
Firmly reconnect both ends before pressing PS again. If a replacement cable fails, switch back to the supplied cable when possible. The goal is to eliminate the cable as a variable before resetting the controller. No separate wireless setup is needed for the first pairing when the wired procedure succeeds.

Start with the least disruptive checks, then use Sony’s reset procedure if the connection still fails.

The light bar never shows the expected sequence
Sony’s described pairing feedback is a blinking light bar followed by an illuminated player indicator. If you do not see that sequence, disconnect and reconnect the controller, then repeat the wired steps. A controller that is already assigned to another PS5 may also need to be paired with this console again, because one DualSense pairs with one PS5 at a time.
The controller works only while the cable is attached
Leave it connected long enough to gain charge, then disconnect it. If it immediately stops responding, reconnect it and repeat the pairing process. Replace a suspect cable with the supplied cable or another compatible data cable; a cable that only provides power cannot complete the required data exchange.
You are trying to add a second controller
Do not start by removing the working controller. Keep the first controller connected, open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories, and put the second controller into pairing mode by holding Create and PS until its light bar blinks. Make sure the second controller’s player indicator is off before beginning.

Reset the controller when pairing still fails
Sony’s next troubleshooting step is a hardware reset followed by USB pairing. A reset is appropriate when the normal wired sequence has not restored the connection.
- Turn off the PS5.
- Disconnect the controller from USB.
- Find the small reset button on the back of the DualSense.
- Press and hold the reset button for at least five seconds. Use a pin or a similar thin tool; Sony does not describe the reset tool as an included accessory.
- Reconnect the controller using the official USB cable.
- Turn on the PS5 and press PS.
- Look for the blinking light bar and illuminated player indicator.
The reset step clears the controller’s immediate connection state; it does not remove the need to pair it with the console again. Treat the USB reconnection and PS-button press as part of the same recovery procedure.
Update the console if the problem persists
If resetting and reconnecting do not solve the problem, and you can operate the console with another controller, Sony recommends updating the PS5 system software. Menu labels and firmware behavior can change over time, so use the current wording shown on the console rather than relying on an older screenshot or guide.
When the controller still cannot pair after the reset, official USB reconnection, and available system-software update, Sony directs users to its support and repairs options. Have the controller, cable, and console information available when following that support path so you can describe which light behavior occurred and which recovery steps were completed.

A single PS5 supports up to four controllers at the same time. Each controller is assigned its own player indicator after pairing. The limit applies to simultaneous controllers on that console; it does not mean that one DualSense can remain paired with several PS5 consoles at once. Each individual controller is paired with one PS5 at a time.

For a group session, pair the first controller by USB if it has not been used with that console before. Once one controller is working, add the remaining controllers through the Bluetooth Accessories procedure, one at a time. This avoids confusing the initial wired setup with the documented wireless method for additional controllers.
Moving a DualSense between PS5 consoles
When a controller has been used with another PS5, connect it to the new console with a USB cable and press PS to pair it there. The one-console-at-a-time rule means that pairing it with the new PS5 is the required step; simply pressing PS away from the original console does not establish a second simultaneous pairing.
After the new console accepts the controller and the player indicator lights, let it charge if needed, then disconnect the cable for wireless use. If the new console does not recognize it, follow the reset procedure and reconnect with the official cable.

- Starting wirelessly on a first setup: use the USB method first. The Bluetooth Accessories route is documented for adding another controller while one is already working.
- Using a charging-only cable: power alone may not provide the data connection required for pairing.
- Unplugging too early: wait for the blinking light-bar sequence and illuminated player indicator before removing the cable.
- Leaving the second controller active: when adding an additional controller, turn off its player indicator before holding Create and PS.
- Resetting without reconnecting: the reset button is only one part of recovery; reconnect by USB and press PS afterward.
- Assuming one controller can stay paired to multiple PS5 consoles: pair it again whenever you move it to another console.
Quick pairing checklist
- Power on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense with the supplied or compatible USB data cable.
- Press PS.
- Wait for the light bar to blink and the player indicator to illuminate.
- Leave the cable attached until the controller has enough charge.
- Disconnect the cable and test wireless play.
- If it fails, turn off the PS5, reset the controller for at least five seconds, reconnect with the official cable, and press PS again.
That sequence covers first-time setup and the standard recovery path. For a second controller, use the already paired controller to open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories, then hold Create and PS on the additional DualSense until it appears.

Pair controllers individually and watch the player indicators after each successful connection. The PS5 supports up to four controllers simultaneously, but each DualSense still has its own one-console pairing state. If a controller was previously used on another PS5, treat it as a controller being moved to a new console and use the USB setup rather than assuming it will appear automatically.
When adding the second, third, or fourth controller, leave the already paired controller available for navigation. The Bluetooth Accessories screen is opened from that working controller, and each additional DualSense must be put into pairing mode separately with Create and PS. This is more reliable than disconnecting the first controller and trying to start every controller at once.
When a cable is unavailable
The documented first-time procedure requires a USB connection, so obtain a compatible data cable before attempting initial setup. A wireless pairing attempt from a controller that has not been paired to that PS5 is not established by Sony’s initial instructions. If one controller is already working, the second-controller Bluetooth procedure can avoid using a cable for that additional controller.
If you buy a replacement, verify the connector fit for both the DualSense and the PS5 and look for explicit data support. Sony does not identify a particular replacement brand or tested model. The supplied cable remains the simplest reference point for setup and for troubleshooting a suspected cable problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I pair a PS5 controller for the first time?
Turn on the PS5, connect the DualSense with the supplied USB cable, and press PS. Wait for the light bar to blink and the player indicator to illuminate. Once the controller has enough charge, disconnect the cable for wireless use.
Can I pair a DualSense without a USB cable?
For first-time pairing, Sony’s documented procedure uses USB. A separate wireless Bluetooth Accessories procedure is available for an additional controller when another controller is already paired and working: open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories, then hold Create and PS on the second controller.

Why does my PS5 controller charge but not pair?
Charging does not prove that the cable carries data. Reconnect the controller and use the supplied cable, or a compatible replacement explicitly supporting data. Press PS while the PS5 is on and look for the blinking light bar followed by the illuminated player indicator.
How do I pair a second DualSense?
Keep the first controller working, disconnect any USB cable from the second, and turn off the second controller’s player indicator if necessary. On the PS5, open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories. Hold Create and PS on the second controller until its light bar blinks, then select it on screen.
How many controllers can one PS5 use at once?
Sony says a PS5 can use up to four controllers simultaneously. Each controller receives its own player indicator. The four-controller limit does not allow one individual DualSense to remain paired with multiple PS5 consoles at the same time.
What should I do if the controller still will not connect?
Turn off the PS5, disconnect the controller, and hold the small reset button on its back for at least five seconds with a pin or similar tool. Reconnect it with the official USB cable, turn on the PS5, and press PS. If it still fails, update the console software when possible and use Sony’s support or repairs options.
Can I move my DualSense from one PS5 to another?
Yes, but a controller pairs with one PS5 at a time. Connect it to the other, powered-on PS5 with a USB cable and press PS. After the light sequence confirms the new pairing, allow it to charge and disconnect the cable for wireless play.
Does charging in rest mode affect pairing?
The included cable can charge the controller while the PS5 is on or in rest mode. Charging in rest mode depends on the console’s charging setting being enabled. This affects charging availability, not the basic USB pairing sequence.
The Bottom Line
For a first-time connection, turn on the PS5, use a data-capable USB cable, press PS, and wait for the blinking light bar followed by the illuminated player indicator. Disconnect only after the controller has enough charge. Add later controllers through Bluetooth Accessories with a working controller, and use Sony’s five-second reset followed by official USB reconnection when pairing fails.
