Put the speaker into Bluetooth pairing (also called discovery) mode, open Bluetooth settings on your phone or computer, and select the speaker when it appears. For a TV, first verify that the model supports Bluetooth audio, then choose the speaker from the TV’s sound-output menu. Pairing saves the relationship between devices; selecting the speaker as the active audio output is what sends sound to it.

The button used to enter pairing mode and the menu names on a television vary by model. If the controls described below do not match your equipment, use the speaker or TV manual to identify the equivalent setting.

What you need before pairing

Have the speaker powered on and close to the device you want to use. The speaker must be discoverable before it can appear in a Bluetooth device list. Most speakers enter this state with a Bluetooth or pairing button, but the exact control is model-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Speaker: Turn it on and activate pairing mode. A status light or sound commonly indicates that it is discoverable, but the indicator pattern differs by model.
  • Host device: Turn Bluetooth on in the phone, laptop, or TV settings.
  • Proximity: Keep the speaker near the host while pairing. Apple recommends keeping an iPhone within about 33 feet (10 meters) of the Bluetooth accessory during pairing; this is a setup distance, not a guaranteed real-world range.
  • Competing connections: If the speaker is already connected to another phone or computer, disconnect it there or return it to pairing mode before trying the intended host.

Bluetooth pairing and Bluetooth connection are related but not identical. Pairing stores the device so it can be recognized later. Afterward, the host may reconnect automatically, but you may still need to choose the speaker as the current audio output.

Pairing mode is not the same as ordinary power

A powered speaker can remain invisible if it is not advertising itself as available for a new connection. Look for the speaker’s Bluetooth indicator or listen for its pairing tone. If it was paired previously, pressing the Bluetooth control again may be necessary to make it discoverable. The manual is the reliable way to identify the timing, button, or indicator pattern for that model.

Keep the first setup simple

Place the speaker where you can see its status light and keep the phone, laptop, or TV nearby. Pairing at close range makes it easier to tell whether a missing device is caused by discovery mode, an existing connection, or distance. After the connection works, you can move the speaker to its normal listening position and test the range.

Pair a Bluetooth speaker with an iPhone

  1. Put the speaker into discovery mode using its Bluetooth or pairing control. Check the speaker instructions if you cannot identify the control.
  2. On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth.
  3. Turn Bluetooth on if it is off.
  4. Wait for the speaker’s name to appear under the available devices list, then tap it.
  5. If the iPhone asks for a PIN or passcode, enter the code supplied in the speaker’s instructions. Do not assume a universal code.

When the speaker appears as connected, start audio playback and confirm that the speaker is the selected output. If it is paired but the iPhone continues using its built-in speaker, open the audio-output chooser in the app or system controls and select the Bluetooth speaker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the speaker does not appear on iPhone

  • Confirm that the speaker is actually in pairing mode rather than merely powered on.
  • Move the iPhone and speaker closer together, staying within roughly 33 feet (10 meters) while pairing.
  • Check whether the speaker is still connected to another host and disconnect it there.
  • Use the speaker’s manual to repeat its discovery procedure, then return to Settings > Bluetooth and look again.

If the speaker name is listed under previously connected devices but is not active, tap it to request a connection. If it remains unavailable, put the speaker back into discovery mode rather than repeatedly tapping a stale entry.

Pair a Bluetooth speaker with an Android phone

Android menu wording varies by handset and software version. Google’s current instructions note that some steps require Android 15 or newer or supported hardware.

  1. Put the speaker into pairing mode.
  2. Swipe down from the top of the screen and touch and hold the Bluetooth control, or open the phone’s Bluetooth settings directly.
  3. Choose Pair new device. Some phones show an available-devices list immediately or provide a refresh control instead.
  4. Tap the speaker’s name when it appears.
  5. Complete any on-screen confirmation. If a passcode is requested and the speaker’s code is unknown, use the code specified by the accessory documentation; a generic code is not guaranteed.

Reconnect an Android phone later

Android distinguishes saved devices from the device that is currently connected. Turn Bluetooth on and select the speaker under saved devices if it does not reconnect automatically. Then check the phone’s media-output control if sound is still coming from the handset.

A saved entry confirms that the phone remembers the speaker; it does not prove that audio is routed to it at this moment. Check both the Bluetooth status and the media-output selector before deleting and pairing the device again.

Pair a Bluetooth speaker with a Windows laptop

Windows pairing requires Bluetooth support in the laptop. Many Windows computers include it. If yours does not, Microsoft says, “A USB Bluetooth adapter can be plugged into a USB port on the Windows device to add Bluetooth.” The adapter must be compatible with your Windows installation.

Windows version Pairing path What to select
Windows 11 Taskbar Quick Settings Bluetooth control > Manage Bluetooth devices, or Settings > Bluetooth & devices Select the speaker under new devices and follow the prompts
Windows 10 Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth Select the discoverable speaker and complete the prompts

Windows 11 steps

  1. Turn on the speaker and place it in pairing mode.
  2. Open the taskbar’s Quick Settings and turn Bluetooth on.
  3. Choose Manage Bluetooth devices. You can also open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  4. Find the speaker in the list of new devices and select it.
  5. Accept any confirmation prompt.

After pairing, open Windows’ sound controls and make the Bluetooth speaker the output device. Pairing alone does not guarantee that Windows has switched playback from the laptop’s internal speakers.

Windows 10 steps

  1. Put the speaker into discoverable mode.
  2. Open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
  3. Choose Add Bluetooth or other device, select Bluetooth, and wait for the speaker to appear.
  4. Select the speaker and finish the prompts.
  5. Choose the speaker as the active output in Windows sound controls.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The Bluetooth menu can still be present on an existing installation, but a supported operating-system upgrade is a separate maintenance decision from pairing the speaker.

If Windows cannot find the speaker

Verify that Bluetooth is enabled, the speaker is discoverable, and the devices are close together. Microsoft notes that discovery settings can affect whether devices appear. If Bluetooth hardware is absent, use a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter rather than repeatedly searching for a device the laptop cannot detect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When using an adapter, plug it into the laptop before opening the Bluetooth controls and allow Windows to recognize it. The adapter adds Bluetooth hardware; it does not remove the need to put the speaker into pairing mode or to select it as the sound output afterward.

Connect a Bluetooth speaker to a TV

Televisions differ more than phones and laptops. A TV may include Bluetooth for remotes or other accessories without supporting Bluetooth audio output, so the presence of a Bluetooth menu does not by itself prove that a speaker can be used for sound. Check the TV’s specifications or model manual, or look for a Bluetooth audio-device list in its sound-output settings.

Samsung TV example

  1. Put the speaker into pairing mode.
  2. On many Samsung models, open Settings > Sound > Sound Output > Bluetooth Speaker List.
  3. Select the speaker from the list and confirm the connection.
  4. Start playback and verify that the selected sound output is the Bluetooth speaker.

Samsung provides different menu variants for different model years, so the labels and path may not match your set exactly. If there is no Bluetooth speaker list, consult the model-specific manual or specifications before concluding that the TV lacks the feature.

How to check TV compatibility before buying an adapter

  1. Find the exact TV model number, usually on the rear label or in the television’s information menu.
  2. Look for Bluetooth audio output, Bluetooth speakers, or a similar phrase in the manual or specifications.
  3. Open the sound-output settings and look for a device list specifically for audio, not only a Bluetooth remote or keyboard setting.
  4. If audio output is unsupported, inspect the physical ports before choosing a transmitter.

This check prevents a common mismatch: a TV can communicate with a Bluetooth remote while offering no way to transmit program sound to a Bluetooth speaker.

TVs without Bluetooth audio

For a TV that does not support Bluetooth audio, Samsung identifies a Bluetooth adapter as an option when the television has a compatible 3.5 mm or standard left/right AUX or RCA audio output. The adapter must match a port that is actually present on the TV and must be designed to transmit audio to a Bluetooth speaker. A TV with only incompatible outputs cannot use this particular workaround without additional hardware.

Check whether the selected output is active when the adapter is connected. Port behavior differs by television, so follow the adapter and TV instructions for choosing headphone, AUX, or analog output. An adapter is a hardware workaround, not evidence that the television’s built-in Bluetooth supports speakers.

TV-specific limitations

  • Compatibility: The TV and speaker may not work together even when both advertise Bluetooth.
  • Distance and obstacles: Walls, furniture, and the physical distance between the TV and speaker can contribute to dropouts.
  • Radio interference: Nearby wireless equipment can affect stability.
  • Lip-sync delay: Audio may arrive slightly after the picture. Samsung lists lip-sync errors as a possible Bluetooth-TV issue, not an inevitable result.

TV use therefore involves more decisions than phone pairing: support for Bluetooth audio, the correct output menu, the speaker’s compatibility, and whether a small delay is acceptable for films, games, or live programming.

Pairing versus connecting: why a paired speaker may stay silent

A paired speaker is remembered by the host, but “paired” does not always mean “currently connected.” A phone or laptop can save several accessories and connect to only one active audio output. A TV may likewise remember a speaker while continuing to send sound through its internal speakers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the host device’s Bluetooth settings and confirm that the speaker status is Connected, not merely Saved, Paired, or Previously connected.
  2. Open the sound or media-output controls.
  3. Select the Bluetooth speaker as the active output.
  4. Play audio briefly to verify the result.

If another phone or computer has taken the connection, disconnect the speaker from that host or place the speaker back into pairing mode before selecting it on the intended device. Do not assume that every speaker supports simultaneous connections or multipoint; that capability is model-dependent.

Why repeating pairing may not help

Re-pairing does not fix an output-selection problem. If the host says Connected but sound remains on its built-in speakers, inspect the audio-output control first. Conversely, if the speaker is only saved and cannot become connected, return it to discovery mode and remove the competing host from the immediate setup. Keep the distinction between a remembered relationship and an active sound path in mind.

Troubleshoot the most common pairing problems

The speaker is missing from the device list

  1. Turn the speaker off and on, then explicitly activate pairing mode.
  2. Check that Bluetooth is enabled on the phone, laptop, or TV.
  3. Move the host and speaker close together and remove obvious obstacles during setup.
  4. Disconnect the speaker from another nearby phone or computer.
  5. Refresh or reopen the host’s available-device list.
  6. Use the speaker manual to confirm the correct pairing control and indicator.

On Windows, also check discovery-related settings. If the laptop has no Bluetooth hardware, install a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter.

The device says paired, but there is no sound

  1. Open Bluetooth settings and confirm that the speaker is connected.
  2. Open the audio-output selector and choose the speaker manually.
  3. Check the speaker’s own volume and the host device’s volume.
  4. On a TV, return to the sound-output menu and select the Bluetooth speaker rather than the internal TV speakers.

The speaker keeps connecting to the wrong device

Turn Bluetooth off temporarily on the other nearby phone or computer, or disconnect the speaker from that host. Then put the speaker into pairing mode and select it from the intended device. Because simultaneous-connection behavior differs by model, a speaker that remembers several hosts may still choose only one for active playback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The TV has Bluetooth but does not list the speaker

Confirm that the TV supports Bluetooth audio output, not merely Bluetooth accessories such as a remote. Check the model manual or specifications and look for a Bluetooth speaker list under sound output. If the feature is absent, identify whether the TV has a compatible 3.5 mm or left/right AUX/RCA output for a Bluetooth transmitter adapter.

TV sound drops out or is out of sync

  • Reduce the distance between the TV and speaker.
  • Remove furniture or other obstacles that sit between them.
  • Move potential sources of radio interference away from the TV or speaker.
  • Check compatibility between the specific TV model and speaker.
  • If the delay remains, use a wired audio path or another output supported by the TV when low latency is more important than wireless placement.

Samsung describes these as possible causes of TV Bluetooth problems. Their presence does not mean every Bluetooth-TV setup will experience dropouts or lip-sync error.

When to stop troubleshooting

If the speaker never appears after you confirm discovery mode, close range, Bluetooth support, and competing connections, consult the exact speaker and host manuals. A TV that lacks Bluetooth audio requires a compatible transmitter and matching output; repeatedly searching its menus cannot add that capability. Likewise, a laptop without Bluetooth needs hardware such as a compatible USB adapter before it can discover the speaker.

Phones and laptops generally expose pairing directly in their operating-system Bluetooth settings. TVs require an additional capability check because a Bluetooth-enabled television is not necessarily a Bluetooth-audio television.

Which path is simplest?

A phone is usually the quickest test because its Bluetooth settings expose nearby accessories directly. A Windows laptop follows the same basic pattern but may need built-in Bluetooth or a USB adapter. A TV needs the most preparation: confirm audio support, locate the model-specific sound-output menu, and decide whether possible latency is acceptable. If the TV fails that support check, compare the cost and practicality of a compatible transmitter with using a wired speaker or another supported audio output.

What successful pairing looks like

  • The speaker appears in the host’s Bluetooth list after you place it in discovery mode.
  • The host reports a connected status after you select the speaker.
  • The speaker is selected as the active audio output.
  • Playback comes from the speaker without unexpected dropouts at the intended distance.
  • On a TV, the picture and sound remain acceptably synchronized for your use case.

If any one of these conditions fails, return to the corresponding troubleshooting branch rather than repeating the entire procedure blindly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect a Bluetooth speaker to my phone?

Turn on the speaker and place it in pairing or discovery mode. Open Bluetooth settings on the iPhone or Android phone, select the speaker when it appears, and complete any requested confirmation. Then choose the speaker in the phone’s media-output control if sound does not switch automatically.

How do I pair a Bluetooth speaker with my laptop?

On Windows 11, turn on Bluetooth from Quick Settings, choose Manage Bluetooth devices, and select the speaker under new devices. On Windows 10, use Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth. After pairing, select the speaker as the Windows sound output.

How do I connect a Bluetooth speaker to my TV?

First confirm that the TV supports Bluetooth audio output. Put the speaker in pairing mode, open the TV’s sound-output settings, find its Bluetooth speaker or audio-device list, and select the speaker. Menu names vary by model; Samsung TVs commonly use Settings > Sound > Sound Output > Bluetooth Speaker List.

What do I do if my speaker isn’t showing up?

Make sure the speaker is discoverable, not merely powered on; keep it close to the host; turn Bluetooth on; disconnect it from another nearby phone or computer; and refresh the device list. If the control is unclear, follow the speaker’s manual. On Windows, verify discovery settings and confirm that the laptop has Bluetooth hardware.

Why is my speaker paired but silent?

Pairing means the host remembers the speaker. Confirm that its status is Connected and select it as the active audio output. Phones, laptops, and TVs may continue using their built-in speakers until you choose the Bluetooth speaker manually.

Can one speaker connect to several phones or computers?

A speaker may remember several hosts, but simultaneous connections and multipoint behavior vary by model. If it connects to the wrong device, disconnect it there or temporarily turn off Bluetooth on that host, then pair or reconnect it with the intended device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my TV has Bluetooth but no speaker appears?

Bluetooth support for a remote or keyboard does not guarantee Bluetooth audio output. Check the exact TV model’s manual or specifications and look for a Bluetooth audio-device list in sound settings. If audio is unsupported, a compatible transmitter can work when the TV has a suitable 3.5 mm or left/right AUX/RCA output.

How far apart should the phone and speaker be while pairing?

Apple recommends keeping an iPhone within about 33 feet (10 meters) of the Bluetooth accessory during pairing. Treat that as a setup guideline rather than a guaranteed range; walls, furniture, interference, and device compatibility can affect actual performance.

The Bottom Line

Put the speaker in discovery mode, select it in the host device’s Bluetooth settings, and then make it the active audio output. Phones and Windows laptops usually follow that direct path; TVs require a separate check for Bluetooth audio support, compatible ports, and acceptable latency.
