To pair a Bluetooth speaker, first put the speaker in its model-specific pairing or discovery mode, then open your phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the speaker. If it will not appear, connect, reconnect, or play sound, work through power, distance, stale pairings, competing devices, and audio-output checks in that order. The steps below cover current iPhone and general Android menus, while noting where a speaker’s own instructions take priority.
What you need before pairing
Have the speaker, the phone you want to use, and the speaker’s manual or model-specific support page available. Bluetooth pairing is normally built into both devices; routine setup does not require a special app, paid service, cable, or repair accessory.
- Power: Charge the speaker or connect it to power, and make sure the phone has enough battery to complete setup.
- Proximity: Keep the phone and speaker close while pairing. Apple’s current iPhone guidance says the phone should be within about 33 feet (10 meters) of the Bluetooth accessory. That is an approximate support guideline, not a guarantee in every room or through every wall.
- Pairing mode: The speaker must be discoverable. A Bluetooth button, power-button hold, or another gesture may be used, and the sequence differs by model.
- Competing connections: If the speaker has previously been used with another phone, tablet, computer, or television, that device may connect first.
Apple’s support wording is explicit: “Put your Bluetooth accessory in discovery mode. If you aren’t sure how to make it discoverable, check the instructions that came with your accessory.” Treat the speaker maker’s instructions as the authority for button presses, indicator sounds, PINs, firmware behavior, and any speaker-side reset.
Pairing mode, discovery mode, and reconnecting are different
A speaker can be powered on without being visible to a new phone. Pairing or discovery mode is the temporary state in which the speaker advertises itself to nearby devices. The button sequence, light pattern, sound, or voice prompt that confirms this state is specific to the model. If you only press the power button, the speaker may remain available to a phone it already knows while refusing a new pairing request.

After the first successful pairing, the phone normally stores the speaker as a saved or previously paired device. Selecting that entry later is a reconnection, not a new pairing. If the saved record is damaged or the speaker has been assigned to another device, you may need to forget the record on the phone and put the speaker into discovery mode again.
Pair the speaker with an iPhone
- Turn on and make the speaker discoverable. Follow the speaker’s instructions for pairing or discovery mode. A steady or flashing light, tone, or voice prompt may indicate that it is ready, but those signals are model-specific.
- Open Bluetooth settings. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and switch Bluetooth on. Stay on this screen while the phone searches.
- Select the speaker. Tap the speaker’s name when it appears under the available devices list. If several similar names appear, use the name or identifier printed in the speaker’s documentation.
- Complete verification if requested. Enter a PIN or passcode only when the iPhone asks for one. Use the code supplied by the speaker maker; do not assume that every model uses the same code.
- Choose it for playback. Start audio and, if the sound does not move automatically, select the Bluetooth speaker as the playback destination in the audio app or in Control Center.
Apple notes that changing the position or orientation of the phone and accessory can improve wireless performance. If the speaker does not show up, leave the Bluetooth screen open, move the devices close together, and follow the troubleshooting sequence below rather than repeatedly tapping an unrelated device.
Pair the speaker with an Android phone
- Put the speaker in pairing mode. Turn it on and use its documented discovery control. The phone cannot select a speaker that is powered on but not advertising itself.
- Open the Bluetooth controls. Swipe down to open Quick Settings, then touch and hold Bluetooth. Choose Pair new device. Depending on the Android version and manufacturer, the same control may appear under Available devices, a three-dot menu, or another Bluetooth settings page.
- Refresh the list if necessary. Wait for the speaker name to appear. If the page provides a refresh command, use it after confirming that the speaker is still in discovery mode.
- Tap the speaker name. Follow the on-screen pairing prompts. If a PIN is requested and the speaker’s instructions do not provide one, Google’s general Android help says common passcodes such as
0000or1234may be tried; the model’s instructions take precedence. - Reconnect later from saved devices. After successful pairing, turn on Bluetooth and select the speaker under saved or previously paired devices when you want to use it again.
Android labels and locations vary with the phone’s software version and supporting hardware. If your menus use different wording, look for the device list and the equivalent of Pair new device rather than assuming the speaker is incompatible.

Troubleshoot in this order
Changing several settings at once makes it difficult to know what fixed the problem. Use the branch that matches the symptom, beginning with the physical checks that affect every type of failure.
The speaker does not appear in the phone’s list
- Confirm power. Check that the speaker is on, charged, or connected to power. A low battery can prevent discovery even when an indicator light still works.
- Re-enter discovery mode. Turn on pairing mode again using the speaker’s instructions. Merely turning the speaker on is not enough for many models.
- Move the devices close together. For iPhone pairing, keep them within Apple’s approximate 10-meter guideline and remove unnecessary obstacles while testing.
- Refresh the phone’s list. Reopen the Bluetooth page or use Android’s refresh control. Give the speaker time to advertise its name.
- Check for another active connection. A speaker may be discoverable only briefly or may stop advertising after it connects to a previously trusted phone, tablet, computer, or television. Temporarily turn Bluetooth off on those nearby devices or unpair the speaker there, then place the speaker back in discovery mode.
- Restart both devices. Power the speaker off and on, restart the phone, and try the pairing sequence again.
If the speaker appears on another phone but never on yours after these steps, check the speaker maker’s compatibility information and model-specific instructions. Apple directs users to the manufacturer when compatibility remains uncertain.

The speaker appears, but pairing fails
- Toggle Bluetooth on the phone. Turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, turn it on again, and reopen the available-device list.
- Power-cycle the speaker. Switch it off and on, then explicitly return it to discovery mode before trying again.
- Restart the phone. A restart can clear a stalled Bluetooth process without changing your saved data.
- Remove the old record. If this phone has a previous entry for the speaker, forget or remove that entry, then pair as if the devices were new.
- Use the correct PIN. Enter a code only when prompted and follow the speaker’s documentation. On Android,
0000or1234are general possibilities when no code is supplied, not universal guarantees. - Check permissions and compatibility. On iPhone, an app that needs Bluetooth access may require permission in its settings. Confirm that the speaker supports the phone and operating-system combination; the maker can verify model-specific limitations.
Forget the speaker and pair it again
A stale pairing record can preserve an old key or device state. Remove it only when ordinary reconnection fails, because forgetting means you will need to complete pairing again.
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Find the speaker under saved or connected devices and tap the information button next to its name.
- Choose Forget This Device and confirm.
- Put the speaker back into discovery mode, then select it from the same Bluetooth screen.
On Android
- Open Bluetooth settings. You can reach them by touching and holding Bluetooth in Quick Settings.
- Open the speaker’s entry under saved or previously paired devices.
- Choose Forget, Unpair, or the equivalent command shown by that phone.
- Return the speaker to pairing mode and use Pair new device to add it again.
Some speakers also retain their own list of paired phones. The available way to clear that list is model-specific; use the maker’s instructions rather than applying a generic button combination.
The phone says “connected,” but there is no sound
A Bluetooth connection and an audio route are separate states. Check playback before deleting the pairing.
- Raise both volume controls. Increase the phone’s media volume and the speaker’s physical volume, then start playback again.
- Select the speaker as output. On iPhone, open the audio app’s destination control or Control Center and choose the speaker. On Android, open the connected accessory’s settings and make sure Media audio is turned on.
- Check the currently selected device. Another paired headset, car system, computer, or speaker may be receiving the audio instead.
- Test a different audio source. Play a locally stored recording or another app to distinguish a Bluetooth route problem from an app-specific pause, mute, or casting setting.
- Disconnect and reconnect. Select another output, select the speaker again, and retry playback. If it still remains silent, forget the pairing and set it up afresh.
The speaker used to connect but no longer does
- Check that the speaker is charged, powered on, and within practical range.
- Open the phone’s saved-device list and tap the speaker to reconnect.
- Look for a nearby device that may have taken the speaker’s connection; disconnect that device temporarily.
- If reconnection fails, forget the phone’s old entry, put the speaker into discovery mode, and pair again.
- Consult the speaker maker if its firmware, pairing-record limit, or compatibility rules may have changed. The available official guidance does not establish one universal speaker-reset procedure.
The speaker keeps connecting to the wrong device
Many speakers automatically reconnect to a previously trusted device. Turn Bluetooth off on the unwanted phone, tablet, computer, or television while pairing the intended phone. If necessary, remove the speaker from that device’s saved list, then pair it with the intended phone and restore other connections one at a time.
The connection drops or sounds unreliable
- Keep the phone and speaker closer together while testing; walls, furniture, and the way each device is oriented can affect performance.
- Check the speaker’s charge and use a stable power source if its battery is nearly empty.
- Move away from other active Bluetooth devices while diagnosing which connection is failing.
- Power-cycle both devices and reconnect from the saved-device list.
- If relocating the devices improves performance, use that arrangement in the problem room. Apple specifically notes that changing position or orientation can improve wireless performance.
When to check compatibility or contact the speaker maker
Generic phone steps cannot resolve every model-specific limitation. Contact the speaker maker when the speaker never enters discovery mode, requires an undocumented PIN, has a firmware or pairing-record problem, or is advertised as incompatible with your phone’s operating system. Also check whether the product is designed for one active connection at a time, limits the number of saved devices, or needs a documented firmware update.

What not to do
- Do not repeatedly tap a speaker name while the speaker is not in discovery mode; it will not make the accessory visible.
- Do not assume every speaker uses the same PIN, reset gesture, light pattern, or maximum number of saved devices.
- Do not delete every Bluetooth device on the phone as a first step. Forget only the problem speaker unless the phone maker specifically directs a broader reset.
- Do not buy an app, cable, new battery, or replacement speaker merely because the first pairing attempt failed.
- Do not treat “connected” as proof that audio is routed correctly; check the destination and, on Android, the Media audio switch.
A quick recovery checklist
- Speaker on and charged.
- Speaker explicitly in pairing or discovery mode.
- Phone Bluetooth enabled.
- Phone and speaker close together during setup.
- Other nearby devices temporarily disconnected.
- Available-device list refreshed.
- Old phone pairing forgotten when reconnection fails.
- Correct speaker selected as the audio destination.
- Phone volume, speaker volume, and Android Media audio setting checked.
- Both devices restarted before trying again.
- Speaker maker’s compatibility and model instructions checked if the generic sequence still fails.
These steps address the common causes without buying another product. Consider replacing the speaker only after its power, discovery mode, pairing records, compatibility, and audio routing have been checked and the maker confirms that the hardware is unsuitable or faulty.

Why can’t my phone find my Bluetooth speaker?
Make sure the speaker is charged, powered on, and explicitly in its model-specific pairing or discovery mode. Keep it close to the phone, refresh the Bluetooth list, and temporarily turn off Bluetooth on other nearby devices that may have connected to it.
What is the iPhone Bluetooth pairing distance?
Apple advises keeping an iPhone within about 33 feet (10 meters) of the Bluetooth accessory while pairing. It is an approximate guideline, and walls, furniture, and device orientation can reduce reliable performance.
How do I reconnect a speaker I already paired?
Turn on Bluetooth, open the phone’s saved or previously paired devices list, and select the speaker. If that fails, forget the old entry, put the speaker back into discovery mode, and pair it again.

Why does my phone say the speaker is connected but play sound through the phone?
A connection does not always select the audio route. Choose the speaker in the iPhone app or Control Center playback destination. On Android, open the accessory settings and confirm that Media audio is enabled, then check both volume controls.
Should I try 0000 or 1234 as the Bluetooth PIN?
Only if the speaker’s instructions do not provide a code. Google’s general Android guidance lists 0000 and 1234 as common possibilities, but the speaker maker’s documented PIN takes priority.
Why does the speaker connect to someone else’s phone?
It may be automatically reconnecting to a previously trusted device. Turn Bluetooth off on that phone, tablet, computer, or television, or remove the speaker from its saved list, then put the speaker into discovery mode and pair the intended phone.
Do I need a special app or accessory to pair a Bluetooth speaker?
Normally no. Pairing is handled by the phone’s built-in Bluetooth controls. A manufacturer app is relevant only when the maker specifically requires it for that model, and routine troubleshooting does not require buying a service, cable, or repair tool.
