To pair a Bluetooth speaker, turn it on and put it into pairing or discoverable mode using the speaker’s own controls. Then open Bluetooth settings on your phone, laptop, or tablet, select the speaker when it appears, and connect. If it connects but sound still comes from the device, select the speaker separately as the audio output. The exact button sequence for pairing mode varies by speaker, so use its manual rather than assuming a particular press or indicator pattern.
The process is much the same on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, and Mac: make the speaker available to nearby devices, select it in the source device’s Bluetooth settings, then check where audio is playing. The menu names differ, and Windows and Mac provide explicit output-selection controls in the instructions below. These steps are for connecting a speaker you already own; if you are replacing one, check that the new speaker’s specifications suit the audio setup you need.
Before you start: make the speaker discoverable
Pairing begins on the speaker. Turn it on, then use its model-specific controls to enter pairing or discoverable mode. A speaker that is powered on but not discoverable may not appear in the device list. Discoverability is the state that lets the phone, computer, or tablet find the speaker during setup; simply switching the speaker on is not necessarily enough.
Check the speaker’s manual for the right control and any indicator that confirms pairing mode. There is no universal Bluetooth-speaker button sequence: do not assume that a long press, or a particular light pattern, applies to every model. The manual is the reliable place to find the correct procedure for that speaker. If it is missing from the device list, return to this first check before changing settings on the phone or computer.

Keep the source device’s Bluetooth settings available while you make the speaker discoverable. The essential order is speaker first, source device second: put the speaker into pairing mode, enable Bluetooth on the phone or computer, and select the speaker by the name shown in the list. The same sequence applies whether the source is a phone, tablet, Windows laptop, or Mac.
Pair the speaker with an Android phone or tablet
- Turn on the speaker and put it in pairing mode using its manual.
- On the Android device, open Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Bluetooth. Menu labels and locations can differ by manufacturer and Android version, so look for the device’s Bluetooth settings if the labels on your screen are different.
- Turn Bluetooth on if it is off, then choose the speaker from the available devices.
- If the device offers a Fast Pair notification and the speaker is supported, follow the on-screen prompt to connect. Fast Pair is an option for supported devices, not a required step for every speaker.
Once connected, play audio to check that it is coming through the speaker. Choosing the speaker in the Bluetooth device list establishes the connection; it is still worth checking the result by playing sound. If the speaker connects but the audio does not come through, consult the Android device’s Bluetooth and audio controls rather than assuming the pairing step failed.
Android menu wording can vary across manufacturers and versions. If you cannot find the exact path above, search the Settings screen for Bluetooth or open the Bluetooth controls from the device’s settings. A shared tablet may allow each user to manage Bluetooth settings separately, so on a shared device the account or user currently in use may affect who can manage the connection.
Pair the speaker with an iPhone or iPad
- Turn on the speaker and put it into pairing mode, following its manual.
- On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on if needed.
- Choose the speaker when it appears in the available-device list.
If the accessory will not connect, Apple recommends trying the pairing process again. Make sure the speaker is discoverable before retrying; an iPhone or iPad cannot select a speaker that is not appearing in the available-device list. Confirm the speaker is on, use its model-specific pairing control again, and then retry from Bluetooth settings.
When retrying does not help, consider whether the speaker has an earlier saved pairing with this source device. Removing or forgetting a saved pairing and starting again can help with a previously paired accessory, though the exact controls for removal vary by platform. Apple’s cited troubleshooting guidance recommends retrying pairing; it does not give a universal speaker button sequence, so follow the speaker manual for that part.
Pair the speaker with a Windows laptop
The PC needs Bluetooth capability, and the speaker must be turned on and discoverable. If you are unsure whether the laptop has Bluetooth, check its Windows Bluetooth settings; Windows setup requires Bluetooth on the PC as well as a speaker in pairing mode. To connect it, use the Bluetooth device settings:
- Put the speaker in pairing mode using its manual.
- On the laptop, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Choose Add device, then select the speaker when it appears.
- If Windows shows a connection but no sound comes from the speaker, select the speaker in the taskbar’s Sound output selector.
After selecting the device, allow Windows to establish the connection and check audio output. The Bluetooth connection and the audio destination are separate checks: a speaker can appear connected while the laptop continues to send sound to a different output. If that happens, open the taskbar’s Sound output selector and choose the speaker.
These steps are for a supported Windows version. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; the Windows 10 end-of-support date does not change the basic Bluetooth sequence, but it matters when choosing which Windows instructions and support apply to your laptop. Use instructions for the supported Windows version installed on the PC rather than assuming every screen or menu is identical across versions.
Pair the speaker with a Mac
- Turn on the speaker and make it discoverable using its controls.
- On the Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth.
- Click Connect beside the speaker.
- If it connects but audio still plays through the Mac, open System Settings > Sound > Output and select the speaker.
Apple’s Mac instructions explicitly include speakers among Bluetooth devices that can connect. As on Windows, connecting and choosing the audio destination are not always the same action. If the Mac shows the speaker as connected but you hear sound from the Mac, go to Sound settings and select the speaker under Output.

How the steps differ by device
The overall sequence is the same across platforms: make the speaker discoverable, find it in Bluetooth settings, and connect. The menu path and the place to choose audio output differ. Android and iPhone/iPad instructions center on Bluetooth settings and selecting the accessory. Windows and Mac instructions also identify where to select an audio output if the connection is present but sound does not come through the speaker.

| Device | Bluetooth settings and connection | Where to select sound output | Removing an old pairing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android phone or tablet | Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Bluetooth; choose the speaker. Menu wording varies. Supported accessories may offer a Fast Pair notification. | The cited Google Android Help setup instructions do not specify an output-selection path. | The cited Google Android Help setup instructions do not specify a removal path. |
| iPhone or iPad | Settings > Bluetooth; choose the speaker. | The cited Apple iPhone and iPad troubleshooting instructions do not specify an output-selection path. | Apple recommends retrying pairing if an accessory will not connect; a removal path is not stated in the cited instructions. |
| Windows laptop | Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device; choose the speaker. The PC needs Bluetooth and the speaker needs to be discoverable. | Taskbar Sound output selector. | Microsoft advises unpairing and pairing again for Bluetooth audio problems; the exact removal path can depend on the Windows interface. |
| Mac | Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth; click Connect beside the speaker. | System Settings > Sound > Output. | The cited Apple Mac connection instructions do not specify a removal path. |
This comparison is about where the documented controls are, not whether one platform is inherently easier or more reliable. The important practical difference is where to look if a speaker pairs but does not play audio: Windows and Mac provide the output-selection locations above, while the Android and iPhone/iPad setup instructions focus on pairing through Bluetooth settings.
Troubleshoot a speaker that will not appear or connect
The speaker is missing from the device list
- Confirm that the speaker is on and in discoverable pairing mode, not merely powered on.
- Follow the speaker manual’s pairing instructions; controls differ by model.
- On Windows, confirm that the PC has Bluetooth capability. Windows setup also requires the speaker to be discoverable.
Start with the speaker because discoverability is a prerequisite on both Windows and Mac. If it is not discoverable, toggling through source-device menus will not make it appear. Once the speaker is in pairing mode, reopen or revisit the source device’s Bluetooth settings and look for its displayed name. If it still does not appear, check the manual again for the model-specific pairing procedure before assuming a platform fault.
The speaker was paired before but will not connect now
Remove or forget the saved pairing on the source device, then put the speaker back into pairing mode and pair again. Microsoft includes unpairing and re-pairing in its Bluetooth audio troubleshooting guidance. Apple recommends retrying the pairing process when an iPhone or iPad accessory will not connect. The exact controls for removing a saved device vary by platform.
Pairing again means following the same basic sequence: make the speaker discoverable, open Bluetooth settings on the phone or computer, and choose the speaker. Do not assume the same menu label or removal path appears on every operating system. If the speaker was paired previously, the saved connection is one possible issue to address; the speaker still needs to be available for discovery during setup.

The device says connected, but the speaker is silent
Bluetooth connection and audio routing are separate checks. On Windows, choose the speaker from the taskbar’s Sound output selector. On a Mac, go to System Settings > Sound > Output and select it. If the speaker is not available as an output or still cannot play sound, check whether the source device and speaker support a compatible Bluetooth audio configuration.
This distinction helps avoid repeating the same pairing steps unnecessarily. If the device already reports that the speaker is connected, first check where audio is being sent. On a Mac, the output choice is under Sound settings; on Windows, use the taskbar output selector. If the speaker is selected and still cannot play audio, then look beyond the connection status and consider compatibility, including Bluetooth audio profiles.
Pairing succeeds but speaker audio is still not compatible
A successful pairing does not guarantee that every device combination can stream speaker audio. A2DP, a Bluetooth profile used for audio streaming, can matter. Microsoft advises checking A2DP support for higher-quality audio streaming. Sony notes that a device without A2DP support, or one that supports only the receiving role, may not connect as expected for speaker audio. Check the specifications for both the source and speaker if output remains unavailable.

- Wireless Bluetooth streaming
- 12 hours of playtime
- IPX7 waterproof
- Pair multiple speakers with party boost
- Premium JBL sound quality
When checking specifications, look for the audio profile and the role the device supports, not just the word “Bluetooth.” Bluetooth pairing alone does not tell you that a particular source-speaker combination supports the audio behavior you need. The A2DP point is most relevant when pairing appears successful but speaker audio remains unavailable or does not work as expected; it is not a reason to skip the ordinary discovery and output checks first.
Android Bluetooth problems persist
Use Android’s problem-specific Bluetooth troubleshooting for the device and accessory. Some Android help steps depend on Android 8.0 or later and on the particular accessory; if the recommended steps do not resolve the issue, contact the device maker.
Because Android menu names and device behavior can vary by manufacturer and version, use troubleshooting that matches the phone or tablet and accessory involved. A supported Fast Pair notification may simplify connection for some combinations, but it is optional and not available for every speaker. If it does not appear, use the standard Bluetooth settings path instead.
What to check when you switch between devices
A speaker paired with one phone, laptop, or tablet may need to be put into pairing mode again before a different source can find it. Use the same platform steps for the new source, and check that source’s output selection if the speaker connects without playing sound. If an earlier saved pairing is interfering, remove it on the source device and pair again.
For example, if you are moving from a phone to a laptop, do not start by changing the phone’s settings. Put the speaker into its discoverable mode using the manual, then open Bluetooth settings on the laptop and add or connect to the speaker. On Windows or Mac, make the speaker the selected sound output if the laptop connects but continues playing through its own audio output. The exact sequence for placing the speaker in pairing mode remains specific to its model.

Can every Bluetooth speaker work as an audio output?
Not necessarily in every configuration. A2DP support can matter for audio streaming, and Sony notes that lack of A2DP support—or support for only the receiving role—may prevent expected speaker audio. Check the specifications for both devices if pairing succeeds but sound remains unavailable.
Does Android Fast Pair have to appear?
No. Fast Pair is available only for supported devices. If the notification does not appear, use Android’s Bluetooth settings to find and select the speaker.
Does Windows 10 still receive support?
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The basic Bluetooth pairing sequence is still to make the speaker discoverable, add or select it through Bluetooth settings, and choose it as the output if needed. Use instructions that match the supported Windows version installed on your laptop.
