Pairing has two separate parts: first connect the controller in Android’s Bluetooth settings, then use Steam Link to connect the phone to a computer that is running Steam. Bluetooth pairing alone does not install Steam Link or connect your phone to the host PC.

What you need before you start

Have the controller, an Android phone with Bluetooth enabled, and a computer with Steam installed. For remote play, the computer must be powered on with Steam running, and the phone and computer should be connected to the same network. Valve’s Steam Link Android app supports Android 5.0 and newer.

  • Controller: Its exact model manual must explain how to enter Bluetooth pairing mode. Pairing button combinations are not universal.
  • Phone: Android 5.0 or later is required for the Steam Link app. Menu names can differ between Android versions and manufacturers.
  • Host computer: Steam must be open and signed in on the computer that will run the game.
  • Network: The phone and host computer need to be on the same network for Steam Link setup.

Step 1: Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode

Turn on the controller and follow the pairing procedure in the manual for that exact model. A controller normally has to be actively discoverable before Android can list it. If it was connected to another device, disconnect it there or put it back into pairing mode according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Do not copy a button sequence from a different controller. Valve’s instructions for the discontinued 2015 Steam Controller, for example, cover that generation’s Bluetooth Low Energy support and firmware requirements; they are not generic instructions for Xbox, PlayStation, or third-party models.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

How to tell whether pairing mode worked

The controller may flash an indicator or show another status signal, but the exact behavior is model-specific. The practical test is whether its name appears in Android’s list of available Bluetooth devices. If it does not appear, return the controller to pairing mode rather than repeatedly tapping the Android screen.

Step 2: Pair the controller in Android

  1. Open Settings on the phone.
  2. Choose Connected devices.
  3. Tap Pair new device. On some phones, the equivalent option is inside a Bluetooth screen or under a manufacturer-specific connection menu.
  4. Wait for the controller’s name to appear in the available-device list.
  5. Select the controller’s name to pair it. Google Android Help describes this as selecting the controller from the list of available Bluetooth devices.
  6. Accept a pairing confirmation or code if Android displays one.

When pairing succeeds, Android places the controller under connected or saved devices. Android’s general Bluetooth guidance says a paired device remains paired until you unpair or forget it, so a later connection usually involves selecting the saved controller rather than pairing from scratch.

If your Android menu looks different

Manufacturers can rename or rearrange Bluetooth controls. Look for a screen containing Bluetooth, connected devices, or saved devices, then use the option that searches for or adds a new device. The wording may differ even though the process is the same: make the controller discoverable, scan, and select its name.

Step 3: Confirm the Bluetooth connection

Return to Settings > Connected devices and check the controller’s status. A connected status means Android has an active Bluetooth link; a saved or paired status means the phone remembers the controller but it may not currently be connected.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

If the controller was paired previously but is not active, select it in the saved-device list and choose the connect option. Keep the controller powered on and close enough for a normal Bluetooth connection while you do this.

Start over with Forget

If Android remembers a damaged or incomplete pairing, open the controller’s device details and choose Forget (or the equivalent unpair option). Then place the controller into pairing mode again and repeat the Pair new device procedure. Forgetting removes the saved relationship; it does not reset the controller’s firmware.

Step 4: Install and set up Steam Link

Bluetooth connects the controller to the phone. Steam Link is the separate app that streams a game from your Steam computer to the phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the official Steam Link app on the Android phone.
  2. Turn on the host computer and open Steam. Leave Steam running and signed in.
  3. Connect the phone and host computer to the same network, as Valve instructs for the Android Steam Link app.
  4. Open Steam Link and follow its on-screen setup to discover and select the host computer.
  5. Complete any displayed pairing or authorization step between the app and Steam.
  6. Start a game from the Steam Link interface and test the controller in that game.

Do not expect the Steam Link app to appear merely because Android paired a controller. Conversely, a working Steam Link connection does not prove that Android’s Bluetooth pairing succeeded; verify both connections independently.

Controller support in Steam Link for Android

Valve lists specific input devices as supported for Steam Link. It lists the Steam Controller and the Microsoft Xbox One S Controller. Valve’s list specifies Sony DualShock 4 support on Android 9.0 and higher. Other input devices may work, but a model absent from the list is not confirmed by that support list and should not be described as definitely compatible or definitely incompatible.

Controller Valve’s Steam Link listing Android-version condition What to verify
Steam Controller Listed as supported Valve’s listing does not state a general Android threshold in the supplied support note Use the instructions for your controller generation. The discontinued 2015 model has generation-specific Bluetooth Low Energy and firmware requirements.
Microsoft Xbox One S Controller Listed as supported No additional threshold stated in the supplied Valve note Confirm that your exact controller is the Bluetooth-capable Xbox One S model and follow its manual for pairing mode.
Sony DualShock 4 Listed as supported Android 9.0 and higher Check the phone’s Android version before troubleshooting the app.
Other Bluetooth controllers Not confirmed by that list Not stated Verify Android pairing, then test the model in Steam Link. “Not listed” is not the same as “incompatible.”

Compatibility depends on more than the radio connection. The controller must pair with Android, Steam Link must recognize the input, and the game must respond to the mapped controls. A device can pass one of those checks and fail another.

Adjust button and joystick assignments

After Android connects the controller, open the phone’s game-controller settings if they are available. Android provides settings that can swap button or joystick assignments. Use these controls when a game expects a different layout or an input is mapped to the wrong action.

A practical control check

  • Move both sticks and confirm that each produces the expected direction.
  • Press the face buttons, shoulder buttons, triggers, and directional pad once in a game or controller test screen.
  • Check that the menu, view, or system buttons do not open an unexpected Android function.
  • Save any remapping before returning to Steam Link, then test the same actions in the game.

Remapping changes the interpretation of inputs; it does not repair a controller that is not connected or a Steam Link session that has not found its host computer.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The controller does not appear in Pair new device

  1. Read the exact model manual and repeat its Bluetooth pairing procedure.
  2. Turn the controller off and back on, then place it into pairing mode again.
  3. Keep the Android Bluetooth screen open while the controller is discoverable.
  4. If the controller is already saved on the phone, open the saved-device entry and try reconnecting instead of creating a new pairing.
  5. If the saved entry appears stuck, choose Forget, then pair again from the available-device list.

Android’s documented workflow directs users to the controller’s manual for the pairing-mode step. That is why a button combination copied from another model is an unreliable fix.

Android says it is connected, but Steam Link does not respond

  • Open the Steam Link app and confirm that it has discovered the intended host computer.
  • Check that Steam is running on the host and that the computer is powered on.
  • Confirm that the phone and host computer are on the same network.
  • Compare the controller model with Valve’s supported-input list and its Android-version notes.
  • Test the controller in Android’s game-controller settings or another input screen to distinguish a phone-level issue from a Steam Link issue.

A Bluetooth status of connected only proves the phone-to-controller link. It does not prove that Steam Link has a host session or that a particular game accepts the device’s input layout.

Steam Link sees the host, but a particular game ignores inputs

First check the controller in Steam Link’s own interface. If navigation works there but the game does not react, inspect the game’s controller settings and the Android assignments. Some games expect a particular button layout, so a remap may be necessary. If no Steam Link interface responds, return to the Bluetooth connection and compatibility checks instead of changing in-game settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A previously working controller will not reconnect

Open Android’s saved Bluetooth devices and select the controller. Make sure it is powered on and not actively connected to another device. If reconnecting fails, use Forget, repeat the model-specific pairing procedure, and then run Steam Link’s host setup again.

The controller is a discontinued 2015 Steam Controller

Use Valve’s generation-specific support instructions rather than a generic Bluetooth guide. Valve’s support material for that controller discusses Bluetooth Low Energy support, firmware dependence, and a dedicated pairing procedure. Those details do not transfer to another controller model, even if the other controller has a similar button layout.

How to choose between controllers you already own

When several controllers are available, evaluate them in this order:

  1. Exact model listing: Prefer a model Valve explicitly lists for Steam Link when all other factors are equal.
  2. Android requirement: For a DualShock 4, the listed condition is Android 9.0 or higher.
  3. Bluetooth capability and manual: Confirm that the exact hardware revision supports Bluetooth pairing with Android and has a documented pairing procedure.
  4. Button familiarity: Choose the layout that matches the game’s on-screen prompts or your own muscle memory.
  5. Actual test: Pair it, connect Steam Link to the host, and check controls in the game you intend to play.

Valve says other input devices may work even when they are not officially supported. Treat that as a possibility to test, not a guarantee for every game, Android version, or controller revision.

Understanding the two connections

Connection What it does Where to verify it Common failure
Controller to Android over Bluetooth Delivers button, trigger, and joystick input to the phone Settings > Connected devices; connected or saved device status Controller is not in model-specific pairing mode or an old pairing record is stale
Phone to host computer through Steam Link Streams the Steam computer’s game to the phone and sends input back to Steam Steam Link’s host-discovery and setup screens Steam is not running, the host is off, or the devices are not on the same network

Keeping these layers separate makes diagnosis faster. If Android cannot list the controller, work on Bluetooth. If Android shows a connected controller but Steam Link cannot find the computer, work on Steam and the network. If Steam Link finds the computer but a game ignores input, check support notes and mappings.

What is not required for this setup

The documented workflow does not require a phone clamp, a special cable, a Bluetooth adapter, a replacement part, or a repair tool. The essential steps are model-specific pairing, Android’s Bluetooth connection, Steam Link installation, a running Steam host, and the same-network condition. Extra hardware may be useful for a different setup, but it is not a prerequisite for the Bluetooth pairing process described here.

Privacy and account boundaries

Pairing establishes a Bluetooth relationship between the controller and phone. Steam Link separately connects the phone to the Steam account and host computer through the app’s setup. Use the intended host during authorization, and remove the controller from Android’s saved devices with Forget if you no longer want the phone to reconnect automatically.

Quick verification checklist

  • The controller’s exact manual was used to enter pairing mode.
  • Android lists the controller under Connected devices.
  • The controller is connected rather than merely saved.
  • Steam Link is installed and open on the phone.
  • The host computer is on, signed in, and running Steam.
  • The phone and host computer share the same network.
  • The controller model and Android version match Valve’s support notes where applicable.
  • Buttons and sticks respond in Steam Link or the game, with Android remapping applied if necessary.

Bottom line

Start with the controller’s own pairing instructions, then use Android’s Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device path. After Android confirms the connection, open Steam Link, keep Steam running on the host computer, and put both devices on the same network. Pairing is only the input step; Steam Link setup is the separate step that enables Steam gaming on the phone.
