The safest way to move a flat-screen TV without its factory packaging is to use a close-fitting, adjustable TV moving carton with foam corner protectors. Measure the screen diagonally, confirm the set’s depth against the carton limit, cover the panel without putting tape on it, fill every void, and transport the packed TV upright. If a fitted carton is unavailable, use substantial cushioning and a moving blanket as a fallback, then immobilize the TV between sturdy, flat objects so it cannot slide, tip, or take pressure from other cargo.
Choose the packing method before you buy supplies
Your choice depends on three practical questions: can you obtain a carton that fits, can the TV remain upright for the entire move, and can you immobilize it so other items never press against the panel? A fitted carton gives the best protection because it adds a rigid outer shell and keeps padding in a predictable position. Blanket wrapping can protect against scratches and light knocks, but it is not a tested equivalent to a purpose-built carton.
| Method | Protection and fit | What you need | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjustable TV moving carton | Rigid double-wall coverage with foam corners; the carton must match the TV’s screen size and depth. | Correct-size carton, foam corner protectors, screen cover or soft panel layer, void fill, packing tape and labels. | Preferred for most flat-screen TVs, especially when the set will travel in a truck with other furniture. |
| No-carton fallback | Several inches of cushioning and a blanket reduce impact and abrasion, but the screen has less rigid protection. | At least three inches of bubble cushioning plus a quilted moving blanket, or screen wrap, foam corners, a blanket and stretch wrap. | Use only when a suitable carton cannot be obtained and you can keep the TV upright and firmly braced. |
| Professional packing | A packing service can handle unusually large, thin or valuable panels and difficult stairs or loading conditions. | Service arranged with a moving company; confirm what protection and liability terms are included. | Best when you cannot safely lift, brace or transport the television yourself. |
A moving company’s service page confirms that professional TV packing is an offered service category, but service quality and prices are not universal. Ask for the packing method, materials, handling instructions and coverage in writing.

Measure the screen size
TV sizes are normally stated by the screen’s diagonal measurement. Measure from one screen corner to the opposite corner, following the same diagonal used by the manufacturer. Record the TV’s overall width, height and depth as well; the bezel, rear housing, feet and any attached stand can make the outside dimensions larger than the advertised screen size.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the carton’s depth limit
Do not select a box by screen size alone. Compare the television’s depth and complete product dimensions with the carton specifications. U-Haul describes its flat-screen cartons as covering sets from 20 to 86 inches, with a large carton for 32–70-inch TVs and an extra-large carton for 70–86-inch TVs. Those are U-Haul product specifications, not a universal industry standard. U-Haul also states that its TV box will not fit sets deeper than five inches.
Measure the television with its stand removed if the carton is designed for the screen only. If the stand remains attached, include it in the dimensions and follow the carton manufacturer’s instructions. Never force a panel into a carton that bows, compresses the screen or leaves no room for corner protection.
Read the model manual
Look up the exact model’s manual before wrapping. Packing directions can differ by design, and some manufacturers supply special cardboard intended for moving. One Philips-branded manual instructs owners to save the front cardboard for moving or shipping, warns not to pack the stand on the same side as the screen, and notes that this cardboard is included only with select models. That warning applies to the models covered by that manual, not automatically to every TV.

Gather the materials
- A close-fitting, adjustable flat-screen TV moving carton with foam corner protectors.
- A screen cover or clean, soft protective layer that will not shed grit or press hard against the panel.
- Bubble cushioning, preferably enough to create at least three inches of protection when using the U-Haul no-carton fallback.
- A quilted moving blanket; a second blanket is useful for separating the TV from nearby objects.
- Stretch wrap for holding blanket layers in place, if you are using the Home Depot-style fallback.
- Void fill such as additional soft cushioning that cannot scratch the case or screen.
- Packing tape, a marker, labels and bags for cables, screws and remote controls.
- Two sturdy, flat objects for bracing a no-carton TV, such as rigid furniture panels that cannot flex into the screen.
- A helper or lifting equipment appropriate to the TV’s size and weight.
Keep adhesive tape away from the screen. Home Depot’s guidance is to secure tape over the protective wrap and onto the TV case, not directly to the panel.
Prepare the TV before wrapping it
- Photograph the connections. Take clear pictures of the rear and side ports before unplugging anything. Include labels in the photos if several cables look alike.
- Disconnect accessories. Remove HDMI, power, antenna, audio, network and other cables. Bag and label them so the correct cable stays with the television.
- Remove the stand or legs when the design allows it. Follow the model manual for the order and hardware. Put screws and washers in a labeled bag and tape or tie that bag to the stand, not to the screen.
- Remove loose items. Take off detachable brackets, streaming devices, game controllers and remote controls. Pack them separately so they cannot strike the panel.
- Clean carefully. If dust must be removed, use the cleaning method specified by the manufacturer. Do not apply pressure to the panel while preparing it.
- Let the set reach room temperature. If it came from a cold or damp location, allow condensation to clear before sealing it in padding.
Pack the TV in a fitted carton
Step 1: Protect the screen and corners
Place the screen cover or soft protective layer over the front panel. The layer should lie flat without trapped grit, folds or hard fasteners. Fit foam corner protectors around all four corners. The protectors should contact the case edges rather than press into the visible screen.
Step 2: Prepare the carton
Assemble the carton according to its instructions and reinforce the bottom seams with packing tape. Open the adjustable sections fully enough to accept the measured TV without scraping the sides. If the carton includes separate top and bottom foam pieces, position them before lifting the set so you do not have to maneuver the television inside a partially closed box.

Step 3: Lift the TV with two people
Keep hands on the side and bottom edges, never on the center of the panel. A large television can twist when carried by one person, so use two people who can see the route and communicate before turning or lowering it. Keep the screen facing away from walls, door frames and other obstacles.
Step 4: Place it in the carton
Lower the protected TV straight into the carton. Check that each corner protector remains seated and that no cable, screw, stand part or other hard object is trapped against the screen. The set should be supported by its edges and padding, not by pressure on the panel.
Step 5: Eliminate movement
Fill empty spaces around the sides and top with cushioning so the TV cannot slide or rock. Do not use dense objects that could push through the padding. Close the carton and test it gently: you should not hear or feel the television shifting. If it moves, reopen the carton and add or reposition void fill rather than relying on tighter tape.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Step 6: Seal and label
Tape every carton seam specified by the carton instructions. Mark the package “Fragile,” “This side up” and “Do not lay flat” on multiple faces so the instructions remain visible when the box is rotated. Add your destination room and a contact label without attaching anything to the screen or using adhesive on the TV case.
Use a no-carton fallback only when necessary
If no suitable carton is available, treat this as a risk-managed fallback rather than an equal substitute. The TV still needs a clean screen layer, corner protection, thick cushioning, a blanket and a way to remain upright without movement.

- Cover the screen with a soft screen layer. Keep tape off the panel.
- Wrap the entire set in at least three inches of bubble cushioning, as specified in U-Haul’s fallback guidance. Keep the bubble surface from rubbing directly against a delicate screen if the manufacturer’s instructions require a separate screen cover.
- Add a quilted moving blanket around the bubble-wrapped TV. Fold the blanket so corners and edges receive extra layers.
- Secure the blanket around the case with stretch wrap or straps placed around the blanket, never tightened across the screen.
- Place the wrapped set upright between two sturdy, flat objects. The objects should be tall and rigid enough to stop sliding and should not bow into the display.
- Fill gaps at the base and sides so the TV cannot tip or move during braking and turns.
Fallback B: Screen wrap, foam corners and stretch wrap
Home Depot describes another sequence: use two or three layers over the screen, fit foam corner pads, add a moving blanket, and secure the assembly with stretch wrap. The wrap should hold the blanket in place while leaving no adhesive on the panel. Add rigid flat bracing and gap fill; wrapping alone does not stop a television from sliding inside a vehicle.

Why a blanket alone is not enough
A blanket absorbs some abrasion and minor impact, but it does not create a rigid barrier against a chair leg, box corner or shifting appliance. A wide panel can also flex if cargo leans against it. If you cannot provide substantial cushioning and rigid bracing, do not move the television in a self-packed load; arrange professional packing instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the television upright during carrying and transport
U-Haul’s official packing guide says: “You should refrain from laying your TV down flat when you transport it, even when it’s protected by a TV Box.” Keep that instruction visible to everyone loading the vehicle.
- Carry upright. Keep the screen vertical while moving through rooms, stairs and doorways. Do not carry it flat by the edges.
- Load against a stable surface. Place the carton or braced wrapped TV against a rigid wall or other flat support. Avoid locations where a mattress, loose bin or soft furniture can roll into it.
- Brace both sides. Use sturdy flat objects to prevent lateral movement. Padding should fill gaps without creating a hard pressure point.
- Secure to the vehicle. Tie the carton or braced assembly to appropriate truck rails or anchor points. Straps should hold the package in position, not crush the carton or tighten across the panel.
- Keep heavy cargo away. Do not stack boxes, tools or furniture where they can fall against the TV or press into its face.
- Inspect after loading. Before driving, check that the package is still upright, straps have not loosened and no corner is touching a hard object.
Drive more conservatively than you would with ordinary boxes. Sudden braking, sharp turns and rough surfaces create the sliding and tipping forces that the bracing is intended to control.
Unloading and unpacking
- Have two people stabilize the carton or wrapped set before removing any strap.
- Move it upright to a clear, dry room before opening the carton or removing the blanket.
- Open the package without cutting deeply into the sides; a knife can damage the case or screen.
- Lift the TV out by its side and bottom edges. Do not pull on the screen layer, corner foam or cables.
- Inspect the panel, bezel and rear housing for cracks, pressure marks or loose parts before installing the stand.
- Reattach the stand exactly as the manual specifies, reconnect cables using your photographs, and keep the original protective materials if you may move the TV again.
If the television was exposed to a major impact, do not power it on until you have checked for visible damage and allowed any temperature-related condensation to clear.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
| Mistake | Why it is risky | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing a carton by diagonal size only | The TV may be too deep or too wide for the carton, leaving pressure on the panel or preventing corner protection. | Compare width, height and depth with the specific carton. U-Haul states a five-inch depth limit for its own TV box. |
| Taping directly to the screen | Adhesive can leave residue or damage the surface and may pull at a coating when removed. | Tape over the protective wrap and onto the case or blanket, as Home Depot advises. |
| Wrapping without corner protection | Corners and edges are the first areas to contact the floor, carton or other cargo. | Fit foam corner protectors before adding the outer wrap or carton. |
| Leaving voids inside the carton | The TV can slide and absorb shocks at the edges. | Add soft void fill, close the carton and test for movement before sealing. |
| Laying the TV flat | Flat transport exposes the panel to flexing and pressure from cargo. | Keep it upright and follow U-Haul’s warning against transporting it flat even in a TV box. |
| Putting the stand on the screen side | A hard stand component can press directly into the panel. | Remove the stand or follow the exact model manual; a Philips manual specifically warns against packing it on the screen side for covered models. |
| Relying on a blanket with no bracing | The TV can slide, tip or receive a concentrated impact. | Use rigid flat bracing and fill gaps, or obtain professional packing. |
| Stacking heavy items nearby | A shifting object can strike or crush the display. | Create a protected upright zone with no loose heavy cargo. |
When to hire professional packers
Use a professional packing service when the TV is exceptionally large, unusually thin, highly valuable, difficult to remove from the room or impossible for you to brace securely. It is also sensible when stairs, narrow turns or a long carry make a two-person lift unsafe. Ask the mover whether the service includes a fitted carton, corner protection, upright loading, tie-downs and damage coverage. Do not assume that every company uses the same materials or accepts the same liability.
