The most reliable system uses metadata tags as the source of truth and folders as a convenient navigation layer. Group files by the soundtrack release they came from, preserve the release’s album and track credits, retain disc and track numbers, and keep different editions separate. A tag editor such as MusicBrainz Picard can identify releases, check proposed matches, add artwork, and rename or move files after you confirm the results.
Why game soundtracks need a different filing system
A game title is not always the same thing as a soundtrack release. One game may have an original soundtrack, a promotional mini-album, a vinyl edition, a reissue, a “complete” collection, and regional releases with different track lists. Those releases can use different titles, credits, dates, labels, artwork, disc counts, and identifiers.
Players also use several metadata fields when they display an album. If you put the game name into the album-artist field, you may lose the actual credited act. If you put every performer into one filename, names become long and inconsistent. If you omit disc and track numbers, a multi-disc set can play in the wrong order. The solution is to give each fact one stable home in the tags, then generate a readable folder and filename view from those tags.

Choose the data model before editing files
Tags and folders have different jobs

Use the tags for facts that should survive a move. Use folders for a predictable view such as game, series, or release. Do not treat a folder name as a substitute for an album or artist tag.

Recommended tag fields

MusicBrainz Picard documents fields such as album artist, track artist, release date, disc number, and release identifiers. The exact tag representation varies by file format, so the visible field name in a player may not be identical to the underlying tag name.
Preserve the credits exactly as released
For a release-level credit, follow the credit printed or listed for the release instead of replacing it with the game title, a guessed composer, or a personal category. MusicBrainz’s release guidance states: “In general, you should just enter the artist(s) as shown on the release (see the guidelines for artist credits).”
At track level, the same guidance says: “Track artists should follow the release artist, except where another artist is credited in the track listing of the release.” That distinction matters when one track has a guest performer, vocalist, ensemble, or different composer credit.
- Put the soundtrack’s credited act in Album artist.
- Put a different credit shown for an individual track in Artist.
- Do not use the game title as a replacement for either credit.
- If you want to browse by game, add a separate custom field that your player supports.
Keeping these roles separate lets an album remain grouped under its real release credit while still allowing a player to find an individual performer.
Use a folder and filename template that survives change
A practical top-level layout is:
Music/Soundtracks/<Game or Release>/<disc>-<track> - <title>.<ext>For a collection organized around a series, use:
Music/Soundtracks/<Series>/<Game> - <Release Edition>/<disc>-<track> - <title>.<ext>Use an edition or release detail whenever two releases would otherwise produce the same folder name. Examples of useful distinguishing details include a release year, “Original Soundtrack,” “Complete,” a disc-set name, or another release detail supplied by the metadata.
Keep filenames short enough for your operating system and backup tools. Adding the artist to every filename is optional; it can help in a file manager, but long or inconsistent credits make filenames cumbersome. The album, artist, date, and identifiers belong in tags, not in an attempt to encode every fact into one filename.
These are organizational templates, not MusicBrainz standards. Their value is consistency. If you later change the folder hierarchy, a correctly tagged library remains searchable.

Step-by-step workflow with MusicBrainz Picard
1. Make a working copy
Before a batch edit, duplicate the soundtrack folders or make a backup. Work on the copy until you have checked the results. This gives you a way to restore original tags and filenames if an album is matched to the wrong edition.
2. Inventory the files
List the files that need attention and note obvious groups: game, apparent album title, disc, and file format. Do not assume that files in one existing folder came from one official release. A download folder may contain bonus tracks, a reissue, and an unrelated album under the same game name.
3. Add the files or folder
In Picard, add the files or the folder containing them. Unmatched files appear in the working area. Keep unrelated games and releases apart while you identify them; a smaller, known group is easier to verify than one huge mixed import.
4. Cluster unmatched files
Use Picard’s clustering command to group files that appear to belong together. Clustering is a starting point based on the existing metadata; it is not proof that the files are one release. Split a cluster when the track list, disc count, or edition details show that it contains more than one release.
5. Look up the intended release
Run the album lookup for each cluster and select the release that matches your files. Compare the release title, credited artist, date, country, label, identifiers, number of discs, and track list. A result that has familiar track titles can still be the wrong edition.
6. Use AcoustID scanning when text is weak
Picard can scan files using AcoustID to help identify audio when filenames or existing tags are incomplete. Treat the resulting suggestions as candidates. Confirm the album and edition with the visible release details before accepting any match.
7. Inspect match confidence and compare values
Picard may infer matches from existing metadata. When a match looks uncertain, compare the original values with the proposed values in the interface. Check at least the album, album artist, track title, disc number, track number, and release edition. A plausible title is not enough if the order or disc count is different.

8. Correct ambiguous tracks manually
If a file is assigned to the wrong track, drag it to the correct track in the release view. Correct the assignment before saving. Manual assignment is especially important for similarly named bonus tracks, alternate mixes, and files from releases with overlapping titles.

Picard’s workflow includes selecting or confirming cover art. Choose artwork for the particular release you selected, not a generic image for the game. If no appropriate art is available, leaving the field empty is safer than attaching artwork from another edition.
10. Configure naming and directories
Picard can rename files and place them in directories with a naming script based on the tags. Configure the script to produce your chosen folder template and a disc-track filename. Preview the resulting paths before saving, especially when titles contain characters that your operating system does not allow.
11. Save only after review
Save the files after the release, track assignments, credits, sequence, and artwork are confirmed. Saving can update tags and, when configured, move or rename the files. Afterward, open the destination folder and verify that the files landed where expected.
12. Test the result in your normal player
Refresh or rescan the library, then open the album. Confirm that it appears once, that the release artist is grouped correctly, that track artists are visible where expected, and that discs sort in order. Test a custom game or franchise field if you added one; players differ in whether they display and index nonstandard tags.

Handle editions, reissues, and multi-disc sets deliberately
Keep releases separate when their data differs
Do not merge two editions simply because they share a game title. Keep them separate when their track lists, credits, dates, countries, labels, identifiers, artwork, or disc structure differ. Give each edition its own album metadata and, when needed, an edition detail in the folder name.
If you combine files from two editions into one album, a player may show misleading artwork, an incorrect release date, or a track list that no official release used. It also becomes difficult to determine which version a track came from later.

Preserve disc and track numbers
Store the disc number and track number supplied by the selected release. A filename pattern such as 01-03 - Track Title is readable, but the numeric tags are what let a player sort correctly after a folder move. For a two-disc set, retain both the disc value and the track position within that disc rather than numbering all tracks as one flat sequence.
Do not guess missing release data
Release date, country, label, and identifiers are useful for distinguishing editions, but only enter values supported by the selected release. An unknown field is better than a guessed year or an identifier copied from a different pressing.

Choose between automation and manual editing

A sensible rule is to automate discovery and repetitive writing, but make a human decision about the release, edition, and credits.
Artwork and display choices
Cover art is primarily a display choice, not an identification field. Attach artwork that belongs to the selected release when it is available and appropriate. A game’s key art may look attractive but can obscure which soundtrack edition the files represent. If you keep multiple editions, their artwork can help distinguish them in a player.
Artwork handling also varies by file format and player. Check one album in your normal player before applying a large batch, and retain your backup until you know the player displays the embedded image as intended.

Players commonly provide album, album artist, artist, genre, date, and disc views. Some also index custom fields; others ignore them. If your player supports a custom game-title or franchise field, use one consistent spelling and capitalization. If it does not, keep the game relationship in the folder hierarchy and leave the standard release fields intact.
A custom field should supplement the release information, not replace it. For example, a game field can contain the game name while Album remains the soundtrack release title and Album artist remains the credited release artist. This preserves both game browsing and accurate music-credit searches.

Troubleshooting common organization failures
The album appears under the game title instead of the credited artist
Check the album-artist tag. Restore the release-level credit shown on the selected release, then use a separate game field or folder for game browsing. Do not solve the display issue by rewriting the credit.
Tracks from two editions are mixed together
Compare the track lists, release dates, identifiers, and disc counts. Undo the batch change from your backup if necessary, split the files into release-specific groups, and run lookup separately for each edition.
The tracks play in the wrong order
Inspect both disc number and track number. Confirm that the player is sorting by those tags rather than by filename or title. Rename files with a zero-padded disc-track pattern if filesystem sorting is still being used.

Inspect the track-level artist tag. The release artist may be correct at album level while an individual track has a different credited artist. Preserve that track credit instead of adding every name to the album-artist field.
Picard selected a plausible but wrong release
Compare original and proposed metadata, then verify the release title, artist, track order, disc count, and edition details. Select the intended release or assign tracks manually. Do not save until the visible track list matches your files.
Renamed files are difficult to find
Check the configured naming script and destination directory. Use a simple template with disc, track, and title, and keep the original copy until you have confirmed the new paths. Avoid putting every credit and identifier into the filename.
The custom game field does not appear in the player
The player may not index that field or may use a different field name for your file format. Keep the field if it is useful elsewhere, but rely on folders and standard album fields for that player’s browsing views.
A maintenance routine that prevents drift
- When adding a new soundtrack, identify its release before moving it into the permanent library.
- Use the same spelling for game, series, and edition names in folders and custom fields.
- Keep separate releases separate even when they share a game title.
- Preserve disc and track numbers whenever you replace or re-encode files.
- Review automated matches instead of accepting every high-confidence-looking result blindly.
- Back up tags and files before a large batch rename or move.
- Periodically open multi-disc albums and one-off editions in your normal player to catch sorting or grouping problems.
With this model, a folder move does not erase the identity of a release, and a player change does not force you to rebuild the collection. The release title and credits remain stable in tags, while the folder structure can evolve as your library grows.
