To create a dropdown in Shopify, open Content > Menus, edit your main menu, and indent the links you want to appear beneath a top-level item. Save the menu, then check how it works on your storefront on desktop and mobile. The exact appearance depends on your theme.
Create a dropdown in Shopify admin

In Shopify admin, go to Content > Menus and open your main menu.

Add each submenu item with a clear label and a destination, such as a collection or page. Create the collection or page before adding its link if it does not exist yet. If customers should be able to visit a category landing page, add that page as a submenu item rather than relying on the dropdown header to do both jobs.

Drag each submenu item below the intended header until it is indented. The top-level item remains in the main menu; the indented items appear beneath it in the dropdown.

Save the menu, then open your storefront and test the navigation.

Check the menu on your storefront
Menu editing sets the links and their hierarchy, but the theme controls how that hierarchy appears. Open the storefront on both desktop and mobile and confirm that the dropdown opens, the labels are readable, and each link reaches the intended destination.

Confirm your theme’s header settings use the menu you edited.

Check the number of nested levels your theme supports. Shopify says most themes support up to two levels of nested dropdowns. All Online Store 2.0 themes support multilevel navigation, while older sectioned themes might need updates. See Shopify’s SEO overview for its guidance on theme navigation support.

Do not assume a footer menu will display dropdowns the same way as the main menu. Shopify’s guidance is not consistent on footer nesting, so verify the behavior in your theme and consult its current documentation if footer navigation matters.

If submenu links do not appear
Check these items in order:

In Content > Menus, confirm each submenu link is visibly indented beneath the correct top-level item, then save again.

In your theme’s header settings, verify that the edited menu is assigned to the storefront navigation.

Check whether a navigation app or custom theme code is controlling or replacing the menu.

Review your theme’s version and navigation support. Shopify notes that older stores can encounter issues with nested navigation; recreating the menu in the current nested format or contacting Shopify support may be necessary.

When the built-in menu editor is not enough
The built-in editor is the straightforward option for ordinary nested links. If your theme cannot provide the display or interaction you need, or you need behavior beyond its supported nesting, ask a Shopify Partner or theme developer about a custom change. The right solution depends on the required behavior and the theme; Shopify’s documentation does not establish a particular service’s availability or terms.
