The fastest way to organize a PS5 is to separate three jobs: use Settings > Storage to see what is consuming space, use Game Library to move or remove games, and use Media Gallery to sort screenshots and video clips. Keep games you play often on console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD; use USB extended storage as a holding area for PS5 games you are not currently playing and for PS4 games you want to run directly. Copy important captures to a USB drive, and format storage only after backing up files you need.

Start with a storage audit

Before deleting anything or buying a drive, check what the console is actually using. On the PS5, open Settings > Storage. Sony’s storage-management screen separates space used by games and applications, media, saved data and other categories, then provides controls for moving or deleting content. This prevents a common mistake: removing a large game when screenshots or clips are the real source of the shortage.

Read each category before changing it

  • Games and applications: installed PS5 and PS4 titles, add-ons and applications. This is usually the largest category and the one most suitable for moving to expanded storage.
  • Media: screenshots and video clips. These can accumulate unnoticed if you capture gameplay frequently.
  • Saved data: progress and settings. Treat it differently from an installed game; deleting a game does not mean you have to delete its saved data.
  • Cloud saved data: where supported by the relevant PlayStation service, cloud copies are distinct from local game data and captures. The console’s storage table lists cloud saved data separately.

Record which category is tight before taking action. If the games category is full, move or delete installations. If media is high, export or remove captures. If saved data is the concern, verify your backup or cloud position before deleting local copies.

Choose the right place for each kind of content

PS5 storage options are not interchangeable. The key distinction is whether a drive merely holds a game or can launch it. Use this table as the decision point before purchasing or formatting anything.

Storage option Best use Important limitation or requirement
PS5 console storage Games and other data you need immediately available Check remaining capacity under Settings > Storage.
USB extended storage Keep installed games outside console storage, especially titles not currently in rotation PS5 games must be copied back to console storage or M.2 storage before they can be played. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. Sony specifies SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later, 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum; not every drive is guaranteed to work, and a USB hub should not be used.
Compatible M.2 SSD Expand capacity while keeping PS5 and PS4 games playable from the added storage The SSD must meet Sony’s current compatibility, heat-dissipation and installation requirements. Follow the current installation instructions for your PS5 model.
USB drive for captures Copy screenshots and clips out of Media Gallery or keep a separate archive The guidance establishes capture copying, not a particular drive model or performance specification.
Cloud storage Store saved data when the applicable PlayStation service supports it Cloud saved data is separate from installed games and captures; availability depends on the relevant service and account.

In practical terms, choose USB extended storage when you want inexpensive “parking” space. Choose an M.2 SSD when you want extra games to remain launchable without copying them back and forth. A separate USB drive is useful for captures, but it is not the same as a USB drive formatted as PS5 extended storage.

Organize installed games in Game Library

Keep an active rotation on fast, launchable storage

Decide which games you are playing this month, which you may return to soon, and which are finished or on indefinite hold. Keep the active group on console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD. This avoids the extra copy operation required when a PS5 game is parked on USB extended storage.

From the Game Library, use the console’s move controls to transfer supported games between internal storage, USB extended storage and an installed M.2 SSD. The exact destination choices depend on which storage devices are connected and formatted, so confirm the destination shown on screen before starting a long transfer.

Park PS5 games on USB extended storage

USB extended storage is a holding area for PS5 titles. A PS5 game can remain installed there, freeing console space, but it cannot launch from that location. When you want to play it, copy it back to console storage or to compatible M.2 storage first. The copy may take substantially longer than launching a title that is already on playable storage, so park games that are not part of your immediate rotation.

Run PS4 games directly from USB

PS4 games have a different rule: Sony supports playing them directly from USB extended storage. If your library includes both generations, placing less frequently played PS4 titles on USB can free internal space without requiring a copy-back before every session.

Delete installations without losing the purchase

When a game is complete and you need the space, deleting its installed game data is reversible in the practical sense that Sony says deleted game and application purchases can be downloaded again from the Game Library. Downloadable add-ons and saved data should still be considered separately; remove only the items you are comfortable removing, and check saved-data settings before deleting progress.

Set up USB extended storage safely

Check the drive before formatting

Sony’s USB extended-storage support guidance specifies a SuperSpeed USB connection rated at 5 Gbps or later, capacity from 250 GB through 8 TB, and warns that not all drives are guaranteed to work. Connect the drive directly to the PS5 rather than through a USB hub. A drive that meets the headline capacity and speed figures can still be incompatible, so verify the current PlayStation requirements for the console model you own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up files before the first format

Formatting a drive as extended storage erases data already on that drive. Copy any documents, photos or other files you need to another location before formatting. Once the drive is formatted, use it for game storage rather than treating it as a general-purpose archive.

  1. Connect the compatible USB drive directly to the PS5.
  2. Open Settings > Storage and select the USB extended-storage option presented by the console.
  3. Read the formatting warning, confirm that the drive contains no files you need, and approve formatting only when you are ready.
  4. After formatting, use the Game Library’s move command to transfer games to the USB drive.
  5. When finished, follow the PS5’s on-screen safe-removal procedure before disconnecting the drive. Do not simply unplug an active extended-storage drive.

If the drive is not detected, check the cable, connect it directly instead of through a hub, verify that it is within Sony’s capacity range and meets the 5 Gbps-or-faster requirement, then check the current support guidance for your PS5 model. Do not reformat a drive until you have confirmed that any existing files are backed up.

Use M.2 storage for games you want to launch

A compatible M.2 SSD is the expansion choice when the goal is more playable game space. Sony states that supported M.2 storage can store and launch PS5 and PS4 games and can also hold media applications. That makes it different from USB extended storage, where PS5 games must be copied back before playing.

Verify compatibility before buying

M.2 compatibility is not determined by capacity alone. Sony’s current requirements cover the SSD type and performance, physical dimensions, heat-dissipation provisions and installation procedure. Check the live PlayStation support instructions for your console revision before purchasing; requirements can be updated, and an SSD that fits physically may still fail the performance or thermal criteria.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install and test methodically

  1. Shut down the PS5 completely and disconnect it according to Sony’s installation instructions.
  2. Open the expansion bay only as described for your PS5 model.
  3. Install the compatible M.2 SSD and its required heat-dissipation hardware, securing it at the specified mounting point.
  4. Reassemble the console, reconnect power, and start the PS5.
  5. When the console prompts you to format the M.2 storage, confirm only after verifying that the newly installed drive is the intended one.
  6. Move selected games from console storage through the Game Library, then launch one of the moved titles to confirm the expansion is working as expected.

Keep the M.2 drive for games and media applications you expect to launch. Use USB extended storage for the backlog and archive-like parking role; using both lets you reserve the faster, launchable capacity for the titles that matter now.

Organize screenshots and clips in Media Gallery

Sony describes Media Gallery as “The Media Gallery app is your place to view and manage all your screenshots and video clips.” It includes the basic tools needed to turn an undifferentiated capture feed into a usable archive.

Find captures quickly

  1. Open Media Gallery from the PS5 home screen.
  2. Use the sort controls to change the order when you need recent captures, older material or another available sequence.
  3. Use filters to narrow the view by the available capture attributes, such as image or video.
  4. Open the game-organized albums to browse captures by title instead of scrolling through every capture on the console.
  5. Mark standout screenshots and clips as favorites so they remain easier to retrieve later.

Use one pass to delete obvious duplicates and accidental captures, then a second pass to decide what deserves long-term retention. Deleting an unwanted clip reduces media usage without affecting game installations or saved progress.

Copy captures to USB

Media Gallery supports copying selected captures to a connected USB storage device. Connect the USB drive, select the screenshots or clips you want to export, and choose the copy command offered in Media Gallery. Keep the exported files on a separate capture drive or another backup location before deleting the console copies.

WD_BLACK 1TB SN850P NVMe M.2 SSD Officially Licensed Storage Expansion for PS5 Consoles, up to 7,300MB/s, with heatsink - WDBBYV0010BNC-WRSN
  • Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
  • With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

The capture-copy workflow does not establish a required drive model or performance rating. Choose a drive that your computer or other viewing device supports, and keep the original files until you have confirmed that the copy opens correctly.

Use a simple capture policy

  • Favorites: only clips or images you expect to reuse, share or reference.
  • Game albums: the primary browsing method when you are looking for captures from one title.
  • USB archive: exported material you want to retain outside the console.
  • Console copy: temporary captures that are still waiting for review or transfer.

Protect saved data while freeing space

Installed game files, captures and saved data serve different purposes. Before selecting a deletion command in Settings > Storage, identify whether it targets the game, an add-on, a capture or a save. A game can be downloaded again from your Game Library, but a save may represent your only local progress unless a supported cloud copy or another backup exists.

Sony’s storage information distinguishes cloud saved data from game data and captures. If your PlayStation service and account support cloud saves, verify synchronization and retention there before removing local saved data. Cloud storage is not a replacement for capture archiving: screenshots and clips need to be copied through Media Gallery to a USB device or another destination.

A repeatable PS5 organization routine

Monthly five-minute check

  1. Open Settings > Storage and note which category is approaching its limit.
  2. Review the Game Library and label your mental rotation: playing now, waiting, finished or archive.
  3. Move waiting PS5 games to USB extended storage, or to M.2 storage if you want them immediately playable.
  4. Move less-used PS4 games to USB extended storage when direct play from that drive is useful.
  5. Open Media Gallery, remove accidental captures, favorite the keepers and copy irreplaceable clips to USB.
  6. Check that any USB extended-storage drive is safely disconnected before removing it from the console.

When the console is nearly full

  • Start with the largest category shown in Settings > Storage rather than deleting randomly.
  • Export captures before deleting them if they are not replaceable.
  • Move inactive PS5 games to USB extended storage, accepting the copy-back step when you return to them.
  • Move launch-ready games to a compatible M.2 SSD if you need more playable capacity.
  • Delete completed installations only after confirming that the saved data is retained or backed up.

When you want to buy storage

  • Choose a compatible M.2 SSD if your priority is launching PS5 games from expanded storage.
  • Choose compatible USB extended storage if your priority is holding games outside the console, especially a backlog.
  • Choose a separate USB drive if your priority is exporting and archiving screenshots and clips.
  • Recheck Sony’s current requirements immediately before purchase; the USB figures of 250 GB minimum, 8 TB maximum and SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later are support requirements, not a guarantee that every drive will work.

Troubleshoot the common storage problems

A PS5 game on USB will not start

This is expected behavior, not necessarily a fault. Copy the game from USB extended storage to console storage or compatible M.2 storage, then launch it from that playable location. PS4 games are the exception and can run directly from USB extended storage.

The PS5 does not recognize a USB drive

Confirm that the drive is connected directly, not through a hub; check the SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps-or-later requirement and the 250 GB-to-8 TB capacity range; try a known-good cable; and consult Sony’s current compatibility list or support instructions. Do not format the drive until files you need are backed up, because formatting erases its existing contents.

A transfer appears to remove a game

Moving a game changes its storage location; it does not remove the purchase from your account. Check the destination drive in Settings > Storage or the Game Library. If you deliberately deleted the installation, Sony says the purchased game or application can be downloaded again from the Game Library.

You cannot find a screenshot or clip

Open Media Gallery, change the sort order, apply or clear filters, and browse the album for the relevant game. Check Favorites if you marked it. If it was copied to USB and removed from the console, look on the USB drive rather than in Media Gallery.

The console warns about removing storage

Stop any transfer or access and use the PS5’s safe-removal command before disconnecting a USB extended-storage drive. Unplugging it while active can interrupt transfers or make the storage unavailable until it is reconnected and checked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical setup

Use console storage or M.2 for the games you launch regularly, USB extended storage for PS5 games you want to keep but not play immediately and for PS4 games you can run directly, and Media Gallery plus a separate USB archive for captures. Revisit Settings > Storage on a regular schedule, export captures before deleting them, and treat every format operation as destructive. This arrangement keeps playable space available without losing track of games, progress or memories.
