For an older PC with an NVIDIA GPU, the safest optimization method is to tune one game at a time: open NVIDIA App’s Graphics tab, move the Performance-to-Quality slider toward Performance, review the proposed changes, and apply them per game. NVIDIA bases those recommendations on your GPU, CPU, and display, so they are a starting point rather than a universal low-end preset. If the game still stutters, lower its most demanding settings and determine whether the CPU or GPU is the limiting component.
What NVIDIA App can—and cannot—do on an older PC
NVIDIA App gives you a central place to inspect supported games, adjust resolution and display options, and apply NVIDIA’s recommended in-game settings. Its automatic recommendations use information about your graphics processor, processor, and display. That personalization is useful when you do not know which options matter most, but it does not make one slider position ideal for every older computer, game, resolution, or refresh rate.
The app changes software settings; it cannot add graphics memory, cure overheating, or remove a processor bottleneck. A setting change may improve consistency or responsiveness, but no fixed frames-per-second increase is guaranteed. Treat every recommendation as reversible: change one title, play it under the same conditions, and keep a record of what you changed.
- Best starting scope: the individual game’s settings, not Global Settings.
- Best first priority: move the slider toward Performance when smooth play matters more than image quality.
- Best verification: review the proposed changes, launch the game, and test a repeatable scene.
- Best fallback: lower demanding options inside the game and identify whether game latency points to the CPU or render latency points to the GPU.
Prepare before changing anything
Record your current state
Open the game first and note its resolution, display mode, frame-rate limit, quality preset, and any unusual options such as ray tracing or advanced anti-aliasing. A screenshot of the graphics menu is enough. If the new settings look worse or introduce a problem, you can restore the previous values instead of guessing what changed.

Use a repeatable test
Choose a short section you can replay: the same level, training area, save file, or opening route. Observe stutter, input delay, image clarity, and whether frame delivery feels uneven. Do not compare a crowded scene in one run with an empty hallway in another; the different workload can hide the effect of a setting.
Keep the diagnosis per game
Older systems often run a mixture of lightweight and demanding games. A setting that helps one title can make another look unnecessarily soft. Per-game configuration lets you isolate a problem and prevents a global change from affecting every game and application.
Step-by-step: optimize one game in NVIDIA App
1. Open the Graphics panel
- Launch NVIDIA App.
- Select Graphics from the app navigation.
- Choose the game you want to tune.
NVIDIA describes this panel as the place to configure resolution and screen options, use Optimize, and inspect the game’s settings. If the title is missing, confirm that it is installed in a location the app can scan, then use the app’s available rescan or add-game controls. The exact labels can change between releases.
2. Favor Performance on the slider
Move the Performance-to-Quality slider toward Performance when your priority is steadier play. Moving it toward Quality asks the app to preserve or increase visual fidelity instead. The slider influences the settings NVIDIA App will recommend or apply; it is not a direct frame-rate control and does not guarantee a particular result.
3. Select Optimize, then inspect every proposed change
Choose Optimize and wait for the app to list the changes. Read the proposed resolution, display, and in-game options before applying them. A recommendation can be reasonable for the detected hardware yet still conflict with your preference for sharp text, a particular aspect ratio, or a stable frame cap.

4. Apply changes to this game first
Apply the recommendation at the game’s entry rather than changing Global Settings. Per-game settings are the controlled way to diagnose one title. Use Global Settings only when you deliberately want the same behavior across all games and applications.
5. Launch and test the same scene
Start the game, load the repeatable test area, and check smoothness, image quality, and input response. Allow enough time for shader compilation or asset streaming if the game performs those tasks after a settings change. Compare with your recorded baseline, not with an assumed percentage gain.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →6. Keep, adjust, or revert
Keep the recommendation if it improves play without an unacceptable visual trade-off. If it is too soft or still stutters, adjust the game’s own graphics menu manually. Revert the individual changes if a game crashes, displays rendering errors, or behaves worse. Because the change was per game, the rest of your library remains untouched.
Performance versus image quality: how to choose the slider position
The slider represents a trade-off, not a “low-end mode.” Toward Performance, the app is more likely to select less demanding values. That can reduce visual detail or resolution, but it may leave more headroom for consistent frame delivery. Toward Quality, the app favors visual detail and can increase the workload on an already constrained GPU or CPU.
| Priority | Starting choice | What to check afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Smoother play on constrained hardware | Move the slider toward Performance, then use Optimize | Whether stutter and input response improve in the same test scene |
| Preserving image detail | Keep the slider nearer Quality or manually restore selected visual options | Whether the resulting workload causes frame-time spikes or delayed input |
| Diagnosing one troublesome title | Use a per-game recommendation first | Which individual option changes the result, so you can keep quality where it matters |
NVIDIA does not publish one best slider position for every older PC. Your display resolution, refresh rate, processor, graphics card, memory pressure, and the game’s own engine all affect the outcome. The useful question is not “Which preset is officially for low-end PCs?” but “Which reversible combination gives this game acceptable frame pacing on this machine?”

Per-game settings or Global Settings?
NVIDIA App exposes both scopes. Start with per-game settings because they limit the blast radius while you learn how a title responds. A global change is appropriate only when you have a reason for every game to receive it.

| Per game | You are optimizing or troubleshooting a specific title | None beyond that game’s behavior; other titles remain unchanged |
| Global Settings | You intentionally want one behavior across all games and applications | A change suited to one title can reduce quality or compatibility elsewhere |
After experimenting, you can keep different profiles: a more performance-oriented profile for a demanding game and a higher-quality profile for a light or older game. Avoid using Global Settings as a shortcut before you know which setting is actually responsible for a problem.
When Optimize is not enough: tune the game itself
NVIDIA’s performance guidance recommends reducing game settings when performance is inadequate. Make changes in a controlled order so you can see what helped.
Lower the settings that change rendering workload most
- Reduce output resolution or the game’s internal render resolution if the GPU is struggling. This usually has a more visible sharpness cost than lowering a single effect.
- Lower shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, ambient-occlusion quality, and other expensive lighting options when the game offers separate controls.
- Reduce anti-aliasing quality if edges are consuming substantial GPU time. Compare moving images, not only a still screenshot.
- Keep texture quality within available video memory. Excessively high textures can cause streaming pauses even when average rendering speed looks acceptable.
- Use a sensible frame-rate limit when the game repeatedly swings between high and low frame rates. A consistent limit can feel smoother than an unstable maximum, but the appropriate value depends on the game and display.
These controls are game-specific. NVIDIA App can recommend values, but the game remains the authoritative place to see every available option and its immediate visual effect. Change one group at a time, retest the same scene, and stop once the experience is acceptable; lowering every option to its minimum can make the game unnecessarily unattractive without solving a CPU limit.
Determine whether the CPU or GPU is the bottleneck
NVIDIA’s latency guidance separates two useful symptoms. High game latency is associated with the CPU side of the workload, while high render latency points toward the GPU side. The labels and telemetry available to you depend on the game and driver, so use them as diagnostic clues rather than as a promise that a particular setting will fix the issue.

Signs of a CPU-side limit
- Lowering resolution or visual quality barely changes the slowdown.
- Busy scenes with many characters, physics calculations, or simulation tasks cause the largest drops.
- The game reports high game latency while the GPU has unused capacity.
For a CPU-limited title, reducing simulation-heavy options, crowd or view-distance settings, and background workload may help when those controls exist. Closing unnecessary applications can reduce contention, but software changes cannot turn an old processor into a faster one.
Signs of a GPU render limit
- Lowering resolution or effects produces a clear improvement.
- High render latency appears with the GPU working near full capacity.
- Lighting, shadows, reflections, anti-aliasing, or other visual effects trigger the largest frame-time spikes.
For a GPU-limited title, reduce the most expensive visual options first. If the GPU has insufficient headroom even at reduced settings, NVIDIA’s guidance notes that faster hardware may ultimately be required to lower latency. Do not interpret that statement as a recommendation to buy hardware before measuring the bottleneck.
When neither diagnosis is obvious
Stutter can also come from asset streaming, shader compilation, thermal throttling, storage delays, or a game-specific bug. Keep the NVIDIA App changes reversible, check temperatures and clock behavior with tools you already trust, and test after shader caches have finished building. If only one title misbehaves while others are stable, investigate that game’s patches and settings rather than applying a global change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Legacy Settings for older games only
For an older title, open Graphics > Driver Settings > Show Legacy Settings. NVIDIA lists legacy controls such as anisotropic filtering, texture filtering, anti-aliasing variants, background application frame rate, and PhysX. NVIDIA says these options can benefit older games, while most modern games do not need them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Legacy option category | Why an older game might need it | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Anisotropic filtering | Can improve clarity of textures viewed at an angle when a title lacks adequate filtering | Change it per game and verify that textures improve without introducing compatibility problems |
| Texture filtering | Can alter texture sampling behavior in older rendering engines | Test visual stability and performance in the title’s own scenes |
| Anti-aliasing variants | Can add or correct edge smoothing when an older game provides limited choices | Use only if the title responds correctly; anti-aliasing can increase GPU workload |
| Background application frame rate | Can limit rendering when the game is not the active window | Set it only when background behavior matters to you; it does not directly improve active gameplay |
| PhysX | Provides a compatibility control for titles that use the PhysX pipeline | Leave the game’s expected behavior intact and change it only when troubleshooting that older title |
NVIDIA’s feature announcement says many older games can be enhanced with Control Panel options that correct missing anisotropic filtering, strengthen anti-aliasing, and add more realistic ambient-occlusion shading. That is an explanation of possible benefits, not a guarantee for every game. Compatibility, visual effects, and performance vary by engine. Apply one legacy option at a time, record the original value, and remove the change if the game flickers, crashes, or renders incorrectly.

Why you should not use Project G-Assist as a generic low-end optimizer
Project G-Assist is a separate NVIDIA feature with substantially higher hardware requirements than the general NVIDIA App workflow described above. NVIDIA’s March 25, 2025 requirements specify a desktop GeForce RTX 30, 40, or 50 Series GPU with at least 12 GB of VRAM, a supported CPU, 6.5 GB of disk space for System Assistant, and GeForce driver 572.83 or later. G-Assist also briefly uses GPU resources while processing a request.
Those figures describe G-Assist, not the minimum requirements for NVIDIA App and not a promise of better performance on an older PC. Do not infer that an older or low-end system qualifies for G-Assist simply because it can install NVIDIA App. For this guide’s purpose, use the Graphics panel and the game’s own settings; treat G-Assist eligibility as a separate question.
Troubleshooting common problems
The game looks worse after Optimize
Return to the game’s entry in Graphics, inspect the listed changes, and restore the individual quality settings you care about. You can leave performance-oriented changes such as a lower effect quality while restoring a texture or interface setting if the game permits it. If you cannot identify the change, revert the profile and repeat the process one option at a time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPerformance did not improve
Confirm that the game actually adopted the new values, then repeat the same test scene. If lowering resolution and effects has little effect, investigate a CPU-side limit or another source of stutter. If visual reductions do help but not enough, continue with the game’s most demanding GPU options rather than repeatedly pressing Optimize.
The app recommendation seems unsuitable
Remember that NVIDIA’s recommendation is calculated from detected GPU, CPU, and display information; it is not a universal low-end preset. A laptop display, external monitor, unusual resolution, or game-specific feature can make a reasonable general recommendation look wrong for your preference. Keep the change per game and manually adjust the setting that conflicts with your goal.
A modern game has no useful Legacy Settings
That is expected. NVIDIA says legacy options are aimed at older games and are not necessary or applicable for most modern titles. Use the game’s current graphics controls and the standard Graphics panel instead of forcing legacy overrides.
The game becomes unstable after a driver-level change
Undo the last per-game legacy or driver setting first. If the problem disappears, leave that override disabled for the title. Avoid escalating to Global Settings while a compatibility issue is unresolved, because a global override can affect unrelated games.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you recorded the game’s original settings and selected a repeatable test scene?
- Did you open Graphics, select the specific game, and move the slider toward the priority you actually have?
- Did you review Optimize’s proposed changes before applying them?
- Did you start with per-game scope instead of changing every game?
- After testing, did you separate CPU-related game latency from GPU-related render latency?
- For an older title, did you use Legacy Settings only when the game benefits from them and test each override?
- Are you treating G-Assist’s 12 GB VRAM, 6.5 GB System Assistant storage, and driver 572.83 requirements as separate from NVIDIA App?
- Have you avoided assuming a guaranteed FPS increase where no exact benchmark exists for your game, hardware, resolution, driver, and settings?
Bottom line
Use NVIDIA App as a personalized, reversible starting point: select a game in Graphics, favor Performance when necessary, inspect Optimize’s changes, and test the title before touching Global Settings. Then let the bottleneck determine the next move—reduce demanding visual options for a GPU limit, investigate simulation-heavy work for a CPU limit, and reserve Legacy Settings for older games that actually need them. Software tuning can improve a constrained system’s consistency, but it cannot replace hardware when the measured component has no remaining headroom.
