The fastest Magento stores in 2026 are built as a measured, layered system. Start by matching your Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source release to supported PHP, Nginx, PHP-FPM, MySQL, and Elasticsearch or OpenSearch versions. Then make application and full-page caches effective, keep static assets cacheable, size Redis or Valkey and PHP workers for the real workload, and measure browser, API, and backend behavior after every change.
Do not treat a frontend minification tweak as a substitute for an uncached catalog page, an undersized database, or a slow connection to a remote cache. Adobe’s documentation describes caching as one of the most effective performance improvements, but cache design, private-content handling, search, database capacity, and network latency determine whether that improvement reaches shoppers.

1. Establish the supported baseline before changing performance settings
Record the exact product and patch level first. Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce do not share one permanent compatibility matrix: PHP, search-engine, database, Redis/Valkey, Nginx, and Varnish support can change between releases. Check the system requirements for your precise release before upgrading or standardizing an infrastructure component.
Identify the edition, release, and operating mode
- Record whether the store runs Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce, the complete 2.4.x version and patch level, and the PHP version.
- Record the web server, PHP-FPM version, MySQL version, Elasticsearch or OpenSearch version, cache backend, search configuration, and whether a CDN or edge proxy is present.
- Check the application mode. Production mode avoids development-time overhead and should be used for a live store.
- Inventory extensions, payment integrations, custom modules, theme packages, cron jobs, import feeds, and scheduled indexers. A slow extension can dominate an otherwise well-tuned stack.
Adobe’s production recommendations include PHP with Nginx and PHP-FPM, MySQL, and Elasticsearch or OpenSearch. They also recommend Varnish for production full-page caching and Redis for sessions and, in appropriate deployments, the default cache. Treat those recommendations as a starting architecture, not permission to use arbitrary versions: release-specific requirements remain authoritative.

Create a before-and-after measurement record
Capture a representative uncached and warm-cache request for the home page, a category page, a product page, search results, cart, checkout, customer account, and the most important GraphQL operations. Record time to first byte, status code, cache headers, application logs, database time, PHP-FPM queueing, CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network latency to every remote service.
For browser performance, test a realistic mobile and desktop profile with a clean session and a returning session. Record the Core Web Vitals and the page elements responsible for layout shifts, largest-content rendering, and interaction delay. There is no universal Magento response-time or Core Web Vitals figure that applies to every store; catalog size, extensions, traffic mix, cache hit rate, and hardware make store-specific baselines essential.
2. Optimize in cache-layer order
Adobe describes four useful layers: application caching, HTTP full-page caching, optional second-level caching, and static-content caching. Work through them in that order. A fast browser cannot compensate for a database query that runs on every request, and a full-page cache can hide a capacity problem until a purge or cache miss causes an outage.
Application cache
Enable the cache types required by the release and verify their status after deployments. The Magento CLI commands below are commonly used in production workflows; confirm command behavior against the exact release and run them during a controlled deployment:
php bin/magento cache:status
php bin/magento cache:enable
php bin/magento cache:flush
Use a flush deliberately. It removes cached data and can create a surge of uncached requests. Prefer targeted invalidation or a planned warm-up when your deployment process supports it. Monitor hit behavior immediately after a flush.
HTTP full-page cache
Full-page caching stores complete public responses so PHP and the database do not rebuild the same category, product, or CMS page for every visitor. Adobe recommends Varnish as the production reverse proxy. Magento’s built-in mechanism can use filesystem, database, or Redis storage, but it is not equivalent to a properly deployed edge or reverse-proxy layer for a busy storefront.

Optional second-level cache
A second-level cache can reduce repeated reads that are not served by the full-page cache. Use it only after measuring the application and database behavior. Extra layers add invalidation paths, memory consumption, and operational work; they should solve a measured bottleneck rather than be enabled by default.
Static-content cache
Serve versioned CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, and other static files with long-lived browser and edge cache headers. Deploy generated assets in production mode and invalidate them when the content version changes. Keep source maps and development bundles out of the public production path unless they are explicitly needed.
3. Make Varnish full-page caching effective
Varnish improves performance only when the responses that matter are actually cacheable. Adobe warns that a layout block marked cacheable="false" makes the entire page uncacheable. A single custom block can therefore turn a high-value category or product route into a PHP and database request for every visitor.
Protect catalog and CMS cacheability
- Review layout XML and custom modules for
cacheable="false", unnecessary session checks, and blocks that inject user-specific data into otherwise public pages. - Keep category, product, and CMS pages cacheable. Do not disable full-page caching as a shortcut for fixing a block that should have been moved to private content.
- Confirm that the reverse proxy receives cacheable status codes and does not bypass on avoidable cookies, authorization headers, query strings, or response headers.
- Test both a cold request and a warm request. A warm hit should avoid PHP execution for the public page; verify this with response headers and server metrics rather than assuming it.
Handle invalidation and purging safely
Catalog, price, stock, CMS, and configuration changes need predictable invalidation. A purge that removes the entire cache can cause a thundering herd: many shoppers miss at once and all requests reach PHP and MySQL. Use tagged or route-specific invalidation where supported, warm critical routes after a deployment, and rate-limit automated crawlers that would otherwise refill the cache inefficiently.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDo not confuse public and private content
Catalog and category content can be shared; carts, wishlists, customer names, addresses, and other account data must remain user-specific. Adobe recommends limiting private content to a small portion of the page. Render the public shell through the full-page cache and fetch personalized fragments separately through Magento’s private-content mechanism or an equivalent authenticated request. Never place a customer identifier, cart token, or authorization-dependent response in a shared cache.
4. Size Redis or Valkey and separate its responsibilities
Redis or a compatible service is commonly used for sessions and, in suitable releases, the default application cache. In a multi-server or scaling deployment, Adobe recommends a separate Redis instance for sessions and another for the default cache. Separation prevents a session spike, eviction event, or cache flush from affecting unrelated data.

Estimate memory from store behavior
Redis memory must cover the caches assigned to it, not just the current key count. Block-cache growth is driven by the number of pages, SKUs, and store views. Session memory depends on session duration, concurrent shoppers, and the cart-abandonment policy. Measure peak usage and eviction counters, then leave headroom for catalog growth and deployment churn.
| Redis/Valkey workload | What drives capacity | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Sessions | Concurrent users, session lifetime, cart-abandonment retention | Used memory, evictions, expired keys, connection count |
| Default/application cache | Number of cache types, configuration size, extension data, invalidation frequency | Hit rate, evictions, misses after deployment, latency |
| Block or page-related data | Pages, SKUs, store views, personalization variants | Key growth, fragmentation, hot keys, purge duration |
Treat the network as part of cache performance
A remote Redis service is not free capacity. Every cache read and write crosses the network. Adobe specifically cautions that the link between web nodes and Redis must be sufficient to avoid read/write bottlenecks. Measure round-trip latency, packet loss, bandwidth, connection saturation, and failover behavior from the actual PHP-FPM hosts. Keep cache services in the same low-latency network zone when possible.
Verify release compatibility
The cache-backend reference contains release-specific caveats, including a note that Redis is not supported for Adobe Commerce 2.4.9 or certain later patch levels. Do not standardize a Redis or Valkey backend from a generic deployment guide; verify the exact release documentation and test upgrades in a staging environment.
5. Tune PHP-FPM, the database, and search together
PHP-FPM workers
Set the worker pool from measured concurrency, available memory, and request time. Too few workers create a queue even when CPU is idle; too many workers exhaust memory and force swapping. Track active and idle workers, listen-queue length, process restarts, slow requests, and peak memory per worker. Recheck the pool after enabling expensive extensions, changing the theme, or adding a feed importer.
Use OPcache in production and verify that its memory and interned-string settings accommodate the deployed codebase. After a code deployment, restart or reload PHP-FPM according to your process so stale workers do not retain old code or configuration.
MySQL
Find the queries behind slow uncached pages, admin grids, imports, and checkout rather than increasing database size blindly. Use slow-query logs and query plans to identify missing indexes, unbounded collections, N+1 extension queries, and report jobs competing with storefront traffic. Keep database memory, temporary tables, connection limits, and storage I/O aligned with peak concurrency.

Run indexers on their supported schedule and inspect their status after imports:
php bin/magento indexer:status
php bin/magento indexer:reindex
Do not launch a full reindex during peak traffic without understanding its lock, CPU, and I/O impact. Fix a repeatedly invalid indexer or an import that triggers excessive invalidation instead of relying on repeated manual reindexing.
Elasticsearch or OpenSearch
Search latency affects search pages, layered navigation, autocomplete, and sometimes product-selection workflows. Confirm that the engine version is supported by the Magento release, size its heap and disk for the index, and monitor query latency, rejected requests, garbage collection, and disk watermarks. Keep indexing load separate from storefront capacity where the traffic level justifies it.
6. Improve frontend performance without masking backend problems
Once cache hits and backend timings are stable, optimize what the browser downloads and renders.

- Remove unused JavaScript and CSS from routes that do not need them.
- Defer non-critical scripts and third-party tags until after the primary content is usable.
- Preload only genuinely critical fonts or hero images; excessive preloads compete with HTML and API requests.
- Serve responsive, compressed images in dimensions close to their rendered size and reserve layout space to prevent shifts.
- Use HTTP caching and a CDN or edge layer for versioned static assets, while keeping purge behavior aligned with deployment versions.
Check theme and extension cost
Compare a route with optional modules disabled in a staging clone, then profile the specific extension or observer responsible for extra SQL, JavaScript, or API calls. Do not remove checkout, payment, tax, or security functionality solely because it adds work; establish whether the work is required and whether it can be deferred or cached safely.
7. Keep GraphQL and APIs cache-friendly
GraphQL responses can be cached, but each cache-key dimension creates another variant. Adobe’s GraphQL caching documentation warns that unnecessary variables and headers can produce too many unique keys and reduce hit rates.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Audit cache-key factors
- List every variable, header, cookie, store code, currency, customer group, and authorization condition used in a cache key.
- Remove dimensions that do not change the response.
- Separate public queries from customer-specific queries rather than adding a customer identifier to every request.
- Normalize equivalent requests so different parameter ordering or redundant values do not create separate entries.
- Measure hit rate and key cardinality before and after each change.
Never cache an authenticated response in a public namespace. If a query includes cart, account, pricing entitlement, or address data, handle it as private content even when part of the page is public.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Choose an architecture that matches traffic and availability
A single server, a Varnish front end, and a multi-node two-tier design solve different problems. Compare them on cache-hit potential, invalidation complexity, private-content handling, operational overhead, horizontal scaling, release compatibility, cache-service latency, and observability.
| Architecture | Strengths | Risks and limits | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single Commerce node with built-in cache | Low operational complexity; fewer network hops; simple troubleshooting | Limited redundancy and vertical scaling; cache flushes compete directly with storefront capacity | Small stores with predictable traffic and a tested recovery plan |
| Commerce nodes behind Varnish | High public-page hit potential; lower PHP and database load; can scale web nodes | Requires precise purge rules, health checks, cookie handling, and private-content design | Production stores where catalog and CMS traffic dominates |
| Multi-node Commerce with separate cache services | Horizontal capacity, failure isolation, and independent session/application-cache scaling | More network latency, deployment coordination, monitoring, and invalidation paths | Stores with sustained concurrency or multiple web nodes |
| Two-tier Varnish with SSL-terminating load balancing | High availability and an additional caching tier for high traffic | Highest operational complexity; purge consistency and failover testing are mandatory | High-traffic stores that can justify dedicated operations and redundancy |
Use the CPU heuristic carefully
Adobe’s hardware guidance says one CPU core can serve around two, sometimes up to four, Commerce requests effectively. This is a planning heuristic, not a promise. Request complexity, cache-hit rate, extensions, database behavior, and search load can move the result substantially. Validate the ratio with a load test that uses your routes, catalog, customer mix, and cache state.
9. A practical 2026 optimization procedure
- Document the stack. Capture edition, patch level, supported runtime versions, cache topology, search engine, database, node count, and traffic peaks.
- Measure representative routes. Record cold and warm public pages, private pages, checkout, search, and critical GraphQL operations.
- Fix support and operating mode. Align PHP, Nginx, PHP-FPM, MySQL, and search versions with the release requirements; run production mode and remove development tooling from live traffic.
- Verify application caches. Check cache status, investigate disabled types, and avoid broad flushes during peak periods.
- Prove full-page hits. Configure Varnish for production, test category, product, and CMS routes, and inspect headers and backend metrics for real hits.
- Audit uncacheable blocks. Search layout XML and custom modules for
cacheable="false"; move customer-specific output into private content. - Separate and size cache services. Allocate Redis or Valkey for sessions and application data as appropriate for the release, measure memory and network latency, and set eviction alerts.
- Tune PHP-FPM and MySQL. Use queue, worker, slow-query, and memory data to change one limit at a time.
- Stabilize search and indexers. Confirm supported search versions, monitor indexing, and schedule heavy jobs away from traffic peaks.
- Optimize static delivery and the theme. Reduce critical assets, compress images, defer non-essential scripts, and use versioned cache headers.
- Review GraphQL keys. Remove unnecessary variables and headers, and isolate authenticated responses.
- Load-test the intended architecture. Test cache misses, cache purges, traffic spikes, node failure, Redis failure, and database pressure before calling the change complete.
10. Troubleshoot common Magento performance failures
Category and product pages are slow for every visitor
- Check whether Varnish is configured and reachable.
- Inspect the response for bypass cookies, authorization headers, unexpected query strings, or a non-cacheable status.
- Search layout XML and modules for
cacheable="false". - Measure the uncached PHP and database time; a cache miss that is itself slow still needs backend work.
The store slows after a cache flush
- Expect a temporary cold-cache load increase and watch PHP-FPM queues, CPU, database connections, and Redis latency.
- Warm only critical public routes with a controlled process.
- Replace broad flushes with targeted invalidation where possible.
Redis latency rises during traffic peaks
- Check network round-trip time and bandwidth from every web node.
- Look for memory pressure, evictions, fragmentation, hot keys, and excessive connection churn.
- Separate sessions from application cache if they compete for memory or command throughput.
- Confirm that the selected backend is supported by the exact Commerce patch level.
GraphQL cache hits are unexpectedly low
- Compare cache keys for requests that should be identical.
- Remove redundant variables and headers.
- Separate public catalog queries from customer-specific operations.
- Check whether a currency, store view, customer group, or authorization dimension is genuinely required before retaining it.
Performance deteriorates after a catalog or theme change
- Compare page count, SKU count, store views, asset size, and cache-key cardinality with the previous baseline.
- Inspect new observers, blocks, GraphQL fields, and third-party scripts.
- Repeat cold and warm measurements; cache growth and invalidation frequency often change with catalog structure.
11. Ongoing performance governance
Performance is a release discipline, not a one-time tuning exercise. Keep a dashboard for cache-hit rates, uncached response time, PHP-FPM queueing, database slow queries, search latency, Redis memory and evictions, invalidation duration, error rates, and Core Web Vitals. Set alerts for deviations from your own baseline rather than an arbitrary universal target.
Re-test after extensions, theme changes, catalog growth, new store views, pricing-rule changes, search upgrades, and traffic-pattern changes. Include failure drills for cache loss, a web-node outage, a database connection surge, and a full deployment purge. The correct 2026 architecture is the one that keeps public pages cacheable, private data isolated, backend queues bounded, and recovery predictable under your store’s measured workload.
