Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
The reliable way to speed up Drupal on a VPS is to measure first, then improve the layer that is actually limiting you. Record separate results for anonymous cached, anonymous uncached, and authenticated traffic; confirm that Drupal, PHP, the operating system, and extensions are supported and patched; keep Drupal’s Internal Page Cache and Dynamic Page Cache enabled in production; enable PHP OPcache; and tune PHP-FPM, the database, storage, and delivery only after measurements identify a bottleneck. Redis or Memcached can reduce database-backed cache work, while a CDN or reverse proxy can remove cacheable anonymous traffic from the VPS. These tools solve different problems, so adding all of them without a test plan often increases complexity without improving response time.
Start with a representative performance baseline
A single synthetic request cannot describe a Drupal site. Sessions, cache contexts, invalidation, authenticated users, Views, and contributed modules can make two pages with the same URL execute very differently. Capture a baseline before changing configuration and keep the test setup so every later result is comparable.
Record the platform and traffic mix
- Drupal core version, enabled modules, theme, and deployment mode.
- PHP version, PHP extensions, OPcache status, and PHP-FPM pool settings.
- Web server and version (for example, Nginx), database engine and version, VPS CPU and RAM, storage type, and network capacity.
- Whether Drupal caches are cold or warm, whether a session cookie is present, and whether the request is anonymous or authenticated.
- The test method, client location, concurrency, request count, and time window. Repeat tests at a similar traffic level instead of comparing an idle server with a busy one.
Measure both central and tail latency
Report median response time and a tail percentile such as the 95th or 99th percentile, plus time to first byte (TTFB). A median can look healthy while a small but important group of visitors waits on a saturated PHP-FPM pool or a slow database query. Also capture cache HIT/MISS state, PHP-FPM active and queued workers, database slow queries and latency, CPU, memory pressure, swap activity, disk I/O, and network utilization.
Use a three-case test matrix
| Case | What it reveals | Important controls |
|---|---|---|
| Anonymous, warm cache | How well reusable output is served without PHP and database work | Prime the cache first; verify the response’s Drupal cache header |
| Anonymous, cold or bypassed cache | Origin cost of rendering a page for the first time | Record PHP-FPM, database, and storage metrics during the request |
| Authenticated or session request | Personalized rendering, cache-context variation, and uncached work | Use a test account and record the session state; do not compare it with a public-page HIT |
Run the same URLs and request sequence after each change. Warm and cold runs answer different questions and should never be merged into one score.

Verify VPS and Drupal platform support
Drupal’s web-server requirements guidance, updated 13 September 2026, directs administrators to the latest supported PHP release and describes Nginx as a good fit for high concurrency, performance, and low memory use. Treat support status as a performance prerequisite: an old PHP or operating-system package can miss engine improvements and security fixes, and unsupported extensions can prevent a clean upgrade.
Patch in a controlled order
- Check the Drupal core requirement for your installed release and select a currently supported PHP branch.
- Update the operating system, PHP, database server, web server, and required PHP extensions in a staging or maintenance window.
- Run Drupal database updates and configuration imports as appropriate for your deployment, then rebuild caches.
- Repeat the baseline tests and inspect logs for deprecations, fatal errors, and extension warnings before changing performance settings.
Keep a rollback package or snapshot. A faster benchmark is not useful if a PHP upgrade breaks an image toolkit, queue worker, or contributed module.
Check filesystem permissions and writable paths
The web user must be able to read the Drupal codebase and write sites/default/files, which stores uploads and generated assets. A read-only files directory can turn an apparently slow image or page request into repeated errors and retries. Verify ownership and permissions with your distribution’s normal tools, and avoid making the entire Drupal tree writable merely to silence a permission error.
Keep Drupal’s production caches enabled and correct
Drupal page requests perform calculations and database retrieval before producing output. Internal Page Cache and Dynamic Page Cache allow compatible requests to reuse completed work. In production, enable both from Configuration > Development > Performance (the exact label can vary slightly by Drupal release), then save and clear caches once.
Understand what each cache can reuse
- Internal Page Cache is intended for pages that can be shared among anonymous visitors.
- Dynamic Page Cache caches renderable portions and responses while respecting cache contexts, tags, and max-age, so pages with some variation can still reuse safe pieces.
- Browser and proxy caching controls how long a client or intermediary may reuse a response. Choose a max-age that matches how quickly content must appear after an edit.
Inspect the x-drupal-cache response header while testing. A MISS followed by a HIT for the same anonymous request is expected; an unexpected MISS on every request indicates a cookie, cache-context variation, disabled cache, or invalidation issue.

Test invalidation, not only speed
- Request an anonymous page twice and confirm the second response is a HIT when the page is cacheable.
- Publish or edit content that appears on that page.
- Request the page again and verify that the changed content appears without manually deleting every cache entry.
- Check a page with a session or personalized block to ensure one user’s data is never served to another user.
Sessions, user-specific cache contexts, permissions, language, and other variations can bypass or split cache entries. Reducing unnecessary variation improves reuse, but removing a context to force a HIT can create incorrect or unsafe output. Correctness comes first.

Enable OPcache and size PHP-FPM from evidence
OPcache removes repeated PHP compilation
PHP OPcache stores compiled bytecode in shared memory, so Drupal does not parse and compile every PHP file for each request. Confirm it is loaded for the FPM SAPI, not only for the command-line binary. Size its memory from the amount of code actually loaded and monitor utilization; a full cache causes restarts or churn that can erase the benefit. During a deployment, invalidate or restart OPcache deliberately so old code is not served alongside new files.
Do not leave development Twig templates, verbose debugging, or automatic rebuild behavior enabled on a production site. Those settings add file and rendering work and can invalidate caches unexpectedly.
Choose PHP-FPM workers without starving the server
Worker count is a memory and concurrency decision, not a universal speed setting. Measure the resident memory of a typical worker under load, reserve RAM for the operating system, database, and any Redis or Memcached process, then set a pool limit that fits the remaining memory. Too few workers create a queue; too many workers trigger swapping and database contention.
| Observation | Likely interpretation | Response |
|---|---|---|
| FPM queue grows while CPU and database are moderate | Pool concurrency is limiting throughput or requests are blocked on I/O | Inspect slow requests and raise workers only if RAM remains available |
| Workers consume most RAM and swap increases | Pool is oversized | Reduce workers, find memory-heavy code, and stop swapping before retesting |
| CPU is saturated with short requests | More workers will not create more CPU | Improve cache HIT rate, reduce application work, or add CPU capacity |
| Long requests hold workers while the database is busy | Backend queries or locks are the bottleneck | Profile queries and transactions before changing the pool |
Apply one pool change at a time, restart or reload FPM as required by your distribution, and watch queue time, error rate, memory, and database latency during the same test sequence.

Choose Redis or Memcached for the cache bins that need it
Drupal’s caching overview lists Redis, Memcached, and Varnish as options for VPS and multi-server deployments. They are not substitutes for OPcache: OPcache accelerates PHP execution, while Redis or Memcached can move Drupal cache-bin traffic away from database tables. Add one only when measurements show database-backed cache reads or writes are a bottleneck.
| Option | Best fit | Trade-offs to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Redis | Sites needing a shared, observable in-memory service and explicit control over persistence and eviction | Consumes RAM, requires service monitoring and access control, and needs careful TTL and eviction settings |
| Memcached | Simple volatile cache storage where losing entries is acceptable and the deployment needs a small operational footprint | Entries disappear on restart or eviction; debugging and multi-purpose data use require discipline |
| Database cache tables | Small or lightly loaded sites where an additional service is not justified | Cache traffic competes with Drupal’s content queries and database I/O |
Move bins selectively
Do not move every bin automatically. Identify high-volume bins from database and application metrics, then place only appropriate ephemeral data in Redis or Memcached. Keep configuration and other data whose persistence or invalidation semantics require it where Drupal expects it. Confirm that the integration supports your Drupal and PHP versions before enabling it.
Set TTLs and eviction with care
Redis documentation warns that Drupal often keeps cache entries indefinitely by default and that an excessively low TTL can hurt performance. A short TTL creates misses and repopulation work; an unlimited lifetime can fill memory and trigger evictions at the worst time. Monitor hit rate, memory use, evictions, connection errors, and rebuild behavior. Test a service restart, a cache rebuild, and content invalidation before production rollout. Treat an unavailable cache service as a planned failure mode: Drupal should fail safely or fall back according to the integration’s documented behavior, not expose stale or personalized data.
Reduce database and application work before adding hardware
Find the expensive request path
Use slow-query logging and application profiling to identify slow Views, entity queries, custom code, and contributed modules. Look for N+1 query patterns, repeated entity loads, unbounded result sets, and code that performs the same calculation on every request. Disable or remove unused modules after checking their dependencies and configuration. A cache backend cannot compensate for a page that always generates unique, expensive work.
Add indexes only for demonstrated plans
An index can turn a table scan into a targeted lookup, but every index consumes storage and slows writes. Capture the actual query and its execution plan, confirm that the proposed index addresses the filter or sort, add it during a controlled change, and compare read latency and write cost. Do not create indexes from column names alone.

Give the database enough memory and fast storage
Reserve RAM for the database buffer pool while leaving enough for PHP-FPM, the operating system, and a cache service. Keep the database on fast, reliable storage and monitor disk latency, queue depth, and available space. If database latency rises when FPM concurrency rises, reducing application concurrency may improve overall response time more than adding workers.
Optimize assets and delivery for anonymous traffic
Use Drupal’s aggregation and responsive images
Enable CSS and JavaScript aggregation in production, then verify that the aggregated files are generated and cacheable. Compress text responses at the web-server or proxy layer. Define responsive image styles for the actual display sizes, use modern image formats where the browser support you require allows them, and lazy-load media below the fold. Large originals increase storage, processing, and network cost even when the page itself is cached.
Recommended Free Tools
Decide between a CDN and a reverse proxy
A CDN distributes cacheable responses and static assets to edge locations; Drupal describes this as offloading much of site delivery to dedicated edge caches. A reverse proxy such as Varnish sits in front of the origin and can serve reusable responses without invoking Drupal. Both can reduce origin traffic, but neither makes a personalized response safe to share.
| Layer | Primary benefit | Invalidation and failure concern | What to observe |
|---|---|---|---|
| OPcache | Faster PHP execution on the origin | Stale bytecode after deployment if not invalidated | Hit rate, memory use, restarts |
| Redis or Memcached | Faster cache-bin access and fewer database cache queries | Eviction, service outage, or unsuitable TTLs | Hit rate, evictions, latency, connections |
| Reverse proxy | Serves cacheable responses before PHP | Incorrect sharing or stale content after edits | HIT/MISS, age, origin requests |
| CDN | Edge delivery of public pages and static assets | Propagation delay and rules that accidentally cache private responses | Edge hit ratio, origin bandwidth, cache-control headers |
Send authenticated, session-bound, and otherwise personalized responses with strict cache-control rules. Test login, logout, cart-like state, permissions, language, and content edits through every proxy layer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Tune Nginx, storage, and operating-system limits only after measurement
Nginx is often chosen for high concurrency and low memory use, but sensible defaults are safer than copying a generic tuning recipe. Check worker and connection limits against measured concurrent connections, file-descriptor limits, request-body limits, and upstream timeouts. A timeout increase can hide a slow backend rather than fix it.

- Serve static files directly from Nginx where appropriate instead of routing them through PHP.
- Use reliable storage and monitor free space, I/O wait, and filesystem errors.
- Check network utilization and packet loss before attributing slow remote requests to Drupal.
- Use compression for text, but monitor CPU cost when the origin is already CPU-bound.
There is no authoritative universal Drupal requests-per-second or latency number for a VPS. Results depend on Drupal version, modules, theme, database, traffic mix, cache hit rate, PHP workers, storage, and network. Publish your own test setup and measured before-and-after values rather than borrowing a benchmark from a different site.

- Change one layer at a time; rebuild Drupal caches or reload services only when the change requires it.
- Run identical warm-cache and cold-cache tests for all three traffic cases.
- Compare median and tail latency, TTFB, cache HIT/MISS, origin request count, error rate, queue time, PHP-FPM saturation, database latency, memory pressure, and disk I/O.

- Revert immediately if memory pressure, swap, error rates, stale content, or private-data exposure appears.
Site monitoring is part of Drupal’s performance and scalability planning. Keep dashboards and alerts for uptime, response-time percentiles, PHP-FPM queues, database slow queries, cache-service health, disk space, and origin traffic. Performance work is ongoing capacity management, not a one-time list of magic values.
Diagnose common symptoms
Anonymous pages are slow but authenticated pages are normal
Check whether Internal Page Cache and Dynamic Page Cache are enabled, whether a cookie or cache context forces a MISS, and whether a CDN or reverse proxy is bypassing cache. Inspect x-drupal-cache and proxy cache headers before changing PHP-FPM.
Every request is a cache MISS
Look for sessions, personalized blocks, varying headers, an overly short max-age, frequent invalidation, or a proxy rule that strips cacheability headers. Verify that the test client is not sending a session cookie unintentionally.
PHP-FPM is saturated and RAM is nearly full
Reduce worker count or request memory use, then profile long requests and database waits. Adding workers while the host is swapping normally makes tail latency worse.
Redis or Memcached shows low hit rate
Confirm that the intended cache bins are actually using the service, that keys are not being invalidated constantly, and that memory is not forcing evictions. Review TTLs and cache-context variation before allocating more memory.
Content remains stale after publishing
Trace invalidation through Drupal, the reverse proxy, and the CDN. Check cache tags, max-age, purge rules, and edge age. Do not solve stale content by disabling all caching; correct the invalidation path and test again.
