Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Java servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
The fastest way to reduce lag on a Linux Minecraft server is to measure the bottleneck first, then change one control at a time. Tick time and CPU work, Java garbage collection, chunk storage, and network delivery produce different symptoms. Lowering every distance setting or assigning all available RAM can hide one symptom while creating another.
This guide uses Paper’s documented settings and a repeatable Linux workflow. It explains what each distance control changes, how to size the Java heap, when Aikar’s G1GC flags are useful, and how to verify that an adjustment actually helped.
Start with a reproducible baseline
There is no universal “best” configuration. A small survival world with a few players, a mod-heavy server, and a large public server place very different demands on the CPU, memory, storage, and network. Record the conditions under which lag occurs before editing anything.
Record the software and workload
- Server software and exact Paper build.
- Java version and the complete JVM command line.
- Linux distribution and kernel, if relevant to your deployment process.
- Player count during normal play and during the reported lag.
- World size, number of worlds, active farms, redstone machines, and plugins.
- Whether players are exploring and generating new chunks or staying in already-generated areas.
- Storage type and free space, plus whether the world is on a busy or network-mounted volume.
Define the test event
Use the same player route or event for each comparison: for example, have one or more players travel through an ungenerated region for five minutes, then repeat the route after each change. Note the start and end time, player count, and whether the test includes combat, farms, or mass teleportation. A defined workload is more useful than an occasional subjective report that “the server feels slow.”

Capture the measurements
| Measurement | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Tick timing | Average and worst tick behavior during the test | Shows whether the server is completing its game loop on time. |
| CPU | Total utilization, per-core saturation, and load during lag | A single busy core can limit tick processing even when overall utilization looks moderate. |
| Heap and GC | Heap occupancy, allocation pressure, and pause duration | Distinguishes memory pressure from ordinary CPU work. |
| Chunk activity | Concurrent generation or loading and storage latency | Exploration can be limited by disk I/O rather than by entity ticking. |
| Network | Traffic, packet loss or retransmission symptoms, and affected players | Separates delivery problems from a server that is late producing ticks. |
On Linux, ordinary observation tools can provide context alongside your server profiler: top or htop for CPU and process memory, free -h for available memory and swap, iostat for disk wait, and ss for socket statistics. Take readings during the same test event rather than relying on an idle-server snapshot.
Identify the kind of lag before changing settings
Tick or CPU-bound lag
When the server cannot finish a tick in time, players see delayed block actions, mobs that move in bursts, and commands that execute late. High CPU use during the exact event points toward entity AI, redstone, plugin work, chunk generation, or another workload on the tick thread. Distance settings can reduce work, but they will not fix a plugin that performs an expensive operation every tick.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMemory pressure and garbage-collection pauses
Heap occupancy that climbs rapidly, frequent collections, or noticeable stop-the-world pauses indicate allocation and GC pressure. Do not infer that the heap is too small from total RAM usage alone: Linux file cache and native allocations also consume memory. Compare heap behavior and pause times with the same player workload before changing -Xms or -Xmx.
Chunk loading and storage delay
Exploration lag that appears while new terrain is generated can coincide with high disk wait and chunk-generation activity. Lowering view distance may reduce how many chunks are requested around players, but it does not turn a slow storage device or an overloaded host into a fast one. Test an already-generated route separately from a fresh-terrain route.
Network delivery or entity traffic
If tick timings remain healthy while clients receive delayed updates, rubber-band, or render large numbers of entities slowly, inspect network behavior and entity delivery. A setting that reduces packets can help this case; it is not a substitute for finding CPU-heavy server work.
Keep Linux’s native network transport enabled
In server.properties, Paper documents use-native-transport=true as providing a performance boost for Linux servers. Leave it enabled unless a controlled test shows a compatibility problem in your deployment.

- Stop the server cleanly so the world and configuration are flushed.
- Open
server.propertiesand locateuse-native-transport. - Set it to
true, save the file, and start the server. - Repeat the same workload used for your baseline and compare tick, CPU, and network observations.
If a plugin, operating-system package, or hosting environment behaves differently with native transport, keep a copy of the previous file, restore the prior value, and document the compatibility finding rather than repeatedly toggling it during an active incident.
Tune view distance and simulation distance independently
Both settings are measured in chunks, but they control different work. Treat them as separate levers and explain the gameplay consequence before applying either one.
| Setting | Paper-documented range or default | Primary effect | Player-visible trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
view-distance |
Default 10 chunks; valid range 3–32 | Radius of world data sent to clients and loaded around players | Players see less distant terrain and may receive chunks over a smaller area. |
simulation-distance |
Valid range 3–32 | Radius in which living entities are updated | Mobs, farms, and other living entities update over a smaller radius. |
entity-broadcast-range-percentage |
Percentage control; exact deployment value is workload-dependent | How close entities must be before they are sent to clients | Entities disappear at shorter distances when the value is reduced. |
Adjust view distance for chunk and network pressure
Paper’s reference default is view-distance=10, with values from 3 through 32. A larger radius increases the amount of world data that must be loaded and delivered. Begin with a conservative value suited to the number of players and the available headroom, then raise it only when tick timing, storage, and network measurements remain healthy.
Adjust simulation distance for entity and AI work
simulation-distance determines where living entities are updated, not simply what terrain a player can see. Lowering it often changes mob farms, breeding areas, and other gameplay more directly than lowering view distance. If players complain that farms stop working at their usual AFK location, check simulation distance before assuming a plugin is broken.
Apply the settings safely
- Make a dated backup of
server.properties. - Change only one of
view-distanceorsimulation-distance. - Use an integer from 3 to 32; start near the lower end only when your measured workload requires it.
- Restart cleanly, run the same route or event, and record tick timing, CPU, chunk activity, and player-visible behavior.
- Keep the change only if it resolves the measured bottleneck without an unacceptable gameplay cost.
Use entity broadcast range as a targeted network control
entity-broadcast-range-percentage is separate from both distance settings. Paper describes it as controlling how close entities need to be before they are sent to clients and warns that higher values can cause more lag because entities are rendered from farther away.
Use this control when entity packets or client rendering are part of the measured problem. A lower value can reduce the number of distant entities delivered to each player, but entities will become invisible sooner as the player moves away. Do not use it to mask a CPU-heavy redstone machine, an unbounded plugin task, or a server that is already missing ticks; diagnose those causes directly.

Size the Java heap deliberately
Assigning every available gigabyte to Minecraft is not an optimization. Linux needs memory for the kernel, file cache, native libraries, and other services. Leave operating headroom so the host does not enter swap or force processes to compete for memory.
Understand what heap values mean
-Xms sets the initial heap and -Xmx sets the maximum heap. A fixed pair such as -Xms10G -Xmx10G makes the configured heap size explicit, but 10 GB is an example from Paper’s Aikar’s flags documentation, not a universal requirement. Size the heap from observed occupancy and allocation behavior for your player count, worlds, plugins, and exploration pattern.
Paper’s documentation notes that Minecraft has an extremely high allocation rate, “ranging to at least 800MB/second on a 30 player server.” That figure is documentation context, not a promise that every server with 30 players will allocate at that rate. Your GC logs and repeatable test are the authority for your workload.
Use a G1GC-oriented baseline when appropriate
Paper’s Aikar’s flags example includes these core options:
-Xms10G -Xmx10G -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:+ParallelRefProcEnabled -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200
The example also contains additional G1 settings. Treat the documented command line as a starting point, not a guarantee. Keep the heap within the physical memory budget, reserve room for Linux and native allocations, and verify pause behavior after applying it. Paper explicitly warns: “However, more memory does not mean better performance above a certain point.”
Recognize when heap changes are wrong
- If the heap is rarely occupied and GC pauses are already short, adding RAM is unlikely to improve tick time.
- If the host begins swapping after increasing
-Xmx, undo the increase immediately; swap activity can make latency much worse. - If pauses remain long at a reasonable heap size, investigate allocation-heavy plugins, chunk generation, and entity counts instead of continually raising the ceiling.
- Keep the exact JVM arguments in your baseline record so a later change can be attributed to the heap or collector rather than to an unnoticed command-line difference.
Run a one-variable optimization cycle
Every comparison should use the same software build, world state, route, player count, and observation window as far as practical. Restart cleanly after configuration or JVM changes, and keep rollback copies of both server.properties and the startup command.

- Choose one hypothesis. For example, high disk wait during exploration suggests reducing chunk demand, while high entity traffic with healthy ticks suggests testing broadcast range.
- Change one setting. Do not alter both distance values, heap size, and plugin configuration in the same restart.
- Reproduce the event. Use the same route, farm activity, or player scenario that produced the baseline.
- Compare all relevant metrics. Check tick timing, GC pauses, heap occupancy, CPU saturation, disk wait, network traffic, and the gameplay effect.
- Decide and document. Keep the change, revert it, or schedule a longer test. Record the date, value, workload, and observed result.
| Observed pattern | First controlled test | What success looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Tick delay with a saturated core | Profile entity, plugin, redstone, or chunk work; then test a modest simulation-distance reduction. | Lower tick time without breaking required farm or mob behavior. |
| Frequent long GC pauses | Review heap occupancy and allocation rate; test a deliberate G1GC heap size while retaining Linux headroom. | Shorter or less frequent pauses without swap or excessive resident memory. |
| Lag only while exploring new terrain | Measure storage wait and generation activity; test a lower view distance for the same route. | Fewer chunk-delivery stalls with acceptable visibility. |
| Healthy ticks but too much entity traffic | Test a lower entity broadcast range percentage. | Lower delivery or rendering pressure, with entities still visible at the distance players need. |
| Linux deployment shows avoidable transport overhead | Confirm use-native-transport=true, then repeat the baseline. |
Improved network behavior without compatibility errors. |
Practical tuning playbooks
CPU-bound survival server
Confirm that the lag event coincides with high CPU use and missed ticks. Identify whether players are loading chunks, activating farms, or triggering a plugin action. A lower simulation distance is the targeted distance change for living-entity and AI work; a lower view distance is more relevant when chunk loading and delivery dominate. Apply one change, then verify that the farm or mob behavior players depend on still occurs.
Exploration and chunk-generation lag
Separate generated-terrain travel from new-terrain travel. If storage wait rises only during generation, reduce the amount of surrounding world data requested by testing view distance and avoid changing simulation distance unless entity ticking is also implicated. Schedule pre-generation or storage changes as separate projects; a distance setting cannot remove the cost of generating complex terrain.
Entity-heavy area or public hub
Count the entities and identify whether the problem is server tick work, packet delivery, or client rendering. If ticks are healthy but clients receive too many distant entities, test entity-broadcast-range-percentage. If the tick thread is overloaded, remove or redesign the entity source rather than relying on packet suppression.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Memory-constrained VPS
Check available host memory and swap before increasing the heap. Use a measured -Xms/-Xmx pair and G1GC options appropriate to the workload, leaving room for Linux and other services. A smaller, stable heap is preferable to a larger setting that causes host-wide memory pressure.
Many concurrent players
Test at representative peak concurrency, not only with one administrator online. More players multiply chunk requests, entity updates, network delivery, and plugin events. Keep view distance and simulation distance at values that preserve headroom during the peak test, then raise them only if the same measurements remain within budget.
Common mistakes and recovery steps
Changing every setting at once
You cannot tell which adjustment helped, and a gameplay regression becomes difficult to reverse. Restore the last known-good files, return to the baseline workload, and reapply one hypothesis at a time.

Confusing visual range with entity ticking
Lowering view distance may leave a mob farm lagging because living entities are still being updated inside simulation distance. Conversely, lowering simulation distance can stop a farm while leaving clients receiving a large amount of terrain data. Match the setting to the measured resource.
Overallocating RAM
A large -Xmx can starve Linux, native allocations, file cache, or another service. If free memory collapses or swap starts during the test, stop the server cleanly, restore the previous heap values, and retest with a smaller budget.
Using entity broadcast as a cure-all
Reducing packets does not repair a plugin that spends excessive CPU time or a storage device that stalls chunk generation. Recheck tick, disk, and network measurements before selecting this control.
Ignoring rollback and clean restarts
Keep dated copies of server.properties and the JVM startup line. Stop the server through its normal shutdown path after configuration changes, and confirm the running process uses the intended values rather than assuming a text-file edit was loaded.
Maintain the result
Performance tuning is a process, not a one-time number. Keep a short change log containing the server version, Paper build, Java version, player count, world state, changed value, and before-and-after observations. Re-test after adding a plugin, expanding a world, changing storage, or increasing peak concurrency. A value that is safe for a quiet test server can become the bottleneck after a new world or a large player event is introduced.
