You can opt out of people-search sites yourself for free: find each listing, follow that site’s removal instructions, submit any required verification, and repeat for other sites. The work is one site at a time, and removal may be partial or temporary. California residents also have a state platform for sending a request to registered data brokers.

The practical challenge is not finding one universal form; there is no standard process across all sites in the FTC’s guidance. Instead, treat this as a repeatable routine: identify a listing, use the site’s own instructions, record what happened, and check again later. A site-level opt-out can reduce what that site sells, but it is not the same as erasing every copy of your information from the internet or from public records.

What an opt-out does—and what it cannot do

People-search sites are a type of data broker. They may combine information purchased from other brokers with public-facing social media and federal, state, and local public records. Listings can include current and former addresses, phone numbers, relatives, property records, and other personal details. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains how these sites and their opt-outs work in What To Know About People Search Sites That Sell Your Information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An opt-out generally asks a site to stop selling information it already has about you. It does not necessarily remove every detail from that site, erase the underlying government record, or remove copies held by other sites. For example, a site might allow you to hide an address or phone number while keeping other information, such as sex-offender status. So, after submitting a request, distinguish between a profile being removed from public search, particular details being withheld, and information no longer being sold. The exact result depends on what the site’s process offers.

Information can return when public records change, and it may still appear in reports about relatives, neighbors, or associates. A site-level request also does not delete a record from the government website where it is publicly available. If you find the same detail in several places, each site or source may need to be considered separately; submitting one request does not automatically reach the others. The FTC describes the manual process as free, but says it can take time because requests must be made to individual sites.

These limits matter when setting expectations. A successful request is not necessarily a permanent or comprehensive deletion, and the cited FTC guidance does not promise a particular success rate. Nor does it establish a universal U.S. right to remove every data-broker record. The supported expectation is narrower: many people-search sites offer a free opt-out, the steps differ from site to site, and you may need to repeat the process if a listing returns.

How to opt out site by site

1. Find your listings

Search people-search sites for your name and other identifying details. The FTC suggests starting with information such as a phone number or address. That can help distinguish your profile from another person with the same or a similar name. Search only for details that help you identify a likely listing; the goal at this stage is to locate the relevant profile, not to submit a request to every site before confirming a match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a record of each site and the profile that appears to match you. Note the details that help you recognize the listing, such as the displayed name or address, so you can return to the correct page when completing the site’s opt-out. A simple list or spreadsheet is enough; the FTC guidance does not call for a particular app or paid tool. Starting with a record also makes it easier to notice whether the same listing appears on multiple sites.

Expect the search to be iterative. The FTC says there are many people-search sites, but it gives neither a numeric total nor a complete list to search. You can begin with sites where you have found a result and add others as you encounter them. Finding one listing does not show that every site has your information, just as failing to find one listing does not establish that no other site has a profile.

2. Find the site’s removal instructions

Look on the site for an opt-out link or instructions to remove your information. If they are difficult to locate, search the site’s name together with “opt out” or “remove my information.” The FTC notes that each site may have its own procedure, so do not assume that a request to one site applies to another. The site itself is the place to confirm what it asks you to do and what kind of opt-out it offers.

Pay attention to which profile or information the instructions refer to. A site may ask you to identify a matching listing, and the process could differ from another site’s process. Do not rely on a single set of steps found for a different company as if it were universal. If you cannot find instructions on the site, the FTC’s suggested search terms can help locate them; the FTC does not provide one central form that submits requests to all people-search sites.

3. Submit the request and complete any verification

Follow the site’s instructions to identify the matching profile and submit the opt-out. A site may ask for information to locate your record or verify your identity. The FTC’s general guidance does not establish a standard list of required fields or one universal form; the site determines its process. Review what the site asks for and provide only what its request requires to identify or verify the listing.

Verification is a practical part of the process, not evidence that all sites use the same method. The information needed to distinguish one profile from another may vary, and a site may have a step to confirm that the requester is the person associated with the listing. Read the instructions for the particular site before submitting. If a site’s request is unclear, do not assume that a field required elsewhere is also required here. The FTC guidance supports checking the site’s own instructions, but it does not establish a universal field list, identity-check method, or response deadline.

Keep a note of what you submitted and when, as well as any confirmation or status the site provides. That record helps you know whether you have already sent a request for this profile and whether you need to revisit it. It also keeps an opt-out from becoming a vague memory that is hard to verify when you check again.

4. Repeat for other sites

Submit a separate request to each site where you find a listing. Removing one profile does not address profiles on other sites or copies held elsewhere. The FTC confirms that many people-search sites exist but does not give a numeric total or a success rate for manual opt-outs. Consequently, the work can be time-consuming: search, locate instructions, submit, and repeat rather than expecting one request to clean up every broker’s copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think in terms of sites and profiles, not just the personal detail you want hidden. For example, finding an address on one people-search site does not mean a request there also reaches another site that displays the same address. Likewise, an opt-out may not remove information held by a government source or a report connected to a relative or associate. The FTC’s description of data sources and the limits of opt-outs explains why the same information can have more than one route into a listing.

5. Track requests and check again

Keep a simple log with the site name, profile, date submitted, confirmation or status, and a reminder to revisit. Check periodically; if information appears again, submit a new request. The FTC recommends periodic checks but does not prescribe a particular interval. Choose a reminder that makes the task manageable, rather than treating any specific monthly, quarterly, or annual schedule as an official requirement.

When you check, distinguish a returned profile from a new or different listing. Compare the site and the profile details with what you recorded, then use that site’s instructions again if the listing matches. If a detail remains after the opt-out, remember that the result may have been partial rather than a failed request: some sites may hide an address or phone number while retaining other categories. Your log can capture what the site said it did, but the FTC does not guarantee that every site will provide a particular kind of confirmation.

Manual requests or California’s DROP?

California residents have an additional option: the free Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP). Rather than submitting a request separately to each participating registered data broker, an eligible resident can create a profile and submit one request through the state platform. DROP is not a request to every people-search site on the internet; its scope is registered data brokers participating under California’s mechanism.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The two routes solve different parts of the task. A manual opt-out is handled under the individual site’s process and can be used where that site offers one. DROP centralizes a request for participating registered brokers, but it has a residency requirement, a state matching process, and its own timing. California residents may consider using the platform while still recognizing that it does not necessarily replace a separate site-level request for a site outside its scope.

Consideration Manual site-by-site opt-outs California DROP
Who can use it People-search sites may offer opt-outs; follow each site’s eligibility and process. California residents. The state says a resident may live in California or be domiciled there while temporarily elsewhere.
Coverage One site and profile at a time; requests do not automatically reach other sites. One request to registered data brokers participating through the state mechanism; it does not cover every site on the internet.
Effort Search for listings, locate instructions, submit requests, and repeat. Verify eligibility, create a profile, and submit a request through DROP.
Matching and verification Requirements vary by site; the FTC does not identify universal required fields. California provides a state matching workflow. Adding identifying information can improve matching; the state says submitted information is encrypted and hashed for matching.
Timing Depends on the individual site; no general response time is established in the FTC guidance. Brokers began processing requests on August 1, 2026, and must access the mechanism at least every 45 days. DROP status updates may take up to 90 days; that is not a guarantee of deletion.

The table is not a claim that one approach is complete or universally faster. The manual route is available through site-specific opt-outs but involves repeated work. DROP reduces the number of separate submissions for eligible California residents and participating brokers, but the state’s coverage and matching process have defined boundaries. In either case, check the result and understand whether the request applies to the information and organization you intend to address.

How California DROP works and what its limits are

To use DROP, verify that you are eligible as a California resident, create a profile, and submit your request. California describes this workflow on the DROP platform page. The state says brokers began processing DROP requests on August 1, 2026, must access the mechanism at least every 45 days, and that status updates may take up to 90 days. Its page says all listed brokers should have completed their initial download and upload cycle by November 2026. These are processing and status milestones, not a promise that every record will be deleted or that results will appear immediately; consult the state page for current updates.

Those dates describe the platform’s timetable as reported in California’s guidance current through October 11, 2026. The 45-day requirement means brokers must access the mechanism at least that often; it does not mean that a particular person’s request will be completed within 45 days. Similarly, a status update may take as long as 90 days, but that window is not a guarantee that every broker will match, delete, or report a result for every submitted detail. Check California’s current platform information rather than treating a milestone as an individual outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

California explains that DROP does not delete information you gave directly to a business when that business holds it. If the business sold or provided a copy to a data broker, the broker-held copy may be covered. The state also lists legal exceptions, including some public records and records governed by other laws. A broker may report that it could not match submitted details, retain information covered by an exception, or make only a partial deletion when it received some information directly from you. These limits and the state’s matching guidance are described in Personal information and data brokers.

For matching, California says adding identifying information can improve the chance of a match. The platform says the information is encrypted and hashed for matching. That is specific guidance about DROP; it should not be assumed to describe how an independent people-search site handles information submitted through its own opt-out form. In other words, the state’s stated safeguards and matching workflow are not a general promise about every site’s process.

A no-match notice does not necessarily establish that no related data exists; it means the broker could not match the details submitted under its process. California advises that adding identifying information can improve matching, but residents should also account for legal exceptions and partial-deletion situations. The state does not say every request will produce full deletion. The result can depend on what information is matched, where it came from, and whether an exception applies.

The California Department of Justice reported on February 18, 2026, that more than 225,000 Californians had signed up in less than six weeks and that DROP covered more than 500 registered data brokers at that time. Those are dated figures, not current totals. In the same announcement, Attorney General Rob Bonta said: “By using DROP, consumers can tell data brokers to delete and not sell their personal information, decreasing both the amount of data circulating around and the risk that this data is leaked or hacked.” This describes the platform’s intended benefit; it does not quantify an individual’s reduction in risk. See the state’s February 18, 2026 announcement.

How to make the process manageable

  • Track the request, not just the site. Record the profile you found, submission date, and any confirmation or status so you can follow up on the right listing.
  • Expect separate copies. A site-level opt-out does not automatically cover other brokers, a relative’s report, or the public record itself.
  • Revisit your results. Check periodically and submit a fresh request if a listing returns; neither the FTC nor the cited state guidance sets a universal recheck schedule for all sites.
  • Use the appropriate route. If you are a California resident, consider DROP for its participating registered brokers, while recognizing that its scope and exceptions differ from an individual site’s process.

You can make the task smaller by handling it in passes: locate a set of listings, submit the requests for those profiles, and then use your log for follow-up rather than restarting from memory. That is an organizational approach, not an official FTC schedule or a guarantee that one pass will find every listing. Continue to separate site-level results from government records and other copies so you do not mistake a partial change for complete removal.

The FTC’s guide and Georgia’s Attorney General both describe the manual process and its trade-offs. Georgia’s consumer guidance, Protecting Your Privacy Online, also advises checking coverage and cost if considering a paid service. The FTC suggests comparing how many sites a service covers, whether it provides a report, and how often it scans for returned or newly found information; Georgia also advises checking cost and coverage and sharing only the personal information needed. Those are comparison questions, not reasons a service is required. The free manual steps above remain an option, and no physical product is needed to submit the website requests.

What to expect after you submit

After an opt-out, check the status or result using whatever process the site provides, and keep that information in your log. The FTC’s guidance does not set a common response time for people-search sites or say that every one will send the same type of confirmation. Avoid treating silence from one site as proof that the request succeeded or failed; return to that site’s stated instructions for its process.

If a profile remains visible, consider the distinctions the FTC describes: the request may address only certain information, the listing may be associated with another person, or the site may not have removed copies held elsewhere. If information comes back later, the FTC’s recommendation is to submit a new request. A public record that remains available on a government website is not removed by a people-search site opt-out, and a data broker request does not necessarily remove information a business holds directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For California DROP, use the platform’s eligibility, profile, and request workflow, and interpret statuses within the state’s stated timeline. A broker may fail to match submitted details, apply an exception, or make a partial deletion. The mechanism is designed for registered participating brokers, not every online publisher or data holder. If you need to address a profile on a site outside that scope, the site-by-site instructions remain relevant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I opt out of people-search sites for free?

Yes. The FTC describes a free manual process: find a listing, locate the site’s opt-out instructions, submit a request, and repeat on other sites. The work is one site at a time, and the FTC does not give a universal completion time or success rate.

What information do people-search sites show?

Listings may include current or former addresses, phone numbers, relatives, property records, and other personal details. Sites may combine data from other brokers, public-facing social media, and federal, state, and local public records.

Do I have to use the same opt-out form for every site?

No universal form or required field list is established in the FTC’s guidance. Each site may have its own instructions and may ask for information to find or verify the matching profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does opting out remove all information about me?

Not necessarily. An opt-out generally asks a site to stop selling existing information, but it may be partial. A site might hide an address or phone number while retaining other information, and the underlying government record or copies on other sites may remain.

Can my information come back after an opt-out?

Yes. Information may appear again when public records change, and it may still appear in reports about relatives, neighbors, or associates. The FTC recommends checking periodically and submitting a new request if information returns, but it does not prescribe a specific interval.

What is California DROP, and who can use it?

DROP is California’s free Delete Request and Opt-out Platform for eligible California residents to submit a request to participating registered data brokers. The state says a resident may live in California or be domiciled there while temporarily elsewhere. It does not cover every people-search site on the internet.

How long does California DROP take?

According to California’s current guidance cited here, brokers began processing requests on August 1, 2026, must access DROP at least every 45 days, and status updates may take up to 90 days. Those are processing and status milestones, not a guarantee that each record will be deleted. Consult the state platform for updates.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will DROP delete information I gave directly to a business?

California says DROP does not delete information you gave directly to a business when that business holds it. A copy sold or provided to a data broker may be covered. Legal exceptions can also apply, and a broker may report a no-match or partial deletion.

Should I pay for a removal service?

A service is not necessary to make free site-by-site requests. If comparing services, the FTC suggests checking the number of sites covered, whether the service provides a report, and how often it scans for returned or newly found information. Georgia’s Attorney General also advises checking cost and coverage and sharing only the personal information needed.

The Bottom Line

You do not need a removal service to start: search for your listings, use each site’s own opt-out instructions, submit any required verification, and keep a log so you can check again. Expect separate work across sites, possible partial results, and the possibility that listings return. California residents can also use DROP for participating registered data brokers, while keeping its eligibility, matching, timing, and exception limits in mind.
