You can ask a people-search site to suppress its listing of you, but that request does not erase the underlying campaign-finance filing. The practical approach is to find your listings, use each site’s opt-out process, keep track of requests, and check again later. People-search listings and government records are separate: a broker may display information drawn from public records, while the original filing remains available through the relevant government source.
What an opt-out can—and cannot—do
A people-search site compiles information about individuals from sources that can include other brokers, public-facing social media, and government public records. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identifies these services as a type of data broker. Its 1997 report to Congress included political contribution records among examples of public records, and its July 2022 consumer guidance explains how people-search sites gather and display information.
An opt-out is a request to a particular site to stop selling or displaying your existing information under that site’s process. The FTC’s July 2022 guidance puts it this way: “After you opt out, the people search site will stop selling your existing information.” That applies to the site where you made the request; it is not a universal removal request sent to every broker.
- What it may change: whether a specific people-search service continues to sell or show the existing listing covered by your request.
- What it does not change: the government record from which a broker may have obtained the information.
- What may happen later: a listing may return or a new one may appear if public records change or a service obtains updated information.
That distinction matters when the listing concerns a political donation. Removing a broker’s copy is not the same as withdrawing a campaign-finance report from a government database. Avoid treating “remove my information” as a promise that the donation will disappear from every search result or public source.

Why political donations appear in a people-search result
A broker can combine data from several places into one profile. A donation-related entry may be drawn from a public campaign-finance filing, then joined with information from another broker, social media, or other public records. The resulting profile is a commercial presentation created by the people-search service, not the FEC filing itself. It may contain additional details, such as possible addresses or associates, that came from entirely different sources.
The FTC’s 1997 report to Congress specifically listed political contribution records as an example of a public-record category. That does not mean every service has the same data, displays every donor, or uses the same matching method. It does mean that a donation can be included among the public information a data broker collects and republishes.
Before submitting a request, confirm that the profile actually refers to you. Names can be shared by many people, and a donation entry may be connected to the wrong address or another person with a similar name. Use more than one matching detail when the site allows it, but do not provide unnecessary sensitive information merely to make a match.

How to request removal from people-search sites
There is no single opt-out form that covers every people-search site. Work through the services where you find a relevant listing, and keep a private record so you can tell which requests need checking later.
- Search for your listings. Search your name and, where useful, identifying details such as a phone number or address. Search variations of your name, including a middle initial or a former name if those versions could be associated with you. These details can help distinguish your listing from someone else’s, but use care when entering personal information into any site. Review what it asks for before submitting a request.
- Capture enough information to identify the result. Note the site name, the profile’s web address if one is shown, and the details that make the match credible. A private note is usually sufficient; avoid downloading or circulating a complete profile containing more personal data than you need.
- Find the site’s removal instructions. Look for an “opt out,” “privacy,” or “remove my information” process on the people-search site. If it is difficult to locate, the FTC recommends searching the site’s name with the phrases “opt out” or “remove my information.” The instructions may be on a privacy page rather than on the profile itself.
- Read the form before completing it. Check what the site says it will do, what information it requests, and whether it describes identity verification or a confirmation step. A site’s process may require you to identify the particular listing rather than simply entering your name.
- Submit the request for the matching listing. Follow that site’s instructions and provide only the information it requires to identify the listing or process the request. Some sites or services may require identity verification. Before providing extra information, consider what is being requested and how the site says it will be used.
- Save proof of submission. Privately note the site, the date you submitted the request, the listing or profile involved, and any confirmation number, email, or status page. If the site sends a verification message, complete the step only through the site’s stated process and retain the confirmation.
- Repeat on other relevant sites. A request to one service does not automatically submit requests to other services. Work through the other people-search sites where you find a listing, even if the profiles appear to contain the same donation information.
- Check the result later. Revisit the relevant sites periodically. If a listing returns or a new one appears, use the site’s process again and update your record.
The exact form, verification steps, and handling of a request vary by site. The FTC’s guidance supports the general workflow, but it does not establish a universal deadline for processing requests or a standard number of sites that must be covered. If a site provides a confirmation or status page, keep its details with your request record rather than assuming every site uses the same process.
How to search without creating more exposure
Start with ordinary web searches for your name and the phrase associated with the result, then open only the sites you need to review. Searching your name with a phone number, city, or address can narrow results when your name is common. You can also search the name of a suspected site together with “opt out” or “remove my information,” the phrases the FTC recommends.
Use a separate private checklist for each site. Record the minimum needed to recognize the profile and the date of the request. Do not post screenshots of a profile publicly, and do not send a full identity document unless the site’s process clearly requires verification and you have considered its privacy terms. A paid service may also request identifying information, so the same caution applies when someone else submits requests for you.

When a site asks for an email address, consider whether it explains how that address will be used. If a confirmation link is required, verify that it leads to the site’s legitimate domain before opening it. These precautions do not change the site’s legal obligations, but they reduce the chance of handing additional information to an unverified destination.
Why a listing can remain—or show up again
The government filing is a separate record
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) makes federal campaign-finance reports and other documents available online and for public inspection. Its public-record guidance, accessed October 13, 2026, says covered documents are posted within 48 hours of receipt, or within 24 hours for covered documents filed electronically. The page does not state a publication date, so those windows describe the guidance on that page rather than a newly dated change.
Because a people-search service may draw information from public records or another broker, suppressing its listing does not delete the source filing. If your goal is to keep a particular people-search site from displaying its copy, use that site’s opt-out procedure. If your goal is to remove the original record, a broker opt-out does not accomplish that.
Updated information can produce a new listing
The FTC warns that information can reappear after an opt-out, including when public records change. A request addresses existing information under the site’s procedure; it does not guarantee that the site will never obtain an updated record or create another listing. That is why a follow-up check is part of the process, not proof that the original request failed.
Your information may appear in another person’s report
An individual may also be mentioned in reports about relatives, neighbors, or associates. Opting out of your own listing may not remove every reference to you elsewhere on a service. If you are checking whether a site still displays information about you, review relevant reports where the service permits it, not only a profile under your own name.
Different sites may have different copies
One broker’s profile can be suppressed while a separate broker continues to show the same donation information. A search result that remains after an opt-out may therefore be a different service, a newly generated profile, or a reference in another person’s report. Compare the site name and profile details with your tracking record before submitting a duplicate request or concluding that the first request was ignored.
What the FEC’s restriction on copied information means
The FEC’s public-record guidance says: “Any information copied from such reports or statements may not be sold or used by any person for the purpose of soliciting contributions or for commercial purposes, other than using the name and address of any political committee to solicit contributions from such committee.” The exception is limited to using a political committee’s name and address to solicit contributions from that committee.

This is a restriction on certain uses of information copied from FEC reports. It is not a general right to erase, hide, or withdraw the underlying filing, and it is not a substitute for a people-search site’s opt-out process. The public availability of the filing and the rules governing use of copied information are distinct issues.
In practical terms, do not describe the FEC rule as a promise that a donor’s name will be removed from a database. If you believe a service is using copied filing information for a purpose restricted by the FEC guidance, preserve the relevant details and seek advice about the appropriate complaint or legal channel. The opt-out steps in this article address suppression of a broker listing, not enforcement of campaign-finance rules.
Do it yourself or use a paid removal service?
The FTC describes two routes: submit requests yourself for free, one site at a time, or pay a service to submit requests. A paid service may save the effort of managing multiple requests, but its value depends on what it actually covers and what follow-up it provides. No particular provider, current coverage count, price, or removal guarantee is established here.
| Factor | Do it yourself | Paid service |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Submitting opt-out requests yourself is free, according to FTC guidance. | Price and billing terms depend on the service; not stated by the FTC guidance cited here. |
| Effort | You find relevant sites, submit requests one at a time, and track follow-up yourself. | The service submits requests on your behalf; how much work it handles depends on its terms. |
| Sites covered | You choose the sites where you find a listing. | Coverage varies; the number and names of covered sites are not stated for any provider here. |
| Request reporting | Your own record can show which sites you contacted and when. | Ask whether the service reports which requests it submitted and their status; reporting is not established for any named provider here. |
| Repeat checks | You revisit sites periodically and submit another request if information returns. | Ask how often it searches for reappearing or newly found information; no provider’s schedule is established here. |
| Information handling | You decide what information to disclose to each site and keep the record yourself. | The service may need personal information for identity verification; review how it stores and uses that information. |
Before paying, ask the service which sites it covers, whether it will show you the requests it made, and how often it checks for reappearing or newly found information. Ask whether follow-up is included or costs extra, and whether you can cancel recurring billing. Review the service’s privacy terms and what personal information it asks you to provide, especially if it requires identity verification. Do not assume that a service covers every people-search site or can guarantee permanent removal unless its current terms clearly establish that claim.
The FTC’s May 2014 data-broker report describes a study of nine brokers and historical practices. It is useful context for how the industry operated at that time, but it is not a current coverage count, success rate, or performance promise for a service you might consider today.

A practical way to keep track
A small, private tracking list helps turn a one-time round of requests into manageable follow-up. Record only what you need to identify each action: site name, the listing you found, request date, confirmation or status, and the date you plan to check again. Store that record somewhere appropriate for the sensitivity of the information it contains.
- If you find a listing: submit the site’s request and record it.
- If the site confirms the request: retain the confirmation and check later that the listing is no longer displayed as expected.
- If you cannot find a removal form: use the FTC-recommended search phrasing with the site name; if the procedure remains unclear, do not guess at a form or send sensitive documents to an unverified destination.
- If information returns: treat it as a new follow-up task, submit the opt-out again if the site permits it, and note the new date.
- If a listing is still present elsewhere: check whether it is a different service, a newly created profile, or a mention in another person’s report before assuming the original request covered it.
- If you use a paid service: keep the service’s report of submitted requests and compare it with your own checks rather than relying on a general statement that requests were made.
There is no established current population-level figure for how many people-search sites list political donations, how often listings return, or the success rate of opt-outs. A site-by-site approach with periodic checks is more accurate than relying on a single percentage or a promise of permanent deletion.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming one request covers the internet: Each site controls its own listing and process.
- Confusing a broker profile with the FEC record: Suppressing a profile does not withdraw the government filing.
- Promising permanent deletion: Updated public records or another report can lead to a new appearance.
- Ignoring relatives’ or associates’ reports: Your information may be referenced outside a profile under your own name.
- Providing more identity information than necessary: Read the verification explanation and privacy terms first.
- Treating historical industry figures as current: The FTC’s 2014 nine-broker study does not establish present-day rates or provider coverage.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove my political donations from people-search sites?
Search for listings using your name and useful identifying details, locate each site’s opt-out or removal instructions, and submit a request for every relevant service. The FTC recommends searching a site name with “opt out” or “remove my information” when the instructions are hard to find. Keep confirmations and check again later.
Can I hide my campaign contributions online?
You can request suppression of a listing on a particular people-search site, but that does not hide or delete the underlying federal campaign-finance filing. The FEC makes federal filings available for public review, and a broker may have copied information from that public source.
Does opting out of one people-search site remove me from other sites?
No. Opt-out requests are generally site-specific. Repeat the process for each relevant service and track the dates separately.
Why did my listing come back after I opted out?
The FTC says information can reappear, including when public records change. A service may obtain updated information or create a new listing. Submit another request when the site permits it and record the follow-up.
Can my donation appear in someone else’s report?
Yes. The FTC warns that information may remain in reports about relatives, neighbors, or associates. Check those reports where the service makes them available; suppressing your own profile may not remove every reference.
Will the FEC remove my donation record if I ask?
A people-search opt-out does not remove the FEC filing. The FEC’s public-record guidance describes access to federal campaign-finance reports and a restriction on selling or using copied information for commercial purposes, subject to a limited political-committee solicitation exception. That rule is not a general deletion mechanism.
Is a paid removal service worth it?
It may save time when you have many requests, but compare site coverage, request reporting, repeat-check frequency, billing, and information-handling practices. The FTC supports both free self-submission and paid assistance; no particular provider or current performance claim is established here.

How often should I check?
The FTC recommends checking periodically, but its guidance does not set a universal interval. Choose a reminder that fits your situation, and check sooner if you learn that a relevant public record changed or a new profile appeared.
Bottom line for a donation listing
You can ask an individual people-search site to suppress its listing, and you can repeat the request across other sites where you find information about yourself. Keep track and check periodically because listings can reappear. The opt-out applies to the broker’s handling of its listing; it does not remove the federal campaign-finance filing or ensure that no other report contains a reference to you.

The FTC says updated public records or newly obtained information can cause a listing to reappear. Submit another request when permitted and record the new action.
