There is no single internet-wide opt-out. You must change the relevant setting or submit an objection on each service, and the available control can depend on your country. These actions generally limit future collection or training; they do not promise that a model already trained on your post will be retrained or erased.
What an AI-training opt-out actually does
Social networks and AI services use different categories of information. A control may cover public posts, private messages, prompts, conversations, reactions, or feedback, but rarely all of them at once. A training toggle can also be separate from controls that let other people reuse your photos, audio, text, or prompts inside a generative feature.
Use this sequence on every service:
- Turn off the platform’s dedicated training or data-sharing setting.
- Submit a formal objection or privacy request if the service provides one for your region.
- Reduce the audience for future posts, usually by making the account private or limiting post visibility.
- Avoid voluntarily sending feedback, prompts, or examples that the policy treats as a separate source of training data.
- Check the setting again after major app updates and record the date you checked it.
These steps address future use. Unless a service expressly promises deletion from a model, assume that information already incorporated into model parameters will remain there.
Training, feature reuse and search visibility are different
“Used to train AI” can mean several things. A company might use a post in a large pretraining dataset, use it to tune a model, send it to a vendor, use it to improve personalization or safety systems, or make it available as an input to an image or text feature. A control for one activity may not cover the others. For example, stopping model training does not necessarily stop another user from remixing a public image, and making a post private does not necessarily withdraw a prompt already submitted to an AI service.

When you change a control, read the wording around it. Look for the data types named (posts, comments, messages, prompts, uploads, interactions or feedback), the systems covered (generative models, personalization, security or anti-abuse tools), the geographic scope and whether the action affects future processing only.
OpenAI and ChatGPT
For a regular ChatGPT account, the documented switch is in the product’s data controls. It applies to conversations used to improve OpenAI’s models, rather than to posts on a social network.
Turn off model improvement
- Open ChatGPT and select your profile menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Set Improve the model for everyone to Off.
OpenAI also provides a Privacy Portal route labeled Do not train on my content. Use the portal if you prefer to submit the request outside the chat interface or need to manage a request associated with your account. Keep the confirmation or a dated screenshot so you can demonstrate when the request was made.
Use Temporary Chat for conversations you do not want used for improvement
OpenAI says Temporary Chats are not used to improve models while they remain temporary. Select the Temporary Chat option before starting the conversation rather than converting an existing normal chat afterward. Temporary status is a setting for that conversation; it is not a universal privacy setting for all future chats.
Do not treat thumbs feedback as covered by the switch
If you submit a thumbs-up or thumbs-down rating, OpenAI says the entire conversation associated with that feedback may be used to improve models even after you have opted out. Do not attach a rating to a conversation containing material you do not want considered for improvement. If you need to report a problem, remove confidential details first and check the current notice attached to the feedback flow.
What this does not cover
The ChatGPT control does not reach information you posted on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or X. It also does not erase material that another person copied into a different service. Treat it as an account-level control for OpenAI’s stated improvement process, not as a request to remove your name or content from every model on the internet.
LinkedIn has two different objection paths, and they do not have the same scope. Menu wording and eligibility depend on the member’s country and account state.

- Sign in to LinkedIn on the web or in the mobile app.
- Open Settings & Privacy.
- Look for the account or data-use setting that refers to using your data and content to train generative-AI models.
- Turn the training or sharing control off, then save the change if LinkedIn asks you to do so.
LinkedIn’s November 3, 2025 update says that, in designated regions, some member data and public posts may be used for content-generating AI. The same setting controls sharing with Microsoft for model-training activities. Private messages are excluded from the content-generating-AI use described in that update.

The exact label and availability depend on your country and account state. If you cannot find the setting, open LinkedIn’s current Help or Privacy Center page while signed in; do not assume that a missing switch means every form of processing has stopped. A setting may be introduced gradually, and an account managed by an employer may expose different controls from a personal account.
Use the Data Processing Objection Form for other model categories
LinkedIn’s separate Data Processing Objection Form covers objections to using personal data and member content for certain non-content-generating models, including systems used for personalization, security, trust, or anti-abuse functions. Submit this form in addition to the generative-AI setting when your concern covers those systems. The form’s eligibility and effect are determined by the region listed in the current LinkedIn notice.
Be precise in the request. Identify the member account, state that you object to the relevant processing, and retain the submission record. An objection to personalization or safety processing is not automatically an objection to every use of a public post, and turning off generative-AI sharing does not necessarily disable LinkedIn’s ordinary safety and security operations.

Facebook and Instagram (Meta)
Meta has stated that publicly shared Facebook and Instagram posts, including photos and text, were part of the data used to train the generative-AI models behind its announced features. The practical control is regional rather than universal.
Adults in the European Union
Meta’s April 14, 2025 announcement describes an objection for adults in the European Union covering the use of public data for training, including public posts and comments. Open the current Privacy Center or the privacy objection form shown in your Facebook or Instagram account, complete the objection, and retain the confirmation. A form shown to an EU adult should not be presented as a worldwide option; availability outside the EU is not established by that announcement.
Follow the form’s prompts for both services if you maintain separate Facebook and Instagram accounts. Check whether the objection is tied to one account, a linked account center or a particular data category. If the form asks for an explanation, state that you object to public posts, comments, photos and text being used for generative-AI training, and save the response you receive.
Reduce future public exposure everywhere
- Open the account’s privacy settings.
- Change the default audience for new posts to a restricted audience such as friends or followers you approve.
- Review existing public posts and change their audience or remove them where appropriate.
- Check story, reel, comment, remix, and profile-photo visibility separately; changing the default post audience does not necessarily change every format.
- Review tagged posts and posts made in groups or on public pages, because another audience setting may control those items.
Restricting an account or post audience reduces future public exposure. It is not a promise that Meta has removed data already collected or that an already trained model has been rebuilt. Deleting a post can also leave copies in screenshots, quoted posts, caches or another person’s download.

Training and feature reuse are separate questions. Meta’s 2026 Muse Image episode illustrates the distinction: the Associated Press reported that Meta discontinued the feature after criticism that public Instagram photos could be referenced for AI-generated images. When your app shows controls for sharing, reuse, remixing, or generative features, review those controls as well as the training objection. Turning off one does not automatically turn off the others.

Recheck these choices after adding a professional account, linking Accounts Center profiles or enabling a new creative tool. A setting for public-post training may not change who can embed, remix or otherwise reuse a post under the platform’s normal product rules.
X and Grok
X documents both a Grok data-sharing switch and a stronger effect from protected posts.
Disable Grok data sharing
- Open X and select Settings and privacy.
- Choose Privacy and safety.
- Open the Grok or Grok data-sharing section.
- Disable the option that allows your data to be used for training or fine-tuning Grok.
X says that, after opting out, personal data about your interactions with Grok, your inputs, and Grok’s results will not be used to train or fine-tune Grok. You can still use Grok on X after turning the option off. This wording concerns Grok-related interaction data; it is not a statement that every public post on X has been removed from every xAI dataset.
Make the account private to protect posts
Enable Protect your posts in the same privacy area if you want to stop public visibility. X says a private account prevents posts from being used to train Grok and xAI’s underlying AI models and prevents those posts from being surfaced in responses to user queries. Protection changes future visibility; it does not state that posts already included in a model are removed.
Review followers after enabling protection. People who already follow you may still see your posts, and an approved follower can copy or quote them elsewhere. Protection is therefore strongest when combined with removing sensitive older posts and limiting who you approve.
Be careful with voluntary feedback
Sending feedback about Grok can create a separate data-use path. Do not assume that the data-sharing toggle covers examples or comments you voluntarily submit through a feedback flow. If feedback is necessary, remove personal identifiers, client information and unpublished material first.

The comparison shows why a single checklist item such as “make the account private” is incomplete. OpenAI’s control is about chats and feedback; LinkedIn distinguishes generative and non-generative systems; Meta’s cited objection concerns public content and is explicitly regional; X combines a Grok interaction switch with a documented protected-post effect.

Your country is not eligible
Regional rules determine whether a form is shown. Meta’s cited public-data objection is described for adults in the European Union. LinkedIn’s rollout identifies designated regions and the UK. A control available to one member may be absent for another without either account being defective. Do not use another person’s location or account to submit an inaccurate objection.

The app uses a different label
Platforms change menu names and move privacy controls between the account, privacy, and AI sections. Search the service’s current Help or Privacy Center while signed in, then compare the wording with the setting you changed. Capture a dated screenshot or confirmation email for your records. On mobile, also check the web version: some account-level controls appear in a browser even when the app exposes only a shortened menu.
You changed training but not reuse
A training objection may not disable remixing, image references, prompt sharing, or another generative feature. Review feature-specific sharing and reuse settings separately, especially when the service introduces a new AI tool. Removing a public audience is useful, but it cannot recall copies already made by others.
You sent feedback after opting out
Feedback flows can have their own terms. OpenAI explicitly warns about thumbs feedback; X separately warns that voluntary feedback can create another data-use path. Avoid submitting examples that contain sensitive material. If you have already sent feedback, consult the service’s current privacy request process rather than assuming the original opt-out automatically withdraws it.
You expect model erasure
An opt-out normally governs collection or future use. It does not automatically retrain a model that has already learned from a dataset. Look for an explicit deletion or model-removal promise; absent one, describe the result as limiting future processing. A model can also reproduce a familiar phrase or image without storing a retrievable copy of the original post, so ordinary deletion tools may not change its behavior.

- Identify every service where the post, prompt, image, or message appears.
- Record your country and the date, because eligibility and menu labels change.
- Turn off the service’s direct training or data-sharing option.
- Submit the applicable objection form, including LinkedIn’s separate form when non-content-generating systems concern you.
- Change default and existing post audiences; review stories, reels, comments, remixes, and profile media individually.
- Use Temporary Chat for eligible OpenAI conversations and avoid rating sensitive chats.
- On X, disable Grok sharing and enable protected posts if you need post-level protection.
- Save confirmations and recheck after an app update or a major new AI feature.
What these controls cannot guarantee
They cannot provide one switch for the entire internet, recall a screenshot or copy made by another person, or guarantee that an already trained model has forgotten a post. They also cannot cover a separate feature unless its own controls are changed. The strongest practical approach is layered: object where the service and region allow it, minimize public visibility going forward, avoid voluntary feedback containing sensitive material, and verify the setting periodically.
Frequently asked questions
Does making Facebook or Instagram private remove posts already used to train an AI model?
No promise of that kind appears in Meta’s cited notices. Making an account or post less public reduces future exposure, but it does not establish that previously collected data was removed or that a trained model was rebuilt.
Can I opt out of LinkedIn AI training if I do not see a switch?
Eligibility and wording vary by country and account. Check LinkedIn’s signed-in Help or Privacy Center. If your concern also covers personalization, security, trust or anti-abuse models, look for the separate Data Processing Objection Form; the generative-AI switch alone may not address those systems.

Will OpenAI use a ChatGPT conversation after I turn off model improvement?
OpenAI documents the “Improve the model for everyone” switch and a Privacy Portal request. Temporary Chats are not used to improve models while temporary. However, OpenAI says the entire conversation linked to a thumbs-up or thumbs-down may be used for improvement, even after opting out.

Does X’s Grok opt-out stop me from using Grok?
No. X says you can continue using Grok after disabling the data-sharing option. The documented effect is that personal data about your Grok interactions, inputs and results will not be used to train or fine-tune Grok.
Does a private X account stop all AI use of my posts?
X says protected posts are not publicly visible, used to train Grok or xAI’s underlying models, or surfaced in responses. That statement does not guarantee removal of copies made before protection or copies shared by followers.
Is there a paid product that performs these opt-outs for me?
No physical product directly performs these service-specific requests. A privacy book, VPN, privacy screen or general security tool may support broader privacy goals, but you still need to change each platform’s own setting or form yourself.
