There is no single switch that stops every type of vehicle-data collection. To reduce sharing, review three separate layers: the car’s connectivity and privacy settings, the automaker’s app or account portal, and any optional service that sends driving data to an insurer, dealer, or another business. The available controls and the features you lose depend on the automaker, model year, vehicle, service, and country or state.

What you must turn off—and what each control changes

A connected vehicle can generate several categories of information at once: location, driving behavior, diagnostics, crash information, vehicle-health readings, account details, and communications with paired devices. Those data can travel through different systems, so one privacy request does not necessarily change every flow.

Control to review What it generally affects Possible consequence Is it the same as deleting old data?
In-vehicle connectivity or privacy setting Transmission from the vehicle to the automaker or its connected-service platform Remote commands, safety features, navigation, diagnostics, or other connected services may stop or become unavailable No. It changes future transmission; the reviewed automaker materials do not promise universal deletion of data already received.
Automaker app or privacy portal Consent, sale or sharing, targeted advertising, account and vehicle-data choices Some app functions or personalized services may change, depending on the selected option Not automatically. A deletion request is a separate action where available.
Optional insurer, driving-score, or usage-based service Data sent under a separate enrollment or permission Insurance discounts, driving scores, coaching, or service eligibility may end No. Check the third party’s own retention and deletion process.
California privacy-rights request Statutory rights such as opting out of sale or sharing, or requesting deletion The business may need to change processing or remove information subject to legal exceptions An opt-out and a deletion request are different rights.

Compare controls by asking five questions: Does the setting limit collection or only onward sale and sharing? Is it controlled in the vehicle, the app, or through a legal-rights form? Which data category does it cover? Is it optional consent or a statutory right? What functionality disappears afterward? These distinctions prevent a targeted-advertising switch from being mistaken for a modem shutdown, or a deletion request from being mistaken for a future-use opt-out.

How to stop your car from sharing driving data

  1. Write down the vehicle details. Record the make, model, model year, trim, market, connected-services subscription, and the account email used in the automaker’s app. These details help support staff identify the correct consent record.
  2. Read the current owner manual and privacy notice. Look for sections titled Connectivity, Connected Services, Data Privacy, Vehicle Data, Consent, or Privacy Choices. Do not rely on instructions for a different model year.
  3. Open the automaker’s app or web account. Find vehicle-specific privacy controls before changing in-car settings. Look for separate switches or requests covering data transmission, sale or sharing, targeted advertising, precise location, diagnostics, trip logs, crash information, and account data.
  4. Change the vehicle’s connectivity setting. In the car’s settings, review the connected-vehicle or privacy menu and disable the categories you do not need. Some vehicles offer individual choices; others provide a broader connectivity-consent decision.
  5. Review optional third-party enrollment. Check for driving-score, safe-driving, usage-based-insurance, dealer, roadside, or other services that received a separate permission. Cancel or disable each enrollment through the service that collected the consent.
  6. Submit formal privacy requests when appropriate. If your state provides an opt-out-of-sale-or-sharing or deletion right, use the automaker’s official portal and select the correct request type. An opt-out is not a deletion request.
  7. Save proof. Keep confirmation numbers, emails, dates, screenshots, and the vehicle identification number or account identifier used for the request.
  8. Check again later. Reopen the app and vehicle menu after the request has been processed. Confirm that the setting remains off and that any optional service shows the expected enrollment status.

If the automaker offers multiple consents, make one change at a time and note the resulting service impact. A broad connectivity decision can be much more consequential than turning off precise location or targeted advertising. Ask support to identify the exact data streams covered by each control and whether the change applies to every driver profile tied to the vehicle.

Automaker app and account controls

Toyota: Data Privacy Portal example for U.S. vehicles

Toyota’s Connected Services Privacy Notice, updated July 1, 2026, gives a concrete example of an account workflow: open the Toyota app, choose Account, open Data Privacy Portal, and select the vehicle. The portal lets the account holder review and change vehicle-data transmission preferences.

Toyota states that declining Vehicle Connectivity Consent disables data transmission and removes access to Connected Services. If a user does nothing, Toyota says it continues using non-precise location, driving, and vehicle-health data for internal research and analysis while Connected Services remain unavailable. Treat those statements as Toyota’s U.S. policy for the notice’s stated date, not as a universal rule for every automaker.

Ford: connected settings and market limits

Ford’s connected-car policy explains that owners can change connected-vehicle data preferences in the vehicle’s SYNC Connectivity settings. Ford also warns that disconnecting or changing sharing settings can affect the quality or availability of connected services.

The cited policy is for the United Kingdom. U.S. owners should verify the current FordPass instructions, vehicle software, and U.S. privacy choices for their vehicle rather than copying a UK menu path.

Hyundai: combine vehicle information with state choices

Hyundai’s U.S. notice, updated August 4, 2026, describes vehicle, account, service, driving, and geolocation information and provides a website route for privacy choices. It also describes state-specific choices. Because the available rights and controls can differ by state and vehicle technology, use the current notice for your state and your owner’s manual instead of expecting one universal in-car switch.

Honda: individual categories can depend on the vehicle

Honda’s vehicle-data policy lists possible opt-in or opt-out choices for location, possible-crash response, diagnostic and trip-log transmission, paired-device communications, and vehicle or system data. The policy says availability depends on the vehicle. The cited document is Honda Canada, so U.S. owners should use American Honda’s current privacy-choices page and the manual for their particular car.

How to turn off connected services without surprises

Connected services can include remote lock and start, live navigation, emergency or crash response, roadside assistance, vehicle-health reports, stolen-vehicle support, and app-based status checks. Turning off a broad connectivity consent may disable several of these at once.

  • Before confirming, list the features you use for safety, accessibility, commuting, or emergency response.
  • Look for a granular option that disables marketing or optional data uses while preserving a safety service, if the vehicle offers one.
  • Ask support whether the change affects only future transmission, whether an emergency function remains active, and how long the change takes to propagate.
  • Afterward, test only the features you are comfortable testing; a failed remote command can be an expected result of the opt-out.

Toyota explicitly says declining Vehicle Connectivity Consent removes Connected Services. Ford says changing sharing settings or disconnecting can affect service quality or availability. Other manufacturers may use different combinations, so do not infer the consequence from another brand’s policy.

Can your car share driving data with an insurance company?

Yes, but the path may be separate from the automaker’s general privacy settings. A usage-based-insurance program, safe-driving score, dealer program, or mobile application can collect driving events under its own enrollment and terms.

  1. Search the automaker app, insurer account, and email for terms such as telematics, safe driving, driving score, usage-based insurance, connected-car discount, or trip data.
  2. Identify who receives the data: the automaker, an insurer, a dealer, a technology provider, or more than one party.
  3. Open the service’s own privacy and consent settings and cancel the enrollment or withdraw permission there.
  4. Ask the insurer how cancellation affects a discount, billing, score, stored trips, and future eligibility.
  5. Request deletion from the insurer or separate service if its policy and applicable law provide that option.

Do not assume that an automaker’s broad privacy request withdraws a separately granted insurer permission. The reviewed primary materials do not establish one cross-brand workflow for every insurer integration. If a phone app is collecting trips independently, revoke its location permission and close the enrollment in that app as well; changing the car’s modem setting may not affect phone-based collection.

California: opt out of sale or sharing, then consider deletion

Opt-out rights are different from deletion

California consumers can use the state privacy regulator’s process to stop a business from selling or sharing personal information. That right is distinct from asking the business to delete information. Select the request that matches your goal, and keep the confirmation.

The California Privacy Protection Agency’s March 5, 2026 Ford enforcement release said Ford had required email verification before processing certain connected-vehicle and digital-property opt-outs. The agency said Ford would change its practices and address Global Privacy Control. The release quoted enforcement chief Michael Macko: “Opting out is supposed to be easy.” It described a $375,703 fine required in the Ford decision.

A March 12, 2025 Honda enforcement release described agency allegations that Honda required identity verification and excessive personal information for certain rights requests, including opt-outs, and presented choices unequally in a privacy tool. Those were allegations and enforcement findings about that matter, not proof that every automaker uses the same process.

Global Privacy Control is a web signal

California describes an opt-out preference signal, such as Global Privacy Control, as a browser or extension message telling websites that the user does not want personal information sold or shared. It is not a setting in a vehicle modem, dashboard, or infotainment system. California’s 2025 Opt Me Out Act requirements for browsers take effect in January 2027, so do not assume every browser is already required to provide the feature.

Use DROP for registered data brokers

California’s DROP system launched January 1, 2026. It lets consumers send a deletion request to registered data brokers. Optional details, including a vehicle identification number, can improve matching. DROP addresses information held by participating brokers; it does not turn off collection by an automaker, insurer, or vehicle system. Complete the automaker and third-party requests separately.

GM settlement information is not a general opt-out instruction

On May 8, 2026, California’s attorney general and partner agencies announced a proposed $12.75 million settlement involving GM, subject to court approval. The announcement described a five-year restriction on selling driving data to consumer reporting agencies, deletion of certain retained data within 180 days subject to stated exceptions, and other requirements. This was a California enforcement proposal, not a universal setting or proof that every GM data flow is covered. Check its current court status before relying on it.

What to do with data already shared

Disabling collection usually addresses future transmission. The reviewed automaker materials do not promise that every opt-out retroactively deletes data already received or shared.

  • Submit a separate deletion request to the automaker if the portal offers one.
  • Ask each insurer, dealer, analytics provider, or other recipient about its retention period and deletion process.
  • Use California DROP for registered data brokers if you are eligible and want broker-held data addressed.
  • Keep the response from each organization; a completed request at one company does not prove that another recipient deleted its copy.

When requesting deletion, specify the identifiers and account involved, but provide only information reasonably needed for matching. Ask whether backups, fraud-prevention records, warranty records, or legal-retention exceptions remain. A deletion response may cover one database while leaving a separately operated service untouched.

Common failure modes and fixes

The setting is missing

Check the model year, trim, software version, subscription status, and market. A control described in a manual may apply only to vehicles with a particular modem or connected-service package. Contact the automaker with the vehicle identification number and ask which privacy controls are available for that configuration.

The app says “off,” but trips continue to appear

Check whether the trips came from a separately enrolled insurer, phone application, paired device, or another driver’s account. Review each service’s consent record rather than changing only the automaker setting.

Connected features stopped working

This can be the intended result of declining connectivity consent. Re-read the confirmation to identify the affected service. If you need one safety or emergency function, ask whether the vehicle supports category-level controls instead of restoring all data transmission.

The privacy portal demands more information than expected

Record what the portal requests and compare it with the applicable state notice. California enforcement actions have addressed verification and excessive-information concerns, but requirements can differ by request type. Use the official support channel and ask why each field is necessary.

Decision checklist

  • Want the car to transmit less data? Start with the in-vehicle connectivity menu and the automaker’s vehicle-specific consent portal.
  • Want to stop sale or sharing? Use the account privacy controls or applicable state rights process; do not substitute a connectivity change for a legal opt-out.
  • Want to stop an insurance program? Cancel the insurer or telematics enrollment separately.
  • Want old records removed? Submit deletion requests to the automaker, recipients, and—where applicable—California data brokers.
  • Need connected safety features? Check the exact functionality lost before disabling broad connectivity consent.
  • Need proof? Save screenshots, dates, confirmations, and follow-up results for every system.

Scope and timing

This guidance is U.S.-focused, with California examples because that state’s current regulator materials provide detailed rights and enforcement information. Privacy menus, statutory rights, connected features, and insurer arrangements can change. Recheck the automaker’s current notice, app, owner manual, and service terms when you make the request.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I opt out of my car’s data collection?

Use all three layers: change the vehicle’s connectivity or privacy setting, submit the appropriate consent or sale/share request in the automaker’s app or privacy portal, and cancel any separately enrolled insurer, dealer, driving-score, or telematics service. Confirm each change and save the evidence. The exact menu and functionality loss depend on the vehicle and market.

How do I turn off connected services?

Open the vehicle’s Connectivity or Privacy menu and follow the current owner manual. Some brands also require a decision in the account portal. Toyota says declining Vehicle Connectivity Consent disables data transmission and Connected Services; Ford warns that disconnecting or changing sharing settings can affect service quality or availability. Check which remote, safety, navigation, or roadside features will stop first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can my car share driving data with my insurance company?

It can if you enrolled in usage-based insurance, a safe-driving score, a connected-car discount, or a related app. Review both the automaker account and insurer account, identify every recipient, and withdraw permission through the service that collected it. Ask how cancellation affects discounts, billing, stored trips, scores, and future eligibility.

Does turning off connectivity delete data already collected?

Usually, it addresses future transmission rather than guaranteeing deletion of historical records. Submit a separate deletion request to the automaker and ask each insurer, dealer, analytics provider, or other recipient about retention and deletion. California residents can also use DROP for participating registered data brokers.

Is Global Privacy Control a setting in my car?

No. Global Privacy Control is a browser or extension signal for websites that indicates a preference not to sell or share personal information. It does not control a vehicle modem or infotainment system. California’s 2025 browser requirements take effect in January 2027, so browser support is not universal today.

What is California DROP, and will it stop my automaker from collecting data?

DROP launched January 1, 2026, to send deletion requests to registered California data brokers. Adding optional details such as a vehicle identification number can improve matching. DROP concerns broker-held information and does not disable collection by an automaker, insurer, or vehicle system, so those controls must be handled separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my automaker require identity or email verification for an opt-out?

Verification practices vary by request and company. California enforcement releases concerning Ford and Honda addressed verification and excessive-information concerns in specific matters. Use the official portal, document what it requests, and ask support why each field is necessary. Do not assume another automaker follows the same process.

What should I save after submitting a privacy request?

Keep the confirmation number, date, screenshots, emails, account identifier, vehicle identification number used for matching, and the setting’s later status. If a feature stops working, record that too. These details help distinguish a transmission change from a sale/share opt-out, deletion request, or targeted-advertising choice.

The Bottom Line

To reduce vehicle-data sharing, check the car, the automaker account, and every separately enrolled third-party service. Treat transmission controls, sale-or-sharing opt-outs, and deletion requests as different actions, and verify the consequences before disabling connected features. California residents should handle automaker rights requests and DROP broker deletions separately, while all drivers should keep confirmation records.
