You can keep a portfolio, post, or other creative work public while reducing some forms of AI use, but there is no universal switch that binds every platform, partner, and independent crawler. Start with the service hosting the work, use its own objection or opt-out control, add a file-level preference when a supported service honors it, and use crawler directives if you control the website. Treat each layer as a separate request: a platform’s generative-model policy is not the same as its product-improvement or safety analysis, and none of these controls proves that every outside scraper will comply.
What an AI opt-out can—and cannot—cover
“AI training” is often used as one phrase for several different activities. A service may train a generative model, analyze content to improve search or recommendations, use material for safety systems, accept it as a reference in an AI feature, or pass it to a named partner. An account setting may cover only one of those uses.
The control also has a defined audience. A host-platform setting reaches that host’s systems and whatever policy commitments it makes. An embedded file preference reaches services that can read and honor that preference. A crawler rule on your own domain is a signal to visiting bots; it is not a technical lock on every copy made by people or automated tools.
Before changing anything, write down four facts:
- Where the work is hosted: a portfolio platform, a social network, a cloud account, an AI service, or a site you operate.
- Whether the account is personal or business, because controls can differ.
- Your country or region, since some objection routes are legally or geographically limited.
- Which use you want to limit: generative training, product-improvement analysis, use as a reference, safety and discovery systems, or independent scraping.
These distinctions prevent a setting that sounds broad from being treated as a promise it does not make.

ArtStation: a clear platform-level NoAI policy
What ArtStation says
ArtStation’s terms state that projects receive a NoAI designation by default. The creator must actively remove that designation to disable it. The terms prohibit collecting, aggregating, mining, scraping, or otherwise using NoAI Content in generative-AI datasets, development, or as inputs.
ArtStation also states that it will not use or license user content for generative-AI datasets, development, or inputs whether or not the content is marked NoAI. That is a platform policy commitment, not proof that an unrelated website, person, or scraper cannot copy a public image.
What remains allowed
The same terms separately allow use of content to improve safety and discovery tools, including search and recommendations. Therefore, an artist can have a work protected from the generative-AI uses described in the terms while the platform still uses signals from the work for ordinary platform functions.
How to act
- Keep the project on ArtStation if its public distribution is important to you.
- Check the project’s current NoAI designation in the project controls and leave the default designation enabled.
- Read the current terms before changing the designation; removing it is an affirmative choice to disable the NoAI protection.
- Do not describe the designation as a universal anti-scraping barrier. It governs ArtStation’s stated obligations and does not establish compliance by unrelated crawlers.
Adobe accounts: separate generative training from content analysis
Generative-model training
Adobe’s content-analysis FAQ, dated June 4, 2026, says Adobe does not analyze customer content to train generative-AI models unless the user submits content to Adobe Stock. Adobe describes Firefly as trained on licensed content such as Adobe Stock and public-domain material whose copyright has expired.
That statement applies to the generative-training question. It should not be shortened to “Adobe never analyzes your work,” because Adobe discusses other kinds of analysis and specific exceptions.

Product-improvement analysis
Adobe says content analysis is a product-improvement issue and that users have control over analysis of content processed or stored on Adobe servers. Business profiles are automatically opted out of product-improvement content analysis. Personal-account controls vary, so open the current privacy or content-analysis controls for the specific account rather than following a business-account instruction.
Adobe lists exceptions involving proactive submissions, feedback, beta programs or user studies, and public contributions such as Adobe Stock and Behance. Local files are not analyzed for product improvement. A file stored locally and never processed by Adobe’s servers is therefore a different case from a file uploaded to a cloud document or creative service.
A practical Adobe check
- Identify whether the work is only on a local drive or is processed or stored on Adobe servers.
- Identify whether the account is a business profile or a personal account.
- Open the account’s current privacy or content-analysis controls and review the wording for product improvement, rather than assuming it controls generative training.
- Review whether you have submitted the work to Adobe Stock, sent it as feedback, joined a beta or study, or made it a public contribution; those actions are listed exceptions or separate use cases.
- Recheck the FAQ and account controls before relying on them, because Adobe’s page is dated June 4, 2026 and settings can change.
Adobe Content Credentials: a file-level preference for supported services
What the preference does
Adobe describes a Content Credentials preference embedded in a file. It asks supported generative-AI models not to train on the content or use it to create new content. Adobe currently names Firefly and Spawning as supporting services.
This is an interoperable signal with a defined audience, not a guarantee that every model, person, or crawler will recognize it. A public image can still be copied by a service that does not support or honor the preference.
Requirements and trade-offs
- Adobe requires a verified name or at least one connected social account to enable the preference.
- Enabling it makes the work ineligible for upload to Adobe Stock.
- Adobe says the setting blocks use in Firefly features including Style Reference, Structure Reference, and Generate Similar.
The marketplace restriction is consequential: you must choose between Adobe Stock eligibility and this particular file-level preference for a given work.

When to use it
Use the preference when your priority is communicating a machine-readable request to the named supporting services and you accept the Adobe Stock consequence. Keep the original file and a record of the preference you selected. Do not present the embedded signal as retroactive removal of material that a model or person has already copied; the available policy descriptions do not establish a universal method for reversing prior use.

Who the described process covers
Meta’s April 2025 announcement describes training in the European Union on public posts and comments shared by adults and on user interactions with Meta AI. It describes notifications containing a form through which EU-based users can object.
The announcement says public data from EU accounts belonging to people under 18 is excluded. It also says private messages are not used unless a person shares them with Meta AI. These statements are specific to the described policy and geography; they should not be generalized to every country or every Meta account.
How to approach the objection
- Confirm that the account and the person using it fall within the EU-based route described by Meta.
- Look for the notification and objection form in the current account flow rather than relying on an old menu path.
- Submit the objection for the account and content covered by the form.
- Save confirmation of the submission and revisit Meta’s current notice, because the announcement includes a March 27, 2026 clarification and regional rules can change.
Keeping an Instagram or other Meta profile public does not make this route universal. A public post may still be visible to people and services outside the stated policy, and the described objection does not establish control over independent scraping.
If the work is on your own portfolio website
Use crawler directives as one layer
On a domain you control, you can add crawler directives in robots.txt and use bot-management controls offered by your host or content-delivery provider. These mechanisms communicate a site-owner preference to visiting crawlers. They are separate from a host platform’s AI policy.

A crawler directive is a request or policy signal. The available guidance does not establish that every crawler must comply, so do not describe robots.txt as a technical guarantee against copying or model training.
Plan the rule before publishing it
- List the directories or file types that contain the portfolio work you want to restrict.
- Check the current robots.txt syntax and your host or CDN’s bot-control documentation before editing the file.
- Apply the narrowest rule that matches your goal; do not assume a broad block is harmless to ordinary search visibility.
- Test that the file is reachable at your domain’s robots.txt address and monitor server logs or bot controls for the crawlers you care about.
- Keep originals and backups outside the public web root so a public copy is not your only copy.
Do not claim that a robots rule automatically removes a work from search or prevents a determined scraper. Its effect depends on the crawler’s behavior and the controls actually available from your host.
If you submit drafts or images directly to an AI service
Publishing a portfolio online is different from uploading a draft to an AI product. For individual ChatGPT accounts, OpenAI’s Help Center says you can turn off Improve the model for everyone under Settings > Data controls, or select Do not train on my content in the Privacy Portal. Either option covers new conversations.
There is an important exception: if you submit response feedback, the associated conversation may be used to improve models even after opting out. Business services and API defaults differ, so do not apply the individual-account instructions to those products without checking their terms and controls.

For a sensitive draft, decide whether uploading it is necessary at all. An opt-out changes the service’s stated handling of covered conversations; it does not give you control over copies you or another participant has already downloaded.

A complete workflow for keeping work online
- Inventory every public copy. Record the platform, account type, country or region, visibility, and whether the file is also stored in an AI or cloud service.
- Read the host’s current policy. Look specifically for generative training, product improvement, safety, recommendations, reference features, partners, and objection procedures.
- Enable the host control. Leave ArtStation’s default NoAI designation in place, use the applicable Adobe account control, or submit Meta’s EU objection when eligible.
- Choose the file-level signal. Add Adobe’s Content Credentials preference only when its supported-service scope and Adobe Stock trade-off fit the work.
- Protect an owned domain. Review current robots.txt syntax and host/CDN bot controls, then apply a narrow directive and test it.
- Control direct uploads. Turn off the individual ChatGPT setting before new conversations if you use that service, and avoid feedback on a conversation that must remain outside model improvement.
- Document what you changed. Save screenshots, confirmation messages, dates, and copies of original files. This helps you detect a changed setting or prove which preference you selected.
- Review periodically. Platform labels, partner lists, regional eligibility, and account menus can change. Recheck them before publishing a new body of work or uploading a revised file.
Common situations and the right response
“I cannot find the opt-out menu.”
First check the account type and region. The documented routes are not universal: Adobe distinguishes business and personal profiles, while Meta’s described objection is for EU-based users. A missing control may reflect eligibility rather than a hidden setting.
“I want public reach and Adobe Stock eligibility.”
Adobe’s Content Credentials preference prevents Adobe Stock uploads. Decide which objective matters for that file. You can keep the work public through another channel, but do not claim that the preference and Stock eligibility can both apply when Adobe states they conflict.
“I enabled a tag, so can I stop all scraping?”
No. ArtStation’s NoAI designation governs the platform’s stated commitments, and Content Credentials reach named supporting services. A public file can still be copied by an unrelated person, crawler, or model that does not honor the signal.
“I made the post private after publication. Does that undo training?”
The documented policies do not establish a reliable universal way to reverse material already copied or used. Changing visibility may limit future access on that platform, but it is not evidence that prior copies or training use have been removed.
“Will blocking AI crawlers remove my portfolio from search?”
Do not assume either outcome. A robots directive can be selective, but its effect depends on the exact rule and the crawler. Check the current syntax and your host’s documentation before applying a broad block, and verify how ordinary search crawlers are treated.
