To connect to Wi-Fi, open your device’s Wi-Fi settings, select the network name, and enter its password if requested. If you mean making a router’s network “open” by removing its password, that disables Wi-Fi authentication and encryption; for a home network, keep security enabled and use a guest network for visitors instead.

How to connect to a Wi-Fi network

Connect only to networks you own or have permission to use. The steps are similar on most phones and computers, although menu names vary by operating system and version.

  1. Open your device’s Wi-Fi or network settings and turn Wi-Fi on.
  2. Select the intended network name, also called its SSID.
  3. Enter the Wi-Fi password or security key when prompted, then choose the option to join or connect.
  4. If you are connecting at a hotel, café, airport, or other public venue, complete its sign-in page if one appears. Ask the venue for access details if you do not know them.

Microsoft’s Windows instructions cover selecting a wireless network and entering its security key; consult its current guidance for Windows-specific steps: Connect to a Wi-Fi network in Windows.

How to find your Wi-Fi password

For a home network, check the router label or the setup information provided by your internet provider, unless you changed the password. You can also ask the person who manages the router. If you administer it, use the router’s current instructions to view or change the Wi-Fi password; the steps and labels depend on the router and provider. Do not try to bypass a password on a network you do not own or have authorization to use.

How to set up a secure home Wi-Fi network

Use the router’s or internet provider’s setup instructions to choose a distinctive network name and set a strong Wi-Fi password. Enable WPA3 Personal if both your router and devices support it. If they do not, WPA2 Personal is a useful compatibility fallback. The FTC describes WPA3 as the newer and best encryption option in its home Wi-Fi guidance, while Microsoft also recommends WPA3 when the router and PC support it: FTC: How to secure your home Wi-Fi network; Microsoft: Connect to a Wi-Fi network in Windows.

Apple Support calls WPA3 Personal “the newest, most secure protocol currently available for Wi-Fi devices.” Its guidance also explains that the best setting depends on the security options supported by your router and devices: Apple: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.

WPA3 and WPA2 compared

Setting When to use it What to know
WPA3 Personal When your router and connecting devices support it The newer preferred option in FTC and Microsoft guidance.
WPA2 Personal When compatibility requires it A suitable fallback in the cited consumer guidance.
WPA or WEP Do not use for a modern home setup The FTC describes these as outdated and insecure. Check for router updates; if WPA or WEP are the only available choices, consider replacing the router.

Secure the router’s settings

The Wi-Fi password and the router administrator password are separate credentials: one lets devices join the network, while the other controls router settings. Change both from their defaults. Then follow the router maker’s or provider’s instructions to update router software and check that its firewall is on. Log out of the administrator account when you finish.

Consider turning off remote management, WPS, or UPnP if you do not need those features; the FTC notes that these conveniences can weaken network security. Menu names and options vary by router, so use its current documentation: FTC: How to secure your home Wi-Fi network.

Should you make your Wi-Fi network open?

An open network has no Wi-Fi password. Apple says that turning off Wi-Fi security disables authentication and encryption, allowing anyone nearby to join. Someone on the network could use your internet connection, access shared resources such as printers or computers, or monitor websites and other transmitted data. Do not remove security from your home network just to make it easier to share access: Apple: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.

Give visitors access with a guest network

If your router supports it, set up a separate guest network and share those credentials with visitors instead of giving them the main Wi-Fi password. The FTC says a guest network helps keep the primary password with fewer people and can help isolate a guest device that has malware: FTC: How to secure your home Wi-Fi network.

Is public Wi-Fi safe?

The FTC says public Wi-Fi is usually safe for ordinary use because websites widely use encryption. Check for HTTPS or a lock symbol in your browser, and keep your operating system, browser, and security software updated. These precautions do not mean that every network or online activity is risk-free: FTC: Using public Wi-Fi networks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The FTC’s recommendation for a VPN has a narrower context: its business guidance recommends one when employees or vendors use public Wi-Fi to connect remotely to a business network. That guidance does not establish that every consumer needs a VPN for every public hotspot session: FTC: Protecting Personal Information: A Guide for Business.
