To open a Riven Mod in Warframe, equip it on an appropriate weapon, complete the challenge shown on the Veiled Riven, and the Mod will become Unveiled with its randomized stats revealed. If you have a Veiled Riven Cipher, you can use it to complete one Veiled Riven Challenge instantly instead.
Warframe’s official terminology is unveil: opening a Riven means revealing its properties. The steps below explain what to do with a Mod marked “???,” how to finish its challenge, and when a Cipher can take the place of mission progress.
How to unveil a Riven Mod
- Open the Mods menu. Go to the Mods console in the lower section of the Orbiter and open the Mods menu.
- Equip the Riven on a weapon. Select the Riven and equip it on an appropriate weapon. If it is a newly acquired Riven marked “???,” equipping it reveals its challenge and changes it to a Veiled Riven.
- Read the challenge carefully. The Veiled Riven displays the condition you must satisfy. Follow the exact condition shown on that Mod in a mission; the requirement can vary from one Riven to another.
- Complete the challenge. Once the condition is met, the Riven becomes Unveiled and its stats are revealed. You can then view the revealed properties in the Mods menu.
The Orbiter Guide identifies the Mods console as the place to manage Mods and the Arsenal as the place to equip weapons and Mods. Menu labels and controls can differ by platform or change with later interface updates, so use the current in-game prompts if your layout does not match these descriptions.

What “???,” Veiled, and Unveiled mean

These states and slot rules are described in Digital Extremes’ Update 32 notes. In practice, the important distinction is that “???” is not the challenge itself: equipping the indistinct Riven reveals what you need to do.
Should you complete the challenge or use a Cipher?

Digital Extremes’ Update 35: Whispers in the Walls describes the Cipher as a consumable used to instantly complete one Veiled Riven Challenge. It does not reveal an unspecified challenge before equipping an indistinct Riven; the Mod must be Veiled, with its challenge displayed, for the Cipher’s stated use to apply. The cited game notes establish what the Cipher does, but not its current acquisition methods.
What to know before starting
- Equipping changes the slot situation. An indistinct “???” Riven does not use a Riven slot until equipped. After it becomes Veiled, it uses a slot; an Unveiled Riven also uses a slot.
- The challenge is specific to the Mod. Do not assume every Riven has the same objective. Read the text on your Veiled Riven and complete that condition.
- A Sortie is one acquisition route, not a requirement for unveiling. Digital Extremes’ Update 35 notes say Sorties require completing The War Within and reaching Mastery Rank 5. Those prerequisites apply to the Sortie route; they are not requirements for completing a challenge on a Riven you already have.
- Exact controls may vary. The official guide places Mods management in the Orbiter and weapon equipping in the Arsenal, but platform-specific button inputs are not established here. Follow the prompts shown by your platform’s interface.
