Use the Empowered Godsbane Blade. The Spellseal Doors in the Lost Rites quest are not opened with a key picked up nearby. If interacting with a door shows an item-selection menu but every item is unavailable, the door is waiting for a main-story unlock. Continue the story until the Empowered Godsbane Blade is available, then return and use that blade on the door.
This quest and door sequence belong to Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen. The original title, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, is a different game and does not use this Lost Rites progression.
The item that opens a Lost Rites Spellseal Door
The required item is the Empowered Godsbane Blade. There is no separate cave key, consumable, weapon repair item, or alternate door-opening tool described for these seals. The door can be reached before the blade is usable, which is why the interaction may appear to work while offering no selectable item.

First, make sure you are playing the right game
Current walkthroughs identify this version of Lost Rites as content in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen. The wording of the older game’s title is close enough to cause confusion, especially in search results, but the quest instructions here are for the sequel’s Dark Arisen content. Check the title shown on your platform before following a guide: a save from the original Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen will not contain this quest chain.
Start Lost Rites and reach the first trial
Talk to Captain Brant
Go to the Stardrop Inn and speak with Captain Brant. Select the dialogue option “About the uncovered ruins…” to begin Lost Rites. If that option is not present, the quest has not been started through the required conversation, so advancing through unrelated exploration will not activate the Spellseal objective.
Use the Proving Ground Compass
After the first trial awards the Proving Ground Compass, use it to reveal the challenge areas on your map. The compass is a navigation aid for finding the trial locations; it is not the item that opens a Spellseal Door. Treat the first accessible trial and the sealed entrances as two different stages of the quest.

Why the door rejects every item
A Spellseal Door can be encountered before the main-story event that supplies its required weapon. Interacting with it may open an item menu, but the inventory list can contain no valid selection. This behavior has three practical implications:
- The door itself is functioning and recognizing the interaction.
- The absence of a selectable item is expected while the story gate is still closed.
- Another object hidden in the same cave is not required to make the menu work.
Do not discard weapons, reload repeatedly, or spend time testing unrelated quest objects. Once the relevant story progression is complete, the correct item becomes available for the interaction.
Advance the main story until the blade is empowered
Continue the main storyline normally and watch for the point at which the Empowered Godsbane Blade becomes available. The secondary guides currently describing this sequence do not use identical milestone wording. One associates the blade with completing “A New Godsway”; another describes the empowerment after reaching “Convergence” and giving Ambrosius 15 Wyrmslife Crystals. Because those descriptions differ in how they label the reward sequence, use the practical condition rather than treating either label as a universal checkpoint: the blade must actually be present and empowered in your progression.

If you have reached one of those story chapters but the weapon is not yet available, continue the objectives shown by your main quest. The door cannot be forced open by carrying an ordinary Godsbane Blade, and the Lost Rites map marker does not replace the story requirement.

Open the Spellseal Door: exact procedure
- Confirm the quest. Make sure Lost Rites was started with Captain Brant at the Stardrop Inn using “About the uncovered ruins…”.
- Reach the door. Use the Proving Ground Compass and your map to return to the challenge area containing the Spellseal Door.
- Check your progression. Verify that the Empowered Godsbane Blade is available in your current inventory or equipment state. If it is not, the door will continue to reject the item menu.
- Interact with the seal. Stand at the Spellseal Door and activate the normal interact prompt.
- Select the blade. When the item menu appears, choose the Empowered Godsbane Blade. Do not substitute an unempowered version or another weapon.
- Proceed through the opening. Once the seal accepts the blade, continue the challenge or loot route beyond that entrance.

Troubleshooting when nothing is selectable
You are looking for a key in the cave
Stop searching for a local key. The guides describing this door treat the empty item menu as a story lock. Explore the area only for objectives that the current trial actually makes available; the sealed entrance will remain unchanged until the main-story condition is met.
You started Lost Rites but skipped the first trial
Return to the quest route and use the Proving Ground Compass once it has been awarded. The compass reveals challenge areas, while the Empowered Godsbane Blade handles the later seal. Confusing those roles can make it seem as though the quest marker is malfunctioning.

You reached a named story milestone but cannot select the blade
Quest names can be presented differently by different walkthroughs, and the published descriptions do not agree on one universal moment for the reward. Check the actual weapon state in your game rather than relying on a chapter name alone. Continue the active main-story objectives until the blade is explicitly available and empowered.
You returned with the right item but the interaction is unchanged
Make sure you are at the Spellseal Door associated with Lost Rites, not another sealed object with a different requirement. Confirm that the current save includes the empowerment event, then leave and re-enter the area and interact again. If the door still presents an empty menu, load a save from after the blade became available and repeat the visit.

- Required: the Lost Rites quest, the relevant main-story progression, and the Empowered Godsbane Blade.
- Useful for navigation: the Proving Ground Compass, obtained from the first trial.
- Not required: a hidden cave key, a special controller, a separate repair tool, or a second door-specific weapon.
The only qualification is timing: the door can be encountered before the story has supplied the empowered blade. Reaching the entrance early is normal; being unable to select an item at that point does not indicate that your game is missing content.

Why guide descriptions mention different milestones
VGC’s October 8, 2026 walkthrough links the weapon to A New Godsway. An AllThingsHow guide updated October 10, 2026 describes the empowerment after Convergence and a request involving 15 Wyrmslife Crystals. An iTechGuides walkthrough published October 9, 2026 likewise identifies the empowered blade as the required item and documents the early empty-menu behavior. These are secondary guides rather than first-party Capcom documentation, and their labels for the sequence differ.
For that reason, the reliable in-game test is not a particular guide’s chapter name. It is whether your character has received the Empowered Godsbane Blade. Once that condition is true, return to the door and select it from the interaction menu.

Start the quest through Captain Brant’s “About the uncovered ruins…” dialogue at the Stardrop Inn, and use the Proving Ground Compass only to find the challenge areas.
