The most dependable way to open a .jxl file on Windows, macOS, or Linux is XnView MP. Its vendor documentation says the application reads and displays JPEG XL natively on all three desktop operating systems, without a plug-in or external codec. Install the build for your system, choose File > Open, and select the JXL file. If another application cannot read it, use XnView MP’s Save As or export command to create a JPEG or PNG copy.
Linux users can also install the libjxl package and use a libjxl-enabled viewer such as ImageMagick, gThumb, or Gwenview. On macOS, Safari 17 added JPEG XL support, although browser support outside Safari is version-dependent. The detailed procedures below explain how to open, associate, preview, and convert JXL files without losing the original.
The quickest cross-platform method: XnView MP
XnView MP is the clearest graphical answer when you need one workflow that works across Windows, macOS, and Linux. XnView’s documentation explicitly states that XnView MP reads and displays JPEG-XL (.jxl) files natively, with no plug-in or external codec required. It also documents saving a JXL image as JPEG or PNG.

Install and open a JXL file
- Download the XnView MP build for your operating system from the vendor’s official download page.
- Install it using the normal installer or package for that system. On Linux, the vendor lists DEB, RPM, and AppImage packages.
- Start XnView MP and choose File > Open.
- Select the file ending in
.jxl. The image should appear in the viewer without adding a separate JPEG XL plug-in.
You can also open the file from your file manager. If the operating system asks which application to use, select XnView MP. Enable the option to use that application for JXL files when it is offered.

Convert from the same window
When a program, web service, or document editor does not accept JXL, open the image in XnView MP and choose Save As (or the equivalent export command). Select JPEG for broad photographic compatibility or PNG when that format is required by the destination. Give the converted file a new name so the original JXL remains available.
Conversion is not a transparent container change. Re-encoding can change compression, metadata, color information, or animation behavior. Keep the JXL as the archival or source file whenever those details matter.
Opening JXL files on Windows
Use XnView MP for immediate viewing
- Install the Windows version of XnView MP.
- Right-click the
.jxlfile in File Explorer and choose Open with. - Select XnView MP. If it is not listed, choose Choose another app and browse to the installed program.
- To make the choice permanent, enable the option to always use the selected app for
.jxlfiles before confirming.
You can instead open XnView MP first and use File > Open. This bypasses a broken or missing file association and is the fastest test when double-clicking appears to do nothing.
What Windows itself may or may not display
The JPEG XL support list records a Windows Imaging Component and a Windows thumbnail handler. That means Explorer thumbnails or behavior in another Windows imaging application can depend on which component is installed and on the Windows version. It is not established that every Windows edition includes JXL support by default, so do not assume that Photos or File Explorer will open every JXL file on a fresh installation.
If Explorer shows a generic icon, that does not prove the file is damaged. Open it with XnView MP first. If the image displays there, the issue is the Windows association or thumbnail integration rather than the image data.

Repair a failed association
- Confirm the extension is exactly
.jxl, not a second extension such as.jxl.jpghidden by Explorer. - Use Open with and select XnView MP manually instead of relying on the default application.
- After confirming that the file opens, set XnView MP as the default app for the JXL extension in Windows’ file-association settings.
- If only thumbnails fail while full-size opening works, continue using the viewer; thumbnail support is a separate Windows component and may vary by release.
Opening JXL files on macOS
Open with XnView MP
- Install the macOS build of XnView MP.
- In Finder, Control-click the JXL file and choose Open With > XnView MP, or launch XnView MP and select File > Open.
- To make XnView MP the regular viewer, use Finder’s Get Info panel, choose XnView MP under Open with, and apply that choice to files of the same type.
This is the predictable desktop workflow because it does not depend on which macOS release has a Quick Look plug-in installed.
Safari 17 and browser viewing
Apple’s Safari 17 release notes state, “Added support for JPEG XL.” Apple’s WebKit feature article for Safari 17 also lists JPEG XL among the newly supported image types. If your Mac runs Safari 17 or a later release that retains this support, you can test a file by dragging it into a Safari window or opening it from a local-file command.
Safari support is not the same as system-wide support. A browser may display the image while Finder, Preview, or another application still cannot. Browser support outside Safari is version-dependent, so test the exact browser and version instead of assuming that every Chromium- or Firefox-based browser accepts JXL.
Quick Look and thumbnails
The libjxl support list records a macOS viewer and Quick Look plug-in. Availability can depend on the macOS release and the plug-in package, so check the plug-in’s compatibility before relying on spacebar previews in Finder. If Quick Look shows no preview, use XnView MP; the absence of a preview does not by itself indicate a corrupt file.
Opening JXL files on Linux
Install XnView MP packages
XnView lists DEB, RPM, and AppImage packages for Linux. Choose the package format that matches your distribution, install it through the distribution’s normal software workflow, and open the file with File > Open. An AppImage can be useful when the repository version is old or when you want to keep the viewer separate from system packages.

Use your distribution’s libjxl package
The libjxl project says that most Linux distributions package libjxl. Open your distribution’s package manager, search for libjxl, and install the runtime and, when offered separately, the tools or development components you actually need. Package names and repository versions vary, so follow the naming and installation conventions of your distribution rather than copying a package name from another Linux family.
Once libjxl support is installed, use a viewer that is built with it. The support list names ImageMagick, gThumb, Gwenview, and other Qt or GTK applications as possible viewers. A viewer can be installed but still lack JXL support if it was built without the relevant library; check its format list or open a test file to verify.
Associate JXL files with a Linux viewer
- Open the file manager’s context menu for the
.jxlfile. - Choose Open With and select the installed libjxl-enabled application.
- If the application is absent from the list, launch it directly and use its open dialog.
- After confirming that it works, set it as the default application for the JXL MIME type or extension in your desktop environment.
Qt and GTK desktops can expose different association dialogs, and a distribution update can change the registered MIME information. Opening the file from inside the viewer is therefore a useful fallback when a double-click does nothing.
Command-line decoding and encoding with libjxl
For scripts, batch jobs, servers, or headless machines, libjxl supplies the official djxl decoder and cjxl encoder tools. They are separate from a graphical file association: installing the command-line tools does not automatically make a desktop viewer or file manager display thumbnails.

djxl input.jxl output.pngUse the help output from the version installed on your system to confirm supported output formats and options. The exact package build can determine which codecs and features are available.
Encode or batch-process images
cjxl performs the reverse operation: it encodes a supported source image into JXL. For repeatable jobs, keep the source files and record the encoder options used. A conversion pipeline should write to a new destination rather than overwrite the only copy of the source or the original JXL.
Command-line conversion is useful when hundreds of files must be processed, but it does not remove format-compatibility concerns. Check a representative output in the application that will receive it, especially when metadata, animation, or high-dynamic-range content is important.
Converting JXL to JPEG or PNG for an incompatible app
Graphical conversion in XnView MP
- Open the JXL in XnView MP.
- Choose File > Save As or the export command.
- Choose JPEG or PNG in the format selector.
- Select a new filename and destination, then save.
- Open the result in the target application and check dimensions, colors, metadata, and any frames before deleting anything.
JPEG is commonly accepted by older photo and office software. PNG is often chosen when the receiving workflow explicitly requires PNG. The correct choice is determined by the next application, not by the JXL extension itself.

- A JPEG or PNG copy is a new encoded file, so compression characteristics can change.
- Metadata may not transfer identically between formats.
- Animated content may not survive a conversion that produces a single still image.
- Color or high-dynamic-range behavior can differ between the source and destination format and between applications.
- Keep the original JXL until the converted file has been tested in its final workflow.

Choose XnView MP when you want one GUI across all three desktop systems. Choose libjxl tools when the task is automated or runs without a desktop. Choose a browser only when the specific browser version is known to support JXL. If another application is the final destination and cannot open JXL, convert a copy to the format it accepts.

Troubleshooting a JXL file that will not open
The file has no associated application
This is an association problem, not necessarily a format problem. Use the operating system’s Open with command and select XnView MP, or open the file from XnView MP’s own dialog. Set the association only after the viewer successfully displays the image.
The viewer reports an unsupported format
Confirm that you installed a current build with native JXL support or a viewer linked against libjxl. On Linux, check that the distribution package is present and that the viewer actually advertises JXL support. Installing an unrelated image viewer does not guarantee that it includes the library.
Only thumbnails or previews are missing
Thumbnail handlers and Quick Look plug-ins are separate from full-image decoding. Windows thumbnail behavior can depend on Windows Imaging Component and the installed version; macOS Quick Look availability can depend on the release and plug-in. Use a full viewer to verify the image before troubleshooting previews.

Compare the original and converted files in the same application when possible. Re-encoding can alter compression, metadata, animation behavior, or color handling. Repeat the conversion with the destination format and settings required by the receiving application, and retain the source JXL.
A browser opens one JXL but not another
Browser support is version- and engine-dependent, and a browser’s support does not establish support in the operating system or another browser. Use XnView MP or a libjxl-enabled desktop viewer for a consistent local-file workflow, then test any browser-based delivery separately.
