A .CDG file used for karaoke contains lyrics and graphics—not the song audio and not a general-purpose compressed archive. To hear the song, open it in karaoke software that supports CDG or MP3+G and keep its matching audio file, usually an MP3, alongside it. If what you have is a ZIP, BIN, or physical CD+G disc, use the route for that format instead.

First identify what you have

Check the file extension and, for a loose CDG file, look for a matching audio file with the same filename stem. These related formats store karaoke content differently:

What you have What it contains or needs How to proceed
.cdg and matching .mp3 Separate graphics/lyrics and audio files Open the CDG in a karaoke player with CDG or MP3+G support; keep both files together.
.zip karaoke package May package a CDG and its matching audio file Use a player that supports karaoke ZIP files, or inspect/extract the archive and confirm the pair is present.
.bin Can contain the audio and CD+G lyrics together Use a player that explicitly lists BIN support.
Physical CD+G disc Audio plus graphics encoded in disc subchannel data Use compatible playback software and an optical drive that can expose CD+G subchannel data.

The distinctions matter: a ZIP is an archive that may contain separate files, a BIN may combine karaoke data, and a physical disc is not the same as a loose CDG file. A general archive utility can inspect a ZIP, but it does not play karaoke graphics.

How do I open a CDG file?

Use karaoke software that explicitly supports CDG or MP3+G. In the documented Siglos Karaoke Player/Recorder 2 workflow, choose Load File, select the CDG file, and start playback; the player uses the matching MP3. Its documentation also describes a full-screen lyrics view. See the Siglos quick-start guide and Siglos playback instructions.

  4. Switch to full-screen lyrics if you want the text larger on a display.

Software support varies by application and version, so confirm the current platform and supported formats in the application’s own documentation. A general-purpose media player may play audio but fail to display CDG lyrics; FileInfo notes that support through VLC or Winamp plug-ins can be inconsistent (FileInfo’s CDG file reference).

Why is there no sound when I open a CDG file?

The CDG is normally the graphics component, so silence is expected if its companion audio is missing or not being loaded. Check the folder for an MP3 with the same base filename—for example, song.cdg alongside song.mp3—and keep the pair together. Then load the CDG through a player that supports MP3+G rather than expecting the CDG to provide audio by itself.

How do I play a zipped MP3+G karaoke file?

Some karaoke players list ZIP support and can open a karaoke archive directly. The Siglos format documentation lists ZIP among its supported karaoke formats (format list). If your player does not recognize the ZIP, inspect or extract it with archive software, then check that the matching CDG and audio files are both present. Load the CDG in a compatible karaoke player.

What program opens CDG files, ZIPs, and BINs?

Choose by the format you actually have, not just by the word “karaoke.” The Siglos documentation lists CDG, ZIP, BIN, and CD+G disc playback; its documented file workflow is to select the CDG file for a paired track. CAVS also documents karaoke playback and optional external-disc-drive use in its PlayCDG Online manual. These examples establish format support in the cited documentation, not universal support across operating systems or every current software version.

Can I play a CD+G disc on my computer?

Possibly, but a regular optical drive’s ability to read ordinary CDs does not establish that it can provide CD+G graphics to software. The graphics are stored in subchannel data, so both the playback software and the drive must support access to that data. Jim Bumgardner’s technical reference explains the format and this drive requirement in CD+G Revealed: Playing back Karaoke tracks in Software.

  1. Use karaoke software that documents CD+G disc playback. In the Siglos instructions, choose Load CD and select the optical drive in settings if more than one is installed (playback instructions).
  2. Confirm that the particular drive exposes CD+G subchannel data; a generic “external CD drive” description is not enough to establish this capability.
  3. If lyrics are missing while disc audio plays, check CD+G support in both the drive and the software.

What is happening inside a CD+G track?

CD+G uses disc subchannels for graphics alongside the audio. In Jim Bumgardner’s 1995 technical description, normal-speed playback is 75 sectors per second, with 96 bytes of subchannel data per sector arranged as four 24-byte packets. He derives a graphics-stream capacity of 28,800 bits per second (3.6 KB/s) from those format values. These figures describe the format in that technical reference, not a current software-performance measurement. The same reference explains why a drive must expose the subchannel data for computer playback.

What to check when playback fails

  • Lyrics show, but there is no sound: look for the matching MP3 and check that the CDG and MP3 have matching base filenames and are together.
  • Sound plays, but disc lyrics do not: confirm CD+G subchannel support in both the optical drive and playback software.
  • A ZIP will not load: inspect or extract it, check for the CDG/audio pair, and load the CDG in a player that supports it.
  • A general media player shows no lyrics: try karaoke-specific software with documented CDG support; general-player or plug-in support may be inconsistent.
